Broken airport card and i can't dish out £220 to fix it

Hi, my airport card has just broken, the range has been halved so at the moment i have to hug my wireless box to get signal. As the title says i cant afford the repair, its an old computer out of warrenty and im a student without surplus cash. I was wondering does anyone know any cheaper ways off fixing this? wireless USB sticks that are compatible with older macbooks?
Many thanks

The Asus WL-167g wireless USB adapter works with my old iBook as well as my new MacBook. I tried it just to be sure, although of course I use the Airport card on the MacBook. If you use it, remember to turn off Airport.
The Asus WL-167g costs $17 at New Egg. You can download the Mac driver here:

  • One day it just stopped focusing and the pictures are blurry.  If I switch it to the front camera it works well and looks like it should but when I turn it back it goes back to being out of focus and I can't figure out how to fix it?

i installed ios 7.after  that my primary cam, one day it just stopped focusing and the pictures are blurry.  If I switch it to the front camera it works well and looks like it should but when I turn it back it goes back to being out of focus and I can't figure out how to fix it?

This advice will sound like a joke or prank, but believe me it worked on my iPhone 5 and my daughter's.  The lens mechanism got stock on each of our iPhones.  We found a post on these message boards that said to hold the iPhone about 6 inches above a table or counter top and drop it so that it lands flat on it's back.  Now try the camera ...Fixed!  It has been more than six months now and neither of our iPhones have ever experienced the problem again.

  • Broken airport card and hard drive on MacBook Pro and can't go to recovery with LAN.

    Hi.
My MacBook Pro 13" (early-2011)'s hard drive has broken, and I bought a Kingston 120GB SSDNow instead.
Earlier, the airport card and cable has been broken too.
Are there other ways I can use LAN to recover my mac? It wants me to use wifi, but the airport card is broken...
If so, why does it only want to use Wifi instead of LAN?
LAN is like the extra parachute just in case, or the extra octopus regulator in scuba diving.

Is your model on the list? Did you ever upgrade its firmware? If not, then all you can do is start by booting from your Snow Leopard DVD and installing Snow Leopard on your SSD. Be sure to first partition and format the SSD for use with OS X. Once you install Snow Leopard you can download and install the firmware update for future needs.

  • Since upgrading to mavericks, my email autofill is incorrect and I can't figure out how to fix it.

Since upgrading to mavericks, my email autofill in Safari is incorrect and I can't figure out how to change it.  I start typing my email [email protected] on a website and that I need to put my email in (like to request a newsletter etc).  As soon as I get to the @ it fills it in as [email protected]@.  It is baffling and frustrating. Any ideas?  Autofill in general, for all my info (adress etc) works fine.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  I would check for a substitution being set in System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Text:

  • I am having problems with my optical corded mouse that came with my iMac (it's about 2 years old) It stops working periodically, and I can't figure out how to fix it; doesn't look like I can open it to clean it, or anything like that.

My corded optical mouse (model A 1152),which came with my desktop  iMac, stops working periodically.  The little tracball may work scrolling down a page, but not up, sometimes, and I have yet to figure out how to fix it, or why it happens at all.  Is there someone who has had that problem, and what did you do?

    Hello:
Turn the mouse upside down and run it (vigorously) over a piece of paper.  Better yet, run it over a microfiber cloth.

  • I just synced with my MBP, but my iCloud account email address remains in a "inactive" status. Under settings the Apple ID and Password is wrong, and I can't find out how to fix it

I just switched over to an iPhone 4 CDMA on the verizon network the other day. I connected with my MBP/ w Lion and the sync seemed to go flawless.... All my date was pushed thru the iCloud, but then I saw that my main email address @me.com says that it is inactive when I look at it in Settings- Mail-Accounts. I can see that the iCloud account name and password is wrong, but I can not seem to find out how to correct it. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks a lot,
    Fred

You either have an incredibly complex computer setup or I think you are confusing terminology here.  If you have iTunes set to share your library with others in your iTunes preferences then other computers in the area will see it as an item when they are running their iTunes and have it set to check for shared libraries.  Your husband is probably seeing this when running iTunes on his computer.  You can disable this sharing on your computer and/or he can set his not to pick up shared libraries.
By the way, an iTunes account is something you log into when you want to buy something from Apple.  On your computer it is simply your iTunes collection or your iTunes application.  So you need to turn off sharing in your iTunes application preferences.
Your husband is seeing "his" iTunes collection when running iTunes, but it is possible he doesn't have anything in it if it is a brand new computer.

  • I keep getting an error message when I log onto Firefox and I can't figure out how to fix it, can you help?

Every time I log onto Firefox I get the following message:
"Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features."
I would like to fix whatever is causing this error message to appear, but I haven't found my, "application's profile directory" so that I can check for "read/write restrictions". My hard drive is 640GB with 554GB free space remaining.
I am running Windows 7 - 64 and am using Avast Internet Security 2013.

