Broken Black Zen Micro on second day...

Well I got my zen micro for christmas and everything was working perfect. Then tonight after filling up the harddri've with more music, I stop the zen micro in windows, unplug the player... and it freezes. Now this is not the first time it has done this to me so I take out the battery and replace it. I see the startup screen, then it says creative, and thats as far as it goes. Nothing I do will get it beyond that point. I tried all four options in the rescue/recovery mode, but to no avial. Everytime I try one of the four it says its beginning it but never changes and the only way to unlock is to replace battery again.
The whole reason I wanted it was so I could take it when I go skiing tommorow morning, so needless to say Im pretty upset. We bought it from walmart.com becuase it was the only for sure way to get a black one before christmas at the time, so now I have to ship the darn thing back and I probably wont get it back for a number of weeks because, again, they are sold out.
Just wanted to rant a little, hopefully none of this happens to any of yours. NightMessage Edited by Seanpr23 on 2-27-2004 05:05 AM

I got a zen micro on the 23rd and it was broken as soon as I opened the box. The demo music skipped and would freeze up if I touched the player while it was playing. It felt like I was carrying a CD player from 995 with no skip protection. I decided I'd give it a full charge and transfer some music just to make sure. Once I had about 400 tracks on there I tried it and again it was really buggy, freezing, not playing any music. I'd reboot and it'd freeze on the "Creative" Logo on start-up. I tried scan disk, formatting, and I reloaded the firmware about 5 times to no avail. I don't want to cause a problem here but I bought this product because I thought it would be better than an ipod but if the one I got is representiti've of the product Creative makes then it looks like I was sorely mistaken.

  • 4GB Black Zen Micro - Insentive touch

I have had this Micro Zen for about a year. I used the touchpad at the default setting (medium sensitivity). Over the time, I had hard time using vertical scroll bar (one in the middle, used for changing playlists/tracks/volume)., I changed the senstivity to highest - it helped, but not for long. Now 4 out of 5 times I cant get it to work.
Anybody else facing the same problem? Any workarounds.
    Thanks in advance
    Kapil
PS. I havent upgraded the firmware.

You should follow the advice in the "My Zen is not behaving properly, won't startup, or goes into rescue mode. What should I do?" section of the FAQ, just in case this is being caused by a firmware related issue.
You should also have at least the ..0 firmware. Don't upgrade to the v2 firmware unless you play on needing PlayForSure support.

The Micro can support pretty much any type of encoding and bit rate used in an MP3 file. However using a non-standard format (standard ones would be: 28, 60, 92, 320, etc...), may result in it not having the ability to transfer. VBR or CBR encoding techniques are supported using whatever encoder you like such as LAME.
If the file was not tagged properly then that could be a reason why WMP is refusing to transfer it, because if it was transfered then there is a risk that the player will have a hard time reading it and therefore freeze. Its just a precaution WMP might take, although I'm not certian on this eventhough it does seem logical that WMP is programmed to do this.
If its a WMA file then thats different, as the Micro does not support the Lossless encoding. And if you dont have the PFS firmware, you do but just mentioning, then it will also not support subscription songs.
Perhaps WMP itself isn't working correctly and needs an update? Check to see if any updates are available via the player itself and Windows Update.
If you can provide the techincal details of the songs that would be nice
Thanks DM for the answer, but as I wrote. There was a problem with my playlists, nothing to do with the player.
    Cheers,
    Jorge.

  • Zen Micro black: Out of stock

So r all the black zen micro out of stock? or only on this web? When r they gonna restock?

Yes, I saw that as well, but in my experience with buy.com, you never really know when your order is going to be deli'vered. I am extremely pleased--and somewhat amazed--at the speed of Amazon.com.
The last item I ordered from buy.com "supposedly" was in-stock. After waiting about a week for a shipping confirmation, I contacted them. At this point they told me the item was no longer available. I was bummed but also angry that I had to enquire in order to be notified. Had they planned to notify me? Then, the next evening, there is the item I ordered sitting outside my door, not, by the way, in a regular shipping box, but in the original packaging--for anyone going by to see. When I am expecting a deli'very, I really appreciate being able to track it so I can post a note for the deli'very person to leave the package somewhere other than my front doorstep. That last buy.com experience really soured me on them. = (

  • Dust behind zen micro scre

    hi,
i have a 5gb black zen micro i have had it for almost 2 months. after the first few days i started to see bits of dust and stuff behind the screen! has this happened to anyone else? and is there a way to fix it's
    thanks!

