Broken Display? (white noise, horiz. lines) MBP

Got a problem with my 17" Core 2 Duo 2.16ghz...
When connecting an external display, I can still view the extended screen.

It works from time to time and usually tilting the screen fixes the screen back to normal but I can't do it anymore and its stuck like this:

When applying pressure or twisting the bezel slightly, I can get the image to display but as soon as I let go, it goes back:
http://imgur.com/eyLSO.jpg
What's wrong?? Loose connection somewhere? I've checked the display cable, but only the connection to the logic board. I didn't get to check inside the bezel to see if the cable connection there was solid.
I just checked and the laptop is still under warranty...going to go the apple store early tomorrow. Do you think they'll figure it out and repair it or do I have a better chance of receiving a new/refurb one?

Thanks in advance!

By all means take it in. It looks like some sort of problem with the internal display, and I expect the repair would be to replace the display as a unit. I think you are onto something with the idea of a poor or broken contact somewhere, but I don't know that they would try to fix something like that.
Most likely they would repair your Mac rather than replacing it. It might not be a bad idea to run the Apple Hardware test to see if there is anything else that might need to be fixed before the warranty expires--like maybe your hard drive.
Good luck!

  • MBP 17" report, occasional white noise from right speaker

My 2.16Ghz MBP with 100GB 7200rpm drive and 1GB memory arrived a few days ago. Since then I have been installing software, running apps, and generally putting it through it's paces. I have also added a 1GB stick from Crucial. On the whole the MBP has been great, except for a few (hopefully minor) problems:
    1. It gets quite warm on the left palmrest, and gets uncomfortably hot between the keyboard and the screen. This is just during casual use, web surfing, downloading updates etc. The case temperature is about the same as my old 667MHz TiBook after it had been at 100% CPU for several hours (encoding video). I dread to think how hot the MBP will get doing something demanding.
    2. When closed the screen appears to be slightly bent, the gap at the two front corners is about 1mm wider than the gap at the latches.
    3. I have started to get hard crashes during the boot up sequence. Specifically after the grey apple I get the greyed-out multi-language reboot message and have to reboot. If I continue trying to reboot it eventually manages to get past the grey apple and boot up normally (usually this takes 2 or 3 attempts). I suspect this is due to something I've installed, possibly some Canon software for my MP750 printer.
    4. I have now heard a white noise/static sound coming from the right speaker on 5 occasions. Three of those occasions were while booting (one of them was when I first turned the MBP on! Not a good sign). The computer boots normally, but with this strange noise! The other two times where when I was launching apps. On each occasion the noise lasted about 3-5 seconds before stopping. It's more of a hissing noise, not a mooing or a whining noise. It sounds exactly like the speakers on a vinyl record player when the needle is in between songs.
Obviously all of the issue are annoying. However I'm only REALLY concerned about item 4. Item 1 was kind of expected after doing some pre-purchase research. Item 2 is annoying in a £1800 laptop, but I can reluctantly live with it. Item 3 is frustrating but I'm sure I can 'cure' it by removing software (it only started happening after a day or two of fairly heavy use). Item 4, on the other hand, is intolerable
Anyone have any suggestions? Advice appreciated. The nearest Apple store is about an hour away, so advice other than "take it to a Mac 'genius'" would be appreciated.
    17" MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Mac OS X (10.4.6) 2GB RAM

Well, that was 15 minutes of life wasted typing out the above post that I'll never get back
I was hoping for some sort of 'expert' advice from all the users here with thousands of posts. Evidently not.
Anyway ... I have (kind of) fixed the problem myself. Resetting the power management unit almost completely solves the static noise problem. I say almost, because since resetting the PMU (about 2 weeks ago now) I have heard the static noise ONCE. This is compared to hearing it around 3 or 4 times a day prior to the PMU reset.
This at least makes me slightly more confident that this is a software/firmware glitch, rather than a hardware fault.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Display has white and grey lines and blocks crisscrossing it and touch functions are not working properly on half the screen.

