Does anyone have an boot cd that includes the driver for Broadcom 5721C1
NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet PCI-E. I am trying to image some new Dell
optiplex 360 and am not having any success. We are using zen 7 sp 2.

I am running Solaris 11/11 X86-64 on my DELL Laptop XPS Studio 1645. All is working fine except for the network driver for Broadcom NetLink BCM5784M Gigabit Ethernet PCIe.

Incompatibilities between Gigabit Ethernet PCI cards and Power Mac G5?

Hi,
we recently bought a Digicom PCI LAN GIGA32 Ethernet card to upgrade our Power Mac G5 1.8GHz server. The OS on the G5 is Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 (8L127).
The issue is simple: the PCI card is recognized by the system (it appears in System Profiler and as a new port in System Preference's Network pane) but Mac OS X cannot properly use it. We tried to connect the card to a Gigabit switch but nothing happened: no led denoting the connection speed turned on on the switch and the Network Status view in the System Preference's Network pane still show the red light with the "No cable connected" message.
We noticed this message in system.log:
jedi kernel[0]: AppleRTL8169Ethernet: phyWaitForAutoNegotiation TIMEOUT
So we tried to manually set the Ethernet speed for the card and indeed it reacted, but we managed to have it working only at 10 Mbps (10baseTX).
It seems that AppleRTL8169Ethernet.kext [1] is used by Mac OS X to control Ethernet cards featuring the Realtek 8169 chipset but it cannot properly communicate with Digicom's card.
The weird thing is that we tried the same card on a Power Mac G4 and it worked flawlessy. Maybe the issue depens on the PCI-X slots available on the Power Mac G5?
Are there any other report of incompatibilites between Ethernet PCI cards with Realtek chipsets and Power Mac G5?
BTW, we noted that the card's vendor doesn't certify the card for Macintosh systems but we didn't manage to find a PCI Gigabit Ethernet card certified to work with Mac OS X and Power Mac G5 hardware. Could you point me to some PCI Gigabit Ethernet cards proven to work with a Power Mac G5 machine?

Meanwhile, I found that the Realtek website features a driver download for Mac OS X 10.4 and Ethernet cards with the 8169S-32 chipset (the one featured by the Digicom card tested).
I think I'll give it a try and let you know how it goes.

Combo USB 2.0 + Gigabit Ethernet PCI Card?

I have been looking feverishly for a manufacturer that makes a Mac-compatible PCI Card that has both USB 2.0 and Gigabit Ethernet on the same card. So far I have not been able to find anything. I am wondering if anyone knows of one that will be compatible with a B&W Powermac with a gig of RAM and a Sonnet G4 500Mhz processor.
On a side note, I know this Mac has limitations pertaining to Hard Drive size and I am curious: If I have a slave drive enabled, is my total combined usable size the 128 limit or can I have 2 120 gig Hard drives? And what is the highest speed drive recommended for the B&W's slow bus?

I don't know of a Mac-compatible combo card like that. Because of the issues with USB 2.0 cards in Macs, you'll have better compatibility installing one that has an NEC controller chip. This stipulation would narrow the field of recommended combo cards even further, if there were any from which to choose. As for hard drive capacity, the 128 GB limitation applies to each drive - not the sum of two drives, configured as master and slave. If your B&W G3 has a Rev. 1 motherboard, the onboard IDE controller doesn't support master/slave configurations (see "New Features" Section 3 - "Revised IDE Controller Chip" on this page). Depending on the amount of money you wish to invest in your B&W, this Acard AEC-6280M ATA-133 controller card would enable you to take advantage of reasonably-priced, larger capacity drives. About six months ago, I bought a pair of sale-priced Seagate 120 GB drives for $59.99 USD each, when that capacity was being phased out by the retailer. Now, you can often find larger capacity drives for less than that. As for bus speed, an ATA-100 or ATA-133 drive is backward-compatible and will run on the slower, onboard IDE bus in the B&W. The spindle speed for most drives is 7200 RPM, which provides a slight improvement over the slower 5400 RPM drives.

