Broke a key on my W530 backlit keyboard

I broke a a key on my backlit W530 keyboard and was wondering if it's possible to just get a replacement for the key itself (probably not but worth a shot)
If I have to buy a new keyboard, which one do I get? I saw a ton of FRUs for keyboards but some of them I just couldn't tell the difference. It's a backlit US keyboard (chiclet style)
Thinkpad W530: i7-3720QM, K1000M, FHD Screen, 16 GB PC12800, 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD

Hi,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that one of the keys of your Lenovo ThinkPad W530 broke.
Remove the entire keyboard and try to reseat it which may fix the issue. Refer the hardware maintenance manual to see how it has to be done. If it didn’t help, probably you will have to order for a new keyboard.
Refer this document to find the FRU number. Choose the one which says B/L CHY US.
Hope this helps!
Best regards,
Mithun.

  • My backlit keyboard keys not working?

How come my backlit keyboard keys not working? When I try to use them I get a circle with a line running through it?

    cpickrell wrote:
Jax, the backlight is currently usinig a sensor to turn the light on and off for you. This uses the least amount of battery. If you want to test or control the lighting yourself, go to the Apple Menu, select System Preferences, click on the Keyboard icon. Here you can turn the automatic setting on and off. If it is off, you can use they keyboard keys to turn the keyboard lighting on and off.
    Exactly!

  • Upgrade W530 nonbacklit keyboard to backlit

    Hey folks,
I bought a slightly used W530 back this summer. I love this thing, it has all the power I need, an SSD+1TB HDD expansion, 1080p screen, etc. It checked all the boxes in what I wanted in a laptop. The only thing I forgot to check on was backlit keyboard... and of course, it doesn't have one. It's been fine without it, but with Christmas coming up, I may treat myself to the upgrade. I've seen the backlit keyboard for sale on ebay on other websites, and confirmed the swap is physically possible, but I haven't heard if there's anything you have to do in addition to physically installing it. For instance, right now FN+ space turns on the think light; with the backlit keyboard, I believe this activates the backlighting. Will the thinkpad automatically figure this out when the keyboard is installed or do I need to update the BIOS or something?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

My w530 came with a non-backlit keyboard. i bought one from ebay, the swap took three minutes, and no updates or other actions are rquired. Fn+space works as before, it cycles between backlight (two levels), thinklight and off.

  • Hardware Request: Corded backlit keyboard with black keys

When I bought my MBP I thought it's backlit keyboard was just some silly feature.
Well ... now I can't live without it. Thanks Apple.
The problem now is that I use my MBP for work plugged into a big monitor , mouse and keyboard. I have a very good keyboard from logitech (MX3000), and now I hate this lightless *******.
What I'm asking is something you could name Keyboard Pro, with numerical keypad, additional USB ports (like the current one), black keys (white ones get dirty very easy) and that magical light beneath it. Put some macro recording keys and I'll go crazy.
Hurry up, or I might burn $130 in that Razer Black Widow Ultimate.

  • Remapping Backlit Keyboard Keys F9 & F10

I love my macbookpro, but I want my Expose back. With the introduction of the backlit keyboard functions on the F9 and F10 keys I now have to press
fn + F9 (Expose All Windows)
fn + F10 (Expose Application Windows)
in order operate my Expose functions. I know I could either (A) get used to it, or (B) set the Expose keys to something else like "tilde". what I'd like is this:
    F9 => Expose All Windows
    F10 => Expose Application Windows
    fn + F9 => Dim Backlit Keyboard
    fn + F10 => Brighten Backlit Keyboard
I use the dim and brighten features a lot less than Expose, thus the desire to change things. Is this even possible?