I dropped my iPhone 5S and it landed flat on it's face (it was in a protective case).  Since then my touch screen display is not working properly. I have white and grey lines and/or blocks crisscrossing the screen both horizontally and vertically.  Screen responds to touch in odd random ways, but rarely does what I am trying to do.  Can't call or receive calls because can't dial or answer phone via swipe. Can't text or read incoming texts. All functions seem to be working except that I can't access them because the touch screen is acting up. If I move the phone around it randomly accesses different apps or functions, but I have no control over them once the appear on the screen.  Touching screen just causes phone to randomly choose something else to open.  What have I damaged?

We cannot possibly tell. Obviously some hardware inside. Take it in to an Apple Store. They will offer you the opportunity to swap the phone for $269 in the US. Prices vary by country.

  • White horiz lines in image after rotate

I have pasted an map image from ArcMap 10.2. The pasted image looks fine, and the scale is correctly maintained (I had previously set the scale in both programs to be the same).
However, after the image was pasted in to Visio 2010 and I rotated the image, the rotated image now has faint white lines running horizontally. In an 9x17 image within an 11x17 document there are 8 such lines, evenly spaced from the top.
Any suggestions as to how to rotate the image without incurring the horiz lines?  Or how to get rid of the lines after they appear?

    Hi,
To further help you, could you please upload a sample file created in ArcMap 10.2 to Onedrive and share the link here?
According to a preliminary inspection, white horiz lines in image appearing in drawing may be caused by compatibility of ArcMap 10.2 and Visio 2010.
We need to do more research, then tell you more detail information.

My Ipod touch displays white lines across my entire screen.  I've turned it on and off and it still hasn't cleared up.HELP!?!

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod
If you still have the problem that points to a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Display video on time line is blank (white) Error message appears

Display video on time line is blank (white) Error message appears stating display drivers are incompatible. Upgrade Display Drivers. According to computer software all drivers are current

    VDOSurger
Back in the days of Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 BadDrivers.txt file took on a life of its own after I started the following thread on that display card error.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3177024
The following is a significant excerpt from that thread in which Daksha123 went into BadDrivers.txt file and what it is all about
(It was/is my understanding the Daksha123 was writing at the time from Adobe.) Dakasha in an earlier post in that thread gave the BadDriver.txt deletion fix  which worked for me and so many others. Mine at least on a permanent basis.
    Dakaha123 wrote:
If GPU card is available on a system, PRE9 uses that card for faster and smoother playback. If the driver version installed on the mechine is not compatible with PRE9,  that driver version is stored in BadDrivers.txt file and then PRE9 runs in pure software mode to avoid any further crashes/problems due to that bad driver. It generally happens when driver promises to support some GPU capabilities but actually doesn't support those capabilities at all...
In this scenario, PRE9 shows a warning message to users that driver installed on the machine is not compatible and user should update display driver.  Generally updating to latest display driver should solve this problem: if latest driver is compatibe with PRE9, PRE9 will run in normal mode with faster and smoother playback. (As in case of Hunt & jjjbbbqqq)
Sometimes, as in case of Ron, even the latest driver shows *inconsistent* incomaptibility with PRE9. And in this case deleting "BadDrivers.txt" file should work.
If an user is observing consistent incompatibility (even after deleting "BadDrivers.txt" file the same message pops up again) with the latest driver then that driver is really a bad driver for PRE9 and with that driver PRE9 will always run in pure software mode. There is a very little probability of this kind of card and driver.
    So in summary,
if user is getting warning message : "We have detected an incompatible display driver. To get a better and faster playback performance, please update your display driver "
    1. User should try to get the latest driver for the card available on those systems,
    2. If user is getting same message again even after updating the driver, try to re-launch app after deleting BadDrivers.txt file,
    3. If even deleting “BadDrivers.txt” is not working and they are again getting same message, then that driver is really a bad driver for PRE9. PRE9 will run in pure software mode in that case.

