Broadband/Wifi issues

I'm of the older generation and struggling. My router (BT Home Hub 8) was in the study close to my pc and plugged into an extension socket. The phonewire ran round the room for 5 metres to a filter with phone and router connections, and that in turn went under the floor for 6 metres to the master phone socket. I initially used an ethernet cable to connect router to PC as it wasn't wifi-enabled, but my new pc is so I have been using the router on wifi. It was mostly okay, but whenever I had problems I was told it was too far from the master socket. We are having a new floor fitted, the floorcovering will be permanently fixed, so I wanted to find an alternative position for both phone and router.
The new position I chose was in an adjacent room, in the middle of the house, plugged into the master phone socket 1 metre away. It was useless on wifi. Slow speed. I was told it was because we have a metal filing cabinet in direct line between router and pc. So I spent £35 on BT Extenders that work through the house wiring, using ethernet cables to connect power unit to router, and PC to a socket. It is all worse. The speed is fixed at 100 mbps, no way of checking the signal strength to the router, but the relevant light on the Extenders is frequently red for "poor signal". I've tried moving it higher, lower, further away, no change. The blue light on the router doesn't change.
What am I doing wrong, and how can I improve the situation?

Hi GG
Thanks for replying. No such thing as Infinity round here - we only get 12 channels on Freeview too and then only if we hang the aeriel out of the window! Mobile phones have similar issues.
First problem is I took advice from an "expert" and have now made alterations to the study room layout based on that advice.
Original set-up was 5 metre extension wire from master socket, under study floor to splitter/filter on study desk. Phone went into this, and router wire via another 6 metres to computer. Whenever we had problems the tut-tutters said the wiring was too long, and two extensions was two too many. And I did worry about having so much wiring under the floor. So to answer your first question, yes, I could do what you suggest but was told it wasn't good. Except the position where we had the router is now inaccessible but I could perhaps install a shelf for it.
New set up was to put the router closer to the master socket, but the transfer rate dropped from 72 mbps to I can't remember, but the result was poor, Hence we purchased the BT Extender 500 units to use the house wiring to transmit from router to computer. The result is worse, I can only assume that the router isn't getting a good signal in its new position. I've now tried about 20 combinations of postions for everything, and the best still seems to be the original set-up, long wires/double extensions, the lot, except, as said above, the original router position is inaccessible.
I will now have a look at the next person's reply. Many thanks, and I will bear it all in mind. I just don't understand why these new super-duper Extenders didn't do the job.

Do you have other mobile devices that can connect to your wifi with out issue?
    Try this:
Reboot ipad by pressing and holding both the home and sleep/wake buttons at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go. Then try to connect to network.
Go to settings, Toggle airplane mode on/off. Make sure bluetooth is off. Turn on wif (airplane mode off). Try to connect.
    Reset Network Settings
Go to settings/general/reset/reset network settings. Then try to connect to network.
If its your home router, then reboot router by unplugging for 5-10min. (do this while you're resetting network settings).
If problem persists, then check for firmware updates on your router.(you check router manufacturer support website for downloads and instructions).

  • BT WiFi issues

    Hi there,
I was wondering whether anybody can help me with my BT WiFi issues, basically I regularly connect to the BT WiFi hotspots on my laptop (mainly at home) and use the Cisco VPN service to secure my connections, however every so often the Cisco VPN service keeps breaking and comes up with the following message "Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding.", there doesn't seem to be a consistent pattern as to when the Cisco VPN service keeps breaking and have to re-establish with Cisco VPN service, occasionally I have experienced the following message "Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 442: Failed to enable Virtual Adapter" but this is due to the Cisco VPN adapter not being enabled properly and have to manually re-enable it in the Change adapter settings before re-establishing a connection with the Cisco VPN service, does anyone know as to why the 412 error now and again happens?
Also occasionally after so many hours I get the following Cisco VPN service message "Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the Client. Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding.", this indicates that the session for my connection has timed out and need to log back in again and to re-enable the Cisco VPN service, is there any way of extending the sessions times for the both the Cisco VPN service and the connection? It's just a few hours doesn't seem to be long enough that's all. Recently I have been downloading the preview for Windows 8.1, both x86 and x64 ISOs and have been taking ages to download, I can't conclude that this problem is due to inactivity as I was downloading 2 versions of the preview simultaneously when both the Cisco VPN service and the connection timed out.
My laptop is a Sony VAIO VGN-FE11S, specs are mentioned here http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/VGN-FE11S/specifications but has currently got Windows 8 Enterprise x86 as part of a 90-day free trial I downloaded from the Microsoft website as an ISO in which I burnt onto a DVD-RW. I've also forgot to mention that the wi-fi switch can be a bit dodgy and takes a bit of effort to turn it on at most times, do you think it could be this causing the 412 error or do you think it could be the hardware or software aspects of the laptop including the drivers as I left the laptop with the drivers that Windows downloaded from the Microsoft Update website as part of the installation, or could it be possibly my channel frequencies for either the wi-fi adapter and the Home Hub (we've got a Home Hub 3), the wi-fi adapter or the Home Hub? Your help would be much appreciated as it has been driving me mad for months, we're currently on BT Infinity Option 2 as part of our package. Lastly I've been checking the CPU, Memory and Disk usage in Task Manager and the CPU occasionally peaks over 40% and goes back down to roundabout 25% and stays around here at most times, Memory constantly stays around 800MB and Disk regularly peaks at 100% and mostly fluctuates.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Its unlikely to make any difference, if the wireless signal is poor.
If both floors are on the same mains feed, then a BT Broadband extender may help.

