Broadcast titles in Photoshop?

I am creating titles for a dv source documentary edited in FCP which need to be broadcast quality. The film will be shown on television, DVD, theatrically on video and quite possibly theatrically on film (after transfer).
I have LiveType and Motion but am inexperienced in those programs. Is Photoshop capable of creating type that will be of the highest quality and color fidelity for broadcast? Do I need to think ahead for a possible film transfer? If I do use Photoshop, which settings should I use 8 or 16-bit, etc. The FCP project is dv NTSC codec, and I have read about and experienced the limitations with type in this codec. Is it worth quickly learning Motion or LiveType to create the type in?
Any help greatly appreciated. I've looked around the board but haven't found a satisfying answer. I want to make sure I don't make a decision I regret later.
Thank you
Patrick

Forgive me if this is not the answer your looking for, but I don't see how Photoshop is a true substitute for either Motion or LiveType. That is, Motion and LiveType are all about creating animated titling while Photoshop is for creating titling elements which then need to be animated in either Motion, LiveType or FCP.
Photoshop is a very capable piece of software and is more than up to any challenge when it comes to creating lush, professional titles, but it's not a substitute for Motion or LiveType.
Perhaps if we had a clearer idea of what you hope to accomplish -- care to describe the kind(s) of effect(s) you're looking to create? -- we could be more help.

  • Creating titles in Photoshop

    Hello,
There are times I want to create titles in photoshop or fireworks and import into iMovie.
When I do them @ 640x480, they come in all messed up.
They look fine on QT Pro.
What is the best way to do this for iMovieHD 6?
Is there a template that anyone can refer me to?
    Thanks, Richard

I guess you get the best quality if you compose the titles in the 720x480 resolution they end up with anyway (you are using NTSC, right?). Then there will ne NO scaling that can distort the image.
So make a 720x480 Photoshop document. You can set Photoshop to use 4320/4739 ~0.912 pixel aspect ratio so you see the correct dimensions.
    http://www.iki.fi/znark/video/conversion/
Then the trick: don't import that image to iMovie because it will scale the 720x480 image. Instead, open it in QT Player Pro and export it as a .dv stream. THEN import that .dv to iMovie. Then there should be no scaling.
Also remember that it is surprisingly difficult to do good-looking line-art for video. You have to slightly blur the image if it contains sharp vertical lines. Avoid some colors in NTSC etc. See also:

Still am curious about the memory usage, though.

  • Can't edit premiere titles in Photoshop

I can't seem to edit any premiere titles in Photoshop.  I create  title from a template using the title tool. I click on the title icon in the project window, but both the "edit original" and "Edit in Adobe Photoshop" options are greyed out.  This happens in CS6 running on Lion as well as both CS5.5 and CS6 running on Snow Leopard. FWIW, I can open a menu from Encore in Photoshop fine, and I'm able to edit audio in Audition okay thru the edit menu.  Does anyone have any idea what is going on?  I also get the same results if I create the title from scratch rather than starting with a template.
I've messed with this for the past few hours and can't make any headway.  I've tried repairing permissions and deleting preferences.  Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forum.
You are correct. Even if one Saves_As a Template, the resulting PRTL file will not Import into Photoshop, or any program, that I have ever seen. PRTL's (Premiere Title Templates) ONLY work in Premiere.
For that reason, I often create my Titles in Photoshop, and Import the PSD (whether as Layers in a Sequence, or Flattened), into Premiere.
I had filed Feature Requests for Photoshop, to Open an editable PRTL, but it seems that the Title Template is gone, as of PrPro CS 6. I found that a good feature, for creating Titles, that could easily be used in later Projects, and have dozens, that I rely on weekly.
Sorry for the bad news, but good luck,

  • Can't open titles in photoshop

I'm working on a trial version of adobe premiere cc 2014 and photoshop cc 2014 and when I right click on one of my titles in premiere the option to open in photoshop is greyed out.
Any idea how to fix this?

As I understand it Premiere titles have their own unique format and can't be edited outside of Premiere. In your case perhaps it would work better if you made your title in Photoshop and then import that into Premiere. There is also now Live Text where you can import an After Effects title template and alter the text in Premiere.

  • Making titles in Photoshop

    1. Is .Tiff a good format or is there a reason to export as another format?
    2. If I am working on a 720 x 480 project can I just make a canvas at this size in Photoshop and make a title in it and export the whole thing or should I crop it first before exporting from Photoshop?
    Thanks.

