Broke my Photo Library

Like other IPhoto users I've seen posting here, I found the "don't tamper with the library" prompt too late, after I mistakenly tried to trash photos in the Photo Library. Now I can't get the slideshow to work--the screen goes to black, nothing happens, and then the library screen reappears.
I am running 4.0.3. I tried to rebuild the library by launching the application with shift-option-Apple pressed. It starts to rebuild it and indicates it is repairing photos, but then the application quits and I get the "would you like to submit a bug report" prompt. And the problem persists.
I guess I must have damaged photos in the Library, because if I select certain recent additions, I can get slideshow to display those. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

" just copied my folders over to the external HD. It worked fine"
copying to an external HD does not mean that iPhoto will now operate from the copied library on the external HD. You have to point iPhoto to it!!! Did you do that? Because iPhoto could have very well operated the "old" library on your internal HD, and then if you did anything to the library in the internal HD, and iPhoto still operates it, it's no wonder that's all messed up.
You also say that "it's slow as mud", now assuming you have correctly pointed iPhoto to the external library on the external HD, what's the speed of teh HD? is it a 5400rpm? Most internal HD are 7200rpm. That couls vhave something to do with it (maybe).
"Do I trash the folders"
Folders???? are you talking about the iPhoto library? and in which location? internal or external HD???
" then reload the program Iphoto 5 from my system disk?"
If you are already running iP5 there's no need to re-install it!
"I was able to move them all over to the external HD"
you moved the slide shows???? are you talking about Quicktime slide show? or modules coming from inside the iPhoto library???
"if I can backup the library on DVD or external HD and then dump all the folderS and reload"
what do you mean but dump all the folderS (S is emphasized here.... meaning more that one folder) why so many folders? Which folders are you talking about? IPhoto library is only one folder. (And yes inside there are many other folders.) but if you dump the Iphot library it is only one folder!!!! BTW never dump anything before you back it up.
To re-load it.... I'm not even sure that the library is not damaged by some of the Ventured trips you made inside the library.... and if it is damaged, copying a damaged library, will only transfer the damage back and forth!
if you wanted to talk live, and don't mind calling California, (cell phone have cheap rates- sometimes free accross country) I'd be willing to give you a hand on the phone, because there's something that is lost into the typing and terminology you use and what i perceive your are trying to say might be 2 different things, as you can see by my many questions above.
If you are up for a call, let me know , I will let you know what is my e-mail and will give you my phone # and best tie to call! You are not the first one that I have helped like that.... the ball is in your court!

  • IOS 4 Broke Picture Clarity in Photo Library

Since I installed IOS 4 this morning all my photos in the photo library are only clear as thumbnails but when I click on a picture to view it they are grainy and out of focus, it no longer adjusts itself to bring the picture into focus normally or zoomed in. The same pictures work perfectly fine and look great/normal inside my Photo Vault app, it is just a problem with the Photo Library zooming/focusing photos within there.

Same problem here. I installed the update at work even though I sync with my home PC, so I can't test resyncing photos at the moment. Have you tried disabling photo sync to remove them all and then syncing them all back? Did that work? If not I'm going to be pretty ticked until an update comes out because my I show my photos to a lot of other people, not to mention my wallpaper now looks like crap.

  • I am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Can't open my photo library after upgrading to iPhoto 11.  is it possible to load iPhoto 9.0.1 after loading 11?  have followed all other instructions but it still won't let me open iPhoto.

can't open my photo library after upgrading to iphoto 11.  Is it possible to download iphoto 9.0.1 after installing '11.  Have followed all the other instructions and am in a loop which doesn't allow me to access iphoto or my photos.

when iphoto wouldnt open we read the trouble shooting info and it said that we may have needed to download 9.0.1 if we had an older version.  We obviously didn't download it before the upgrade and wondered if it would cause problems or indeed solve the problem if we downloaded it now!
When we try to open iphoto is says:
To open your library with this version of iphoto it first needs to be prepared
To prepare the library use the iphoto library upgrader available from Apple.
We have downloaded this twice now and it still sends us this message when we try to open iphoto.

  • Can I share an iCloud photo library between family members?

