Broadcast request 16:9 to 4:3

I will be ask to convert 16:9 content to 4:3 for broadcast standard using FCP, is this possible and normal in a broadcast situation .
Can anyone show me the steps .I have only work on SD 4:3 so far .
Is there a filter or software in FCP i can use , also which output will i get , letterbox or something else ?

Drop you 16:9 sequence into a 4:3 SD sequence and FCP will automatically scale (and letterbox) it to fit. If you want it to be edge cropped rather than letterboxed then you just need to adjust the scale accordingly. Do you know what the broadcaster wants? They do, so if you don't know then you need to ask them.
Best
Andy

  • Why can't Windows 7 be forced to use DHCP broadcast lease renewal?

I have been going to this coffee shop for 11 years. It still has the same ADSL-based wireless internet service (an old wireless access point connected to the internet through ADSL).
The ONLY way to communicate with the DHCP server in this wireless AP is via broadcast - lease renewal requests to the DHCP server via direct IP address are IGNORED. On top of that, the DHCP IP assignment pool is rather small, so to compensate the DHCP lease
time is set to expire every 10 minutes. This is no problem normally, because an active DHCP client will request a lease renewal at half the lease time, or 5 minutes before the lease expires.
Here is my problem: I had my registry setup to force DHCP broadcast and all was happy - UNTIL Microsoft decided to have an update ADD a "toggle broadcast" flag to the registry and make it impossible to override (so far, in spite of the kb928233
page that supposedly tells you how to do so). Ever since then, I lose my DHCP lease (and therefore my internet connection) EVERY 10 MINUTES.
BTW, the KB928233 page has manual registry editing instructions that are so poorly written that at least 2 or 3 different interpretations of those instructions exist. I tried at least 3 different interpretations of those instructions - none worked. A good
part of the problem is no examples were given of what the resulting key tree should look like in regedit.
I have invested at least 2 days in Google searches and various attempts to get these flags set the right way again - all to no avail. If I can't figure out how to solve this problem in 2 days of trying something is dreadfully wrong. Again, with emphasis,
this USED TO WORK until somebody decided to put in a windows update that broke it.
All I want to know is: for a particular wireless connection how to force broadcast DHCP lease renewal. Some update in the last several months seriously broke that, making it nearly impossible to force broadcast mode.  Oh yeah, it does a broadcast renewal
request EVENTUALLY - AFTER THE CONNECTION WAS TERMINATED! That is useless - I just lost my remote terminal session or file transfer. I need it to do the broadcast request BEFORE the lease terminates.

About 3 years ago (IIRC), when I first encountered this problem I used Wireshark to see what was going on. In the link you gave, the second bullet point under item 1 states that a broadcast DHCP renewal request would be given at 87.5 percent of the lease
time. Wireshark never indicated that such a broadcast renewal went out. It did show the directed request at the 50% point.
There is one other thing that may be relevant: at the time this problem re-appeared several months ago, a new registry flag also appeared: DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle which was set to 1. I didn't put it there, so I surmise it came from a Microsoft update.
At this same time the DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag that I had set to 1 to fix my problem had been reset to 0, thus re-creating my problem.
I have not looked at the traffic with Wireshark this time around, but I do know that I could use regedit to set the DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag to 1, but 10 minutes later (at the exact second of the DHCP lease expiration) the connection was momentarily interrupted
and when I did a regedit refresh, DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag was now reset to 0 with a new lease expiration and *start* time.
I suspect Windows rather than the access point for this reason: on a hunch last night, I tried stopping the DHCP client service, using regedit to set the DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag to 1, then starting the DHCP client service. After this, at the DHCP lease
expiration time there was no interruption of the connection, the DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag was still 1 afterwards, and the DHCP lease time had been extended another 10 minutes with no new DHCP lease start time.
So now my problem appears to be solved once again - and hopefully not temporarily this time.
The laptop I am using has Windows 7 Home Premium edition with SP1 on it with all the latest updates. It does not appear to me to behave in the manner given in your TechNet note on Lease Renewals. If it would behave that way, I would not have had this problem.
I am fully aware that the KB I list is for Vista - it was the only information I could find in what otherwise appears to be a void of information.

  • Suspect 'activity' (log provided & analysis requested)

Everytime I use my Air, after anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes it gradually starts making this loud 'fan' noise... and, if I'm on the internet, it's performance slows down dramatically.
Does anyone have an inkling as to what may be going on here?
    Thanks!

    Martin,
In my OOW session on thursday about Dispelling Myths about Apex I'm going to be sharing some metrics, which hopefully I can share after the session too, which should be interesting.