Question 2 first: Photoshop has preset templates for typical video pixel dimensions in the File > New... menu. Choose one that fits your FCP Sequence Settings and paste your graphics into it.
If you have a logo that needs to be discreet, choose the template with a transparent background, it will composite automatically in FCP. Save as Tiff with the Preserve Transparency option checked to on.
Tiff is excellent for stills in FCP and my personal choice every time. PNG also works well.
Your graphics must always be in RGB color space. CMYK and Grayscale will cause "Out of Memory" errors.

  • Broadcast/SD Titles and Text: Workflow

I'm curious what, when doing Broadcast Titles and Text, is your workflow.
Do you exclusively make slates in Illustrator etc.? Do they look significantly better and function better for Broadcast product than making same in LIveType or Motion. Is there a big quality advantage in Vector based Titles/Text
Do you make any of your Titles/Text in LiveType or Motion.
Is there another workflow for high quality Titles/Text you would recommend?
    Thanks

I've used both LiveType and Motion for titling some very large QuickTime files (1440 x 900 @ 25fps) and the quality is perfect. As high a quality as you could ask for.
I can understand the rationale for saying that Illustrator would give better results that PhotoShop (vector vs. raster), but if you're working with the native LiveType file in FCP you're still in a vector environment (at least I think so - anyone care to comment?).
It's the same argument for using vector-based files rather than pixel based ones for DTP applications that are going to be printed by a commercial printer: The printer's RIP rasterises the file just once at the correct imaging resolution.
To my mind, a vector is a vector: I can't see how Illustrator can give you 'better' vectors than LiveType or Motion - if you're using FCP to 'RIP' either of the original files to pixels, that is. Perhaps using a 3rd party rendering engine would give you better quality, in the same way that different PostScript RIPs give better quality than others.
Maybe that's the reason why some people use Illustrator - as the non-FCP RIP can't handle native LiveType/Motion files?

  • Titles created in Photoshop

Good evening my fellow film fans,
wonder if anyone can help with this query. I am creating some titles in Photoshop to import to iMovie as jpegs. Basically I need to be able to control the fade up and down a lot more than what I can do with the pre-installed iMovie versions.
Does anyone know what size I need to set the canvas in Photoshop to fit the widescreen in iMovie HD?
Sorry if this is not a totally iMovie question but, am hoping one of you kind souls will be able to help.
    Many thanks
    PG

    Good Evening PC Logo:
Since you are from the UK I will assume that you are requiring PAL information. With that said...
As you know, PAL DV clip is composed of 720 x 576 pixels that are wider than they are tall. Photoshop doesn't do non-square pixels. So Photoshop pics get 'squished'.
Fix that by stretching the frame back out again. Go to Image>Resize>Image Size and uncheck the Constrain Proportions checkbox. Enter 768 pixels in the width field. When you re-import the frame into iMovie, it will squeeze the frame back into its original 720 x 576 PAL DV proportions.
    Hope that helps a bit.
    Sue

  • Titles Produced in Photoshop R Distorted

I am creating my own titles in Photoshop at 720X480 image size.  Bringing them into Premiere Elements they are distorted.  Please help.

    Kippi,
    I love the "easy ones!"
As I do most of my major Titles in PS, this is something that I deal with every day.
Similar crops up in the Encore forum, with Menus created in PS and then used in the DVD. The PAR bites a lot of folk. Think that it was with CS, that PAR was added to PS. Because of the display, PS will pop up a warning window, should you Open the Title (or a Menu) back in PS. I leave this on (can be turned off), just so that I am always reminded to check my PAR.
I also use the New Image Preset for my Project, say the NTSC 720 x 480 standard 4:3, PAR = 0.9 w/ Guides, to do my Titles, and my Menus. That gets me started and shows the Action Safe Area plus the Title Safe Area of the screen.
    Good luck, and happy editing,
    Hunt

  • Titles pixelated???

    Hey.
I'll explain this the best I can.
I used a template designed for creating images and titles in photoshop (has tv guides and everything) I added text and images etc. But then when I import (File -> Import -> Files) it into FCP the image becomes pixelated.
    The image is JPEG.
Also the image once imported into the timeline tells me it's at 72% of it's size and only when I make the image 100% it's no longer pixelated. However at the 100% size it's too big.
Can someone tell me what's hapening and how to fix the problem.
    Thanks.