  • Late 2011 15" MBP periodic burst of white noise

Has anyone found a solution for this problem?  Every 30 seconds or so, I hear a burst of white noise.  I'm running a late 2011 15" MBP.  My co-worker has the same problem running a 2011 13" MBP.  It doesn't seem to be due to any 3rd party software as we're both running different problems.  It also happens with nothing running.
    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Dynadock - USB Audio kaput busted broken (white noise)

not sure what has caused this, but I use a Dynadock and up until Monday the USB audio was fine, then it started making crackling white noise. I thought was temporary as was off to work but on return today is doing the same. A bit of google leads me to think this is not uncommon.
I have reinstalled Dynadock software (latest version from Toshiba site)
I have reinstalled Conexant sound drivers (latest version from Toshiba site - though don't think this is latest according to Vista update - did I mention Vista? ;) and working fine
After much searching as it does not seem to be available from the Toshiba site I found a C Media 106 Driver (which is what it was before) and installed that, and the white noise is still there.
I assume this is a Vista / Driver issue?
Which also assumes means there is no way round it without either system restore back to a previous point and hope it goes away, then select each update
or wait for a new driver but with no idea who owns it or when that might be?
Is there any alternative? I use the docking station almost permanently so this is a real pain in the rear.
Not a happy bunny! Can anyone help please? Is anyone having the same problem?
    Thanks in advance.
    t

    Hello Tim
Your posting is pretty confusing and I can not understand what you have done and wrote about all those sound drivers. In my opinion you should make clean Dynadock installation and configuration.
Disconnect the Dynadock from the system and remove all preinstalled stuff. Download Vista Dynadock Utility 2.3c properly. Follow the menu on the screen and please do not interrupt Utility installation.
Dynadock Utility will install all stuff you need and I hope you will be able to use this nice external device again. Of course I hope the sound will be OK again.

  • The bottom part of display whiter than the rest, white on right side more brownish

So I got a new replacement of my Thunderbolt Display, this time the one I got is straight (previously left side was lower than the right side), however I can see in new one that the bottom part of the display seems to be more white (you can see a slight horizontal line at the bottom) and also on the right side of the display white colour seems to be more brownish.
I have been wondering if that is acceptable for Thunderbolt monitor? Is that a backlit bleed on white? Can you see anything on the photo I have made or am I going slightly mad?:) Please help.

The display uses LED technology which means there will be some bleeding or clouding of light on dark backgrounds (mostly from the edges).  You should not have any brown color on the right side as your image shows unless perhaps you need to make some adjustments on your graphics card.  I use mine with a 2012 Mini and it has good colors.

  • White Noise showing up in images after PDF Creation

I am currently running into an issue making PDFs from InDesign CS4. Lately, our company has been getting some rather large jobs in to print and that's when this all started.
The current job is 190 pages plus cover that will be perfect bound. The client, nor I can make one large PDF from this job so we have to break it up into sections. Usually each of the PDF sections has around 20-50 pages per.
Now the issue we're running into is that on some of the pages, an image will end up with a bar or lines in it that looks like white noise. Like the image information was lost for a short period of time during the PDF creation from InDesign.
Here are two pictures of pages from separate jobs and a close up on what's going on. **Second image was from a 32 page plus cover document we have already printed.
Now in order for me to fix this issue is to just make a single page PDF of the effected pages in the document. I just wish I knew what was causing this issue so I know how to avoid it in the future. So far four jobs have been affected like this; two 32 page + cover jobs, a 64 page + cover job, and is job.
We use a Rampage Workflow system here. My PDF settings in InDesign CS4 has all compression turned off, no profiles or color conversion turned on. I keep compression turned off because it seems sometimes, vector art done in Illustrator does not seem to come out looking well when RIP'd in Rampage.
My main computer is a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 4 BG of memory running Mac OS X 10.5.8.
My current version of InDesign CS4 is 6.0.3.  If anyone has run into this problem or if anyone has any helpful hints for me, I could really use them please. If you need more information from me, I'll be happy to answer any questions.
    Thanks for all the help!
    Roc

That one has come up every now and then and has always been hardware as far as I know....  bad ram, bad cable, bad drive, bad network maybe even bad video card (?).
I see that the lines in the rotated pic are parallel with that pic, so maybe look at the machine where that pic was made and placed first, this is not definite, but you can get corruption in tiffs on machines with hardware errors and they may not be visible every time you open the file.
Although probably a bigger clue is the fact that doing singles is working better, that would make me change the ram completely, suspecting a bad module.  Also, unplug peripheral devices and see if that has any bearing.

