Broadcast quality, not quite there....?
Looking for some advice from the powers that be! I have been editing for web based stuff for years and had a client that wanted me to do a TV commercial. After upload to HD TV, ABC Network it looked ok, but not what I wanted. I will explain my workflow and please tell me what I should do different...
Sent spot in H264, 59.94fps, 1280x720 as requested by network. Shot the footage in 29.97 1080p, converted with Mpeg Streamclip
-After I saw the spot on HD TV the color was off which I can change, needed to lower the saturation. I am editing on a Macbook Pro (new Mac Cylinder shape computer with thunderbolt monitor on order). Do I need an external such as a TV, to edit on so that I can see the outcome as it will be on TV?? What is my mode of operation here?
-Next, there is a curb going up a road from bottom left to top right of the screen, so the curb is diagonal, but there is very tiny lines that run horizontal (left to right) on the curb..? Wondering if that is a "deinterlacing" problem? Will it fix this if I choose the deiinterlace function on Mpeg Streamclip?
-This sort of pertains to the above question. My graphics, letters, where the "S" is in the words on screen they look kind of like the curb I described above? In other words if it is not vertical or horizontal line it appears to be broken on TV.
As a side note EVERYTHING looks perfect on the web version! Not bad on TV, but not perfect... Please advise?? Thanks in advancequality
I don't use a broadcast monitor so I'll let others who do address your color question.
As for the image artifact, there shouldn't be any interlace combing if it were shot progressive. But from your description, it does sound like interlaced. What's the camera?
Wondering whether it was progressive shot in an interlaced stream and FCP isn't reading it correctly.
Also, try a custom test project set to 720p. Bring one of your 1080 clips into FCP without reformatting in Streamclip.
Export the clip as a Master File. Check for artifacts in QTX.

PS, If you used one of the Web presets, they automatically de-interlace.

BWF Import, not quite there yet...
Hi there,
I just downloaded the 5.1.2 update and was quite excited by the new (at last) BWF import feature. So the first thing I tried was to import some BWF files to see how it works. The files I have at hand are BWF, Polyphonic files, with 24fps Timecode. They were originated with an Aaton Cantar and polyphoniced' using Majax.
I have to say that I'm not impressed:
- The resulting Clip in the browser has a 25fps TimeCode. It cant' be changed.
- The sc/take info, as well as the info typed in by the sound recordist don't appear in any of the columns.
Am I doing anything wrong?
PierreHi Pierre,
I think unfortunately the BWF support announcement makes it sound a little better than it actually is. Its a good step, but there is by no means full BWF support in 5.1.2. For a really detailed intro to what's going on here is a post from Andreas Kiel (who develops BWF2XML):
Hi all,
One of the new features in Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 will be enhanced QT metadata support and
support for the Broadcast Wave Format. (More informations about BWF can be found at the
EBU Website.)
As I did one of the (living) applications to integrate BWF into a FCP workflow I got a lot of
questions from users and potential user about the "BWF compatibility" feature in FCP 5.1.2
and how BWF2XML compares to the options in FCP.
Some additional information about uncompressed/HD/film workflow and audio can be
found at:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/white_papers/L328398A-

