Broken airport wire

the wire on my airport is broken, ius there a way that this can be fixed?
or is my computer screwed?

the wire can be replaced, but it involves taking the computer apart to the last nut and bolt, pretty much. So you'd want to find someone comfortable in doing that. ifixit.com may have new antenna for sale.

  • How do I fix broken airport antenna?

I have an older G5 tower, 1.8GHZ, and the airport is not working. External antenna is broken. Does anyone know how to remove the broken antenna?
    < Edited by Host >

If there is any portion of the antenna body protruding out of the connector, you should be able to just pull it out.  You may need to use a pair of pliers, but it should come out.  If you have completely broken off the antenna and only have the connector remaining, then you might be able to pull the shell out with very small needlenose pliers, though the center conductor might be a bit of a problem.

  • Broken airport antenna female plug?

So, my airport t-antenna's needle plug broke. I replaced it with a wire safety pin. Worked wonerfully. The wifi connection was just as good, and it was cheaper than spending $40 on a new t-antenna.
Unfortunately, today, I knocked it out accidentally and now when I place it back in it just falls out. It's loose. It doesn't hold itself in. And even when I hold it in, it doesn't pick up a signal. I have no idea what's wrong.
Is there any way I can fix it?

buy a USB WiFi adapter, make sure it is compatable with your version of OS,  cheaper faster more efficient than airport.

  • Broken airport card and i can't dish out £220 to fix it

Hi, my airport card has just broken, the range has been halved so at the moment i have to hug my wireless box to get signal. As the title says i cant afford the repair, its an old computer out of warrenty and im a student without surplus cash. I was wondering does anyone know any cheaper ways off fixing this? wireless USB sticks that are compatible with older macbooks?
    Many thanks

The Asus WL-167g wireless USB adapter works with my old iBook as well as my new MacBook. I tried it just to be sure, although of course I use the Airport card on the MacBook. If you use it, remember to turn off Airport.
The Asus WL-167g costs $17 at New Egg. You can download the Mac driver here:

  • Broken airport card and hard drive on MacBook Pro and can't go to recovery with LAN.

    Hi.
My MacBook Pro 13" (early-2011)'s hard drive has broken, and I bought a Kingston 120GB SSDNow instead.
Earlier, the airport card and cable has been broken too.
Are there other ways I can use LAN to recover my mac? It wants me to use wifi, but the airport card is broken...
If so, why does it only want to use Wifi instead of LAN?
LAN is like the extra parachute just in case, or the extra octopus regulator in scuba diving.

Is your model on the list? Did you ever upgrade its firmware? If not, then all you can do is start by booting from your Snow Leopard DVD and installing Snow Leopard on your SSD. Be sure to first partition and format the SSD for use with OS X. Once you install Snow Leopard you can download and install the firmware update for future needs.

  • Broken airport??????

HI. I have a G4 ibook, almost 3 years old. Recently i have been having a problem with airport. I have been using a wireless connection which has been running fine for years. This week however, my ibook keeps disconnecting from it. When i go to reconnect, it scans for a few seconds but wont pick anything up. It also wont pick up any of the neighbours, even though it usually picks up about 5 or 6. Theres no pattern to the way it does this, i just have to wait until it decides to connect. Its not my router; im using another laptop to write this message on. Is there any way i can check the airport hardware is broken??? And can i get this replaced??? Unless there may be another option???
    Thanks for your help

I suspected 10.5.2. Many have the same problem. I'd suggest visiting the Leopard Discussions for a possible work around but as of now there's no fix. I'm sure Apple is working on the problem.

  • Powerbook g4 right hinge broken pink wire broken...

well as the title states the right hinge on my powerbook is broke, and theres a pink wire broken. my screen is not viewable at all unless i put a flashlight to it. is this an easy fix at all...if i take it into a repair shop? just wondering if its worth the $ to fix.

It is not a trivial repair, since you report a broken wire.  The right hinge of the Titanium powerbooks carries the cable from the inverter to the backlight, so if your book is a Titanium model, that explains why you have no backlight.  Hinges themselves can be replaced.  I just swapped both hinges in my slightly older unit with the not-inexpensive steel replacements from Powerbook Medic.  We'll see how they hold up, compared to the aluminum originals.
With a broken wire, though, you are looking at replacing the inverter cable, which is even more involved than replacing just a hinge and might involve some serious disembowelment of the machine, as otherwise you will be likely unable to actually get the cable fished through the back of the upper case.  This was my "older" TiBook just before replacing the display about five years ago.  Note the important off-camera location in the blue arrow.
The situation can be handled, but not without serious effort.