  • Iphone 4S wifi issues 7.0.4

    hey guys
    IPHONE 4S - Help needed
first post on here as im at the end of my tether with this phone.  So after installing IOS 7.0.3 i had no issues untill about 2 weeks in wifi started dropping out intermitently, at home, and office. i took no notice.
once i actually needed to use the Wifi about a week later is when i noticed Wifi was off and i couldnt connect.
so after forgetting the home network and trying to re-connect i kept getting 'Unable to connect' or the network purely wouldnt show.
so i wiped the phone to backup > issue didnt fix
i secondly wiped the phone  to fresh > issue didnt fix...
IOS 7.0.4 released > Install to backup > issue didnt fix
    booked into genuis bar ...
they performed diagnostics > all clear
they wiped phone to IOS 7.0.4 > Hey presto , worked like a treat .... but wait
now 2 days later (sunday , phone got fixed on friday)
Issue returned. Thought maybe the music or pictures or apps i reinstalled off the mac were corrupt and brought the issue back (unlikely)
another fresh install to IOS 7.0.4 (this time, new playlist and no pics for the phone)
    Minimal apps reinstalled
    (ISSUE NOT FIXED) !!!!
im getting so annoyed. the Home network keeps coming and going....
anyone got any ideas. (i know its not the broadband as i have many other things hooked up to it and all work perfect, i.e. Tv, Mac, Ipad, Apple TV etc)

ChrisJ4203, thanks very much for your input.  I don't mean to turn this post into an endless debate, but frankly I am still having a hard time believing that the WiFi died as a result of a hardware failure.
My logic might be flawed, but here it is:
While the iPhone 4S got very hot when wirelessly downloading and installing iOS 7.0.4 over the WiFi network, the WiFi chip and antenna had to be functional to complete the wireless iOS update.  Apple was very clear that iOS 7.0.4 is too large to download and install via cellular service.  Accordingly it would appear that any hardware failure had to occur in the few minutes between the download/installation of iOS 7.0.4 and its first use.  That window of opportunity is incredibly small in an otherwise flawless hardware performance.  I am not a big believer in long shot coincidences, so a WiFi hardware malfunction seems highly improbable to me, but not impossible.  A firmware/iOS conflict still seems more plausible to me.
I also don't read much into Apple's "out-of-warranty" replacement offer at $199.  AT&T tells me that anyone walking in off the street (with or without a hardware or iOS malfunction) would receive the same offer.
I appreciate that some iPhone 4S users did not experience any WiFi issues when they updated to iOS 7.0.4, but such difference could easily be explained if Apple used more than one WiFi chip and/or firmware in the iPhone 4S series.  Such an explanation would also account for iOS 7.0.4 (and 7.0.6) not recognizing the WiFi chip after the iOS update.
Still perplexed, but thanks again for your kind efforts to help.
Wonder if I can limp along long enough to spend my money on an Apple iPhone 6 ... but then again I don't want to be anyone's beta-tester.
I am tempted to switch to a Samsung Galaxy or some other smartphone as long as I will be buying new accessories, but frankly I don't want to waste my time learning a new OS or core apps.

  • Is Wifi issue fixed with the 3.1 update for 1st Gen Touch?