USL328398A_HD_Workflow_FilmTV_FCPwp.pdf%22
Introduction:
Beside all the other improvements with this new version of Final Cut Pro, one of the big
improvements is that this new version makes extensive use of all the new QuickTime
structures, allowing QuickTime metadata access and tc64 timecode (which is audio
timecode). This last feature has been tested with a lot of different files, and nearly all files
with tc64 information showed up correctly.
The QuickTime metadata access will allow third parties to create QuickTime components
with metadata - like the DPX/Cineon component from Bob Monaghan at GlueTools, the
first of it's kind. This will also allow other companies to create a QuickTime components
for MXF, IMX etc., and you'll be able to drag a MXF (or something like that) to the timeline
with all the metadata included. So stay tuned for future announcements from third parties.
tc64 audio timecode is something new in QuickTime:
QuickTime is interpreting the BWAV header entry for the samples after midnight - most of
you (at least those who are interested) can already check that: just open a BWF file in
QuickTime Player Pro (7.1.3), press cmd-J and enable the TC track. You'll see the samples
after midnight (don't save when closing the file).
Final Cut Pro now makes use of this this QuickTime feature, and creates a timecode based
on the tc64 samples after midnight and the sampling rate. This will result in seconds after
midnight. The seconds can be converted to timecode by extracting hours, minutes,
seconds and partial seconds, where partial seconds will be converted to frames based on
the timecode base.
The timecode base is complicated to figure out, since mostly it's not written to the header
of the BWF file. And even if it is, QuickTime won't interpret it, since it is nearly impossible
to automatically interpret all the ways the header is set up. There maybe other information
in the header like reel, scene, take, note etc. However, this currently won't be interpreted
by QuickTime as well. As opposed to a QuickTime timecode track, reel information is not
kept in a tc64 track. So if QuickTime doesn't interpret it, Final Cut Pro can't either, and for
the timecode, it will probably take the current timecode base of the project, which might
differ from the original sound recording.
With audio, there are also things like 29.97 NDF (which is not available in Final Cut Pro
right now), and the samples after midnight also may be based on either real world seconds
or NTSC seconds. Plus, there may be playback instructions in coding history. All of this is
quite a complicated thing, and it will be left to the user to think about the setup in
advance.
File formating and appearance:
BWF can show up in either polyphonic or multi-mono format. Both of these formats do
have advantages and disadvantages.
Polyphonic files are easy to handle. As all tracks are included in one file, they are faster on
transfer from the audio harddisk recorder than mono files. Polyphonic files are also easy
to import with the new Final Cut Pro feature. They have the disadvantage that removing
unused tracks is difficult when it comes to exchange with other audio workstations or
when using XML and reconnect, since they are interleaved.
Mono files take longer when transfer from the audio harddisk recorder since the de-
interleave has to be done prior to transfer. They also have the disadvantage that they can
only be imported as discrete files, and need to be connected "channel by channel" within
Final Cut Pro, which makes the process much more tedious. The big advantage of using
mono files though is, that you can remove (or even add) channels and will have no
problems when doing an interchange with DAWs, via XML, or with content management
systems. The channel files can be handled by Media Manager up to a certain extent when
left untouched, or fully when converted to a .mov format.
More detail about the two kinds of timecode tracks:
The QuickTime timecode tracks we are used to working with behave, let's say, just like
another "movie" track, so you can step thru frames.
tc64 reads the timestamp of an BWF audio file - this happens only once, so it behaves like
a long frame, which can't be stepped thru by samples, frames, seconds etc. It's just one
frame when activated - even though it shows the samples during playback.
The QuickTime timecode track forces a file into a specified playback behavior, which is
user-defined, and even can be changed within Final Cut Pro (within certain limits). It can
also be used as AUX TC in synched clips.
tc64, when used in QuickTime/Final Cut Pro, just gives a reference which relies on the
sample rate to get the time. To change the playback behavior, you need to change the
sample rate "virtually". This means that the file's samples are not changed but the "this file
is sampled at" description will be changed. This can be done with a third party application
outside of FCP (this is our current info about changing playback, and it might be wrong).
As said above, with QuickTime timecode there is timecode timebase and reel info, with
tc64 there can't be timecode timebase and reel info.
What about bringing BWF2XML and the new QuickTime/Final Cut Pro features together?
This should work cool, since Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 will accept the tc64 for first time ever, and
BWF2XML can supply you or Final Cut Pro with the additional metadata without converting
to QuickTime timecode (though there are still a lot of advantages doing that).
But it needs some additional steps done with BWF2XML, like changing playback settings to
apply pull-up or pull-down. If that's done, BWF support in Final Cut Pro will be exceptional
compared to other NLEs, and conversion will be lightning fast - even if there is no direct
import plug-in for this "combined" import. With the new XML version 3, things may
become easier and BWF2XML may work as a pseudo importer plug-in.
Conclusion:
So why do I write all these mostly "negative" things (about FCP)?
Pretty simple, since working with these relatively new formats and devices isn't that simple
for most video and postpro people.
Apple made another big step into the tapeless future, as well as some of you who made
this step using "new" devices and formats. With new devices there is always the problem to
establish something like a "common sense" for set up and workflow, which doesn't exist
right now.
So if a BWF import into Final Cut Pro would give you an erroneous result, don't blame
Apple and don't start threads about blaming Apple, they made the above step, and they
too will probably run into similar problems as any of the other companies - like me - who
are dealing with BWF, machine setup, file setup and naming as well as user setups.
Other companies just restrict, maybe by the amount of channels, maybe by the titles/
names of metadata entries, maybe by kicking out metadata entries - and still the other
companies look to be a little bit ahead.