There isn't really any great way of removing the dust. You can try using canned air (to blow through the holes in the player, to try and shift the dust), but be warned that most canned air produces condensation which is obviously a very bad idea. There's some "flavours" of canned air that are designed for electronics (I've forgotten the exact name, but try searching old posts) and don't produce condensation.

  • Zen Micro Complai

After several weeks of comparing the Zen Micro and iPod mini I decided to buy a Zen Micro the other day. I can't say I've been terribly impressed though. I am considering returning it and getting the iPod mini, but I just wanted to see if there were any comments on the problems I'm having before I do so.
First, the battery life seems to be far less than creative promises. After a full charge it only lasted 4-5 hours the other day. I like switching around a lot which probably uses more power with the micro dri've, but I was still disappointed to see the battery go so fast. Additionally I bought mine retail and it did not come with the wall plug adapter and can only be charged via the USA bus. And the online Zen Micro manual recommends to not fill the disk to capacity as it will drain the batter faster. So 5GB turns to 4.6 something of formatted space then turns into how much space you can use without using the battery too much?
Second, I've been using the free 30-day Napster to go trial, which I have been happy with, but transferring the songs to the Zen Micro seems to take a painfully long time. Even though my laptop's USB ports are 2.0 it is not transferring anywhere near USB 2 speeds. Also I'm used to an MP3 player that connects to the computer as a removable storage device, allowing me to create my own folders and organize my music any way I'd like. I know both the iPod and the Zen Micro both use their own software to transfer and organize music, which I am not too happy with.
Third, there is a several second lag between songs when you skip between tracks. I suppose this has to do with caching the file, but this isn't my first disc-based mp3 player and I've never had this problem before. Its not a huge deal, only a few second delay, but its really starting to annoy me.
I guess I'm just not as impressed as I had hoped to be. I have been thinking about the iPod for a while and was impressed by it whenever I used one of my friends, but just decided to get the Zen Micro based on the larger disc size, more features and compatibility with subscription-based music services. But like I said I'm considering returning it in favor of an iPod. Any comments/reccomendations about these issues before I send my money to Apple?

. Things you can do to save battery are covered in the FAQ Part post. Search on "battery".
    2. The subscription based services do a lot of license syncrhronisation which adds a massi've overhead to the file transfer time.
    3. Again, this seems to happen with music downloaded from subscription services. Presumably it's the player checking the license data. If this is a big issue for you drop support an e-mail with a complaint.
The advantage the Micro has over the iPod at the very least is subscription based music. The iTunes Store doesn't have this. I'm not here to sell you a Micro (or an iPod), but there are other threads which cover the differences (have a look via the search function).
Edit: Oops, a couple of others beat me to it, but I'll leave the reply as is Message Edited by SSR on 06-24-2005 04:6 PM

  • Zen Micro Jack Socket troub

    Hi all,
Got a silver zen micro for crimbo and I gotta say Iove it, the desktop software is a bit clunky in operation and crashes often but I can wait for an update....
I do have a problem with it though, the slightest wiggle of the headphone jack causes dreadful playback problems. The sound doesnt drop out from either channel but becomes distorted, sometimes the bass frequencies dissapear and I'm left with a thin and distant sound and at other times the distortion is like very bad encoding noises - garbled . Does anyone else suffer this problem or have any suggestions apart from RMA? This is not an issue with the phones or the lead, I've tested with several pairs and the distortion is coming from the player.
If I can fix this problem I'd happily recommend this player as it kicks ass in every other way.
    Thanks
    tonga

I have the same problems with a week old black Zen Micro. I am returning mine and won't buy another one till they have fixed the problem. The player worked well for three to four days and now gives good sound most of the time but a slight touch to the headphone plug and sound becomes distorted or the vocals would disappear. Looks like a poorly soldered headphone jack or a loose connection. Other than that it is a great player but useless if headphone jack has quality issues. The other issue I experienced was that the player would turn on automatically when it was off and the headphone plug was touched. That problem got fixed with the new firmware upgrade (v.3). I have not tried the v2.x firmware upgrade since that requires a reformat (or deletion of all data).