I have a 1G Touch and I have been reluctant to upgrade to 3.0 because of the issues people seem to be having with wifi once they upgrade.
My wifi on 2.2.1 is fine, and I don't want to mess it up...but more and more apps require 3.0.
I'd like to know whether people are finding that the wifi issues are finally resolved with the 3.1 update...or not.
    Opinions?

I upgraded to 3.0 as soon as I got my iPod Touch, so have always had the wifi problems. My home wifi works fine, though slowish. My broadband is a pretty consistent 5.9Mb/s. With 3.0 I was getting under 2.0Mb/s. With 3.1.1 I get between 2.0Mb/s and 3Mb/s (once I got 3.9Mb/s, but only once). I notice from the tests that the meter surges quickly up to about 5Mb/s before dropping like a stone to 2.4Mb/s or 2.8Mb/s. I would be happy for this to be improved but it doesn't really bother me.
But with Public wifi, it's a different story. I get everything from logging on immediately and working perfectly to not working at all. When I can log on to Public wifi, I notice two things. First, it's pretty well certain to fail with secure pages. Second, if it fails to connect the first time, stopping and restarting it will often produce a result. These are classic signs of DNS problems, as I recall from previous Mac upgrades.
I love the iPod, but I would love it even more if the wifi worked the way it's supposed to.

  • I reinstall the Yosemite due to the wifi issue, when finished, the iMovie was not installed, I try to download it from app store, but it's not free. How can I get iMovie back?

I'm using a mid 2014 13" rmbp. I reinstall the Yosemite due to the wifi issue, when finished, the iMovie was not installed, I try to download it from app store, but it's not free. How can I get iMovie back?

It's something to do with the main user account (not iTunes account) on my Mac because I logged in with another account and it downloaded fine, I installed it on the HDD and even though the date in App Store was 16th October 2014, it is the full installer of 10.10.2.
To try to resolve this problem, I have copied the installer app elsewhere and deleted it but App Store still will not allow me to download it with my main user account yet just allowed me to update iTunes.
I had a brainwave last night that it might have been related to me changing the default downloads folder to one not on my boot drive (to save disk space on my main boot drive) but having changed it back, tried again, rebooted and tried yet again, deleted my App Store preferences. nothing has worked.

  • WiFi issues with iPhone 4S & ios 6 update

    Okay here is my issue...
I've been reading alot of issues that people have with connecting to WiFi with their new iPhone 5, iPhone 4S or other devices but I have no trouble connecting to WiFi at all. My problem is that WiFi wont 'work'. The WiFi I'm hooked up to at home doesn't let me do basically anything that requires internet.
I can get on the Facebook app fine and my newsfeed loads but I can't see Facebook notifications, upload photos or videos, read inboxes, look at photos, its very slow etc.
I can't get into the App Store or iTunes at all. It says it 'Cannot Connect to iTunes Store' when I try.
I can't upload photos onto Instagram
Currently I'm into the Simpsons Tapped Out game and I can't go onto it at all.
And there are a few other minor issues I am having.
All these things I can do with my Telstra 3G network however and it ***** because I want to use and do all these things but I have to use my 3G and I've just recently gone over my data monthly usage and been charged extra which I'm not happy about.
So is anyone else having these issues or is it just me and I'm stuffed? I'd REALLY love some help.
I've been lost with what to do because as some are having WiFi issues as well, mine isnt the same and it's hard to find answers or just other discussions.
    Please Help!
    Thankyou.

I am having the same issue since updating to iOS 6.  It has been noticeable on my iPhone 4S and a little less noticeable on my iPad 3 but I think it is happening on the iPad too.  Very annoying problem.  One way to get it to work better is to re-boot your phone.  It will work for awhile then and then eventually not be working anymore and you will need to re-boot again.
Just to be clear with everyone - the iPhone looks like it is connected to the wireless, it gets an IP address but can't transmit any data.  Device:  iPhone 4S, OS:  iOS6