Miguel is right, your query as written would not return the data you seek. Even if it did, your nested <cfoutput> would not display each individual firefighter like you want, either.
In both cases you are misunderstanding the use of the grouping. When you use "group by" in SQL, or "group" in cfoutput, you are asking for detail rows to be discarded from the results. I suggest studying your SQL documentation and your CF documentation.
Meanwhile, this should work better:

Solaris 10 6/06 ZFS and Zones, not quite there yet...
I was all excited to get ZFS working in our environment, but alas, a warning appeared in the docs, which drained my excitement! :
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-1592/6mhahuous?a=view
essentially it says that ZFS should not be used for non-global zone root file systems.. I was hoping to do this, and make it easy, global zone root UFS, and another disk all ZFS where all non-global whole root zones would live.
One can only do so much with only 4 drives that require mirroring! (x4200's, not utilizing an array)
Sigh.. Maybe in the next release (I'll assume ZFS will be supported to be 'bootable' by then...

Sigh.. Maybe in the next release (I'll assume ZFS

So yes it should be fixed by the time full support for ZFS root filesystems is released. However last I heard, full root ZFS support was being targeted for update 4, not update 3.

Landscape typing not quite there?
As I continue to get accustomed to this new update to 3.0 I am noticing some things that could be improved. Today I viewed a voicemail and tapped the arrow to the right of it for more detials then saw there was a share contact option there. Tapped the option to share and it opened a new window for an email. I turned the iPhone so I could type the email in landscape mode and no dice. Looks like when you are sharing contact info you will have to type it the old school way.
Works fine for me. Shouldn't matter how you go there, as it is still the same email app thus the same code. It isn't a special screen or app.

Macbook not quite there...
Hi,
My macbook pro has been running brilliantly until yesterday... Hopefully someone here can help!
I think the problem may be that I left my mobile charger at the inlaws house so used my usb cable to charge my phone whilst I was using my mac. That is the only thing that I can think of as to why my mac is not not starting up.
All that happens now is I get the grey apple logo screen with the spinning icon for about 5 seconds then the whole computer shuts down again and just powers off to be back at square one.
I am not the best mac user but I do need it for my business which I run from home so any fast help would be very much appreciated.
Regards,
JarrettHi jarrett;
Charging a phone on usb should not cause the problems you are having. My suggestion is to put the install media for your MBP in the optical drive and hold down the "D" key while booting. That should start Apple Hardware Test which will check your hardware for you. Let us know the results.

I'm experiencing a not-quite-crash every time I attempt to open firefox on my new computer. What happens is that the menu bar (which I prefer to have visible instead of that orange single-button menu) has all the letters on it turn gray, and I lose my ability to click anywhere on the page, including to close it. If I attempt to close the page via the taskbar it doesn't let me. It does, however, let me open new windows via the taskbar which don't have the same problem, which allows for an easy-but-inconvenient fix. I've tried it out and it does not have the same problem in Safe Mode. As a result of not being a "true" crash I can't give a crash ID, so you won't be able to trace it that way, sorry.

