Broadcast Cable TV in HD?

I just bought a Samsung 50" 1080P Plasma for my bedroom, and since it has a built-in HDTV tuner, am I ok just using the standard digital cable box, or do I need to upgrade it with Time Warner or do I just plug the cable line directly into the TV and ditch the cable box all together?
Downstairs, we have an HD-DVR connected to a 58" Panasonic Viera, but that's so that my wife can record her shows while she's out, so I'm sort of confused about what I need to do to get the same picture quality updtairs in my room.

If you go through the box, but the box isn't HD, well, you're not gonna get HD.
If you just go from the wall to TV, you're not getting digital cable.
You'll most likely need to contact TW for a different box.
Actually, many TVs have Clear QAM tuners so can get the unencrypted channels.  (Re-feeds of networks and that's it on most cable systems.)
Encrypted channels in HD will require a box.

  • Broadcast cable box to ipad

Sorry if this is the wrong forum, new to this.  Is there any product where I can input a cable box signal (standard, not hd) and have it broadcast via a wireless network to my ipad for viewing?  Very simple.  Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.  Did see that in my research, but too many features for what I want.  All's I'm looking for is something to broadcast a video signal on my local wireless network.  Then a way for my ipad to view the signal.  Probably too low tech for this day and age.

  • Broadcasting cable through ibook?

I see there are ways to connect your computer to an external monitor/tv. I'm wondering if the opposite can be done? Is it possible to connect my television cable to my ibook, so that I can watch television through my computer?

You need one of Elgato Systems products.
BTW, this area is for discussing the iBook G3. Since you have an iBook G4, you really should post your questions in the iBook > iBook G4 discussion area so that other users of that iBook can see your question.

  • Cable TV - 720P or 1080i

Hi, just wondering what the best resoltion for regular broadcast cable TV is.
The TV is a Samsung, 50" 1080P. I just got a new HD cable box from TW, and it offers two options for resolution; 720P and 1080i.
    Thanks,

    Thanks,
Should also be an option that lets you match the resolution of the content you've tuned into.
Resolution should be 720p for 720p content, and 1080i for 1080i content.  If you force the receiver to 1080i, it'll scale 720p and interlace it to 1080i, and then the TV will take 1080i and deinterlace it.  You don't want that intermediary step for 720p content if you can avoid it.
Similarly, you don't want 1080i content to get deinterlaced and downscaled to 720p.

  • Toshiba TV with older Mac Mini

    Hi,
I was thinking of buying a HD TV by Toshiba that claims it can be connected to a Computer (makes no mention of Mac) using it’s “PC INPUT (15-PIN D-SUB)“ port. I’ve seen others mention using HDMI instead. What port on my older Mac Mini would I connect to? I think the video port is an HD monitor out.
Anyone have any experience with this? I wanted to use the TV as a monitor for the Mini some of the time.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, and so long for now, TOM

All minis have had some form of DVI up until the most recent model. DVI can provide either an analog or digital signal, and because of the ubiquity of VGA monitors the early minis came with a DVI to VGA adapter. The same DVA connection however can deliver a digital signal if the video hardware in the computer supports it, which the minis always have. Audio is not included in this type of connection however, although some TVs support using a combined HDMI and secondary audio input. Many times one HDMI is specifically grouped with a set of RCA inputs on the back for this purpose.
The big difference in how you connect is that most standard video devices sources have historically used an overscan method of image delivery. The image is actually larger than the screen area you will be presented, so the TV overlaps the outer part beyond the actual viewing area. This is largely an artifact of when CRT TVs had fairly widely varied true display areas, and even broadcast equipment couldn't provide a perfectly consistent image area. Because this practice is still used, most video input methods designed for 'dumb' video source like broadcast, cable, satellite, or set top boxes and players use an overscan method. Some TVs allow you to adjust this for the normal video type inputs, like composite, component, S-video, and HDMI. Computers have basically always used a pixel for pixel image rendering model, so VGA as an almost exclusively computer standard does not use overscan. Thus, when a TV has VGA, that input does not use an overscan method to display the image.