  • Wifi issues with iphone not responding

    Phone: iPhone 4s.
This issue started approximately two weeks ago. My phone initially started with the Wifi connection greyed out, I followed the appropriate steps to resolve this issue, and was successful. Now I can turn the wifi connection on without problems, but my iPhone will freeze (delay), then return me to my homescreen. Occasionally I do automatically connect to my known wifi, but then will disconnect and return to 3G. If I make an attempt to go to settings to manually reconnect, the phone again freezes. The phone seems to freeze after I click settings, then when pressing Wi-Fi, the bar turns dark bold, but freezes and doesn't open. I then have to click my home button, return to the main menu. Also if I open an app during the seldom opportunity my phone is connected to wifi, the phone will disconnect, return to 3G and freeze. I have rebooted my routers, forgot networks, reset network settings. I have thought about resetting the entire phone, but my phone will not stay connected to wifi long enough for me to back up my data to iCloud. I am thinking of stopping into my local verizon store, but I think they will redirect me to an apple store; which is 35 miles away. Of course the problem with me not connecting to Wi-Fi is my increased use of data. Now I am over 75% for my monthly usage with 2 weeks remaining, and do not see justification in possibly having to pay the overage fee. Many times when my phone freezes due to these wifi issues, or will not respond, I have to do the manual power/home reset. In conclusion, I need to figure out how to maintain my connection to Wi-fi, and stop my phone from not responding when I open my wifi settings. Thanks in advance!

My Iphone 4S is doing the same thing..  All of a sudden the WIFI button is gray and not working.  I chatted online with a Rep.  He had me call *228 and hit option 1, then call again and hit option 2.  All of a sudden the WIFI button was black.  But it could not find any network.  I shut it off and restarted it and now button gray again.  I called that number again and still gray.  I read somewhere else that a lot of people have a problem with the WIFI button.  They say it basically just stops working.  This was a replacement phone because the volume stopped working on my original phone.  I assume they gave me a refurbished one because it didn't seem new.   I'm due an upgrade in 3 months.   I'm disabled and just hate driving to the store again.  I wish there was an easier way.

  • WiFi issues with Curve 8530

    Hi,
I am having major WiFi issues with my Curve 8530. Everytime I connect to my wireless router, it takes a long time to connect to BIS, and then if I try to use basically any data at all, my router drops my Curve 8530. Sometimes it stays connected, but I cannot use App World at all, and email, and web browsing is all over the place in terms of speed, sometimes it is fast, while sometimes it is slow, and most of the time it stalls while loading a page. How do I configure my router for use with BIS and have it not drop my Curve 8530 everytime I use data over WiFi? BIS works perfectly over my cellular carriers network, so BIS is activated on my device. I have tried giving my BB a static IP, but that did not solve anything. My router is a Netgear WNR2000. Also, I have the latest device software installed on my BB, and all of my apps are up-to-date.

    Hi,
Have you had any luck and resolving your problem?
We have a similar problem but it's with iOS devices where only one can connect at a time. We have about 10 that need to connect. All other laptops and tablets connect fine.
Power cycling the AX411 fixes it temporarly.
    Darren

I upgraded my OS to 6.1.2 and now I'm having troubles connecting to the internet at work.  I did reset my network settings and inputted the appropriate password and still having issues.  It identifies the network but when open safari or an app requiring internet connection it goes nowhere.  Is anyone else having this issue.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem.  Keep in mind my connection works fine at home.

  • U410 touch WiFi issues after upgrading to windows 8.1

    Hi all,
    I have a U410 touch and yesterday I upgraded to windows 8.1
    I have major WiFi issues.
connection drops after a few minutes giving limited. troblesshooting resets the adapter saying ''the default gateway is not accessible '' is fixed. But after a few minutes the problem comes back. and it goes like this forever.
I have the Intel Centrino N-2230 and I installed the driver I found here (15.10.3.2).
I''ve tried to uncheck the power management option but the problem is still there.
I also have other issues with the dolby system (I see others have the same problem )and my touch screen is not working.
any help will be greatly appreciated
    thanks!

    Hi-
I am also running into the same issue with my Lenovo U410 and it is really frustrating. I also have Centrino Wireless chip with driver version 15.10.3.2 and I have windows 8.1
I bought the laptop from Costco and was having similar issues. I sent it back to Costco Concierge who apparently replaced the wireless chipset on this laptop but now I am getting this issue.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Yoga 11S WiFi issues

    Hi all,
As with many I am experiencing severe Wifi issues with new Yoga 11s. I will try to explain in detail in the hope that someone who better understands how wifi really works might be able to help diagnose.
I have a Talktalk badged Huawei HG533 router. This delivers c.15Mbs reliably all around my house (2xTVs, computers up and downstairs, 2xphones). Using Speedtest.net to capture speeds.
With the Yoga, if I sit right next to the router (as I am now), I get 15Mbs. In other parts of the house I get just 0.5Mb, including rooms where other devices are measured at 15. I have updated drivers and upgraded to W8.1 though I experienced exactly the same problem before the upgrade.
I have tested every room and it seems that it will either work at very close to the maximum (in a few rooms) or drops off catastrophically to 0.5mb or less. There is no in between. I never lose connection altogether. There seems no correalation between the level of signal displayed (4 or 5 bars) and the speed. The 'good' rooms are separated by fewer walls.
I have also observed that on occasion having tested in a good room and then moving to one of the bad rooms it initially shows good performance, before seemingly recognising where it is and throttling back to unusable.
It is as though once it gets to a certain distance/separation/signal strength it somehow 'jams' the signal.
I really neeed to find a solution to this as 1. my office is one of the bad rooms and 2. I am often in hotels, airports etc and need reliable internet even in poor signal areas. Any help much appreciated.

