Broken Case Latch

I've got a broken case latch on one of the Mac pros I recently inherited at work.
I need to get in there to swap out a hard drive but the latch has come away from the mechanism that locks in the hard drive bays.
Does anyone know of any alternative way of opening the case? Or if there's a simple of way of popping the side panel out despite the latch being broken.

If you look at one of your good mac pros, you'll see that the latch operates a lever that's all the way up front and you can push it with something through one of the vent holes on the front of the computer near the optical drives to operate it.

NB305 broken battery latch

A friends old NB305 netbook has a broken battery latch, I've noticed this problem on several other Toshiba laptops. The slide button pulled out from the plastic retaining clip and has gone how knows where. I actually have a spare bottom case from a computer no longer in use but it appears the only way to replace the latch or the bottom case is to totally disassemble the entire computer, it doesn't seem possible to simply remove the bottom case and the basic parts attached to it (hard drive, etc). Is this correct? Anyone have any ideas on a better way to do it? I have looked online and haven't seen much to help other than to rebuild the computer. Can't help you on the latch, beyond recommending, if I understood the issue properly, that you buy a new case bottom, which would have the battery compartment in it.
The 12" Powerbook does not have an internal battery, so when all power is removed, the internal clock resets.

Broken lock latch

hello there. i have a broken latch mechanism. the top hooks work fine, however the bottom part of the latch mechanism is not working. looking down at the 2 slots everything seems to be fine. im not sure if it is magnet or not. i was told that i need a whole new bottom case?? which is gonna run me $200 or so. will this do the trick?

Since yesterday, I did a little more investigating, and found a link that could shed some light on this issue, as several people posted what sounded like some good suggestions:

After carefully looking at my own latch, I think I may see what the problem could be, and you might be able to fix it yourself.
There are two tiny hooks on the display part of the latch, held in place by tiny springs. There are two cavities on the bottom part of the latch that have a magnet on the bottom and two silver latches which you can see through the slots. The silver catches are to the inside of the slots, and you can just see about 3/32" of them. There is a bevel to the outside, and if you push in the button, you can see these latches move back.
When you close the lid, the magnet at the bottom of the bottom latch pulls the hooks from the display part of the latch down. The hooks slide over the bevel in the bottom latch and catch.
You should be able to see the silver latches all the way across the slot. If you just see part of them, then the thin hooks may not be able to engage them properly.
There are a couple of possibilities, both addressed in the comments on the U-Tube video. One is that the mechanism has gotten gummed up and the lower latches aren't moving freely and returning to where they need to be. The other is that the latch assembly has gotten pushed in and is caught on the sheet metal, so that the latches do not fully fill the slots. The suggestion is that you might be able to make a tool from a paperclip and reach through the slots to maneuver the assembly back into position. A dental tool might also work.
I've never been inside one of these latches, but just looking at it from the outside, this is how I think it works and maybe could be fixed.
If you don't see the silver latches at all or the magnet is missing, then the latch is likely broken and would need to be replaced. I would think the one you linked would work (the cable is for the sleep light).

Any way to fix broken screen latch?

well today i get to the basement to discover my wallstreet sitting on the desk with the plastic latch for the screen completely ripped off the case! i am dissapoined that no one told me that my lovely os 9 laptop had nearly been killed! is there any way to replace or repair the latch without having to buy new casing for the screen? the computer seems fine so far with no other apparent damage, but the plastic that linked the latch to the spring that held it on was cleanly snapped. >_<

I use super-glue whenever possible.

Satellite M series broken cases

I have a 106 and 107 and both arrived with cracks on the side of the casing to the monitor. (3-4 years ago) now within a week of each other, the hinges have completely broken and the screen has to be held up manually .
Is this a common fault? Is this repairable? We are convinced it's a defect with Toshiba products

In my opinion you should contact nearest Authorized service partner and clarify this issue. Of course it can be repaired.
To be honest it will be interesting to know which Satellite M you have exactly.

Mophie Did Not Replace Broken Case!

Just wanted to let all of you Iphone users about Mohpie.
I received a Mophie Juice Pack for the Iphone 4G for xmas from my brother. It worked for about a month then stopped charging my phone.
Since I didn't have a receipt (let's not forget it was a gift), Mophie customer support did not replace the case.
I sent them the serial number, had a photo of the case and offered to send it back so they could see that the case didn't work. All they wanted was a receipt.
Funny thing is, they could do the right thing and replace my case, but instead they'll read all of my posts to the forums instead. Clearly, customer service has a lot of time on their hands since they aren't helping customers.
Seems as though this "posting to the forums" thing is the only way to get a company's attention these days. If they don't care, make them care...

