Broadband usage and wireless use

Hi I want to ask about my broadband connection.  I am going over my limit for broadband usage and wondered how I can check nobody else is using my connection wirelessly.  I went into network connection center on my computer and it shows my computer conneted to bt hub and it shows a connection with the name of user.  Can somebody help with this.  Thanks in advance.

Hi unless someone knows your hubs wireless encryption code then no one can connect to your hub and use your allowance

  • Broadband Usage and speed problems.

    Hi.
I have question about broadband usage.
Its 11 days and bt website says I used more then 20GB!
Its nearly 1.8 GB per day! I used Internet for browsing website and receive one email pre day, I download twice large amount (about 1-1,5GB) and nothing more!
I just wonder what going on? I try monitor my usage day by day from 5 days ago and its worst and worst!!!
I nothing download but my usage going very fast.
Its looks like I will be download about 3 movies per day that means I will have now more then 30 movies! Its must be something wrong!
I used before VM and my average Internet usage was about 15-20GB per Month with solid 10MB speed.
Now my speed is **bleep** from 8mb to 1mb and sometimes less then 512kb!!! And usage is higher !!!
How can I see details about my usage?
    And q2
About speed - in my area BT Infinity will be available from 31.12.2010
Its mean still BT have same works, it might be cause my slow broadband?
And from 25.11 till now is same problem with broadband, in three days I must reset BT Hub because there is no Internet. On BT Hub anything looks fine, Is IP address etc... But is no Internet telephone and no Internet as well.
I check by used ping bbc.co.uk

    Hi.
I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions, this may help to determine why your usage is as high as you're seeing.
Do you have more than one computer connected ? Do you use iPlayer, or watch lots of youtube stuff ? Do you have any games machines such as XBox connected to the Internet ?
Are you uploading lots of things ? uploads count as well as downloads.
Are you up to date with all security and anti-virus packages, and have you run any scans recently ? (sometimes viruses and trojans can cause a usage problem).
Your inherent speed problem could be due to various reasons, for example worsening line conditions due to weather and general wear and tear. Strangely viruses can cause a noticeable slow down, but mainly due to the computer being infected rather than the line being slow.
Can you posssibly post the hub stats ?
If you're using a PC, download something like Networx usage monitor and see if that can help. Of course it needs to be on each PC, but can't see the usage of games machines or Internet TV (or iPhone use etc).
I used only 2 machines. Desktop PC and laptop. Laptop very light, just 1-2 hours per day only websurfing (3-5 websites with no movie or high quality images, 90% is just plain text)
I not download lots of stuff, Like I just say, in VM my average monthly usage was 15-20 GB and I download few movie and lots of music.
In December I just download one movie other traffic is just webserfing email.
Youtube - yes I watch, but its not new staff for me, like just say my usage is not deferent then was in VM!
Now usage monitor on BT web site say I used more then 20GB! in 11 days!!! if one movie will be 0.7GB its means I download about 30 movies!
Its massive! I never download 30 movies in 2-3 months )
This start about 5 days ago, when my strip goes to orange. My average Internet usage is 1.8GB !!! Even I for 2 days used Internet very little.
    I nothing upload.
It is not possible, to anny worm or viruses used so big bandusuage if any software used Internet connection in background (like systems) its just kilobits not gigabits!
If I will be use very hardly Internet I will be no rise alarm. But I now what I used. I have Internet for more then 7 years and now how far I go.
And now is very strange - I less used inherent I have more GB used!
In my calculation if my average usage per day will be 1.8GB I will used 55GB!!! I never used more 20 - max 30GB! It must be something wrong on BT site.
I get BT Broadband option 2 be cause, I now I used about 15-20GB per months and BT Broadband option 1 is not for me, but 20GB in 11 days!
We not talk abut 100MB! or 500MB per day we talk about nearly 2GB per day! Its massive!
Is any chance to get detail Internet usage?
    Q2
I loose Internet connection 3 times per week, so I need push reset button on hub.
I left once Hub with no reset but in 5 hours it will still no Internet.
Its looking very strange, because anything looks OK except I loos Internet phone (no blue telephone light)
In hub stats is IP, is Downstream etc... but when I ping bbc.co.uk it say: host unavailable or similar.
After reset working well. My be my Hub is faulty?
    Many Thanks for reply!

