"Broken" AAA between ASA 5505 and MS-AD

I have setup an AAA connection from my ASA5505 to my MS-AD domain controller for VPNs (SSL and client). It was working, however, last week the connection between the two failed and I cannot get it back up again.
I've checked password, usernames, object locations etc. but to no avail. When I do an auth test, this is the debug ldap 225 output:
[722] Session Start
[722] New request Session, context 0xd4e225c8, reqType = 1
[722] Fiber started
[722] Creating LDAP context with uri=ldap://w.x.y.z:389
[722] Connect to LDAP server: ldap://w.x.y.z:389, status = Successful
[722] supportedLDAPVersion: value = 3
[722] supportedLDAPVersion: value = 2
[722] Binding as administrator
[722] Performing Simple authentication for FirewallTest to w.x.y.z
[722] Simple authentication for FirewallTest returned code (49) Invalid credentials
[722] Failed to bind as administrator returned code (-1) Can't contact LDAP server
[722] Fiber exit Tx=253 bytes Rx=583 bytes, status=-2
[722] Session End
I have tried the age-old "remove and re-add" fix, but this has not worked.
Any thoughts?

Have you checked the the user account used for binding to the LDAP server (AD) has not change it's privileges, I remember that after applying a patch to an AD server most of the Admin accounts were changed to local admin rather than domain admin accounts.
Also, try reseting the password for this account and see if you have the login-dn correct, get the "dsquery user -name " and compare it to your ASA.

  • Site to Site VPN between ASA 5505 and Cisco 800 router

    Evening all,
Hoping that someboy can see the error of my ways.  It seems very like the problem that i read here: https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2016300
We have a cisco 800 in a remote site which we wanted to use for a site to site vpn.  Went through the steps on the ASA 5505 and the 800 and have got to the stage were the tunnel is up and connected.  Getting traffic through it is another matter.  Remote network is 172.20.224.0/20 and the server network behind the ASA is 192.168.168.0/24. The tunnel does intiate when you send traffic from 172 ......to 192.......  Both the ASA and 800 report the tunnel is up.  If i look at the stats using ccp on the 800 i can see the encapsulation packets graph shooting up but nothing cominbg back.  I did packet captures on the 5505 and could not see anything coming from the tunnel so i dont belive its making it to the ASA.  Here is the config from the 800:

Cisco Configuration Professional (Cisco CP) is installed on this device
and it provides the default username "cisco" for  one-time use. If you have
already used the username "cisco" to login to the router and your IOS image
supports the "one-time" user option, then this username has already expired.
You will not be able to login to the router with this username after you exit
    this session.
It is strongly suggested that you create a new username with a privilege level
of 15 using the following command.
    username <myuser> privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
Replace <myuser> and <mypassword> with the username and password you
    want to use.

Cisco Configuration Professional (Cisco CP) is installed on this device.
This feature requires the one-time use of the username "cisco" with the
password "cisco". These default credentials have a privilege level of 15.
YOU MUST USE CISCO CP or the CISCO IOS CLI TO CHANGE THESE
    PUBLICLY-KNOWN CREDENTIALS
Here are the Cisco IOS commands.
    username <myuser>  privilege 15 secret 0 <mypassword>
    no username cisco
Replace <myuser> and <mypassword> with the username and password you want
    to use.
IF YOU DO NOT CHANGE THE PUBLICLY-KNOWN CREDENTIALS, YOU WILL
NOT BE ABLE TO LOG INTO THE DEVICE AGAIN AFTER YOU HAVE LOGGED OFF.
For more information about Cisco CP please follow the instructions in the
QUICK START GUIDE for your router or go to http://www.cisco.com/go/ciscocp

  • 10Mb Metro link between ASA 5505 and ASA 5510

    Dear all,
I have encountered one difficult problem, I wished all expert could give my - newie some tips,
    Environment
    One ASA 5505 - ASA 7.2(1) and ASDM 5.2(1)
    One ASA 5510 - ASA 7.2 (1) and ASDM 5.2(1)
These two firewall make site-to-site VPN connection
two ASA has three interface - the one is inside (security level is 100), the another is outside (security level is 0), the finally interface is metro (security level is also 100)
***** I didn't know why around 3 days to one week , these two ASA would hang and make all internal PC cannot access to internet, it need to uplug and replug power, and then the ASA resumed. I didn't know how to shooting this problem, is ASA version is old (7.2(1)), or other problem,
***** I didn't know how to see the log, in the matter of fact, I have already set up a syslog in the one windows server, but I see log, I found no any error log for ASA error or hang message, please everyone.