  • ICal server will not work

I am running a small network on a MacPro running OS X server 10.5.4 with 2 mac clients and 2 windows clients. The OS X server was installed by an apple specialist but it is still not working properly and I find it hard to believe that it is a bug is the software as it seems to be a fundamental problem which most people would have encountered.
Each user has their home directories stored on a separate drive on the server and iCal server is running. However, when a Mac client logs into the network they iCal does not work properly. It either will not show any calendars or if it does then a new event cannot be entered.
Below is an extract from the client message log from rebooting the machine. The first problems with iCal seem to occur at 1:20:48:

Once loaded iCal does not respond and a "force quit" is the only option.
I have looked at the logs in Server Admin and I can't seem to see any problems at about the same time.
I would be grateful if someone could let me know whether this is a bug with the software or whether there is a solution. For the time being, the mac users are having to use portable home directories in order to allow them to use iCal.

    Hi
I've not long ago spotted it. It is a longish log. I would sort out that problem anyway because it can't be good for that user.
What needs to happen is a sampling of a the log server side when the problems occur for the clients. It would be a good idea if you posted a little more about how the server is configured. Are you using Server Preferences to administer the Server by any chance? What is the result of issuing this command from terminal:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Post the result. Did the apple engineer configure internal DNS & DHCP Services to accommodate the web and ical services? Is the web service running? Are you using virtual domains? Are the client macs using the Server to resolve DNS?
As you can see lots of questions. If you are using Server Preferences then I'm going to have to stop trying to assist you. Please don't think there is anything wrong with your server because you are using the application, because there is not. Neither is there anything wrong with the choices made by the original guy. It's just I don't deal with anything other than Advanced. I have little knowledge of Server Preferences. Please don't be tempted to 'convert' to Advanced thinking it may 'improve' matters. It's just as likely it will make things worse.
Consider getting the original guy back in and having him do it for you again. Who knows you may find things will go a lot smoother this time?
    Tony

  • Macbook Restarts itself at completely random times. Obtained log

My brand new macbook automatticly restarts at completely random times. I took it to the apple store and they weren't able to get the macbook to restart itself by having it run at 100% capacity. After the last restart I went straight to console and copied everything that was in there at the time of the crash. Here it is below. Also to note, this has happend both while off, and on the charger. And also not while running any specific programs. I MAY have been running safari through all these. But it has also always been while I was at the computer. If I were to leave it on, every single time I come back the programs would still be running.

  • Kernel Panics all of a sudden

THis morning when I came downstairs my iMac fans were roaring and I could not wake it up - after several minutes of trying I held the power key down to force poser off - when I restarted I got a kernel panic with the fans roaring before actually getting up and running
I force power offed again and this time it came up ok and ran until just a few minutes ago when I have another kernel panic
Here is the problem description from the error report to Apple
Anyone with any ideas on what to do to avoid continued kernel panics

    Hi
    Welcome to Apple discussions
My first iBook suffered from persistent KPs on start up. Eventually I resolved the issue by cleaning the cache files. There are a number of cheap/free share ware apps. My favourite is Tiger (or Leopard) Cache Cleaner from here: http://www.northernsoftworks.com/
For more general info on resolving KPs, try here: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
    Good luck
    Bob

  • Why my new macbook freezes?

It's exactly the 5th times that my new macbook freezes! I don't understand why! The screen remains like a screenshot, it's all blocked! And I can't do anything eccept force shoutdown by holding pressed the shutdown button!
I don't understand if it's an hardware or software problem. I copied the system.log of the last freeze, so I paste it here, hoping you'll help me

Boot (hold shift key down) and run in Safe Mode for awhile. See what happens.

  • System freezes at wake up & location change (AirPort to blame?)

    Hi,
Ever since I got my new MacBook Pro last March I have had an issue where it crashes upon wake and changing locations. I never had this with my previous PowerBook. I wonder if some one has a solution for this as this is a very nasty problem... What happens is this:
    1. I close the lid at night when I am home (location is set to "Home") and the computer goes into sleep mode.
    2. The following morning I arrive in the office and open the lid, the computer wakes up and asks for my user profile after which I login.
    3. I change the location to "Office" in the Apple menu.
    4. The screen is now completely blocked, the mouse pointer no longer moves and the time colon in the menu bar stops flashing. I no longer hear any disk or fan activity.
    5. The only solution is to press the power button for several seconds to shut it down. I press the power button again after which it boots up fine.
    6. The location is still set to "Home" but now I can change the location successfully.
    Remarks:
    a. The difference between the "Home" and "Office" locations is that at home I use a WiFi connection, at work I use an Ethernet connection.
    b. When I login after sleep, it displays a window saying my WiFi connection (called "KR WiFi") can no longer be found and presents me with a list of available WiFi networks. I wonder if the cause of the issue is simply the fact that my home WiFi network can no longer be found, see next point.
    c. If I change the location to "Office" before I put it to sleep at night, I do not have the issue.
    d. This concerns a MacBook Pro, 2.5 GHz, 2 GB of memory, 17 inch with 10.5.4. I had the issue with all OS fixes (10.5.2 was the first one I believe).
I include the console messages. It put it so sleep at 00:55:44 and woke it up again at 09:55:11. The last entry enters at 09:55:15 after which the crash occurs and I have to restart it.

