Broken Arrow Keys On ibook G4

Hey!
The arrow keys all of a sudden stopped working a couple of days ago on my iBook. All other keys work fine. Is there a way to fix this?

It's odd that they all quit at once. You could try popping off the keycaps and cleaning underneath, just in case an accumulation of debris is the problem:

Also, try an external keyboard and see if it has the same problem. If it does, the problem likely lies somewhere other than with the keyboard itself.

Broken arrow keys?

For some reason, the down and right keys aren't working. They work fine in other programs but in this program they fail. What's going on?

if you're testing in the flash test environment, disable shortcut keys. retest.

Ibook G4 Keyboard Arrow Key

hi, maybe sombody has a helpful hint here?
I have an iBook G4, I've only had it since May. maybe April of 2005.
just one day ago, the left arrow key (also marked "home") stopped responding.
I can physically press the key just as always. Feels normal.
but it doesn't do anything. the cursor doesn't move left when it is pressed.
the other arrow keys work fine.
command+left arrow doesn't do anything either.
I'm not terribly abusive to the keyboard.
I use the up and down arrow keys more than the other arrow keys.
all the other keys on the keyboard respond fine.
is something broken?
I lifted out the keyboard and there did not appear to be and dirt or debris of any kind. What do I do?
(I am in Tokyo, and there are 2 apple stores here, but I have never had good response from apple japan on the pone, quite cold actually.)

ironically, I ended up doing exactly as you suggested just a day befor you posted! Actually, two days before because I'm in Tokyo, but I'm from the Austin area. The Tokyo Shibuya ward Apple Store is no exception to the world class service. I was concerened I would end up paying for a new keyboard, and fully expected that. Boy, was I surprised when they made my day....
not only was it free (they said still under warranty) but also they replaced it while I waited!
One tip for anyone in Tokyo who needs to get help from the Apple stores here, go early to make an appointment, because they get booked up fast!
This is a very densely populated city, and you can bet they have a 3rd store on the way, if not a fourth...

P.S. I had a Yikes G4 400 back in college, great machine, but did have bus errors a lot. Is yours upgraded (i presume) ? Do you or did you ever get those bus errors? (particularly in the old OS)

IBook G4 arrow keys

For some unknown reason the arrow keys (page up/page down/home/end) on my iBook have stopped working? Does anyone have any idea what could cause this?

I'm having a similar issue on a PowerBook G4. In this case, only the right arrow key does not work correctly. All other arrow keys work as expected. In some apps (TextEdit, Safari) pressing RIGHT arrow does nothing, in other apps it seems to be mapped incorrectly. For instance in iTunes, right arrow key press produces the same efffect as "tab" (namely, tabbing between search field, browse box, library pane, and music list).
In response to your questions: All other keys work correctly. Have not installed RAM or an AirPort Extreme card. Have not opened the keyboard. FN+RIGHT Arrow (as well as UP arrow) key in Safari correctly produces a page down effect deduced from the fact that FN+LEFT arrow (and FN+DOWN arrow) key also produces page down effect. Other users on the machine do not have the issue.
Additional info: the user where the problem exists is the Administrator user.
Your help (and perhaps an explanation of whats going on here) will be very much appreciated!

Broken Right Arrow Key

The right arrow key is broken and unresponsive on my macbook. What can i do to get it working again? It is no longer under warranty. I am currently very close to a Apple Store, do they repair computers there? Please let me know ASAP. Thanks.

If it's only an arrow key, they should be able to replace it. If it affected the entire keyboard, they got to pluck the whole thing out and get you a new one.

Navigate using arrow keys broken - 10.4.6

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem.
I can no longer navigate the finder using the directional arrow keys in column mode after updating to 10.4.6. I hope this is just me because it's a real PITA if this cannot be fixed.
The arrow keys work in other view modes (list and icon), and also within other applications open/save dialogue boxes.

OK, much to my embarrassment it seems to have fixed itself after two restarts... very strange indeed. Has anyone experienced this sort of intermittent issue before?
I was thinking that I had discovered my first problem with any Apple software update, but alas, not to be. So other than that (non)issue, another good update, now where's Aperture 1.1?

G580: arrow keys broken?

I got a G580 about a week ago. Yesterday I found the up and left arrow keys aren't working, then found they're working intermittently (I hadn't noticed them not working before, and they still work occasionally). I'm pretty sure it's the keyboard, because when the keys aren't working, they don't work in Windows 8, or Ubuntu, or UEFI, and apparently don't register as key-presses at all.
I really like those arrow keys, but I can probably live with the arrow keys on the num-pad if I can't get them back (I don't really want to return it and set up a new laptop again). Is there anything I can try to repair them, or else any reason I should return the computer immediately (like, is my whole keyboard about to go)?

How to fix a broken right arrow key

My macbook pro is still fully functional, and so is the right arrow key. I can push the top of the key and it will still, you know, register (if that is what it's called). But, it feels like a pin isnt attatched underneath the key. Apple instructed me to go get it repaired, but i really dont have the time. If it is a simple repair, i will do it myself. But, if no one has a clue, I will just go repair it. Thanks guys!

Arrow Keys?

The new keyboard/mouse pane in Tiger's System Preferences now allows one to change application shortcuts. I am left-handed and wish to change the 'Back' and 'Forward' menu commands to the left and right arrow keys in selected applications. I was able to do this without problem on both my G4 Dual and Mac Mini (both with Apple external keyboards). My iBook, however, will not take the change. When I try to set the shortcut, the 'no way' bell rings. Can anyone help?