Kind of worked it out. I think that the port is 'mini display port' only and not Thnderbolt, doh. I now have a Mini Display port to VGA Adapter and a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adaptor which I cannot use. Since I bought them from an Apple shop with in store support I feel miffed. Qualcomm atheros AR8161 pci gigabit ethernet controller

HELP please! I have called and called and support is not helping. I prefer to used my desktop wired to the internet. But for some reason every so often I get the yellow triangle with the ! symbol. Then I have to switch to wireless. I have called a few times. I even purchased the total care pack. They had me uninstall the qualcomm atheros AR8161 pci gigabit ethernet controller in the device manager. Then restart. Then it works fine. But all of a sudden it goes back to the !triangle and I lose wired connection. It's not my router or modem. My spouse has the exact same computer hooked up the same way and it never has happened to him. Yet it in properties it says its working fine and I've checked for driver updates a zillion times. Sometimes I can go a week with no problem. Sometimes I have to uninstall/reinstall a few times in one day! I am frustrated and the phone help is ridiculous. Anyone have any ideas? I would appreciate it.

PCI Gigabit Ethernet Cards

Anyone have experience with PCI gigabit ethernet cards for use with Linux?
What I am looking for is a good one to go in a firewall box (P3 450 MHz) that won't take too much cpu to run it. A good 10/100 ethernet card that uses the tulip driver will saturate the net with very little cpu usage. The $10 TrendNet 10/100/1000 that I have tried saturates the cpu at only 5 MB per sec transfer.

Is there something wrong with the built-in interface
or do you want to trunk/bond interfaces or route
between interfaces?

Window 10 build 10041 does not work with Intel 82579V Gigabit Ethernet on ASUS motherboard

I updated a computer I have which is a quad core i7 that I built and includes an ASUS motherboard with Intel 82579V Gigabit Ethernet built in. Windows 10 preview 9926 worked fine with this network adapter. Window 10 build 10041 does not, and I have tried
it twice so far. I even went as far as buying a Thunderbolt-Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (Broadcom, sold by Apple)... and while it installed the driver automatically, it did not work either. Each time you try to view the properties of either of them, it locks
up or give an error. In fact, doing much of anything with the Intel adapter icon assures you of not being able to do a clean reboot... have to kill power. I have finally gone back the previous version 9926, which has its issues but no where near as bad
as not having any network connectivity! Does anyone have this issue and a workaround?
Note, there are two images on the windows 10 preview forum that I posted this question on. I could not post the full link as I was getting a message here that links and graphics are not allowed.

I have more information about this, which basically exonerates any issue with the Intel 82579V Gigabit Ethernet hardware or software. I have 3 computers with Windows 10 preview so I have multiple angles to see issues from. With this I have found a culprit
(but I suspect not just the only culprit) in this above mentioned problem...
10041 build combined with installing (or attempting to install) CISCO VPN Windows 7 64bit 5.0.07.0440-k9 client causes the issue mentioned above. I confirmed this on a completely different machine with a totally different Ethernet adapter. First machine
is an ASUS motherboard in a tower system I built, with the Intel 82579V Gigabit Ethernet hardware built in. Second machine is a Gateway Laptop from 2008 which has a Marvell Yukon 88E8057 PCI-E Gigabit adapter built in. Build 10041 will work fine with my 2008
laptop, including the MS VPN client (which I have tested). However, if you attempt to install or even uninstall the Cisco client you will have to do a recovery to a restore point (as I have done twice) in order to get your network working again. Installing
or attempting to install (because it never even does install properly and times out), CISCO VPN client will render your entire network unusable. Going back to a restore point saved me and I am still running 10041 but I can't use CISCO VPN client any longer.
I could with build 9926, including on all 3 machines. I now have 9926 on two machines and 10041 on only the 2008 laptop.
Hopefully this above information helps someone resolve the issue. I will also mention, even though my network is working on the 2008 laptop, I still can't go into the Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections and right mouse click on the Marvell
Yukon 88E8057 PCI-E Gigabit adapter icon. I get an error when clicking on Properties menu popup : "An unexpected error has occurred". So something is still up with my network adapter driver or windows software, but it could be a side effect of all
that has happened with the Cisco software install attempts under 10041.
Another note: CISCO Anyconnect also has the issue.

It looks like I'm accessing internet via that network card from Linux (which I am using right now)...
So do you know what I need to do to get the integrated network card work in windows 98. It should've been 'plug n play' but it don't seems to work. This is what I've tried so far (well, at least something like this): 'Control Panel -> Network -> Adapters -> Add -> Broadcom -> Broadcom Gigabit Network... something...'.
Is this aproach totaly wrong...