I want to connect my new MacBook Pro via DisplayPort to a Dell U2410m monitor.
But the signal only comes as YPbPr, no RGB and bad quality. Is there any solution?
It works with the mini display port to DVI adapter from Apple but I want to use the DisplayPort.J~
cmelbourne91 was suggesting HDMI because many of the MDP/Thunderbolt to DVI adapters come with an additional DVI to HDMI (not Apple's) and you likely won't find any MDP to HDMI becuase of something weird with one of the Apple or HDMI related patents and the type of cable/jack/plug required for it.
As for my computer (15" MBP mid 2010), it almost seems as if I have your problem but intermittently. When connected to an external monitor or projector, the thing will project just fine, but then after some time (and no movement of the computer, cables, or screen) the connection quits. Sometimes it comes back on, sometimes it does not, but it basically registers as if there is no external display.
Any additional info on this? -
Sound quality not as good as older iMac
At work I have a 2.4GHz Intel Duo Core 24" iMac. The sound is awesome. It gets quite loud and the bass is deep. My new LED display sounds like a tin can. It has such high treble and no bass even though this is a 2.1 system. I can tweak it using the equalizer in iTunes but when I am on the web, I am stuck with this poor sound quality. Could there be something wrong with the speakers or is did Apple make them worse?
You are right actually....
there was one review somewhere (maybe engadget or ars technica?) that stated the sound was NOT as good as the iMac speakers.
I was looking for some kind of mod to upgrade the internal speakers , but have not found it ! -
Broadcast quality uncompressed video to Keynote solution???
World,
I would be really grateful if someone would help. I've done a lot of searching and cant find a definitive answer. I am looking to design a solution for generating the best quality video output through Keynote.
I am used to making slide presentations using Powerpoint/Keynote, with video output from an alternate device. My objective is to output highest quality video of around 5-6 minutes.
Most projectors are 1024x768. (Although I understand many projectors now are WXGA at 1280x800).
If I have a budget I use a professional operator and request SPBeta or a DigiSP, Pal player. In most cases however there is no money to spend and so I use a DVD player. In both cases the video is of course 720x576 (Pal).
I have the video source files as uncompressed broadcast quality, captured with various codecs, eg "Blackmagic 10 Bit, Integer (Big Endian)".
What I want to understand is whether I can compress the video files and run it through Keynote in a way that will not compromise the quality.
1. What quality is achievable?
Using a MacbookPro for output, what quality is achievable, when compared to what I am am familiar with from a) DVD and b) broadcast quality player? Assuming the same decent quality XGA projector.
When I first looked at this some years ago, there were some resolution conflicts using slides and video in Powerpoint.
But it seems to me that things have moved on and I should be able to get a comparable quality video image from the Mac, as compared to using a player. Better even (???). Good as DVD?? Good as a broadcast quality player?? Is this correct?
One of the issues that may have some impact (the impact of which I don't fully grasp) is that normally a video projector will require a change of the input "source" setting from "data" to "video" for the different outputs which presumably changes the resolution from 1024x768 to 720x576. Depending on the "source" setting.
Whereas with the solution I am seeking to plan here, I am channelling a 720x576 resolution video (however it may be compressed) into Keynote, which is outputting it at 1024x768 (to match the data/slides output resolution). That sounds really problematic and a quality killer to me. But perhaps Keynote does this well (???). Perhaps there is a conversation tactic that I can adopt to solve any issues.
So, then, which if any compression should I use, what compression format etc? I don't care about cost (give or take a few hundred) or hard disc space. I am looking to design the best solution. Using a MacbookPro as engine. I am not looking for a solution that will work "OK" or look "pretty good". I am looking to design the best solution to get the best output of the video.
But really I suppose I am trying to understand whether it is time to definitively get rid of the DVD player because I should be able to achieve that quality, definitely, as a minimum ????).
This seems like one of those things that is really easy if you're working in the space all the time. But hard to work out if you're coming at it from the purely "technical research" angle, as I have been.
Any help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!
StephenWhat is your source material?
Remember that the Hollywood films are mostly shot on film at 24 fps. The film is then scanned in at an amazingly high resolution. The online H.264 files are compressed from that and at 24 fps.
Let's compare that to DV, for example. Not only are you starting with far fewer pixels, you're working with 60 interlaced fields. That often gets turned into 30 frames per second for the online file.