  • Can I take a broken USB wire to Apple Store for replacement (within Warranty)?

That's my question, the USB is broken on both sides, can I just walk into the Apple store, show them my iPhone in warranty and get a replacement?

Yes, it definitely is defective, I've had to send my headphones in before and wait for a replacement, but since they opened an Apple Store here I wanted to just get it from there rather than the hassle of shipping.

  • Broken airport antenna

The internal antenna on my airport extreme card broke. would an apple store be able to fix it?

An Apple service center could fix it - and that could be arranged via your local Apple Store.

  • Tiger Updates Have Broken Airport Appleshare File Transfer, Horribly Slow

Big horrible slowdowns in file transfer over wireless have me pulling my (remaining) hair out. I have seen several other posts and here are results of what I found. Hope you can add some suggestions.
I had given my Apple Airport base station (b) to my brother in Pakistan after I found a Belkin (g) at Staples for free (after rebates) and have been using it for a while (maybe almost 2 years). Not a pretty box but the price is beautiful and it works OK.
My real use for it is for my eMac and a couple of older PowerBooks I keep downstaors as a "music studio" for my music and podcast recording (and transferring upstairs to my server folder over wireless) and web browsing.
All worked OK as I would transfer the files to my PowerBook upstairs (connected Ethernet to a router connected to the wireless router or sometimes directly via Airport connection if laptop was not at my desk). Both configurations worked fine (only limitation being my eMac's (b) speed older Airport speed).
Since 10.4.4 or 10.4.5 (as that is the last "change" I can see made on my system overall, I have discpovered I cannot even transfer a 3.5 MB file from the 10.4.5 eMac to ANY of the other machines.
After reading several threads here it seems several people have noticed the HORRIBLE SLOWDOWN if not complete death of Airport usability for file transfer. People are being made to go around changing router settings, channel IDs etc. That sounds like typical tech support bunk to me.
After all, if the channel ID on the wireless router is a problem why is my web browing going on at normal speed but a 120 MB file transfer just told me it will take 2023642128 hours. No, I am not kidding. That is the time it would take to get man to Mars.
Someone else was told to hook up the machines over Ethernet. Sure, that works for machines in the same room - and is a bearable temporary solution in that case - but not in an upstairs/downstairs situation. Burning CD-Rs to transfer 120 MB files every time is also not a good way to show off Apple technology.
So, in my humble opinion, some recent update from Apple just broke something in Airport networking or Appleshare. So, I did some more testing.
I love Apple, getting friends to switch all the time, but annoyed at these bugs that basically render standard applications unusable. So far I have not been able to figure out what the problem is. Here is some more info I got.
I already deleted all the network port configurations on the 10.4.5 eMac except wireless. Activity Monitor shows 0.1 to 11 kbps speed (yes, that is 0.1 to 11 Kbps not Mbps). No other apps are running, Tried connecting to different machines. All machines can transfer data at high speed except over Airport/wireless.
I then fired up a PowerBook G3 500 10.3.9. It is slow as a machine, but it has no problems picking and dropping files on to other machines over Airport (it is sitting in the same area as the emac so signal etc. issues would effect them equally).
Next I came upstairs and changed my 10.4.5 PowerBook G4, previously working perfectly on Ethernet,to Airport only use. Lo and behold, it could not go to the Internet nor could it do any AppleShare transfers even with a PowerMac G4 which is Ethernet only.
There could still be two culprits, the Apple 10.4.5 update OR maybe the wireless router went bad. So I tried all of the above after changing channels on the Belkin router. Still no luck.
It could still be the router, so:
    - I changed the HP 17" 8080 laptop from Ethernet to wireless only and it flies.
    - I switched the PowerBook G4 BACK to Ethernet and it flies.
    - I kept the PC laptop on WIRELESS and did file transfers from it to the now ETHERNET using PowerBook G4 and it works fine even PowerBook to PC and PowerBook to PowerMac both using Ethernet and 10.4.5 works fine too.
    - I now tried to get or put files from the 10.4.5 ETHERNET PowerBook G4 to PowerBook G3 10.3.9 WIRELESS and it worked fine. i.e. no problems with older OS one using wireless.
    - Then I tried 10.4.5 PowerBook G4 Ethernet to eMac wireless 10.4.5 and it would not take or drop a file, unless I was willing to wait for 3 years and 2 months.
In other words - the ONLY common thread is that 10.4.5 with wireless/Airport use will break Appleshare file transfers.
Obviously some planetary confluence did not suddenly corrupt all the settings in all my computers at the same as many others, who also happen to be using 10.4.5 or maybe 10.4.4 because the 10.3.9 using OLD PowerBook with 512 MB RAM does wireless file transfers faster than the 10 times faster Macs using Apple's own cards and newest software.
Seems like a now-becoming-usual Apple update that breaks things.
Hope you can suggest a solution so I do not have to burn CDs on the eMac for every 1 MB file I need to transfer upstairs.
    Imran