In the meantime I've been reading this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1757875&tstart=0
It looks like a lot of people posting in that topic experience the same type of difficulties I am... And it looks like the Nvidia chipset is just very picky when it comes to RAM.
Currently trying setting the maxmem to 3456MB in com.apple.boot.plist tip from that topic. This is not a permanent solution of course but it will at least give insight as to wether the problems lie with the RAM or something else.
I'll keep reporting here and would still very much like to hear other thoughts on mij difficulties with the RAM.

  • Ip helper-address

    Hi All,
Does ip helper-address work with 2 ip ranges in a VLAN in a catalyst 3750?
    ip forward-protocol udp 6112
    int vlan 1
    ip address 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0
    int vlan 2
    ip helper-address 192.168.0.100
    ip address 192.168.1.100 255.255.255.0
    ip address 192.168.2.100 255.255.255.0 secondary

Normally, you need an "IP-Helper" command in the interface that is away from the resource you are trying to reach.
The broadcast request is received and if there's an IP-Helper established on that interface, the broadcast is passed toward that resource as a unicast ... so that it can pass through any other intermediate routers along the way.
Since you set that interface up as a "secondary," I believe it will work, since that interface is going to receive the broadcast request from either LAN (primary or secondary).
What I'm trying to figure out is why you are multi-netting ... it generally complicates things and is usually only used to accommodate transition from "the old address scheme" to "the new address scheme."
    Are you short on ports?
    Good Luck
    Scott
Are you just short on ports?

  • Airport problems after update Airport Extreeme 2008-004 V.1

Since when i have installed the update Airport Extreeme 2008-004 V.1 my Airport card is giving me problems. The network seams to go down and if i reset the Airport it restart working for a certain time. I have noted that the problem apears most of the times when Time Machine starts the backup on the Capsule (but this is not 100% sure).
I am quite sure the problem is the update because i never had this before.
    This is the log..

Do you know how to remove the update ?
    Thanks
    M.

Did you disconnect all devices from your computer when troubleshooting? Did you restart your computer?
If yes to the above, you may wish to try the repair disk option. Run +repair disk+ from your software install DVD.

The only way I know of removing AE update is to do an Archive & Install. Then use Software Update to upgrade your OS and software. Stop at the AE upgrade you do not want.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you select "preserve user preferences and data" when you performed the A&I?

  • EPC3925 upnp and eth standby issues

    Hello,
I have two issues with my residential router EPC3925 which uses firmware epc3925-ESIP-16-v302r125573.
The ISP has not been able to help because they have no knowledge about this stuff.
The first problem is related to the UPnP feature, when the SmartTV is connected to the network the router becomes unreachable with the effect of being impossible to use Internet with all the computers of the LAN.
The problem happens everytime that the TV or the computers send a M-SEARCH broadcast request that causes the router to be unreachable for some seconds, so even pinging it fails.
Disabling UPnP on the router doesn't solve the issue.
The second problem instead is related to the rj45 ethernet interfaces on the router because if one or more computers go in sleep mode sometimes the router will emit a high pitch noise and is completely freezed, it's necessary to switch it off and on to restore the situation.
I would like to know if these issues are known and how to fix them.
    Thanks

    Hello,
Thank you for your question.  However, this community is for Cisco Small Business Products and the EPC3925 is not a Cisco Small Business Product.
Your product is an internet service provider (ISP) supported product.  In other words you need to contact your ISP or technology reseller that you purchased this from to help you with your question.

  • Loosing Airport Connections - Core Duo

My AirPort connection doesn't work on MacBook Pro handed to me. No bars in the AirPort menu, no network shows.
MacBook Pro 15", Intel Core Duo, 2.16 GHz, 2GB RAM
Running Leopard 10.5.4 with all other Apple updates
    AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x86 - Atheros Card), Firmware: 1.4.3.1
Every once in a blue moon, when the Mac was off for a while, it asks to connect to any wifi network around. It rarely connects to the selected wifi network and then only for about 5 minutes before it degrades constantly (watching it with iStumbler) and in about 5 minutes it's dead. When it connects iStumbler never shows more than about 50% signal strength.
In order to get a signal at all I must be right next to the router, only to die after 5-10 minutes. If I try to join the network, it throws a "connection timeout" error.
    System.log reports:

This happens on various networks (not just my home network with a Netgear router - mixed b/g, channel 6, WPA)
I first checked on my router (switched channels, removed encryption, updated firmware, reset everything). Tried different wifi networks. Nothing would improve it.
I've tried all of the Mac solutions I could find online:
Removing the airport prefs, booting into safe mode, turning IPv6 off, DNS entries, removing and adding the Airport setup, turned the airport utility process off (I use a Netgear router), reset PRAM, Repair Permissions...
I even reseated the card and the antennae (2) in case it was a bad connection.
I finally erased everything and installed from the original disks 10.4.6 and tried upgrading slowly (tried 10.4.6, 10.4.11, 10.5.0, 10.5.1, 10.5.3, 10.5.4), all the way up to 10.5.4.
iStumbler or AP Grapher find the network at the signal strength of about 20% while the Airport menu indicator can't see or connect at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you connected to the router using an ethernet cable? Try this to check that the signals are getting to & through the router. From my own experience it is most likely the wifi connection that is not working as it should.
Make sure that you also do the routine maintenance things such as using Disk Utility to repair permissions. Errors here can affect some processes.
I suggest that you also report the problem to Apple by clicking on the Contact Us link at the bottom of this page. On the screen that comes up choose the most appropriate link at the lower end of the RH column. I would include this copy of the System log. This is the main way we users have of getting Apple's attention. They don't promise any direct response but they will check the issue. You should also give them info about the router(s) you have had this problem with & any other info that might help them sort it out.

  • Best way to do a 4:3 pan & scan in terms of resolution?

    Brethren,
I need to deliver a broadcast quality version of my project in 4:3 pan-and-scan. The project is made up of five 20 minute long pieces, usually holding about 1 or 2 layers of video, sometimes 3 or 4.
I've read a few other threads on this topic but I don't know that these solutions are ideal. Here are the possible methods I can imagine:
option a) apply a matte to each clip in the entire project
option b) change the overall settings of the project to ____?_____
option c) export the movie to a quicktime file and re-import it and then alter the settings
option d) take the entire timeline and "nest" it back into a new timeline and apply a single overall matte to that new nested timeline
    *MAIN QUESTION*
*Which method is the best way to whittle things down to 4:3 and yet preserve image quality? I'm concerned that some of these strategies present issues of resolution loss. I want to avoid as much loss as possible. Is there a good method that I may have missed on my list?*
    *SECONDARY QUESTION*
*Although I won't be "panning" too many clips, there will be a few clips that need to be scooted right or left. In such cases, what is the best method of "panning" while preserving image quality? (I think option "D" is unusable here because you can't pan individually if you've applied the matte to the whole enchilada.)*
    MY SPECS
--The project exclusively uses footage from the Sony EX-1, shot at 24p, true 16:9.
--I edited the project using the XDCAM 1080p 24 VBR 35mbs codec. But I exported it to QuickTime using the ProRes 422 (HQ) codec. The resultant exported QuickTime files are 25 gigs each, which is a bit too bulky for my system's 16gigs of RAM to re-import and re-tinker.
    thanks so much,
    Shanked

    A couple of things -
    • it makes no sense to go to ProResHQ with your source material. It is way overkill. ProRes standard would have been plenty and would have much more reasonable data rates
    • your work flow "bulky" problems have nothing to do with the RAM in the machine and everything to do with disk through put. If you are having hesitation issues, see the comment above re ProResHQ.
    • Why did you shoot 24p if you knew you were headed to broadcast?
I need to deliver a broadcast quality version of my project in 4:3 pan-and-scan.
What format/codec is the broadcaster requesting? Does it need to be delivered on tape?
These are the issues that your solution will need to address -
generating a broadcast 4:3 version, you'll need to:
    a) reduce the resolution to 720x486
    b) allow for some image location manipulation while cropping the sides
    c) add pull down to generate a 29.97 frame rate
If you didn't want to move the image around, the easiest way to do this would have been to simply drop the exported version of each segment of your project into Compressor and let Compressor do everything in one step and in a batch process. With the MacPro set up to run as a quick cluster, Qmaster will allow Compressor to access all cores of the machine and will speed the process along markedly.
Given the need to manipulate image position, you'll need an additional step before the files land in Compressor.
Create a duplicate sequence for each segment and, with the 4:3 ratio crop marks on the screen, manipulate the image locations as nec to maintain framing. Then export a reference version using current settings. (You could do this as a nest as well. I tend to stay away from nests as they can lead to other hard to trace down problems.)
Open up Compressor, bring in the manipulated files, apply the ProRes (standard quality) 720x486 preset, make sure frame controls are on better or best to smooth out the resizing and retiming. Frame controls gives you access to optical flow technology which will do a much better job than FCP alone can generate. Please note: You'll want to run some time vs quality tests. Frame controls set to "best" will dramatically increase rendering times.
Then launch the whole shebang as a batch process and let it run.
If you have something like a Kona 3 and you need to deliver on tape, the card will do the down conversion and add the pull down on the fly on playout to tape. This eliminates the whole Compressor step.
    Good luck.