  • Zen micro freezes while loading firmw

Ok I got my zen micro like 3 days ago and while listening to it at school it all of a sudden froze and I coulden't even cut it off so I had to take teh battery out. When turning it on agian it wen't into recovery mode and then I did a clean disk which did nothing. So I started to do a format (I really didn't care about what was on it and I was antsy to get it to work agian). It ran out of batterys while formating so I got home and started charing it. Formating was taking to long (I waited over an hour) so I tried to reinstal the firmware. We'll it gets to the very last bar on the firmware update and it freezes, the micro stops wokring again and I have to take out the battery to get it to cut off again. I've done this like 3 times, and I tried formating two more times. I have no clue what to do, any help?
    edit...
ok after looking around some it seems that this has happened (I heard a weird noise too and I forgot to mention that, I figured it had always been there cuase its bearly noticable but....might be ralated to the problem). Seems like the best option is just to return it and get a new one. But is there something I did to cause this? only thing that I could think I possibly did to it was drop it from about 4 inches up, and it that broke it then I might want to rethink this thing, But I had droped it the day before that so I don't think that caused the problem. Also looking around these things seem to have alot of bugs. headphone jack not wokring, comp not detecting it (which I had to deal with the day I got it), and many other freezes, is this thing really worth it's do the bugs like this come with all the players?Message Edited by Nyzse on 0-3-2006 03:07 AM

Format should complete in a few seconds, so your player sounds faulty unfortunately. Contact support to get a replacement.

  • Zen Micro A/C power cord opti

    Hi All,
My Micro recharges just fine when plugged into the USB of my computer with Creative software. However, it will not charge using USB on other computers.
Also, I tried plugging in my Blackberry charger (output 5V,?0.7A)?to the USB port. The Micro has a blinking thunderbolt over the battery icon, but won't run on the AC and won't charge the battery. I believe that "official" Creative Zen chargers are in the same power range as my Blackberry charger, so I don't get the problem. As far as I can figure, my software is updated and current. I don't want to buy a pricey Creative Zen charger if it is not going to work with my (broken?) Zen Micro.
    Any thoughts? Thanks!

    Thanks Coach!
I can't view that particular one (work blocks ebay), but have seen others that are probably similar:
    http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...389&dcaid=7902
    http://www.amazon.com/Rapid-Charger-.../dp/B000E9C63Q
The thing is, my Blackberry charger?seems to have the same specs, my Zen knows it is plugged in, but the battery does not charge (whether I'm using it or not).

  • ZEN MICRO detection problems / recognition problems 9

For the life of me I can't figure this out. My brother bought a Zen micro a few days ago and we tried to install it but the comp WILL detect the ZM but will not/can not find a driver. Thus "?!Creative Zen Micro" appears in the Device manager under "? Other Devices" but will not work. Have read and tried alot, but nothing. Using an old Celeron 900MHz with Windows 98SE. Did many fresh installs from install disk....but nothing. Even tried a diff USB cable (though longer) and diff USB port....but nothing. The comp detects the Zen Micro (as named above) but is unable to find the drivers eventhough when requested I direct the detection to the Install disk for any drivers it may contain. Any knowledge shared would be appreciated.Message Edited by microscan on 02-06-2006 06:40 AM

I tried those before but just for good measure I just now again tried them. Nothing has changed. Still detecting but not recognizing/no driver. I forgot to mention last time that even when I try to open the program "Creative System Information" (by clicking on "Start", "Programs", "Creative") I get "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down." When I click on details of this Ctsi problem window I get this:

  • Can't detect Zen Micro Ph

    Hello!
I have installed my Zen Micro Photo (on WinXP) like I should, but I can't find my Zen Micro Photo in "Zen MicroPhoto Media Explorer". What is wrong? First I installed the software, than I connected the player but still is says "Deviced Connected: 0".
    This is what I installed:
    - Creative Zen MicroPhoto
    - Media Toolbox
    - Creative MediaSource
    - Creative Removable Disc ManagerMessage Edited by lonni on 0-29-2005 04:03 PM

does the micro say "docked" on it's if not then its not being dected by the computer, sometimes when this happens i open up windows media player 0 and i select the "sync" tab, windows will then check for an external hardware device (micro) and find the micro. It works everytime for me i'd give it a try. if you connect your micro and it tells you that there windows has found new hardware then the drivers arn't installed correctly.
    good luck

  • Should I wait to buy ZEN Micro Ph

I am getting a part-time job soon and want to buy the ZEN Micro, but the ZEN Micro Photo is coming out in Summer 2005, and that looks good, so should I get the ZEN Micro or wait for the Colour screen version?
P.S I had my Muvo TX 256MB for 3 weeks and is great, though I should have waited and got the 52MB version it is only 70GBP at eBuyer now.

I was in the same situation as you, wanting a Zen Micro but wondered if I should wait till the Zen Micro Photo came out. I decided that I didn't need the colour screen to show people photos and just wanted a small portable music player so I went with a Black Zen Micro and I am very happy that I did