  • Broadband usage and BTFON

My broadband usage was a fairly steady 7.5GB a month - at least, that's what the usage monitor says.
In July this year I apparently went over my 10GB limit.  Not having monitored my usage, I didn't think much about it.
Then in August it went over again, despite no-one having been home to use it for 10 days of that month.
So from September 1st, I started checking it daily.  By September 12th, I had used 2.58GB.  On September 13th that went up to 5.52GB despite no-one being home for most of that day, and in the short time I was home, I certainly didn't download or upload any video or other large files.  The last couple of days my usage has been low again, despite streaming a 30 minute video.
We signed up to BTFON, so I'm wondering if someone could have hooked onto our system and used it that way?  Are we paying for someone else's use with BTFON?  I think I've only used BTFON or BTOpenzone a couple of times at airports when I've been travelling, and not really thought about how it is paid for.
    Some clarification would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Geez, that took some negotiation and navigation, I was going round in circles, not seeing anything helpful for a while.  But I did find it eventually.

    Hi. Welcome to the forums.
Make a note of the hub stats at the same time each day so that a difference can be worked out (typically before retiring for the night). Keep a separate figure for up/down numbers. Make a note of the date.
The online stats can then be compared (as a difference) - but make a note of the date/time of the reading as this is typically updated in the afternoon for usage up to 23:59 the previous day.
So to compare correctly, use the relevant dates.
The hub stats could actually reset, either due to a reboot, power outage etc - hence the difference figures are the ones to use.
The hub stats in theory should always be higher than the online figures, because the hub stats include BTFon, BTVision, BTCloud and BBTalk. These items are excluded from the onlne stats (hence the delay to present those figures). Of course, if no-one has used any of the services, then the figures should be very close.
You only need to have 3 or 4 days of comparisons to see if something is awry.
Please can you post back at the end of the week with any findings ?

  • Broadband Usage and Alert Emails

I am losing the will to live, just noticed that my Direct Debit for BT has come out of my bank account and is twice the normal amount. Logged in to view bill on line and although have a 40gb monthly broadband usage have been charged for going over by 41gb! average monthly usage is 18gb! Haven't done anything different, don't understand why this is so high. Apparently email alerts have been sent to my bt email address hat I have never used and an old work email address for a job that I left over a year ago. Can't find anywhere that shows how and when my 71gb of usage has been derived at or anywhere to change my email alert address. What is even more interesting is that my bt account alert email address is current but no emails have ever been sent regarding broadband! Not happy.

  • Broadband/internet and wireless connection problem...

Towards the end of 2101 I received an email informing me that BT would be upgrading my local line and I could expect a much improved service. Whether this 'upgrade' has been the cause of my problems or is merely coincidental I cannot say. Prior to my experience since this time I could count lost broadband in hours per year (I never had internet or wireless connection problems).
Since the end of 2010 I now regularly lose my broadband completely every six to eight weeks. 'Home Hub cannot connect to broadband.' There is a worsening loss of speed? over a period of two to four days at the end of which I need to phone BT three/four/five, etc. times until they manage to locate the problem and fix it. It is always some problem they find on the line or with their equipment.
I always mention that this is an ongoing problem. Never do they take any action to escalate the issue.
This week things have become considerably worse.
I have started to lose my internet connection now. 'Safari cannot connect to the internet'.
There are now two issues which arise concurrently.
I phoned BT, finally the operative in India (through a very poor BT wireless phone connection) changed the channel of my router for me. He mentioned something about changing the address and password. This seriously exacerbated the situation. My password is not recognised now when I am asked to reconnect by selecting a network.
The next occasion on which I lost my INTERNET connection and tried to reconnect I got the message 'Airport has the self-assigned IP address (...........) and is unable to connect to the internet.
I phoned BT to report this and was told that this indicated an adapter problem and the problem was now out of BT's hands. I Should contact Apple.
I did so. Apple said I should contact BT to change channels. I explained this had caused the problem and they were now refusing to assist me. Apple tried everything that they could think of to resolve the issue (despite not being required to do so). Eventually the only suggestion they could make as BT had refused to help was to reinstall my operating system. Extremely drastic. But I can now connect wirelessly again.
Service is still intermittent requiring constant restarts to regain connections.
BT's response to a formal complaint was more of the usual banal questions, the usual tests, the usual promises of 'something would be done'.
Their systems are not set up to make any sort of accurate diagnosis of customers' issues. They seem to have a set number of 'fixes' into which they try to fit all problems - one would assume simply to save costs - their cost saving exercises are now costing me money.
    That's all for starters.
    Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem, since BT "upgraded my broardband" my home hub looses internet connection at least twice a day and I have to power reset it. the broadband shows as connected but the internet connection is lost, if I try reconnecting it fails and only a power resetr will work. I have a temp solution by fitting a time switch to the mains adaptor and reseting it at 0200 each day. but before the upgrade the home hub had worked for years and no problems. i have also replaced the origonal home hub 1 with a home hub 2 to see if that improves the situation.