The Reset feature adds a folder on your desktop named Old Firefox Data. I recommend hanging onto that for a few weeks in case you discover something essential that the Reset feature left behind.

  • HT5312 How do I know if I have a rescue email address? It keeps saying my security question answers are wrong and I can't figure out how to fix it!

How do I recover my security question answers? I don't know how to tell if I have a rescue email address. I know my answers aren't wrong but I can't buy anything on iTunes without verifying the questions. Nothing seems to be working!

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of doing so include clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.

  • For some reason, I am unable to click on links in the very lower left of the screen. It does not matter if the screen is maximized or smaller. This started a little over a month ago and I can't figure out how to fix it. Any ideas?

Windows 2007. Firefox is currently up-to-date. The problem is the most notable on https://evolve.elsevier.com/cs/Satellite/StudentMyHome?Audience=Student although I have noticed it on other sites. On this site, the position of some of the links on the screen makes it difficult to do my online course work.
This does not happen in Internet Explorer, or in Firefox when used on my school's computers, although I haven't been on them since Spring semester ended a few weeks ago.

Does it help if you make the Find bar (Ctrl+F) or the Add-ons bar (Ctrl+/) (Firefox > Options or View > Toolbars) visible?

  • Airport card and linksys router?

I just had an Airport Wireless card installed for my parents' ibook g4. I bought a Linksys wireless router for them, b/c we have one (for PC desktop and laptop) and have had good luck with it. I think the two times I've had to contact Linksys via phone or live chat I got quick responses and good service.
Enter adding the Mac to the equation. When I bought the router for my parents, I mentioned we'd be using it with a Mac and the guy at the store said some people choose Netgear routers over the Linksys b/c they're RTG, but with some older Macs (theirs is an iBook G4 from a few years ago) you have to DL something to get the Mac to see the Linksys network.
Somehow the Mac doesn't see my wireless network and I can't figure out how to add it. I had a useless hour-long chat session with someone at Linksys--no resolution. Can I actually get a Mac to work with Linksys or should I give up the ship and go get a Netgear router or airport base?
I plan to set up their wireless network at their beach house, so there will be a Mac and PCs using it and then putting in their home when they return in the fall.
    TIA!

scatterall, Welcome to the discussion area!
The iBook G4's AirPort Extreme card will allow you to connect to any standard 802.11b/g network including one created by a Linksys router.
Compare the antenna wire connection to the AirPort Extreme card with the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card.
Do you have the Linksys configured to broadcast the SSID? If not, enable the SSID broadcast. This is a futile attempt at security since the SSID is still broadcast between the base station and any connected clients.
If you can't or won't enable SSID broadcast, on the iBook G4 you will need to go to the AirPort menu, select "Other...", and enter the network name and password (if wireless encryption is enabled).

  • Airport Card and Pismo

    Hello!
Picked up a used Pismo in great shape. I have a spare working Airport card and installed it. It did not work. So I erased the drive that had 10.2.3 and installed 10.4 with all updates to 10.4.8. Still does not work. I took the PowerBook apart and examined the card dock pins, cable and mobo connection. Physically they all look fine.
I am pretty avid and mac hardware repair. I have a couple Pismo motherboards and stuff in storage. Before I go taking all this apart again and swapping stuff out, could I be doing something wrong here?
I see only two sources of potential fault. The motherboard or the card. Any experts hear of Pismos having Airport issues? (all other buses are fine, firewire, UBS, etc) Any report of Airport cards dying? (I dont have another spare to test)
    Thanks!

    marco,
Did you select AirPort in System Prefs > Network > Network Port Configurations?
If you have the Hardware Test CD that came with Pismos or have another Mac that can burn the AHT, download it here and see what it says about AirPort.

  • Macbook airport card and antenna

i have 2 macbook c2d,one has the 2 antenna airport card and the wifi is very slow, the other with 3 i presume is n version, but i had to swap the screens over, now the mabook i use has a 3 antenna card but only 2 antenna from the monitor, would i be better of using the 3 antenna version but ust plugging 2 in and which 2?

I can't help with tracking down the "T" shaped antenna that plugs into the back of the G5, or an equivalent, but I can tell you that the wire that connects to the Airport card in my G5 disappears around the back of the motherboard.
It may have a metal ring on the other end but I can't see it.
I'm assuming you didn't buy the G5 new, because you are missing of the "T" shaped antenna which is supplied with the computer, so I'm guessing whoever had the G5 before you pulled the airport card out before disconnecting the antenna cable and ripped it from its mounting.
My guess is the metal ring is used to attach it somehow.

    Hello Aldric, welcome to discussions.
It's quite suspicious that your Airport card and one of your memory modules have suddenly "disappeared" at the same time.
This could certainly indicate a hardware issue, but I won't speculate as to what caused it. Sure, a power surge could do this... have you had one recently?
I would try taking the memory module, and the airport card out of your system, and then re-install them.
If your situation does not improve, then you should probably take your machine to an authorized Apple service center.