  • Preview Printing Negative Images - White text and lines on black background

Desperate for help here. After upgrading to Tiger, I have more instances when Preview displays a PDF correctly but prints certain pages with images, such as graphs and technical figures, as negatives, that is, white text and line art on a black background. Is there any way I can fix this? Any advice would be most appreciated.

I was trying to scan from a Lexmark X5250 into Preview so that I could fax a signed document to a company.
When I chose "To be faxed", with Preview TIFF program under 10.4.6 (combo) (PPC), the document appeares in Preview as a white-on-black (negative) in Preview's open window.
A work-around seems to be that one selects "To be printed", then prints from Preview, then selects (in the lower-left corner drop-down-menu) "Fax PDF". (Unfortunately, the modem still won't hang-up properly -- is this because of my ADSL filter on the fax phone-line? ).

  • "White Noise" at Start up

Whyen I power on my imac, the screen is white and then the tiny apply appears with a progress bar circling around it. Then, the screenturns into "white noise" similar to what a TV loos like when the cable isn't working. Any ideas?

no noise at all. the screen starts going crazy. sometime lots of verticle lines that are very close together and pulsating. I just restated again and this time the verticle lines pulstaed for a minute and now the screen is grey design with a yellow verticle band going up and down in the middle of the screen and a pink band on the left side of the screen.
when I hold down the option button at start up, I get a picture of the hard drive icon on the screen with an arrow pointig towards it. it looks normal. when i click the arrow, the apple appears, then the circularl progress bar...and then the screen back to freaking out.

  • September 2011 MacBookAir4,2 1.7 GHz White noise even when sound turned off

Since new this MacAir has had a white noise like a tv not tuned in even when sound is off. Gets worse as it gets warmer. Seems to be getting worse then ever.(summer). Usually connected to a Thunderbolt Display and makes noise only when display is attached. Disconnect the display and the noise goes quite after a few minutes till display is again attached.
    Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
I think it is the Cooling Fans making the noise and the Thunderbolt connector gets hot after a few minutes.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Try checking the hard disk for errors just in case.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Verify. Of Disk Utility reports errors, click Repair. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Disk. In the Startup Disk window select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
Also, while you have Disk Utility open, Repair Disk Permissions, reboot and see if the sound anomaly still exists.

  • White noise or echo?

I am at a venue and am about to film a conference.
When i send a line back to my camera i get a ton of white noise not to mention the miles of cable trailing behind me, or...
If I use a lapel mic it picks up the sound coming out of the front of house speakers producing an echo.
So I am faced, White noise or echo?
What is the easiest to get rid of in FCP?
I have seen how you can take a sample of an audio track in Audacity to remove the noise, is this my best option after choosing the white noise?
I would prefer the lapel mic as it is a lot clearer and lack of cable behind me, but can I remove the echo in post?

    Hi
    Have You tried a program - SoundSoap™ ?
Can be of great help in some situations.
I got the signal from Audio-help-device - sort of cord encirkling the auditorium
One stereo mic down at podium and 20 m cable picked up the Audio-help-signal
*YES - I should have used a balanced line - did not.*
BUT by taking Left Channel and invert this and add to Right Channel - I got a whisper
that was usably when added to a SoundSoaped version of my Audio.
Great - NO IT WAS NOT but it was understandably = Better than nothing.
Writing out the discussion and adding this as Text lower third made it usably.
    Lot's of work though.
