Broadcom wl driver walkthrough please?

I'm just starting off using Arch Linux, after a long time in Ubuntu.  I've installed it several times, but I don't have easy access to an ethernet port in my home, I rely on wireless.  I have a Macbook Pro 4,1 with a broadcom chip, and my research says that it requires the broadcom wl driver, which is only available in the AUR.  Normally I wouldn't have a problem learning to use something like that, but in cli, plugged in to the hardly accessible ethernet port, and trying to read the standardized tutorial and remember it through a reboot and install, and having trouble after installing even using the ethernet port, I'm requesting help.  Is there a way to install Arch through FTP with the broadcom driver?  And, with this being my only computer, how can I download it from OS X or Vista and then install it from Arch? (I've already downloaded the file actually)
Sorry I'm rambling, but I need to be using something to learn it, I can't read directions and then do it a while later.  I also can't get online after an install through ethernet, which is strange because I use ftp to install.  After I get the wireless drivers, I can teach myself all I need to know, but not until then.
Last minute thought: Is it possible to install Arch in a VM, configure it correctly and do an ftp install by leeching my connection from my laptop, install the wireless drivers myself without even needing an answer to this post since I could have a browser open on the host, and then dump the VM onto my HD?  I know I can't with something from source, but Arch uses binaries, so I should be able to, right?

Veovis Muad'dib wrote:I can install with an internet connection through ethernet, but as soon as I'm done installing and I boot from the HD instead of the CD, I can't use ethernet anymore.
You need to configure your network interface. See the wiki for details.
Veovis Muad'dib wrote:As for the source, I already have the archive downloaded from the AUR, and it is on both my HFS+ partition and my NTFS partition, if that helps.
The tarball provided on the broadcom-wl AUR page provides the PKGBUILD and associated files that will enable you to build an Arch package for the driver. It does not include the driver's source - that is downloaded from broadcom during the build process. Alternatively, you can download it yourself and place it in the build directory. Again, full details are available in the wiki.
I strongly recommend that you set up your ethernet connection correctly and use it to install and configure the wl driver.

I should add that without the update the Broadcom wireless adapter works fine with standard WPA or WPA-PSK but just did not have the WPA2 and WPA2-PSK options, which is how I had my router set up. There are 4 of us living here that share the router and did not want to have to reconfigure for WPA because of this issue.

  • Error Msg - There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive

Okay, I have been using itunes w/the same ipod for quite a while. Recently my computer died so I just bought a new one. Before getting rid of the old one I logged onto windows and moved all my files to an external drive. I am now using this external drive for all my docs, music, etc. on the new computer and did a "move" of "my documents" (including "my music" contained therein). I installed itunes and my ipod using the software disks that came with my ipod. I inserted the ipod and it worked fine but it did make me associate the ipod with this new computer and had to reinstall all my music on my ipod. So far so good. Then when I went to play a purchased song itunes informed me that I had to upgrade to the most recent version of itunes to play the song. I then dowloaded the update and installed it. After installing the updated itunes, itunes then basically re-associated itself with my ORIGINAL profile (I'm not sure if profile is the correct word to use here) and once again deleted everything on my ipod and reinstalled all my songs. Now this is where I began having this problem. Now, everytime I run itunes (with or without my ipod connected) I get 12 of the above-mentioned error messages. The top of the box says "Windows - No Disk" and the main part of the box says "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive." I am given the choice of "Cancel" "Try Again" and "Continue." I hit cancel for a total of 12 times. I've tried with disks in both of my cd/dvd drives and get the same message. The funny thing is that I have about 12 or so card readers (scene by the computer as drives) and I'm thinking that maybe itunes is trying to access those drives or something, but I'm not sure. So, that's it in a nutshell. Any help by someone w/knowledge of this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This can also be caused in iTunes 7 by "dead tracks": songs that iTunes is expecting to find in a certain place but the song file isn't there.
I recently upgraded to version 7 and got this message every time I started iTunes. I used the iTunes COM SDK for Windows with JScript to find all the dead tracks in my library. Then I fixed them by either deleting them from the library or else correcting the library's idea of where the song file was. Once I did this the message went away.
Another way to look for dead tracks is to parse the iTunes library XML file and look for invalid file paths. I did this in Perl without too much trouble.
(I'm cross-posting this to several threads about the same problem.)