Just wanted to clarify. You can quickly change the settings for they way the "F Keys" are used.
Got to System Settings-->Keyboard & Mouse.
Make sure the keyboard sub-tab is selected and check:
"Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features
When this option is selected, press the Fn key to use the F1-F12 keys to control hardware features."
The only downside is then you have to use the function key to change the volume. All and all, it's still a better choice for me.
    good luck

I have bought a w530 in the US and wish to replace the keyboard with a proper UK one. The original US one was not backlit - can I just replace with a UK backlit one? Is the backlighting built into the keyboard?
Does it matter which I buy of these two? :-

  • Dim Backlit Keyboard HP Pavilion DV6t-7000

The backlit keyboard went dim after having it on for a few hours while working on some projects. I can only see the light if I look underneath the keys.  I have had the lights on for long times before it when dim. I have looked on these forums for any information happening before and found one that mention a proximity sensor that may need to be ajusted, but I looked on my computer and does not have that bit of software.
So I would like to find out is there any way to fix this or would I end up needing to replace the keyboard.
    Thanks.

    Hi Zannh,
    Try the following.
Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
    Any change?

    DP-K

  • Backlit Keyboard has stopped working on Satellite P50-A-12Z

I bought my Satellite P50-A-12Z over a year ago, and since few weeks the backlit keyboard has stopped working.
I used to hold FN+W to turn on/off the light keyboard, but now it doesn't work anymore and I have the message "chronometer" on the top right of the screen as you can see on this screenshot:
    https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1050x591q90/903/Estd0f.png
When I go to Desktop Assist > Tools & Utilities > Function Key , keyboard backlight is set to OFF but can't set it to ON:

    Please help me

    Hi
I don't know if this will help but try please following: perform complete shutdown - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB2B03EY0002R01.htm
Start notebook again and press F12. There you should find option to enter BIOS settings. Enter BIOS settings and try to enable keyboard backlight there.
Please test it and send some feedback.

  • Reverse question Can the W530 chiclet keyboard be installed in a W520

    Hello,
I had the opportunity to try out the T530 / W530 chiclet keyboard and really liked it
I have bit of a reverse question
Can a new chiclet type keyboard be installed in a W520 and would the bios have to be changed
    for key mapping etc..
Thanks in advance for your help

It won't fit due to a slightly different surrounding bezel.  And even if it did fit (or you replaced the bezel which would allow it to fit), then BIOS wouldn't support it anyway - key mapping problems.

  • Can the keyboard be replaced with a backlit keyboard?

I have a late 2010 MacBook Air with a plain keyboard.  Is it possible to have it replaced with a backlit keyboard?

The logicboard on the 2010 MacBook Airs do not have the requisite electical connectors and controls for the support of the keyboard of the 2011 style. As well, the keyboard/keys itself are different and would not mate with the case.

  • Error with backlit keyboard

    Hi guys.
I recently have some problems with my Macbook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
The keyboard light is turned off and I can't adjust the light brightness of this because F5 & F6 doesn't work.
I go to System Preferences> Keyboard and I can't find any option about illuminated keyboard, just disappeared of my mac.
I recently installed Lab Trick to see if I can manually use the light settings on the keyboard, but it shows me the following error "Your Macintosh does not seem to have any available backlit keyboard."
I tried resetting SMC, PRAM. But the problem continues.
I haven't opened the mac yet.
There will be some sensor cable disconnected?
Will be necessary to carry warranty?

    Hi,
I have the same Macbook Pro as you, and here is a picture of my Keyboard settings.
I don't know why the bottom part of yours is blank. Maybe you can try this. Check the box for Use all F1, F2, etc. and then use the fn key on your keyboard together with F6 to see if it will bring up the brightness.
Has your System Prefs Keyboard settings always been like this?

  • MBA 11" backlit keyboard no longer lighting automatically

The backlit keyboard on my MBA 11" is no longer responding to the "automatically illuminate keyboard in low light" option in System Preferences. I can control the backlights manually with F5 and F6, but they don't come on automatically in the dark (easily testing by covering the camera).
Originally, the F keys would even be completely inactive, with a line appearing across the on-screen brightness display to say the control was on automatic, but that doesn't happen any more.
I have reset the SMC, but that has changed nothing. The automatic brightness control on the display works fine.

I am replying to my own post, as I don't see a way to edit it.
While researching this issue further, I found a "work-around" from a user called Golden Shoes - where the creation of a .css file is decribed in expert, easy to follow detail.  This worked perfectly, and I have since infected my other toys with this fix for Safari zoom levels...