Number pad/arrow keys

I was trying out the arrow keys in the built in laptop keyboard on a program and found that the numlk does not light up but it does on my desktop. Is there a way to use the numlk in the application i am using?

Run, don't walk to the phone. Call Applecare and indicate you have a warranty problem. The KB is (or will be shortly) out of warranty. It may take you some time, but it may save you some money in the long run.
Incidentally, it appears to me that your KB is, indeed, broken.

Arrow keys with direct select tool problem

Hi list,
I hope somebody can help me. I just switched from MX to CS3.
Now selecting an anchor with the direct select tool and
moving it with
the arrow keys moves it 30 Steps at once (Using normal select
tool works
as usual). Strangely enough I have to undo 30 Times for one
time hitting
the arrow key.
Does anyone know this problem or have a hint where to switch
this?

Your frustration is understandable. Anchor point selection is unforgiving in InDesign, especially when compared to Illustrator with Smart Guides, although I wouldn't call it "broken."
I suspect most InDesign users don't do enough "path editing" on their InDesign pages for there to be an outcry over this.

That's always been a function of the Direct Select tool. Simply, if you're aiming for an anchor point and select the frame's content instead, you've missed the point. <rimshot>
There's nothing broken, and no advice to offer, other than zoom in further, slow down, and keep an eye on the pointer cues which change when the pointer is over an anchor point. I suppose it's also possible you could make adjustments to your mouse/input device settings that might help you move and click more precisely.

Wired keyboard-number pad&right arrow keys not working-serial # help!

Hello to whomever reads/replies -
I have a wired keyboard for my iMac(it's not the aluminum imac, but the version before it with the keyboard and mouse that came with it). I got this keyboard June 2007 after the original keyboard sent to me had problems with it with some keys not working properly. And now about a week ago my right arrow key and the zero, decimal point, one, two, three and enter button on the keypad stopped working out of the blue. One night they worked and the next they didn't with nothing being done different, nor was the keyboard stored differently.
I've cleaned the keyboard inside and out twice and tried pushing the little squishy thing under the keys when you pop them off and there's no response with those being pushed either so something's got to be wrong with the keyboard itself.
Also, when I go online to look up the warrenty on this keyboard, #1 i can't find where it tells me where the serial number on the **** WIRED keyboard is, just gives me where i can find it on the WIRELESS keyboards. Ugh. So I looked under my keyboard and punched in the numbers and letters that i found on a little silver plate just below where the wire and USB ports are in the top of the keyboard and I get an 'invalid serial number' error message.
So.. could anyone help me with these problems? I'd really rather not call tech support since it took me over two hours to explain to the man that I spoke with last year about my other keyboard and I just don't have the time! Thanks in advance!

Cannot Press More Than 2 Arrow Keys

My computer does not register more than 2 arrow keys being pressed at the same time. Is this a defect, or is it not supposed to? Either way, it is very irritating...

I am playing StepMania, and my Ignition pads are broken. I'm sure there are other programs that also want more than 2 arrow keys pressed at once. This isn't exactly a car... It has many many possible uses.

Right Arrow Key Dead

Recently I've noticed my right arrow key is no longer working. I also have a USB keyboard and all works fine so on that so I assume this is a hardware failure.
Am I going to need a whole new keyboard, or is it possible to repair the one key?
Does anyone know of any issues or common faults to check before I make enquiries on a new keyboard?

Are you under warranty? If so, it is Apple's problem. If not, it's possible a little debris has collected under the keycap and is causing the key to malfunction. It should be possible to pull off the keycap and check. I have done this on my iBook, but never on my MBP. If you have access to an Apple Store, you could see if someone at the genius bar could show you how to remove the keycap and check under it.
Testing with an external USB keyboard is exactly the right thing to do. It demonstrates that the problem lies with the built in keyboard.
Are you planning to do the work yourself? If so, here is a site that might be useful to you:

It doesn't cover everything, but you can at least get an idea of what might be involved in a repair. But again, if you're under warranty, let Apple do it.

Bridge CC crashes while using arrow keys to switch images

Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 Adobe Bridge 2014 on Mac is crashing every time I press an arrow key to move through images in bridge. I can click to manually select images with no problem, but using the up/down arrow keys to move to the next image up/down brings up the spinning beach ball and immediately locks the program up, requiring a force quit.
Did the usual Mac permissions and fsck stuff to no avail. Ideas?

Thanks for moving my post to this correct forum. (I'm afraid I missed it when I originally posted.) A bit more information based on attempts to fix and on further attempts to use the program.
After launching Bridge — before I select any specific image — it initially seems to work correctly. For example, I can use menu items and select and open folders. However...
Once I drill down through folders to show raw files in the browser the problems begin. I can manually select an image by clicking on it, but the program the locks up if I do things such as attempt to navigate to another image using the up/down keyboard arrows or select anything from a menu that would perform an action on the image. (The problem happens with any image selected — not one particular image, and with images that worked fine until 48 hours ago.)
ACR still works. I can double click an image and open the raw converter, and I can doubly click a smart object image in Photoshop do go back to the raw editor and it allows me to edit.
I did the step of holding down command-option-shift at Bridge startup and selecting all three options to delete the cache and so forth. Still no joy.
I did the usual Mac disk/file system repair stuff — repairing permissions and repairing disk — to no avail.
I downloaded and reinstalled Bridge but the problem persists.
Since I have a full backup of the drive on which Bridge is installed and since this backup drive is bootable, I double clicked the copy of Bridge on the backup drive... and it opened (slowly!) but worked correctly. (Not that this means much, but my second instance on my laptop continues to run fine.)
I'm stuck, in a serious way, at this point. Thoughts?