If you are running a DV sequence - as I noted earlier - the image size is 720x480 pixels. When you make a DV image FULL SCREEN on any computer monitor beyond a 1985 era VGA monitor, there are a LOT more pixels on the monitor than there are in the image - hence the pixelated look. You are using many monitor pixels to display on image pixel it will look crudy.
This is why you need to use a true NTSC (or PAL if that is your broadcast standard) monitor to evaluate the material. Desktop Cinema display will not cut it.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended freezes on startup under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit - No splash screen

I installed my licensed copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended today as part of my install a bunch of software after a reinstall of Windows (due to viruses).  I did a completely fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  I've used Photoshop CS3 Extended for quite a while now so I know what to expect on startup but it was previously installed under Windows XP Professional (32-bit). Figured I would give Windows 7 a chance this time around.
Google searches aren't turning up anything.  When I attempt to start the application, I get a window with the title "Adobe Photoshop CS3" (no "Extended" - I seem to recall the title changes later) and the toolbar appears.  However, no splash screen appears and no Product Activation wizard appears - the application simply freezes on an empty frame and a toolbar.  I've tried running Photoshop as Administrator (right-click, "Run As Administrator"), but nothing changed there.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  I tried upgrading to CS3 10.0.1.  Nothing works.  The application simply freezes before it gets anywhere.
I tried calling Adobe Support since this technically falls under installation issues but their phone support systems are down today.  Go figure.
Edit:  I hooked into Photoshop with the Visual Studio debugger and every single thread is executing some variation of WaitForSingleObject() or WaitForMultipleObjects().  The main thread is "executing" somewhere in AdobeLM_libFNP.dll (at address 09619d81 - if I had debugging symbols for CS3, I could provide a function).  There are nine threads "running" at the point the freeze occurs - but all of them are technically suspended due to the functions they are executing - and one thread is in a suspended state.

My Visual Studio analysis was far more informative.  All threads are hung inside of WaitForSingleObject() and WaitForMultipleObjects() calls and the DLL in question appears to be FlexNet-related.  I did forget to mention that I also even manually started the FlexNet service in case, for some strange reason, Photoshop was waiting for it to start.  That also did not work.
(And there is nothing in the Action Center control panel either despite the message saying there might be more information there.)
Edit:  The timestamp above might be a little odd-looking.  I didn't originally see anything in Event Viewer until I clicked the first button to send an Error Report.  Mostly I just skipped that part of killing a process.

  • Getting error message when starting Photoshop CS3

I am getting the following error message when starting CS3:
"This application has failed to start because CML4.dll was not found."
The window title is, "Photoshop.exe - Unable to Locate Component"
Of course, the only button to push is the "OK" button (which should probably read - Something's f-d up. Press here to continue.) After pressing the OK button, CS3 starts and works without issue - so far.  I guess I haven't actually used the part of the program that uses CML4.dll or just don't see any difference with or without it.
How can I resolve this issue - without reinstalling PSCS3? and why does it happen in the first place?

Nikon Scanning Software has CML4.dll as part of its package.  I assume that the Nikon software did not install/uninstall properly and is causing the error.  I have not gone back to do Nikon scans within Photoshop so I do not know if it affects performance. McAfee does not flag it as a virus, and other websites I referred to indicated no viral activity associated with the file.