This subject has been marked as solved by the originator and you will get more response if you start your own subject rather than continue here.
if you start your own subject just cut and paste your post and then in order to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results .
are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Do you have any phone extension sockets in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • Broadband usage and upgrading?

Hi there. So this month, our house has gone a bit crazy. We've had lots of children and teens over. Lots of demand has been used, youtube and everything. And we are already over our usage limit of 40GB, by about 10GB so thats already £10 we have to pay extra. And its only been like two weeks of the month. We have always been considering upgrading it to the unlimited option. But it seems this month we'll have to. What i am wondering, is what would the cost of this be. Will it be the price of the new pacage we would get, and that £10 pounds we went over. Or will it be 2 weeks worth of the 40GB package, the rest of the month worth of unlimited package. The whole cost will be what determines if we'll be upgrading, or turning of the internet and relying on the phones for our internet needs!!! Thanks!!

Phone sales on 150. If you are out of contract and hint that you might be looking elsewhere, you could get a surprisingly good deal. If you are still in contract, see what they say; if it sounds too high try to negotiate better but be prepared to have to extend your contract period.

  • Broadband Usage Problem - Need Proper Help From BT

    Hello,
A day ago I received a message from BT saying that I was approaching the usage limit for my BT broadband.  I am on Option 2 and normally use around 20GB in a month.  I checked my usage on My BT and found it was 38.64GB on 14/2.  I checked again this morning and found it was now 42.73GB for the 15/2.
I've tried calling BT, but have only got through to the BT help in India.  The first person I spoke to said it was because I was being charged for my BTVision usage and wouldn't accept that it was independent of my broadband.  I tried again, and the second person said the same, but upon my insistence checked with a colleague - and came back apologising, saying that the BTVision usage was separate and so I would not be charged at the end of the month.
I am scared to use my BT broadband and BTVision for fearing of incurring more charges.  I have not done anything that warrants high usage: I don't watch films or play games on-line.  I read news, check e-mails, do banking, view video clips - the usual everyday stuff.
Please can somebody from BT help me?  I am tired of trying to explain the situation and getting the same scripted answers.  The stock response from the BT staff seems to be for me to upgrade to an unlimited package, but I want to know why this is happening (is it a mistake on BT's part?  I did not use 4GB yesterday), how I can go back to my normal broadband usage, and whether I will be charged for this excessive usage.  In short: something is wrong, I have little control over the situation despite trying repeatedly to talk to someone from BT, and I would like some help.
    Thank you
    Paul

I've received a very helpful message from a Forum Moderator explaining my problem.  The usage monitor also included my BT Vision usage, so I have not exceeded the limit with my broadband.  Hopefully this problem will be sorted out in the next few weeks.
It seems a great shame BT's staff in India aren't aware of this problem - it would save a lot of time, telephone calls and worry.
This is extremely interesting. I've been having this problem since last summer and still am. I have a similar type of usage to you with browsing, emails etc. My work IT department are gobsmacked how my usage can be so high.
I've been through exactly the same where I've stopped using my BB service for fear of being charged and i have always suspected BT Vision usage was being included. During a 1 hour phone call with India and several times since I have been told it is "IMPOSSIBLE" for BT Vision usage to be included. This admission appears to prove otherwise !!