So you've got two problems here: 1) Fields combining won't be as good looking as starting with a progressive format and 2) by having 30 fps instead of 24 fps you're going to have a larger file size even with the same settings!
Ok, so maybe you're working with HD video. You're better off, but it's still not even close to the same resolution. And unless you're working with some kind of 24p format that you've properly converted, you're still dealing with 30 fps. (Many 24p modes on cameras are actually recorded at 30 fps, and have to be properly converted later.)
I don't know if any of these things apply to you or not, but hopefully it's given you some clues. The bottom line is, this IS a "garbage in/garbage out" situation, even though your video is not "garbage." It just means that you're fighting an uphill battle here by comparing yourself to something that started at a much higher resolution to begin with. That makes a difference, even when everything is shrunk down to the same size in the end. (And that 24 vs. 30 fps thing is a big thing too.) -
Using Compressor for broadcast quality?
I apologize for posting this question here, but I did a search and found in one thread that nobody goes to the Compressor forum and they all post here.
Are there any online tutorials on what the best steps are to preparing a broadcast safe MPEG2 file? There are so many options , and I honestly have not used this part of FCP much. We've got a computer playback system now and it's something I am going to utilize more often now.
Or if anybody reading this has a suggestion to steps I could take I'd appreciate it greatly.
Thanks for any helpFrom what I can gather, it won't be as easy as creating a file with Compressor. For starters, you will probably need to "mux" (that is, mix the video and audio together) so this automatic system will play the program when you provide it to the server. This will need to be done in a program like DVD Studio Pro. Below are some VERY BASIC step-by-step instructions. If they don't make sense, pull out your manuals and start reading. I've left out explanations and alternatives as time and space doesn't allow for everything. That's why they have manuals. But here goes otherwise:
Export the final FCP timeline out as a Quicktime file. You can do this as a self contained movie but it's faster if you don't. Place the resulting file where you can readily find it. (Note: you can also export directly from FCP to Compressor. This is a long way to do it, as FCP has to first encode it out to Compressor.)
Open Compressor and drag your new QT file into the Batch window. Look over to your right in the same Batch window under Settings and using the pull-down menus, choose something like "MPEG-2 60 min High Quality Encode". Choose "All" in this situation because you'll want to go ahead and encode your audio too. You should see two entries: one for audio and one for video. Note the Destination tab (where the file will end up). In this regard, I suggest you use the pulldown menu and choose Source. This will place the resulting file(s) in the same location as the QT file. Click Submit to begin encoding and sit back, have some iced tea and wait a while.
When it's done, open up DVD Studio Pro. (If you don't have Studio Pro, then you're really stuck because -- again-- you have to provide it as a format that the player, be it server-based system or disc based, can read). But let's assume you have DVD Studio Pro and when it opens, import up the two files into your Assets (bottom left corner). When they import, drag the video (the one with the .m2v suffix) over into the Tracks timeline. Since they both have the same name, but different suffix, the audio file should follow over and sync up with the video. You can test it by playing the Timeline. Now go to the top left hand corner of DVD SP and click on the disc icon within the By Type window. Over on the right of the interface, in the Disc window, you'll see the name of your disc (probably Untitled) and under it, a pulldown menu again. Holding it down, choose Track 1. Save your project under a name, like the name of your video. Click on the little hammer, or Build, icon near the top middle of the DVD SP interface. You'll be asked where to place the results. Create a new folder and name it-- and decide where it will be placed. Click Build and sit back. This too takes a while. When done, you can upload the resulting folder (with the two folders that will be inside labled VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS) to your server. How your "juke box" player system will locate your file is beyond me but I'm sure there is a way to make it locate the folder. When it does, there are instructions written in the DVD standard so the player can play the program.
Once again: this a very basic explanation!! But you didn't really ask for details. If you get stuck, try some of the tutorials in FCP/Compressor and DVD Studio Pro. Good luck!
Oh yeah, as the others have written, "broadcast quality" is a very loosely based term these days. When providing programs to media outlets as "DVD quality", it usually means as good as a quality you can get with the amount of space on a DVD. This all depend on your bit rate and the length of your video. There are bitrate calculators out there that can certainly help!