G5 Can't See Gigabit Ethernet Card

Some months back, I installed a gigabit ethernet card into my G5. It worked fine for a few months, then stopped working with a message: The cable for PCI Ethernet Slot 3, Port 2 is not plugged in. I wasn't working on the project that required that connection, so I just let it go. Now I need to connect to a different gigabit switch. I installed a new D-Link card into the same slot as before - same result. I moved the D-Link card to a different slot - and got the same error - still referring to Slot 3. Just for kicks, I installed the old card back into slot 2 (the one above the video card). Same error - and no mention of finding two cards or of anything in the other slots. It seems as if somehow all of the PCI slots are being ignored.
Running the System Profiler, I get a "No Information Found" for PCI Cards. None of the lights on either ethernet card come on. Any ideas? Everything else on the machine seems to be working correctly - the built-in ethernet is fine. There are a lot of drives connected to the system (4 on the FireWire 800, 1 on FW 400, 4 on USB). Is there some way to force a re-scan of the PCI bus? or turn it on?

Yes - I tried swapping slots. A gigabit card worked fine in slot 3 for several months. It stopped working - I figured it was the card that was th eproblem. I have since replaced the card, and then moved the new one to a different slot. The Network control panel still reports a card in slot 3, even though there is nothing in slot 3. The new card is in slot 4 (and just for kicks the old card is in slot 2). Neither of these is recognized by the the System Profiler or the network control panel.

ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x in Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 PMac G4

This is my first time posting to these discussion group... I've been going through related threads and have not found an answer to my problem...
I have a Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 G4. Awhile ago I upgraded the processor to a Sonnet 1.8ghz so I could run Leopard.
I just bough the ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x video card. I researched around and that seemed to be a card that would work in my machine. I even read a review on Amazon where someone had also upgraded to the 1.8 processor used this card with no issues.
I do have an older monitor - Apple Studio Display CRT with the ADC connector. So I also bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter kit.
I installed the card and do not get any picture at all - I believe I have installed everything correctly. I'm pretty sure I can hear the fan on the video card in the machine. The monitor is getting power from the adapter since the button lights up when I press it - but it does not stay lit -- the monitor never turns on. Using my old graphics card the monitor makes a little "beep" when it turns on.
In reading the other topics I am wondering if it might be a power issue? According to Other World Computing's profile my machine has a max of 220 watts. Although they suggest this video card as one the will work in my machine.
I have disabled the hard drive that came with the machine (too small) and am using two Maxtor hard drives that I added - one ATA (120gb) and one SATA (500gb) that is connected to an SATA pci card. I also have two additional pci cards with usb 2.0/firewire ports.
In looking at the topics here I came across the link about taping the 3 and 11 pins on the video card. Even though the card I have is 4x/2x not 8x I thought I'd give it a shot. That did not work either.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

It's OK- I don't mind beating this dead horse....
The maker says such to protect themselves from possible claims that may arise due to over loaded systems and power problems when their card is installed in said system.
Of course, 300w would be nice, but they didn't even specify the PSU rating a couple years ago. The Sawtooth, with it's 237w PSU, used to be listed as a compatible machine for the 9800...... They just didn't consider how far a Sawtooth might be modded.
Within reason, the early G4's (Sawtooths) are capable of using the Radeon 9800 Pro. The GE has the same 338w PSU as the DA (they are interchangeable), so there is plenty of power for the 9800.
One thing to remember, the requirements of the ADC port of the AGP slot are removed by using a non ADC card. This really changes the calculations of the power available.

Which leaves your second, and very appropriate, point.
The main enemy of all, though, isn't power. Heat is the biggest concern.
Reducing heat/increasing cooling by using a third party fan on the 9800 is highly recommended. The 9800 is a hot card, and the stock fan is prone to early failure.
Adding additional cooling to remove the extra heat produced by the 9800, by using an exausting PCI fan, will also help the PSU provide adequate voltage to the system, by reducing the amount of hot air moving out of the PSU.
Super heated air moving through the PSU reduces the cooling ability of the PSU. A hot PSU doesn't produce reliable power.
So, add the 9800, add some cooling, and enjoy!