  • Wired and Wireless Connections to OfficeJet 8620?

We have a small wired Ethernet network.  We are planning to install an HP OfficeJet 8620 multi-function printer tomorrow.  I understand that for a wired-only Ethernet network, I would just connect the OfficeJet to our router, then install the drivers on each workstation.
Unfortunately, our situation is more complicated than that.  Several people want to use wireless devices to print to the OfficeJet 8620.  We have a working wireless network in place, and the wireless devices are able to access it without problem..
All devices on the network (wired and wireless) use the same router, which has both wired Ethernet ports and wireless capability.  So, everything is on the same network, going through the same router.
From reading the 8620 documentation, it looks like you can only have a wired OR a wireless connection, but not both.  Apparently connecting a CAT-5 cable to the Ethernet port on the printer disables the wireless capability of the printer.
If that is correct, what can we do to enable both wired computers and wireless mobile devices to print to the 8620, given the network structure I have described above?
Thanks very much for any assistance you can offer.

  • BT infinity Broadband usage

Have been with BT broadband now for 2 days. Have my own MyBT account set up. It shows my BT account number and under 2 tabs titled My Bills and My services. I tried to look fro broadband usage and could not find the information. when i click on the View your usage box in My bills and payments the response is 'unsuccessful as you dont have any products or services linked to this account. If i try My services tab and click on the broadband icon there is no list that comes up next to it for broadband usage as indicated by other users on this forum.
So i called the telephone helpdesk. First time they told me to change my browser. So went from Moxilla to IE and disabled pop up blockers. No success.
So called up technical services again and they could tell me my usage over the phone. When i asked for setting up the facility on my MyBT page he hummed and ahhed and told me to download the thinkbroadband software. I did that and now i get on my desktop the broadband usage box.
But i dont want it permanently on my desktop. I want it on my MyBT page as everyone else. What am i doing wrong?? Please help

    Hi there
As someone who has unlimited I dont track my usage and so I will try to help.
If the software that you have can be opend to veiw usage then you don't have to have it on the desktop and you can open it when you want to check.
If the BT usage information is not up yet that might be because you are within the ten day settling in period where DLM and BRAZ takes place so they may not be tracking your usage yet.
As said unsure if that is totally true but if you can't see your usage on bts page within 10 days I would call BT again to check what is going on, try talking to the accounts people.
    Hope this helps

  • Broadband usage high and jumping in usage

    Hi
I've been with BT for 6 years at my current address and I had this exact problem back in 2014. It is now happening again. - It turned out my on Demand service was being counted to my broadband usage!!
I took up Netflix (as the On Demand servcies being withdrawn) on the 5th of May, I received the You View box on the 8th May and set it up over that weekend. Sine then my usage has jumped, but I  had not realised this until I received an email to say I'd used 6GB of my 10GB allowance.
I checked the usage monitor on 22nd May and my usage was 6.77GB. I telephoned on the 24th May as my usage was showing 7.11GB. I have changed my wireless password and have done everything BT has asked. This morning 6.30am I checked my usage and it showed 9.5GB used! As I've had to come to work I have not been able to telephone you. I've just logged into my account (10.50am) and my uasage is now 10.36GB!!
My average usage is about 3.25GB p/mnth. Nothing has changed except for the new You view box and this weekends usage is impossible! We were away from the house during the day coming home in the evening, only watching some Netflix. It is just myself and my partner. My PC has been turned off since Thursday and my Chrome book was turned on, on Sunday Morning to change my wireless password, then off again. Our mobiles connect to the BT wifi hot spot and not our hub.
I am hoping your going to tell me that something similar is happening and you (BT) are going to fix this and reverse all charges as  I have received an email to say I am now going to be charged for this excessive use. Please help as this is very worrying!