ITunes (Windows) does not quit properly
Closing windows version using "x" at top right corner of screen or selecting Exit from file menu makes iTunes clear the screen, but it's still runnning.
I have to do a ctrl-alt-del and then manually quit the process tree.
Otherwise, re-clicking on the iTunes shortcut or even doing a "Start->iTunes" will get you a spinning clock and then nothing on screen.
Windows task manager will claim it's running, but there is no interface.
Sometimes Windows shutdown is hung up because a program named (looks like about 20 open boxes but with an iTunes logo) is running, but will not quit.
itunes Mac on same network connection works flawlessly.
Any suggestions?
Win/Mac Mini Windows XPCould be antivirus or malware, have you checked your PC for Viruses and ad/spyware? Also try disabling antivirus. you could run a check on windows and see if some files in windows is corrupt by running chkdsk/ error checking.
Open "My Computer" rightclick on your harddrive, hit properties and select the "tools" tab. under "Error Check" hit check now. you wll get a pop up basicly saying it will run when you reboot or something like that. hit OK and then reboot. the program will run after booting up, and when its done it will load windows. -

Mail Viewer Window Does Not Open on Launch. Mail Will Not Quit. MAIL BADGER
<UPDATE> After detailing all of the problems below, I discovered that trashing the Mail Badger bundle solved all of the below problems. I am still posting this just in case anybody else has this problem.
Problems:
1. When opening mail.app, the program opens, but it does not launch a Viewer Window. I can open a viewer window manually from the File menu, however.
2. When quitting mail.app, it will not quit. It does not matter whether I hit command-Q, or Mail>Quit Mail, or right-click on dock icon and click Quit. The only way for me to quit is Force Quit. No matter what Quit command I execute, nothing happens. The Viewer Window does not close. (The Viewer Window will close on command, however, either by clicking the red 'x' or by command-W, or by File>Close.
3. Cannot send mail from mail.app. Upon clicking "send" on a new email, it just goes to the Outbox and sits there forever. I can try sending the email again from the Outbox, but nothing happens. (I have 4 gmail accounts, with a couple thousand messages between them. There are no problems with port configurations or smtp servers or anything like that - I am fairly certain anyway because nothing has changed w/ regard to the account settings between the time it was working and the time it stopped working.)
4. After minimizing the Viewer Window, clicking on the mail.app dock icon does not restore the Viewer Window. The only way to restore the Viewer Window is to click on the Viewer window itself in the dock, rather than clicking on the application icon.
Notes: I have installed 10.4.10. I have also installed Safari Beta 3.0.2
I previously installed Safari Beta 3.0, then uninstalled it and upgraded to 3.0.2. I don't recall when the problems started, (under 3.0 or 3.0.2), but they all happened at the same time (rather than one at a time).
I have uninstalled Safari 3 and reverted to Safari 2, but this does not fix the problems.
I have repaired disk permissions.
I have booted from the OS X Install disk and repaired my startup disk.
I have not had any problems with Safari 3 "hanging" on install, thus corrupting the WebKit, as described in other threads.I had the same issue and resolution. Spotlight search for "Mail Badger" and deleting everything resolves the issue.
I'm also running Safari 3.0.2 and 10.4.10...
I've emailed the developer to let him know about it..