I am searching for a good photo and video backup solution for my entire family. Previously I was backing up photos to a Windows Home Server that did a weekly backup to Amazon's cloud storage; however, the system disk on the home server blew up, leaving me with the choice to rebuild the server or alternatively look for a more seamless, lightweight solution. I have large quantity of photos and video on a home server data drive, as well as a large number of photos that have been recently scanned to my MacBook pro. We have almost completely transitioned to Apple products and use Time Machine for Macbook backups, so that function of the Home Server is no longer useful.
I like the concept of Apple's iCloud Photo Library; however, I need a solution that allows photos from at least my wife's and my devices to be seamlessly backed up to the library. We use different iCloud IDs. The ideal use case would be that photos taken on any of our devices (across a set of iCloud IDs) would be shared within a single library.
Family Sharing allows you to share a number of things across family members, but currently the photo library doesn't appear to be one of them.
Any pointers on how to proceed? Will the OS X Photo app and the move to bring iCloud library to the Mac make any difference? Any alternative solutions?

Someone else can probably answer the family sharing question better than I can, but I wanted to respond with an alternate suggestion. I didn't find the features I wanted in family sharing, so I didn't give it much of a chance. It did seem like you'd have a separate album for each family member.
I just recently started using Flickr and it's great. I looked into it a few years ago and there were limitations on how many MB's you could upload per day and I don't remember being impressed by the amount of free storage. Now Flickr gives you 1000 GB for free and stores the image in the original quality and size. If you download the Flickr app on your phone, you can set it to automatically upload all of the new pictures on your iphone, ipad, etc. If you and a family member share a Flickr account, you can both auto sync your camera rolls into the same Flickr account.
Personally, I'm using Flickr as a way to automatically back up photos for free. I quickly ran out of free icloud storage and I haven't wanted to pay for more.In Flickr, the auto uploads from your phone are set to private by default, but you could use flickr to share albums with friends who don't own any apple products... unlike icloud photo sharing, that only allows your friends with an apple device to view shared albums.

  • How does a family share an iCloud Photo Library?

I have a wife and two kids, all with iDevices. We each have our own Apple ID, and we have a fifth Apple ID for the family. I'd like to have all four devices see and contribute to one iCloud Photo Library, preferably using that fifth Apple ID. Can I do this?
As a note, I do this with the iTunes Store, happily. Apple allows you to set the iTunes Apple ID as a different one than the Apple ID used for everything else. I don't see that functionality with the iCloud Photo Library.
We could, perhaps, cobble together some solution using sharing to the family library and whatnot, I guess. That may be the only way, but it seems clunky. I will figure it out if I have to.
    Thanks!
    Danny.

I do want my daughter to be able to download apps or updates to existing apps even when she is not with me, but that doesn't seem possible without sharing passwords.
That is indeed not possible. She'll either need to re-acquire all those apps through her own iTunes Store account, you'll have to give her the password to your account, or you'll have to do all the updating for her.
    Regards.

  • How to share the Photos library on iCloud Drive with other family members?

I have uploaded our family photo-library to iCloud drive (136GB+). It works great!
But how can my wife (with her own iCloud-account, but within the family) see and use our library?

Tnx for the reply, though I already feared this was the answer.
Family sharing works well for keeping contact lists separated and we do not need to see all the crap the other half shoots with their iPhone.
But as family-members, we DO want to use our communal photo-library.
It would be great if you could share your entire library with family-members or at least select which albums to share with who.
Also it is silly that you can share a photo only to one other iCloud-album. If I shoot a nice pic of the kids I would want to share it with my wife AND with others.
The same would work for contacts. The family-head should be able to assign which contacts are shared and which are separate.
I hope Apple will update the family-possibilities so that this is fixed.

  • HT1229 How can you transfer the  photo library from  an iphone to a mac.

I have a photo library on my iphone which was synced to the iphone from my pc.  Now I have a mac laptop and I cannot figure out how to get the photo library onto my mac from the phone.  The photo stream has transferred over but none of my other albums.

If the photos are in your Camera Roll on the iPhone connect the iPhone to your Mac, launch iPhoto and import directly into your library on the Mac.

