Broadband Very Slow - Unable to Download / Upload ...

Hi,
I've been having problems with my broadband speed for over a week now. While I can load basic webpages, anything that involves uploading large files (e.g. pictures to Facebook) or downloading large files (e.g. a programme for iplayer) takes an incredibly long time.
I'm not particularly technical so would be grateful for any suggestions as to how I can resolve this issue. I've had BT broadband for the best part of 6 months and this is the first issue I've had.
Many thanks in advance.

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods
in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

    Hi,
Sorry to hear that your having problems with your BT Broadband
You will either be on the ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service or if your exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded you maybe on the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12/20mbps) service depending on your line quality and length.
However these upto speeds may not be the speeds you will get as ADSL broadband connections are very dependent on the distance from your property to the exchange and the quality of your line. The further away you are from your local exchange the slower your broadband speed will be.
To enable the community to help you please see the advice below:
Please see Keith's help guide here: Helping forum members to help you, it will go through some checks that are needed for us to help you.
A summary of the checks are:
1a) Is your router/Homehub connected by a BT NTE5 master socket, Adsl Filtered Master Socket or Extension Socket?   Please bear in mind that extension cables and extension sockets can reduce the broadband's performance. If you have an Old LJU master socket then please say.
1b) Have you tried the Test Socket? - if you have one.
    2) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtest.btwholesale.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, Ethernet, connection] After Quick Test is done you need to click "Further Diagnostics" to get IP Profile.
    3) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 ,called quite line test, from landline phone. should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
    4) please post adsl line statistics

  • Broadband VERY slow for weeks now

Hi. We've been suffering very slow (almost dial-up like) speeds on our broadband for abot 3 weeks now, and I'm reaching the end of my tether! Any help on offer would be much appreciated. Quick summary:
    - A week or so ago a first engineer came out, as we had slow broadband and our landline wasn't working. He discovered and fixed a physical line fault up the road. The landline returned, but the broadband remained slow. He said the speed probably locked at the exchange but would sort itself out in a few days.
    - After a few days, the speed hadn't changed and (after another call and wait) another engineer came out. He called the exchange and got them to make some changes which seemed to have changed the "DSL Connection Rate" returned on the BT speedtester, but the actual speed we're receiving hasn't improved. He claimed the speed would return to normal a couple of hours after he left. It didn't. This was 3 days ago.

  • Portege R100: 4GB SD card runs very slow - unable to format

Laptop working fine, no issues when using 1GB SD card. When 4GB SD card inserted PC runs very slow. Eventually I am able to run Toshiba SD Memory Card Format software (latest download version). It doesn't seem to recognise 4GB card. Unable to format. When tried later with 1GB card everything works well.
Has anyone been able to get a 4GB SD card working ?
I am not sure whether the laptop software needs a patch, or if 4GB card is not fully compatible with SD card standards, though it was bought from reputable supplier.
    Graham

    Hi
I think its nothing wrong with the software but the SD card is simply not 100% compatible.
In the last time the SD card sizes increase rapidly.
I think the card reader and the software were not designed to handle such big SD card like this one.
How about buying an external SD card reader?
Such devices are not very expensive and I think the newest generation should be able to handle also the 4GB SD cards.

  • Broadband very slow

    Hi
My broadband has been very slow for the last week, there was a fault on my line which was fixed yesterday but still my broadband is very slow. I have restarted the router, virus scanned my computer but still the problem persists. The strange thing is I am typing this on my iPhone and it seems to work quicker over my broadband, however I can't download anything with it. On my laptop and ipad the Internet is very slow. Would this issue be a problem with my router? It is a bt one but is 2 years old, the reason I say this is my neighbours broadband works perfectly and my line seems to be fixed so I can't see what else the problem could be.
    Thanks

  • Very slow network performance - with uploads faster than downloads

I just got new ISP - 100 mbps through a Cat5 line. It checks out when I run ethernet directly to a computer. However, I want a totally wireless network.
I have a Time Capsule attached by ethernet and that is my main network device. I also have two airport Xpress' to extend the network.
I am getting, on average, 16 mbps! And, upload speed is generally higher.
The Time Capsule is about 2 yrs old, but it is an "n" device.
Anybody have any idea what the problem might be? I was considering getting a new extreme and using the Time Capsule as an extender instead of the expresses because, as I understand it, the express has one band only. Would that be better? Mainly, I want to get the speed up to what it should be.
Is there some way to trouble shoot the Time Capsule?
Others in my building with D Link or Linksys routers are getting over 80 mbps wirelessly, so I know it is possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to stay with Apple products, but if not possible I will get another brand of router.
    Thanks,
    Deanna

    Deannanel wrote:
So, William, I got an Airport Extreme. Within 20 or so feet of it I am now getting 85 to 95 Mbps!
    Great!
However, in the far reaches of the house, signal is low and I have not been able to extent network with either the Time Capsule or an Airport Express. They just won't connect.
Based on the earlier numbers you gave me, you won't be able to establish a reliable connection "in the far reaches of the house", as it's too far away from the base router. You'll either have to (1) run Ethernet to that remote unit, (2) use PowerLine units as an Ethernet extender, or (3) put the remote unit closer to the base unit.
I reset the Time Capsule a couple of times. I noticed that both devices are automatically set to channel 157.
That's a 5 GHz channel. That band can give faster throughput, but the signal strength falls off faster than in the 2.4 GHz band.
The Extreme has 2 channels - 2 and 157. I do not have the option of changing the channel on either of the other devices.
That makes sense, if they're configured to extend an existing network. They must communicate on the same channel as the base station they're extending.

  • Broadband very slow since exchange upgrade

Ever since BT "upgraded" my local exchange a couple of weeks ago, my broadband speed has dropped dramatically.
I'm now only getting around 0.3 mbps, which is ridiculous.
    Will this improve at all?
Did the exchange upgrade cause this?
Is there anything I can do?

  • Very Slow Apple TV download

I am finding that anything I try to download takes a very long time on my apple TV ?
I have checked my internet download speed and it is around 13.6 which is good.

Hi and thanks for tyring to help. I mentioe DNS because it was mentioned as one of the things to check in a trouble shooting guide that needed to be identical - our T.V. and ISP DNS setting are identical. I should of mentioned that we are using wireless from a modem provided by our ISP Shaw Cable. I changed our interne channel on Shaw cable client portal from channel 1 to 11, also tried 6 - to no avail.  Our signal strength on settings and about is 4 bars out of 5 - so very good. Today it is actually stuck on 56 minutes to download the same movie as we tried yesterday. I think this problem is definitely on the Apple side of things. Any other ideas? Our modem is in the basement and we just do not have an ethernet cable long enough to try that way.
Out of luck out of ideas - Owning 5 other Apple devices this is the first time they really dissapoint me....