  • Premiere Titler - a Powerful Tool

The Titler in Premiere is basically a sub-application, within Premiere. It is a little bit word processor, has some of the attributes of Photoshop and Illustrator, with a tiny bit of InDesign, built in, and is very useful. It’s a very powerful tool, and is handy for adding Text, usually, but also Shapes and Lines to a Video.
Premiere comes with several templates for Titles, and though pre-made, can be altered in an almost limitless fashion, with the Tools in Titler.
Starting back a bit, Titles, created with Titler are not really images, though they have some attributes of a Still Image. For instance, their Duration can be set globally in Edit>Preferences>General>Still Duration, but can also be adjusted, by click+dragging on the Head, or the Tail of the Title, just like with a Still Image. Also, they are really synthetic video, so when added to the Premiere Timeline, will have a red line above them, indicating that they need to be Rendered (hitting the Enter/Return key) for smoothest playback. If they are placed over a Still Image, or Video, the same red line will appear, because they are basically an overlay, and their pixels will have to be blended with the pixels from the Asset underlying the Title. If the Title is the only Asset on the Timeline, at that point, then playback is probably not an issue, unless one animates the Title, with either Keyframing, or by applying an animation Preset. Then, to see that animation in the smoothest manner, Rendering might well be needed. For more information on Rendering, see this article: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3484339#3484339
When one creates a Title with Titler, they do not exist as physical Assets, like a Video Clip, or Still Image. Instead, they are just XML code in the Premiere Project file (PREL for PrE, or PRPROJ for PrPro). That means that they are forever editable, unlike a Title created as a Still Image, in say Photoshop, and Imported into Premiere.
When a Title is created, it appears in Premiere’s Project Panel. It can be used many times, as an Instance of that Title is what is placed onto the Timeline. That means, however, that if one uses multiple Instances of a Title, any change made to any of those, or the Title in the Project Panel, will be made to ALL Instances.
Often, one will create a Title, and then wish to create others, based on that first Title. The method is to create a New Title, but base it on an existing Title. The exact steps differ between Premiere versions. In Premiere Elements, one would go to that Title in the Project Panel, Rt-click on it, and choose Duplicate. This will do just that - duplicate the Title, but instead of being an Instance of it, it will be a separate, unique Title. It can then be edited, as is needed. Titler will require that this Duplicate be named. In Premiere Pro, there is an icon in Titler, New Title Based on Current, that does the same thing, and the user will be required to name that new Title. Again, it can be edited, as necessary.
In Titler, everything that one sees is an Object, whether it is a Type Object, or a Shape Object (which can be a Line, as well). The Objects can be Selected (the Selection Tool is the “arrow” in the Titler Toolbar), Deleted, Moved, Copied and Pasted, or adjusted, say altering a Stroke, or a Fill, and with Text, the font, color and Styles.
One can also add Clip Art, or Images, into a Title. Those will be Objects too, and can be moved about, or deleted, as is required.
With a Type Object, one can also Select Text with the Type Tool. That can be used to Select and alter one character, or entire lines of text, by click+dragging.
As text can be either Point Type, or Paragraph Type. On the surface, they look the same, but behave in a slightly different manner. They are also created differently. With Point Type, one selects the Type Tool, clicks in the Title, and begins typing. To wrap Point Type, one needs to add a line break. With Paragraph Type, one selects the Type Tool, then click+drags in the Title, to create a Type Block. As they type in the text, or perhaps Paste it from a word processing document, the Type will Wrap, at the boundaries of the Type Block.
Now, various versions of Premiere offer some animation Presets, for Titles. However, those can be limiting, such as being limited to only one line of Text in PrE. One can create the same animations, but with much more control, if they Keyframe the Fixed Effect>Motion>Position (one can create Rolls and Crawls with this one Fixed Effect), and maybe others, depending on what one wants. Many, if not most, of the added Effects can also be added to Titles, and can also be Keyframed, to change things, over time.
One can also create Titles in Photoshop, and Import those into Premiere. In PrPro, there is an extra benefit from this, in that the Photoshop PSD can be created and then Imported, with the full Layer structure. In PrPro, this Import would be “As a Sequence,” where each individual Layer is Imported as a Clip (each can be animated separately), in a new Sequence.
The Premiere Titler is a very useful and versatile tool, and one’s use of it, plus Keyframed Effects, will only be limited by one’s imagination.

There are several tutorials on Adobe TV, regarding Titles. While they were created in Premiere Pro, most of the material applies to Premiere Elements too:

    Hi Ankush,
what a speed for an answer, wow. Very nice.
OK; at this time, I can´t get support thru the Adobe enterprise support team; we want to buy support, but later .... (not my opinion...)
So, I installed/changed the PSE described in the following document:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/861/cpsid_86149.html
but in the setup.ini file, I want to choose to write down a log file for troubleshooting (like here), install silent (without /qb- oder /passive, the installation is not silen -normaly...) - why not? In the serup.ini file, I found the msiexec parameters inside the setup.ini, why do not here a change to have a log for installation....like described for older PSE versions....
Now, I´ve changed the setup.ini file back to its original state (see below) and only use the steps from the doc above...

    Title=Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 - Setup
    OSErrMsg=Your system .................
And I use the following setup command to start the installation:
    (like the doc from adobe)
    Start /wait C:\"Adobe Photoshop Elements 9"\Setup.exe /UL1031 /V"SERIALNUMBER=1111-1111-1111-1111-1111-1111"
It´s starts the installation completely silent in background - good; ->  I want to have a log file for the installation; how can I setup this thing?
    The installations runs...
The Installation is done, result is 0 -> and I can start Elements thu the desktop icon-> very good.
mmmh. When I have a look in the event logs, I can see, there there many install entries for more products, like MS VC++ and Element programs as I can see thru my install tests before....I think, there is the problem. The first installation only installs the Photoshop editor, not more....
Now: But, when I start Elements, It asks me to change the region/country - can I setup these thru the installion process, the my user don´t need to setup this?
The main goal is done (done? is this right?), when I can have a log and no more region/country settings, it would be perfect!
    Thank you