I have started with the BT you view box a few months ago and have taken on Netflix with BT when I took on the contract. Since then my broadband usage has rocketed and is going way over my 20gb usage allowance. However I am not using my laptop or other devices much and in fact less than I have done for some time. The only reason for this must be that the netfix usage is being added to my general broadband usage. In some cases this was adding on 2 and 3 gb per day when no other devices were being used at all . BT had promised to call me and had even sent me a text telling me when the call was coming ....but it didnt happen.  I have now done an experiment for the first week in June were I have not used the you view for netflixs or on demand at all but continued to use my laptop for emailing etc as per normal. this has shown my usage as only 0.23gb. Clearly there is something wrong and the you view box usage is 'leaking' and being counted in my general broadband usage. I am very unhappy about this as I was sold the benefits of using the you view box on demand services and netflix on the basis that its usage did not count towards my bills. I have never had netflix before so there isnt any confusion about it previously being used by me. Niether have I used it on any other device ....its all been through my BT box .....and I dont want to be charged for it. If any of the ondemand and netflix is being put onto my broadband I was obviously miss sold the device in the first place. Whenever I call the customer service helpline I get different answers and am told that someone will call me back ...they never do ...check your CS phone tapes of my calls and you will see.
looking at the community forum I can see that I am far from unique with this problem .
Can someone call or communicate with me to solve this asap it is of great concern to me.

  • Broadband usage limit and identifying non-authoris...

    Hello
I have read various threads on the topic of usage limits and I am confused.  We have been with BT for 2 months and each month have received a "usage nearing limit" email (we are on option 1 with 10Gb limit)  When we signed up with BT we described our typical usage and the salesman assured us that 10Mb was plenty for our usage - we don't do gaming, watch movies, just general internet surfing - sending the odd excel or word file to and from work, occasional you-tube and iplayer use - maybe 2 hours a week max.  These warning emails have made me wonder
    a) which of 3 possible machines in our house is racking up the most usage - when, which sites?
    b) might someone else (we live on an estate) be using our wireless broadband connection without us knowing?
I am considering downloading a usage monitor but am a bit concerned about virus infection.
If anyone out there can explain what to do in a non-techy way I would appreciate it - I am not technically aware!
    Thanks
    Jac in Ciren

Without putting a meter on your machines you wont acutally know which is using more usage. However having been running on a mobile broadband dongle for a couple of weeks now I can easily say that 1-2 hours of Iplayer (depending on quality viewed) could be between 400MB and 2GB. On top of that I've noticed that youtube videos seem to rack up usage so if anything I would say it was the occasional youtube that is the cause of your usage warnings.
One way you might be able to check if anyone is leeching your connection is to go to your homehub page 192.168.1.254 then somewhere on there (as I say im not on HH connection myself atm) in settings devices (might be in advanced settings) there should be a list/diagram of all the things that have connected to your homehub should be 3 headings, Wired, Wireless, Phones (or similar) Under wired you should see a list of your 3 machines along with anything else you wire to your HH, in the wireless section (providing you dont use it) if there is a device name there, chances are someone has accessed your wireless.
Im not 100% but that might help

  • Broadband usage gone over warnings but used less t...

Earlier in the month I had an email from BT to let me know I'd used more than 7Gb of my 10Gb allowance. I used the broadband usage calculator which told me a similar story.
Trouble is I'm on the 40Gb option, have been for about a year, when I click through to my account details that is what it states there.
Having just done the usage calculator again, it's now showing red - limit exceeded - 28Gb used of a 10Gb allowance, but again clicking through to my account details, that still shows I'm on 40Gb monthly usage plan.
This has worked as expected in all previous months, anyone any ideas why one part of the BT accounting system has me flagged for a different usage amount than the other? And who do I need to speak to get all ends stating the correct amount?
    Thanks for any pointers folks...

    Hi Mr Whippy,
Thanks for the post and welcome to the forum.  I would like to double check this for you.
It sounds to me that your package is correct on your account but your usage profile may be wrong.  This is only an educated guess, without checking your details I cant be sure
Please drop me an email via the 'Contact Us' link in my profile. (click on my name and you will find the link under the "about me" section). Include your BT account details and the link to this thread.  I'll get to the bottom of this.