  • Avidemux audio sync problem with MPEG-2 - alt. way to cut mpeg-2

I have a PVR-250 and when I load up an MPEG-2 file that it generated in Avdimux, the audio/video is out of sync (before I make any edits).  My goal is simply to cut out commercials in the file, nothing else. When I play it in any other viewer (vlc, mplayer, etc.) the sync is perfect.  I found that this is known issue with Avidemux.  See below.
Can you guys recommend another piece of software I can use to simply cut parts out of mpeg-2 files?
Taken from mythtv wiki page.  I quoted the relevant text from it here:
    Cory Papenfuss noted:
I would just like to add again that this procedure only works 95% of the time for broadcast/cable captures... about 80% of the time for tape transfers. Avidemux cannot deal with chaining A/V sync throughout the file, and this method will have broken sync with one of these unfortunate captures. The author of avidemux acknowledges this limitation, but says a fair bit of internal work would be needed to fix it.

Thanks, I suppose I can start batch-converting my mjpg movies before importing them inte PE7, if that would make this problem disappear. I'll try that (I have FormatFactory installed, but VirtualDub seems like a nice tool if that is better), although that would make the process a bit more long-winded...
Regarding GSPOT info on a file that works and one doesn't, there are typically no difference between them (except length and content, of course). In fact, as I mentioned above, the same movie did not work until I did some reinstalling, clearing caches etc. Then the same movie suddenly worked OK again.
I attach the GSPOT info on that file.
(I never had this problem on my older XP system that run PE2...).
I will try converting to see if the problem disappears.
    Thanks!

  • Long FCP user considering FCE or FCP on mackbook pro

I've been using FCP on my PowerMacs for years, since version 3. Right now I'm still using FCP 5.1 on my Quad PowerMac G5. I work in broadcast cable and but use my own computer for freelance gigs or personal projects.
I want to buy a new MacBook Pro, and am considering installing the Pro version or having FCE pre-installed.
Is there a side-by-side list of what FCE can't do and FCP can? I consider myself an advanced user of FCP and would be annoyed if I needed to do something on my laptop that FCE just can't do.
Also does anyone know, if I have Apple CAre and FCE is pre-installed and, say, the hard drive dies and must be replaced, they replace it with FCE pre-installed again at no charge? And will Apple Care try to resolve bugs/errors if FCE is pre-installed?

While I agree with Ian, I'd like to mention a couple of features that I expect FCP pro users might miss in FCE: +Media Manager+ and +Log and Capture+ (about other missing features: Render Manager, probably you can do without, source timecode display, time remap, etc. there are some plugins filling the hole..., etc.). Personally I can easily live without them... but I'm not a pro.
Another point: while you can easily migrate a project from FCE to FCP, you cannot do the reverse: you cannot edit an FCP project in FCE. So having FCP on one Mac and FCE on the other doesn't allow you to switch a project back and forth between Macs.

  • So Long to FOX Soccer Channel (FSC) .. to be FXX

First American soccer lost its biggest star, British import David Beckham, now it is about to lose its dedicated cable channel. Fox Networks is planning to relaunch its Fox Soccer Channel as an FX-branded entertainment cable network, a sibling to the cable network that airs Sons Of Anarchy, Louie and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Information about the plan, which is in advanced stages and is already being presented to ad buyers to gauge their interest, was reported by Broadcast & Cable and the LA Times. According to sources, the FX offshoot, dubbed FXX, would be geared towards younger viewers with an emphasis on comedy, creating a cable tandem similar to TNT-TBS where TNT is more older-skewing and drama-focused and TBS goes for younger viewers with comedies. Like its big brother FX, FXX would feature original programming, in addition to some repurposed shows and theatrical movies from FX and fellow sibling FX Movie Channel. There is talk about moving some younger-skewing comedy series from FX to FXX to further differentiate the two networks’ identities. Fox has yet to begin talks with MSO and satellite operators about switching Fox Soccer Channel and its 75 million homes to FXX.
The future of the Fox Soccer Channel had been in limbo ever since Fox and ESPN in October lost the rights to the English Premier League to NBC and its fledgling NBC Sports Network. The remaining soccer programming on Fox Soccer Channel is expected to be folded into Fox’s planned national sports cable network, tentatively named Fox Sports 1, that would compete with ESPN. A spokesman for Fox Networks said in a statement, “We are constantly evaluating our programming offerings and this is just one notion we have considered over the past year or so,” declining further comment.