To see the error logs on ASA; telnet to the device and after authentication give command "show log". This will display a long list of log messages. Point out to the log messages that have been logged at the time when the connection went down. Without the error message or syslog message it would not be possible to figure out the problem. Following link may help you to configure ASA for syslog

  • Difference between ASA 5505 and C876

    Hello Everybody,
I have those 2 device at disposal. It is required to set up a site-to-site VPN.
Is the only difference that the ASA has more functions as the 876? I searched for a while now but in the supportinformation from the cisco website I couldn't find much information about my topic.
    With best Regards
    Thomas

    Thomas
There are significant differences between an ASA5505 and a C876. The ASA was designed and built as a firewall and VPN concentrator while the C876 was designed and built as a router. There are many things for which the ASA is best (especially in terms of stateful inspection of traffic) and many things for which the C876 is best (especially in terms of routing and switching).
For the purpose of the site to site VPN either the ASA or the C876 should do fine. If your background is in security type things you may prefer to use the ASA while if your background is more in routing and switching then you may perfer to use the C876.
    HTH
    Rick

  • How to Support IDS in ASA 5505 and 5520?

    Dear All;
we have the following HW configuration for the ASA 5505 and ASA 5520, We need to add the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) functionality to both ASA. My question is: what is/are the  module(s) required to support this function, and what is the deference between IPS and IDS, does the the same Module do the both functionality?

Ok, I was not quite correct in my first post.
Those modules - only modules available for corresponding ASA models.
They all may act as IPS (inline mode) or IDS (promiscuous mode), depending on how you configure your policies.
When it acts like IPS, ASA directs all traffic through the module, so all the traffic is inspected and can be dropped inline if some signature fires.
When it acts as an IDS, ASA just copies traffic to the module for inspection, but actual traffic flow is not affected by the module, as it's not inline in this case.
Plus, those modules may be comdination of both modes. I.e. some traffic might be inspected inline, when some other (more sensitive) traffic can be inspected in promiscuous mode.

  • Unable to establish site to site vpn between asa 5505 an 5510

We are now plan to form a site to site IPSec VPN tunnel between ASA 5505 (ASA Version 8.4) and ASA 5510 (ASA Version 8.0) but failure, would you please teach me how to establish it? Any reference guide?

  • Cisco ASA 5505 and DHCP Client Problems

Hi, i have a problem. I've connected my ASA appliance to an ADSL modem, and i dont get an DHCP address on the outside interface (e0/0). I use the asa-722-19.bin firmware.
I turned on the debugging for the DHCP client and could see that the ASA device was sending out broadcasts but a reply never came. Instead I connected the device to my internal network where the ASA got an address instantly.
I read somewhere that if I was to use ?ip address dhcp client-id fastethernet 0″, then I got an address from the ISP.
I tried looking for a similar command on the ASA5505 but I couldn?t find anything. I did however find a page on the Cisco site confirming my suspicions. It said some ISP?s require the client-id field of the DHCPDISCOVER request to be filled.
I've also read that this issue has beed fixed since a few weeks, now they have released version 7.2(2).22 where you can define ?dhcp-client client-id interface outside? in global configuration mode. Im running 7.2(2).19 and i cannot find any command like that in my appaiance. How do i fix my problem ? Or how do i get about recieving the 7.2(2).22 firmware update.
    Regards !
    Leif