I've also been getting an image with the folder and question mark. I've tried everything on the apple support page but it doesn't seem to work either.

Well, I tried all of your suggestions and they didn't work -- no surprise because I was trying to backup to my external c.d. disk.  Duh!  The application for the home is in the mail.

  • Windows No Disk There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk......

Help! Just recently this message window has been appearing everytime I open up iTunes:
    Windows No Disk
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive.
iTunes was humming along nicely for over a year with no problems. All of a sudden this message keeps popping up. I can still use iTunes to its full capacity, but this annoying little window is beginning to push my blood pressure up.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
    Thanks

    Any thoughts?
all manner of thoughts. some might even be relevant to the matter at hand ...
okay, back in the days of new itunes 6.0.0.18 and 6.0.1.3 installs, we used to sometimes get reports of Windows asking for all sorts of disks when people tried to launch itunes after an upgrade. (sometimes it would be like your message, sometimes it would be asking for a specific disk with no apparent connection to itunes.) i never did manage to work out what precisely was going on with it. my best guess was that the installation scripts in the itunes installers (or QT 7.0.3 installers) were sometimes activating other installation routines for other programs. (i've seen your message show up before when i've tried installing other software on my PC from a disk.) whatever it was, it seemed to stop happening to people from itunes 6.0.2.23 (and QT 7.0.4) onwards.
i was wondering if we had an even weirder version of that going on with your message (only it started happening after an install of a different package). that's why i was checking up on the version number of your itunes before.
assuming for the moment that you do have an itunes 6.0.0.18 or 6.0.1.3 in there, we might as well try something that could fix the version of the message that you're getting. sometimes if people put a CD (an audio CD is fine) into the disk drive prior to launching their itunes, they wouldn't get that message. sometimes, they wouldn't get that message ever again even if in future launches they didn't have a CD in the drive.
if no joy with that (and you're currently at 6.0.0.18 or 6.0.1.3), we might try an upgrade to 6.0.4.2 (working on the principle that we haven't seen this often if at all since 6.0.2.23 came out, and 6.0.4.2 is more stable and/or more readily available than 6.0.2.23 or 6.0.3.5).
    keep us posted.
    love, b

It sounds like you downloaded the wrong application, namely Adobe Premiere Elements.
If you meant Adobe Photoshop Elements, you're in the wrong forum.  This is not the Elements forum.

  • No disc in the drive. Please install disc into drive E.

I have contacted your customer tech service via chat. They worked with me for three hours today and passed me off to the forums because they couldn't speak English and couldn't figure out the answer to my problem, even after taking control of my computer.
What my problem is, is that I just bought both photoshop and Premiere elements 13. Photoshop seems to work fine.
When I click on Premiere Elements 13 I get an error box that reads: There is no disc in the drive. Please insert disc into drive E.
Adobe chat support seemed to think it was enough that the program was installed correctly. They couldn't figure out how to get rid of the dang error box that disappears after 7 to 10 clicks anywhere on the box. This error box pops up when I enter the program or leave it. Its appearance every time I use the program or leave the program is annoying and unacceptable as we will be opening and closing the program constantly.
I have completely taken off my antivirus program so it wouldn't be a factor in this. I have reinstalled the program about ten times literally, including one tedious download from your website. The error message still continues to pop up.
I am running Windows 8 on a brand new computer. 16 GB RAM with 64 bit processor.
Hope you can help because I am very annoyed after six hours of this irritation.

Sorry I meant that I have a 64 bit operating system and the processor is Intel Core i7-337CPU @3.40GHz   3.90Ghz

New itunes is trying to wipe the ipod. But have many many playlists (many hours making) which I want to save. Any help would be appreciated.

If you want to just extract the playlists from your iPod, plug it in iTunes.  When it appears under devices, right->click on it and choose Export Playlists.  Save them to a location such as your desktop and them import them into your library once you have copied and imported all of your music back into it.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

i have 1TB hard drive i cant drag or sent to it although i can view it on my desk top do i need to format the hard drive ? please advise

If the format is NTFS, which it likely is, then follow Ralph's advice, but youmay also want to partition it with GUID partition table.
In Disk Utility, select the drive, then Partiiton tab.
Choose 1-partition from the popup menu.
Click the Options button (it is only enabled if you change the partition layout, above).
    Select GUID partition table.
Then, give the drive a Name and format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
If you wish to use the drive with Windows, use MSDOS or exFAT. MSDOS will limit files sizes to 2GB. Some think exFAT is flakey.