After warranty: permanent fix Yoga loose screw problem before case breaks

Yoga laptops tend to use tiny 2mm case screws and they often fall out. The screws in the rear secure the hinge and once that becomes loose the case will eventually break. Others may be interested in a permanent fix because it's mechanically impossible for these screws to stay in place: they are obviously underdimensioned both in diameter and in length.
After I had my broken case replaced by Lenovo, at my own expense, the screw in the left corner soon worked itself out again. Here's how I fixed it, drilling all the way through the existing hole, not pretty, but it has worked well over several months and it saves from regularly having the case break. (It's $280 each time. Lenovo has officialy never seen the problem, at least in my correspondance with them. It is a customer abuse issue.)
The materials for the fix run to about 25 cents: a #6 screw and a nut. I had to file away at the lid to make room for the nut. Also, the screw needs to be cut and filed. The screw cannot be completely countersunk. Extra protection is necessary at the underside of the case.
Bolting the bottom case sandwich this way holds the hinge in place.

Follow-up: as others have experienced, Lenovo does apparently not accept loose or missing screws or consequental dammage as a valid warranty claim.
Indeed, I received the message from Lenovo: "After further diagnosis, our repair engineers found damages on your computer that is not covered by the Lenovo limited warranty."
Yet, I had very clearly explained that the mechanical damage was the result of a missing screw.
Thus my extended warranty claim was easily denied, because this warranty extends the original warranty!! More wasted work.
So, I have my Yoga back, though, for almost three hundred dollars. The repair was fine. Nightmare is over. But I won't hide my feelings: I'm profoundly unhappy this treatment. Also, I'm abstaining from using the Yoga in tablet mode: it's simply not sturdy enough, the flexing of the case will lead to the same problem again.
Luckily, as a laptop it works quite well!

CAS redundancy

I’m going to implement CAS for two central locations and branches connected via WAN. It will be L3 OOB deployment, one redundant CAS pair will be located in first central location and one redundant CAS pair will be located in second central location.
Is it possible to configure two NAC servers (I mean two redundant pairs) in NAC agent for users located on branches? E.g. by preparing appropriate XML configuration file for NAC agent (how exactly two IP address has to be written in this file? ).
If first redundant pair of CAS will not be available for NAC agent, how second redundant CAS pair will be chosen by agent (automatically or manually by user)?

I don't think that's the way it will work. The NAC agent doesn't know of your CASs. It only sends out traffic to a host that you define as a discovery host every five seconds and whichever CAS is in the way of that traffic will intercept and process it. The purpose of the discovery host is to generate traffic towards your trusted network, so it could get intercepted by the CAS.
If you want a separate pair to handle your traffic when the first pair goes down, you will have to arcitecht your network in a way that the traffic from the subnets that have the broken CAS flow through the other CAS's network. How? I don't know, and depends a lot on how your network is layed out!

Broken piece chipped off of MacBook!

Hi,
I've had my MacBook for about 3 months now and it's the 3rd Mac I've owned. I've never really had a problem like this before so I'm just not sure what to do. I was simply typing an e-mail and apiece of the plastic (I assume that's plastic...) broke off on the very edge of my MacBook. It's just an edge piece about an inch and a half long where the top plastic piece meets the side and the edge of the computer. It's quite hideously noticeable. I'm not sure how I go about getting this fixed and I honestly have no clue how it happened or what caused it to happen. The nearest Apple store is quite a long way away (I'm willing to drive there in a week or so.) but is that where I would take it for a problem like this? And will I have to pay for this even though I have no clue why on earth it happened? It's a decent sized chip out of the front edge of my MacBook!
Sorry if I'm clueless... I just don't even know what you do with a problem like this and I'm somewhat worried it's going to cost a lot to repair... Any advice of any kind?

Polo - this problem has been mentioned several times on this forum. If you search "chipped or broken cases", you should find some threads. I was waiting for Leopard to be released to buy my MacBook, but when I read about this issue, I decided not to plunk down my hard earned cash. I've read that if the MB is under warranty or extended Apple care, they will replace the broken case. Good luck with that.

Are case components interchangeable between different models of Macbooks?