Hi again! I thought I should share the solution that worked for me. I use software version 7.2(2) on this device. ASDM 5.2(2). In ASDM open configuration / Interfaces. Click in outside (my case 0/0) and press Edit. Then open the tab Advanced and set the correct Active Mac address. Fore some reason its empty by default and the ISP/modem don't like that. You will find the correct MAC address under the help menu / "About ASA". Im sure there is some another way to do this but this is a simple "how-to" that works with Swedens biggest ISP and their standard DSL modem.
When I used a Linksys DSL modem in bridge mode without the MAC address set I got an inside IP adress (192.168.x.x) from the modem to the ASA. After setting the MAC address I just had to do a renew and got the outside address right away. /Bjorn
(future users searchwords: no ip from isp, ASA 5505 and cable modem).

If you do a show crypto map in the router you will see the VPN traffic to be "any to any".
This is due a known bug on Cisco routers. The router does not support object-groups network for the VPN traffic. Use a regular ACL instead.

  • Cisco ASA 5505 and comodo SSL certificate

    Hey All,
I am having an issue with setting up the SSL certificate piece of the Cisco AnyConnect VPN. I purchased the certificate and installed it via the ASDM under Configuration > Remote Access VPN > Certificate Management > Identity Certificates. I also placed the CA 2 piece under the CA Certificates. I have http redirect to https and under my browser it is green.
Once the AnyConnect client installs and automatically connects i get no errors or anything. The minute I disconnect and try to reconnect again, I get the "Untrusted VPN Server Certificate!" which isn't true because the connection information is https://vpn.mydomain.com and the SSL Cert is setup as vpn.mydomain.com.
On that note it lists the IP address instead of the vpn.mydomain.com as the untrusted piece of this. Now obviously I don't have the IP address as part of the SSL cert, just the web address. On the web side I have an A record setup to go from vpn.mydomain.com to the IP address of the Cisco ASA.
What am I missing here? I can post config if anyone needs it.
(My Version of ASA Software is 9.0 (2) and ASDM Version 7.1 (2))

It's AnyConnect version 3.0. I don't know about the EKU piece. I didn't know that was required. I will attach my config.

  • Cisco ASA 5505 and 2Wire

    Hi all,
I need some help from someone who has experience with configuring VPN on ASA over 2Wire router setup as dmzplus.
    Topology:
    ASA 5505 ---- 2Wire (dmzplus) -------------- ( cloud ) -------------- 2Wire (dmzplus) ---- ASA 5505
BT is the ISP on both ends. Static IPs are currently forwarded to the firewalls on both ends (outside interface is DHCP client).
All other services are working as expected (static NAT for few ports and so on).
I have found on some other forums the solution is to setup router in full bridge mode and then configure PPPoE on ASA, but I am trying to avoid this (for few other reasons).
The weird thing is when I am trying to initiate tunnel traffic from site A I can see IKE peer responder from site B, but not the opposite.
IKE state is MM_WAIT_MSG2 so it’s not passing the phase one. What I also notice in the arp table despite only one IP is assigned per site, the BT router has IP one less than the public one.
    So my questions are:
    1.       Do I missing something in the config?
    2.       Is it possible to setup VPN on ASA over dmzplus?
    3.       Does the BT PPPoA service will become PPPoE after changing 2Wire to bridge mode?
    4.       Is there any different workaround or alternative solution?
CONFIG (crypto policies and all different settings are mirrored on the other end so it doesn’t make sense to post both):

    Hi all,
    The latest update
I've finally managed to get the VPN to work! As soon as I've reconfigure the router and the firewall it took 1 second to establish the tunnel. So the answer for the most important question number 2. Is it possible to setup VPN on ASA over dmzplus? is no. I think the issue is related to routing which doesn't look normal with the dmzplus (can't properly  traceroute to IPs etc)
    So my solution was :
    - changed 2Wire settings (Bridged LLC, ATM PVC disabled, Connection type: direct IP, save and uncheck Routing mode)
    - changed ASA external interface settings to pppoe with automatic routing and IP