  • Scratch Disk Location ticked on F: Drive but still on C: Drive? (PLEASE HELP!!!)

When I first got Photoshop CS6 it loaded up very, very quickly. Then some time later it started loading up very slowly. I looked and whenever I started up photoshop it was taking GIGABYTES off of my C: Drive, not loading until it took up "x" amount of space. The C: drive only has about 9 GB left on it. I looked it up and people were saying it's the scratch disk that's the problem. I went to preferences and unticked C: and ticked F: (my larger drive) so that the scratch disk installed on the F: Drive. This is still not working, it stills takes the space off of my hard drive which pisses me off. Once in a blue moon it loads up in 5 secs without any space loss. But usually it takes about 5 mins to load and I'm up to about 1 GB remaining on the hard drive. Please dont ask me to get a bigger hard drive, I just wanna know how to fix this problem. I have 64x Windows 7 Ultimate. If you need other specs, let me know.

Make sure the old Photoshop temp files are removed from you user id temp space when you close down Photoshop.  If there are any still there delete then and start Photoshop  Then look in your user temp space make sure there are no Photoshop temp files. My scratch space is on c: and this is what I see get created in my user ID temp space when I start Photoshop.

  • How to install/compile broadcom-wl driver from the install cd?

    Hi there,
Problem: I cannot proceed the installation of Arch by lack of internet connection. I have a MBPr that has a Broadcom 4360 wireless card. After a little research I found that this requires the broadcom-wl driver. However, the wl driver is not on the install CD by default (at least, it didn't show up with "find / -iname '*wl*o'"). I figured that downloading and installing the driver from the AUR possibly solves the problem. I suppose I need to install the DKMS from https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/broadcom-wl-dkms/.
Since I'm new to Arch I have not the slightest idea how the AUR repository works and how to hack it all together with the install CD. I have the possibility to download stuff to a USB drive and mount it during the installation process.
Some help, refs, ideas are much appreciated.

Thanks. Tried it out in a virtual environment but some questions remain.
    - How do I get base-devel and all it's dependencies easily imported from a USB to Pacman?
    - How do I get Pacman's databases installed, without upgrading (as pacman -Syu does) and without internet? I need to install the linux-headers from the same version as the LiveCD kernel.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel 2.6.38 disables Broadcom Wireless driver

I installed Arch with kernel26 version 2.6.34 (with same kernel26-headers version), built the module for my broadcom (4312 - broadcom-wl driver), and eventually got wireless internet capability. However, after upgrading the kernel version to 2.6.38, while trying to load my driver I get the error "Module wl not found." Moving the wl.ko module file into the correct directory for the new kernel drivers, I get the message "invalid module format." So I tried rebuilding the module, but I now receive the error "error: implicit declaration of function 'init_MUTEX'" during the build process.
I have tried downgrading the kernel back to 2.6.34 and I can get wireless after rebuilding the module. But is there is any way right now for me to use the newest kernel26 version AND have my wireless driver working?

oh, sorry, I forgot to mention that you had to get it from AUR (thought it was obvious, didn't see you post count, you must be relatively new to arch, welcome)
*Always* use the AUR package if there's one available. It will work most of the time (some of them are outdated and will fail to build).
*Always* use pacman to install stuff. Personally, I've almost never installed from source. If something is not in AUR or the AUR package does not build, it's always better to write your own PKGBUILD to install stuff. This way you're sure that:
    1) you won't overwrite an existing system (or not system) file
    2) you can uninstall the package completely and cleanly with a pacman -R
Sticking to that principles, I haven't had to re-install my system for the past 2 years...

I am not sure what the R3271 is, but we have a driver for the R3272 (Spectrum Analyzer with GSM option). Normally API's do not change significantly and so it is very likely that you will be able to use this driver for your application. You can get it by going to www.ni.com/idnet.