This makes me think that Verizon will add beIN Sports, so there is a soccer channel available.

  • Why can't I buy HD movies?

Why can't I buy HD movies the same way I can buy HD TV shows?
Apple has now made it easy to buy HD TV shows (and with 2.2, via the Apple TV). You get an HD version for playback on your computer or Apple TV and an SD version for playback on your iPod. Why can't we do this for movies? After all, the HD versions are available to rent!
I am hesitant to buy movies from Apple as a result, because I would get better results buying the Blu-ray version. If I could buy them in HD, it would be a no-brainer.

I can understand why the studios would want to get the most they can out of selling HD movies. But by now they must be seeing the writing on the wall. iTunes and other online delivery services wrote the eventual death of hardcopy media long before the HDDVD/BluRay war ended. If I'm not mistaken (and I am on many occasions), didn't Microsoft and Netflix announce an online delivery partnership shortly after HDDVD threw in the towel? The only hardcopy media of any kind I have purchased since I got my AppleTV are shows and movies that I collect.
I would venture a guess that it's only a matter of time before HDTVs start coming with internal hard drives and wireless capability. In the next ten years or so, the way we watch movies and TV shows will change drastically, and the only reason for broadcast/cable TV will be to watch live events like news or sporting events. But they too will eventually be coming via online sources as well. The broadcast networks are going to have to make major changes in the way they do business and how they deliver their product in order to remain viable.
HD movie sales will be available soon enough. It's only a matter of time.
    98 cents change, please.

  • Live broadcast over cable system

I've been using VC for several years now at my middle school. We broadcast via cable live. We don't use the live streaming setup for the internet.
Anyway, I'm setting the system up for this school year (nope! we haven't started yet!) and I'm having trouble.
VC is working just fine. I believe the problem is somewhere in my display setup. When I broadcast, I can see my desktop image, but no icons, and no VC. When I hit "rehearse" which is way we've always done it, sound is broadcast, but not the show. I just continue to see the desktop image.
I would really appreciate any ideas of what I should try. It's been a long time since I set this up -- and it's worked like a dream. But now, no matter what I do, it's just not working!
    Thanks in advance!!

  • IPod Composite AV Cables no longer recognized by iPod

I posted this in the iPod Touch section but it seems to have been deleted. Anyway, as the title states, my iPod Touch no longer realizes that it's plugged into the proprietary, authentic-chip-containing composite AV cables. I can't figure out why this has happened all of a sudden, since I use the cables very infrequently and hardly ever move or touch them. They've always worked fine, but now my iPod does not prompt me to send video to TV or play it locally on the iPod, it just plays the video on the iPod and broadcasts the audio to the TV. Any idea why this would happen? And yes, I have the right cables. They've worked fine with my iPod Touch for a few months now. And no, my iPod Touch is not hacked or modded or jailbroken in any way, although it's running 1.1.3 with the January Upgrade.

I have been having some problems with the new dock and cables too, although with audio not video. See:

Having a gateway there is not going to be a problem. We just need to configure the Time Capsule correctly to work with the 2Wire.
You will need one ethernet cable to connect the 2Wire to the Time Capsule and a second ethernet cable to temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule so that it can be configured.
The 2Wire you have now should already be broadcasting a wireless network, so once you have the Time Capsule setup, you will actually have two wireless networks there.
Here's how to configure the Time Capsule to work with the 2Wire:
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the 2Wire to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Connect another ethernet cable temporarily from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the row of icons to assign a name for the Time Capsule, a device password (write this down) and adjust time zone settings
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
    Wireless Mode....Create a wireless network
    Wireless Network Name....Your choice
    Radio Mode....Automatic
    Channel...Automatic
    Wireless Security...WPA/WPA2 Personal
Wireless Password....Your choice (write this down)
Check mark next to....Remember password in keychain
    Click the Internet icon
At the bottom, change the setting for Connection Sharing to "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Click Update at the lower right and the Time Capsule will restart after 20-25 seconds and you should get the green light.
You should now be able to connect to your Time Capsule wireless network.
I'm not clear on whether you have tried to setup the Time Capsule to backup your computer. Post back if you need some info on that. We may need to start another thread for that as that will be a different subject.

  • Can I Escape my Cable Company with Internet TV?

I just checked my cable bill today after our free trial of a DVR box from our cable company, and while the service has been excellent (they also have my phone and internet), at $67 a month plus tax and service fees for TV alone, I could buy a whole bunch of equipment and still save some $$. My son doesn't have cable tv but watches hulu for most shows.
I was wondering what the possibilities are, what equipment I'd need, and what are the potential pitfalls of going internet tv and getting the signal to 1 HiDef TV and 2 CRT type tvs (no digital receivers on those).
The latest issue of MacWorld says that the Apple TV interface isn't quite all it is cracked up to be and there are elegato tv thingies on sale at OWC, but I have to confess, although I've used Macs since 1984, I have never bothered to investigate the technology for TV so it is Greek to me. I was not enthused about the idea of using my business computer for storing, even temporarily, huge video files on the HD....
I believe my HiDef TV will receive digital signals from Pittsburgh stations, because before I installed cable, I picked up OTA stations, but that was before the switch, so I don't know for a fact whether that was digital or regular broadcast... That was 2 years ago...
I guess what I'm not sure about mostly is creating a the multi floor setup for my particular situation. My cable company provides me with one cable modem in the basement. The rest of the coax cables are set to stream the HD and Analog signals to the other jacks in the house. (my older TVs -one in the basement and one on the second floor-are SD and pre digital. They can see the Analog signals, but the cable company sells boxes to allow the tv's to get digital and hd signals IF I wanted to pay for them.)
My Setup: I have my computer, router and cable modem box in the basement and one analog tv in another room in the basement, the HD TV is on the 1st floor and I have one analog tv on the second floor (2 floors away from my computer).
I assume that the Apple TV is wireless and perhaps can get a signal from the basement through the floor, but how would I wire up the 2 analogs, even if they would work with the Apple TV... I assume both the Apple TV and the Elegato system works through an internet attachment through a computer, or does the Elegato pull signal from the cable company and make is usable on conputer (but not a TV)...?
Would you, could you, run the signals from the computer back up the coax somehow and feed it to the other TVs?
Right now, with phone, internet, and tv on the same coax system, I can't lose one to save money on the other

0r does the Elegato pull signal from the cable company and make is usable on conputer
Yes. The El Gato devices are for getting content from an antenna or cable connection into the computer. If you want to bring OTA television broadcasts into your computer, a device like those made by El Gato might be of interest to you.
The Apple TV cannot (without hacking) access content other than from the iTunes Store, so it would not be useful for getting shows from other sources such as Hulu. You'd therefore need to figure out how to connect your computer(s) to your various TVs. Working out all the various distribution issues involved in HDMI and analog would probably be better taken up on an AV-related from such as the AV Science Forum.
As to the "pitfalls" of dropping your cable service, the largest pitfall is that though a number of TV shows have been made available on the Internet, by no means have all, or even a significant percentage, of the available shows been made available for streaming or download. So before you drop your cable service, you'll want to investigate whether or not the shows you care about are available somewhere on the Internet, at a price that you deem reasonable (some are made available for free by including commercials but some you have to pay per episode).
Another thing to consider; you may find that you're getting a "package" deal if you, as you indicate, have TV, Internet and phone all from the cable company and that if you drop one service, the price on the others will go up. This may make dropping TV service less attractive, so be sure to check that out.
    Hope this helps.