Mac OS X 10.4.5 (#9): Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater; SIIG FireWire card not working; more
Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater Over the past few days we've outlined a number of fixes for network slowness that occurs after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5, including entry of a DNS address, toggling of IPv6 and more.
We've now received notes indicating that a tried and true workaround for various issues -- re-applying the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater (as noted in our general workarounds for 10.4.5) -- can have beneficial effects in this case as well.
    MacFixIt reader Fred Moore writes:
"After much thrashing about and wasted time, I appear to have solved both the slow web page loading as well as my email sending problems in one stroke. Guess how: download the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater and reapply it. This nonsense has cost me a lot of time but everything seems to work now. IPv6 is set back to Automatic, there is no entry in the Network prefs DNS server field, and my email sending works perfectly (so far; I've sent a bunch of tests). Why didn't I just download the combo updater and apply from my hard drive at the beginning? Well, Software Update should (yes, I know, I know...) work. I'll never again use Software Update for a system update."

  • USB WIFI solution for iBook G4 with broken AirPort

Hi folks, I posted earlier about my iBook G4 which just recently began having the dreaded AirPort related kernel panics. The machine works fine with AirPort disabled, and now I'm looking for a USB wifi stick (dongle) that will keep me wireless.
There are tons of posts on the web regarding different wifi sticks that kind of work, but I'm looking for definitive references on which are the best. I'm mostly concerned with flaky drivers. Some time ago, I tried out the D-Link G-122 with correct chipset and Ralinktech drivers. The drivers were horrible and the D-Link eventually just burned out.
Since then there have been several more USB sticks that claim to work in 10.4.x, but I see several of them use the same drivers. WHERE IS THE SOLUTION TO MAKE ALL THESE BUSTED IBOOKS WIRELESS AGAIN??? And I don't mean a new logic board! It sounds like most folks say to go with an ethernet bridge, but that's not what I'm looking for, as I'm tethered to an ethernet cable already.
Here are a few USB Wifi sticks I've come across recently. Can anyone comment on any of these and success with 10.4.x or iBooks?

If it is sold by Macsales, chances are it will work.
But I will also say this as a qualifier. If your iBook G4 predates the introduction of USB 2 on the iBook G4, your best speed on a USB WiFi is going to be 12 Mbps. And that's if no other USB devices are hooked up to it, because it has one USB bus. You are much better off getting the airport card inside the iBook replaced by an authorized dealer. Anything that will cause damage to internal components of the machine likely will affect more than one part of the machine, and you just happen to be lucky that it hasn't caused further problems for you. It does not pay to have a machine limping. Get the entire machine fixed.

  • Broken Airport Extreme Base Station?

Just in case this is of help to others -- My Base Station fell off the shelf, and 8' to the floor. Result, no signal transmitted. Apple shop said any repair would be uneconomic. Almost bought a new one, but then thought worth opening up the Base Station first. (Ifixit give a description of how to open up the case.) Found the fall had dislodged a card (the wireless card?). Reseated it, and all ok. Doesn't look to me like there is much that can physically fail in these.

    Good going, Mr. Fixit!
If the option was to throw it out and get a new one, it never hurts to open it up and try a DIY remedy. Now if it was a Time Capsule and it was on at the time... I'd have some doubts...