  • The difference between Camera Roll and Photo Library

I am a bit confused.  I have, on my iPhone, pictures in 3 places: Camera Roll, Photo Library, and Photo Stream.  I am not sure why iPhone make these distinctions but I want them all to end up in one place: my iMac central photo library.
I  only have 3 devices, an iPhone an iPad and a desktop iMac.  I manually sync my photos to my computer from my iPhone, and do not really worry that all photos get to all devices immediately.  My question is this: How do I make sure ALL the photos from my iPhohe end up in my 'main' photo library on my iMac? Without causing duplicates.   It seems like some of the iPhone photo storage locations sync and some do not; occasionally I get a ton of duplicates.  It is confusing and I was hoping someone could help me streamline it. I know the iCloud is trying to make things easier, but sometimes it does not seem that way
    Thanks!

  • How do i delete my photo library from my iphone 4?

My computer downloaded my entire photo library to my iPhone 4s & I'm almost out of storage space.  As far as I can tell, there is no way to delete the photo library from the phone itself; I have tried.
I have gone into iTunes library to delete it from there, but I don't have a "photo" option.  I clicked on all of the other choices on the tab in the upper left-hand corner: Music, Movies, TV Shows, Books, Apps, & Tones.  None of these options have anything related to photos or photo libraries.
I have cleared my "My Pictures" folder on my PC and re-synched the phone; that didn't work either.  I've gone through everything under the "Settings" tab on the phone itself, but to no avail.
I'm almost to the point where I just want to take my phone to the wireless provider and have them wipe everything out and reset the phone back to its original settings, but I'm thinking there's GOT to be an easier way to solve this problem.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks in advance...

As far as I can tell, there is no way to delete the photo library from the phone itself; I have tried.
Yes there is and if you are unable to via the iTunes sync process, there is a problem.
I have gone into iTunes library to delete it from there, but I don't have a "photo" option.
Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync/transfer process are not stored in your iTunes library. iTunes serves as the transfer conduit only between the location on your computer's hard drive where the selected photos are stored and your iPhone.
This is selected under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. If all photos that were transferred from your computer to your iPhone are not removed from the iPhone after deselecting Sync Photos under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by a sync, try creating a new folder on your computer's hard drive that will remain empty. Select this empty folder under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes instead of your My Pictures folder followed by a sync.
I'm almost to the point where I just want to take my phone to the wireless provider and have them wipe everything out and reset the phone back to its original settings,
You don't need to take the iPhone anywhere to do this ends up being needed. You can erase all data and settings direct on the iPhone at Settings > General > Reset which will erase everything but the iOS version installed and the included apps, or you can restore the iPhone with iTunes on your computer as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

  • Importing a photo folder just with references creates a photo library 2/3 of its size. crazy!

after ignoring iphoto for many reasons over the last years i thought i give it a try with the new photo app.
i imported a 70gb photo folder - turning OFF to copy it into the library first, just refering to them - and now it ate up all my space by creating a 41gb (!!!) photo library just with references alone. so now i have a 70gb folder plus an index file that is 41gb big. i am beyond baffled.
am i doing something wrong here or are they crazy?
they cannot possibly think this is a smart way to store photos with the small internal hard drives they give us nowadays can they?

it gets even worse. "photos" has created empty subfolders of almost every photo in my original photo folder.
    thank you apple. good job.

  • Removing photos/images from Photo Library (not camera roll) on the 3g iphon

    Okay,
So i have removed all photos from camera roll one by one......... Now for the photo library, i want remove all pics from that, some are photos i took, some are shots i saved off facebook etcc.... while on the iphone safari browser.
but i have no idea what to do as there is no delete option on the phone for that folder....there is for camera roll, why they didnt have that function in photo library is beyond me...............
So basically could anyone tell me how to solve this problem, im desperate at this stage.
Im using a pc by the way, but dont hate on me for that

really the photos in photo library are only ones that were sent from my laptop to iphone during sync with itunes???
    Correct.
If i contect my fone to itunes and just untick the synch folders box in photo tab should it remove all those pictures?????
    Correct.

  • How do I delete a photo library from my iPhone

I have 2 phot libraries that are exactly the same. I want to delete one of them. I resynced but there still 2. Photo Library and iPod Photo Cache. I am only syncing iPod Photo Cache. I resynced my iPad and the extra (duplicate) went away. Not true with my iPhone. Any ideas?

LOL.. I think the question just morphed again.
    Natalie
You can't sync your albums from an iPhone to iTunes/computer - the sync is always the other way.
If you need to move album photos from an iPhone to a computer then you need to look at some apps to do that.
An example might be Phototransfer - there will be others through a Google search
    Cheers