Hey everyone, I just registered here and I couldn't find a solution. Apologies if this has been covered already.
I received the Yoga 11s i5 as part of an internship and after keeping the package under wraps for a month or two, I decided to give it a go and start using it instead of my Microsoft Surface. Everything works smooth and I love it to bits - except for the WiFi.
I was able to connect a few times, but for the most part it just doesn't work. The WiFi icon in the bottom right corner displays the adapter icon with a little red x, and the Windows troubleshooter is unable to find a solution. I'm really not sure what the problem is because, so far, my connectivity problem is entirely random - several times, I was able to connect and use the WiFi regularly only to be greeted with the same problem next time I  start using the computer. The troubleshooter once displayed an error message amongst the lines of "The network adapter is experiencing hardware/software difficulties".
I don't know if it is worth mentioning that I live on a college campus with a dodgy wifi connection, but every other device I ever used is working properly. Any suggestions? Only thing I did try so far is refreshing the system and reinstalling Windows but, to no avail.
    Thanks in advance!

  • For all those out there with Iphone5 WIFI issues,Please READ THIS

I pre-ordered my iphone 5 (Black) got that last week. Quickly backed up my Iphone 4 and Restored my iphone 5.The first thing i checked to see is connecting to my WIFI network at home. And i kept getting a message "UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE NETWORK". I had the iphone 4 aside and i can see iphone 4 is connected just fine. So are my laptop, Ipad and other devices.
So what is different in Iphone5?
After couple of days of head banging, and phone calls with apple support. I finally gave up and went to a apple store , they said, They have not heard any WIFI issues and my case was the first , However to keep me happy they said they will replace my device, But if have the same issue ,they will NOT be able to replace it again. And they even showed me the new iphoen connects to their "Non-secured" apple WIFI network.
So i take the new phone home, and the first thing i try is connecting to WIFI.And i still get "Unable to connect to the wifi network ".And i still can see Iphone 4 working fine and connecting to the same network just fine. With the second iphone5 also not working, I realized it is not hardware, but something surely changed with WIFI in iphone 5. I have a NETGEAR router with its latest firmware installed(2.0.26). I then downgraded my firmware to 2.0.21, then gave a shot.
BINGO..Iphone 5 works fine connects to wifi.and so is my iphone4 too.
So for all those users out there, the fact is something changed in iphone 5 WIFI algorithm. And if anyone really disagrees with me on this, I am going to post a video to demonstrate on YOUTUBE. I believe it is completely UNFAIR for apple to now ask you Upgrade/change your router or its firmware. And it is not fair for router companies to Fix anything to make their firmware compatible with iphone5.
So iphone 5 Users, Please lets us all push for a fix on this issue. WE WANT FIX.

I can't tell you how frustrated/disappointed I was when this exact situation happened to me. I upgraded my wife's iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5 just to find out that it wouldn't connect to my home wifi but would connect everywhere else. Guess what...
    I found a fix!!
On you iPhone go to Settings, General, About, scroll to "WiFi Address". Now stay there.
Log-in to your modem thru your web browser via IP Address. (Keep in mind, I use a 2Wire modem, yours may be different) Clicked "Wireless" for wireless settings, scrolled down to "MAC Filtering" and clicked "Edit Allowed/Blocked Device List". At the bottom, there's a field to which you can manually enter a MAC address to you allow or block. If you're using a different modem with different menus/options, just browse around til you find a similar option of manually adding MAC addresses for access or blocking.
MAC Address = Wifi Address. See where i'm going with this?
Type the WiFi Address from you iPhone in the MAC address field, click "Add to List". If MAC filtering is enabled, it'll be added to the BLOCK list, simply click on the address, and click the double arrow pointing towards the ALLOW list so it'll transfer lists to where you want it, then click save.
Now go back to your iPhone and attempt to re-connect to your wifi network as you normally would & voila!
This worked for me, i hope it works for you as well.