  • Communication problem between ASA 5510 and Cisco 3750, L2 Decode drops

Having problem with communication between ASA 5510 an Cisco Catalyst 3750.
Here is the Cisco switch port facing the ASA 5510 configuration:
    interface FastEthernet2/0/6
    description Trunk to ASA 5510
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk native vlan 50
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 131,500
    switchport mode trunk
    switchport nonegotiate
And here is the ASA 5510 port configuration:
    interface Ethernet0/3
    speed 100
    no nameif
    no security-level
    no ip address
    interface Ethernet0/3.500
    vlan 500
    nameif outside
    security-level 0
    ip address X.X.X.69 255.255.255.0
There is a default route on ASA to X.X.X.1.
When I try to ping from ASA X.X.X.1 i get:
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 31.24.36.1, timeout is 2 seconds:
Also in the output of show interface eth 0/3 on the ASA i can see that the L2 Decode drop counter increases.
I have also changed the ports on the Switch and ASA but the same error stays.
    Any thoughts?

I don't see anything wrong with your trunk configuration; I have a similar one working between an ASA 5520 and a Catalyst 3750G.
Maybe you should adjust the "speed 100"?  In my experience, partial autoconfiguration results in duplex mis-matches, which results in dropped packets.
I'd try removing the "speed 100" and letting the ASA port autonegotiate with the switch.  Alternatively, have both sides set
       speed 100
       duplex full
    and see if things improve.

  • Cisco ASA 5505 and PAT

So I have a weird problem that I'm hoping someone has a point in the right direction I can follow... At home I have a Cisco ASA 5505 - not very complex network some BCP configs and it's providing a NAT (PAT). I have a static IP and using a few RFC 1918 segments - like I said nothing earth shattering. I have a linksys E1200 802.11N WPA2 PSK - again pretty standard. I connect laptops, iPads, iPhones, Kindles, Androids no problem. Until recently my 60" Vizio had no issues using the network (wired or wireless). Now network is failing on the TV. I see it get to the FW and I can ping trace etc... to the TV. The FW logs show resets (log is below).
Now here is the real interesting part - if I turn the tether feature on my iPhone on and connect the TV to it - it works - what's even more interesting is if I then go back to the home network it all works again no problem until I reboot the TV... HELP!

    Hello ras,
As you mentioned the TV is sending a reset packet to the remote address. I will recommend you to create a capture of the traffic and review the traffic at the packet level to see a posible reason for the drop.
Here is how. Then you can download it to pcap format and uploaded to the forum for further analysis.

  • Problem with VPN by ASA 5505 and PIX 501

    Hi
I have this scenario: Firewall ASA 5505, Firewall Pix 501 (with CatOS 6.3(5) ).
I have configured this appliance for Easy VPN (server is ASA) and PIX, and remote Access with Cisco client vpn (for internal lan ASA).
When i configure the ASA i have this problem, when i configure nat for easy vpn.
    This is my nat configuration:
    nat (inside) 0 access-list 100
    nat (inside) 1 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
    nat (inside) 1 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
    nat (inside) 0 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 outside
    when i put this command:
    nat (inside) 0 access-list no-nat
this command is necessary for configuration of easy vpn, but the previous nat:
    nat (inside) 0 access-list 100
is replace with the latest command.

To identify addresses on one interface that are translated to mapped addresses on another interface, use the nat command in global configuration mode. This command configures dynamic NAT or PAT, where an address is translated to one of a pool of mapped addresses. To remove the nat command, use the no form of this command.
    For regular dynamic NAT:
nat (real_ifc) nat_id real_ip [mask [dns] [outside] [udp udp_max_conns] [norandomseq]]
no nat (real_ifc) nat_id real_ip [mask [dns] [outside] [udp udp_max_conns] [norandomseq]]
For policy dynamic NAT and NAT exemption:
    nat (real_ifc) nat_id access-list access_list_name [dns] [outside] [udp udp_max_conns] [norandomseq]
    no nat (real_ifc) nat_id access-list access_list_name [dns] [outside] [udp udp_max_conns] [norandomseq]