I have a really beat-up, but working, Macbook 2.0 and a dead, but pristine-looking, Macbook 2.1. Can I use the case components (top case, bottom case and display assembly) from the Macbook 2.1 to replace the broken case components in the Macbook 2.0, or are there enough differences to make it not fit right?
I'd love to get the older Macbook looking like new, since it works well. The newer one has a bad logic board, so it's not worth fixing.

my VC worked very well during almost 2 weeks!
Now I've found a clue:
a VC on another portal (from SDC) has the same problem.
So I restarted my whole PC -- but no improvement !
A "strange" thing I did last night:
I left VC with a model open all night
with a waiting file dialog for GML import.
This seems to be harmful....
Actually I expected the session to timeout.
But VC worked some further steps this morning:
I cancelled the import and closed the model (to be safe).
Maybe the design screen was blank then
or one step before- I don't remember exactly.

Replacement Battery Locks for iBook G3 14"

Unfortunately, the battery lock mechanism on the bottom of my iBook G3 broke and the metal screw fell out. I cannot find it! Does anyone know where I could find a replacement locking screw or complete battery lock system. My battery no longer stays connected! Please help...

The only solution is to replace the entire bottom of the case, Robert.
In the past, I have suggested that people with a broken battery latch use clear duct tape (3M makes it, and others may, too) to tape the battery in if you don't want to go to the bother and/or expense of replacing the bottom case.
In looking for the bottom case in the event that you may want to replace it, I did find them listed at PowerBookGuy.com.

Fix or replace?

I had one of the executives drop his X201. Luckily the computer still works (passes all checks via the toolbox). There are a few issues however. Obviously there are some cracks , the palm rest, the USB are and the LCD screen. All the cracks/breaks are in the casing, not on the internals.
Also, he is telling me (I've just gotten ahold of it) that it has been getting very hot since this happened.
My questions is, do you think the heat sink has separated? Should I take it apart and re-thermal glue it back together? I would of course also have to purchase at least a new palm rest, possibley more.Would re-applying the thermal glue possibley fix teh over-heating issue, or is there something bigger behind this?
The LCD case separates along the crease at the back very easily and is not rigid at all anymore.
Any suggestions on a cheap way to replace the casing?

I'd definitely have a looksee at the heatsink in case it was loosened or if the fan is stuck.
As for the LCD case, you might try a shim involving duct tape and some plastic bits for strength.

[SOLVED] XOrg fails to load Nvidia driver on startup

I'm having a fairly strange issue where XOrg is failing to load my driver when I start up my laptop. I'm using kdm, but this is causing it to fail. However, doing a simple
$sudo systemctl restart kdm
works, and everything starts up fine. When kdm is in the failed state, I see this:

Hmmmm, that doesn't seem to be the issue. I have a nvidia geforce gtx 670mx. The nvidia website does link me to the 340xx driver for that card, but downgrading to that version still has the same issue. I suspect the issue is in Xorg, since it seems to load the module, but then decides it doesn't have a driver to run for some reason.

What are the best solutions for data warehouse configuration in 10gR2

I need help on solutions to be provided to my Client for upgrading the data warehouse.
Current Configuration: Oracle database 9.2.0.8. This database contains the data warehouse and one more data mart on the same host.Sizes are respectively 6 Terabyte(retention policy of 3 years+current year) and 1 Terabyte. The ETL tool and BO Reporting tools are also hosted on the same host. This current configuration is really performing poor.
Client cannot go for a major architectural or configuration changes to its existing environment now due to some constraints.
However, they have agreed to separate out the databases on separate hosts from the ETL tools and BO objects. Also we are planning to upgrade the database to 10gR2 to attain stability, better performance and overcome current headaches.
We cannot upgrade the database to 11g as the BO is at a version 6.5 which isn't compatible with Oracle 11g. And Client cannot afford to upgrade anything else other than the database.
So, my role is very vital in providing a perfect solution towards better performance and take a successful migration of Oracle Database from one host to another (similar platform and OS) in addition to upgrade.
I have till now thought of the following:
Move the Oracle database and data mart to separate host.
The host will be the same platform, that is, HP Superdome with HP-UX 32-bit OS (we cannot change to 64-bit as ETL tool doesn't support)
Install new Oracle database 10g on the new host and move the data to it.
Exploring all new features of 10gR2 to help data warehouse, that is, SQL MODEL Clause introduction, Parallel processing, Partitioning, Data Pump, SPA to study pre and post migrations.
Also thinking of RAC to provide more better solution as our main motive is to show a tremendous performance enhancement.
I need all your help to prepare a good road map for my assignment. Please suggest.