How to tell if my netbook has gigabit Ethernet (and/or can use it)

I have owned an Asus Eee 701SD (the 8GB version) since 2009, and installed Arch on it last summer (a great move :-) ).
The other day, I came across a page on the FreeBSD wiki, which suggested that certain 700-series Eee's have a gigabit Ethernet interface (rather than the usual 10/100). Through checking 'hardinfo' and 'sudo lshw -c network', it appears that my machine might have a gigabit interface, but I'm not sure. This is the output from lshw:

This is a bit confusing - the "capacity" heading above indicates the Ethernet is 10/100, but the Atheros Ethernet interface is given as "AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 Gigabit or Fast Ethernet" (confirmed by 'lspci'), which I guess means it can act as either gigabit or 10/100.
Assuming that all this means I do have a gigabit Ethernet port on my netbook: will the Arch system make automatic use of the extra speed, or do I need to issue any commands, change any settings, recompile the kernel, etc.?

If it were a Gigabit NIC, it would simply be "AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 Gigabit"
Seriously, if the driver is working properly, 100Mbit/s is what you have got. You can check again with
ethtool eth0
which lists the supported device speeds.

G4 (gigabit ethernet) hard drive question

so i am turning an old g4 450 mhz of mine into a file server with old hard drives of mine laying around. i put in 2 of my 250gb hard drives in where the zip drive and cd drive were giving myself a total of 4 hard dries my only problem is when i start up my computer says it cant read the hard drives and in disc utility it reads them as 128gb drives. is the g4 too old to read drives bigger then 150gb? oh yeah and the drives are all IDE

The Gigabit Ethernet only supports drives up to 137GB, or 128GB formatted.
You can use larger drives, but the portion beyond the 128GB will not be used.
Alternatives are, either an ATA PCI controller card like that from Acard, or, using a software patch, with special partitioning.
Check Speedtools HiCap Driver.

IMac i5 27" - gigabit ethernet speed slooooooow

I know there are other (older) threads about this (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2236017?tstart=0) but I thought I'd start a new one.
I have just purchased an iMac i5 27", and find that plugging it into my Netgear GS605 gigabit ethernet switch doesnt work as expected. My older 24" iMac works as espected, just fine.
I am able to get a gigabit connection (green light on switch) and if I try to copy large files form another Mac or my Lacie 2Big Network 2 NAS it works fine. BUT, if I then try to surf the web, my download speeds are ridiculously low (should be 30MB/s, getting 0.4)??
If I manually downgrade the ethernet controller settings to 100B/T, the internet speed works just fine, but obviously local transfers are then crippled to fast ethernet speed, which on a 200GB Time Machine backlup isn't much fun!
I have had many conversations with Apple Support, and returned one of these iMac's already, to find the next one does the same thing - all very frustrating.
So is there a fix? Can the Broadcom chipset be to blame? Is it to do with Jumbo frame support (whatever that is) - the Netgear switch supports it, but not sure about the iMac, and why does the internet speed drop so dramatically, when the file transfer speed works as expected over gigabit ethernet?
Grrrrr. Really frustrating I can't have high speeds on both types of transfer.
Any help gratefully received!

Have you tried Safe Mode (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)

Airport Extreme with Gigabit Ethernet - Does it have jumbo frame support?

Please, can I get definite answer to this question? I do not need speculations as I read some reviews already. Can we have Apple finally put complete specification of the product rather than "popular one" with attachement of protocol numbers?
I just need simple answer possibly from Apple engineering team to the following questions:
1. Does current Airport Extreme have support for jumbo frames (everything above 1500bytes per frame)? (if one does not know what that is them perhaps understanding acronym "MTU" can help a bit)
2. If there is support then what is the maximum supported size of jumbo frame? (Some products do not go above 6k and I read some statistics that traffic somwhere is usually 66% at about 4k jumbo frames and above that there is not much...)
3. If there is no support then does Apple plan on update for this (firmware or hardware) in the future?
Please, do not tell me that someoene ran something with jumbo frame and it worked as I tried yesterday LaCie Ethernet drive with supposedly setup (I set it myself) of jumbo frame 4k and on soft reboot of the drive it worked when connected to Airp[ort Extreme, but after hard reboot the disk is not visible anymore. I will recover the disk, but I need to understand if I have chance of using jumbo frames that tremendously improve performance with large files (e.g. try movies stored for AppleTV on network drive) when using Airport Extreme with its gigabit Ethernet... or that is just Gigabit Ethernet for product marketing purposes only.
I just need reliable answer by product specification that should be on paper at Apple, but it is not so I hope that one of guys here has access to some engineering team.