  • Either Broken display inverter or cracked ccft going to attempt autopsy

    OK
I have read through some of the threads here but thought I would put out there that with the help of a gifted engineer, I am going to attempt to take apart my broken 17 inch apple powerbook screen, find out if the tubes are cracked or it's the display inverter, and see if we can self fix. I have backed up the hard drive, done some research into buying the tubes (no solution as yet) and the display inverter (I have a source for this) and will be operating over the weekend of Mar 16. Any helpful comments or sources of info for opening the lcd itself (as opposed to the case where the motherboard is) where to buy the cold cathode fluorescent tubes etc. would be helpful. I have one of the older builds (1 Ghz, 1024 MB 60 GB hard drive) and don't want to spend the 1000 dollars upwards to have apple fix it. Have replaced it with a newer model which I am typing on, but would like to resurrect it as I believe it cost me 3500 dollars when I bought it. I will take pics of the process. Rick

    Hi All,
I have just done the display swap and here are my musings on the proceedure...
    What to fear -
Be carefull of the obvious, like pawing the components with your static-ridden bady parts
Be very afraid of the bit where you have to prise the back panel off, opening the edge a tiny bit with a plastic knife or similar, allowing you to then undo the numerous clips using a very sharp pointed tool-while at the same time avoiding trashing the innards with said tool esp. the airport wires that run up the sides of the display.
Having then removed the side screws that hold the display you will find it still doesn't want to come out because it is glued (not strong glue though) to the bezel....gentle persuasion does the trick, but you would be forgiven for thinking there is some srew there you've missed!
    What not to fear..
...bending anything....just bend it back (within reason!) the bezel and rear are as pliable as putty.
    Cheers and good luck,
    Niall

  • Airport issue after update - Status grey / Connection OK - Solved

    Hello All,
Just wanted to share an issue I had that was driving me nuts, and then the final solution.
Ever since the recent airport extreme update, my airport status has been broken. The menubar icon has shown up as grey / no signal, and when I click on it, the only option I have is to 'turn airport on' which when selected does nothing.
In spite of this, though, my airport connection for my preferred network is working fine - I just can't select a new network off the list (there is no list, even in internet connect)
This has been a problem since the airport extreme update. Nothing I did seemed to help. Finally, I called apple and spent 45 minutes on the phone with them, doing the obligatory pram resets and power management resets, etc. Nothing seemed to help. We found a way to enter networks manually (go to system prefs / network / airport and add your network there) but the status problem was still there.
After I got off the phone, I went to the apple support page and found the airport extreme software update and downloaded it manually and installed it.
Manually Downloading and Installing the airport extreme update again solved the problem.
I don't know why the software-update version didn't quite work, but installing the update from the website did solve the gray / broken airport status menubar problem.
Just thought I'd share that with everyone, as it's been driving me nuts for the better part of a week.
    Cheers!

I would like to confirm that update worked for me too. Actually, I didn't need to do it manually like some of you did. It worked straight away after automatic software update.
My problem was occasional inability to connect to my wireless router. The problem would have been solved by SSID change manually on the router and reconnection.
After the latest update, everything is working flawlessly.
I have (not so known) OZENDA router and didn't have Parallels installed.

  • Airport troubles

Hello all. I'm new to macs so I'm wondering if I got a broken airport module or something. Is anybody else having problems with their Airport on the mini connecting to their router?
Currently I got 2 PCs and an Ipod touch wirelessly connected to my router (Linksys WRTG54GS, latest manufacturer f/w) using WPA-Personal security with AES encryption. They connect to the router and are able to go on the internet.
My new mac mini doesn't connect to the router reliably. Network name is set to the SSID. Security is WPA personal. Password is the correct network key (tried both hex and regular word for password).
If I reboot the mac the Airport is able to connect to the router fine (4 bars on the status icon) and gets it's IP info correctly, then 10 or so minutes later it freakin scans for a new network and loses connection...
Right now I'm using a USB wireless modem to connect. I just hope I don't have a bad Airport module.
I downloaded all the Software Updates from that apple menu too.

I just upgraded my RAM and took the opportunity to examine the antennas closely. I'm just guessing here but basically it looks like the wi-fi signal comes out of the top of the mac mini in a sort of hemispherical shape. This might explain the poor quality signal coming from the mac mini in my previous post. In my case the router and mac mini are at the same height.
It's been only one day but ping tests to the router were more consistent after tilting my mac so the top is sort of facing the wireless router. In other words I stuck a 1.5" thick book under the front end of the case heh. Another alternative might be raising the router up higher.
If anybody is curious here's an extreme case of one of my ping tests with the mac mini level on my desk:
