Broken file connections - lots!

I am a relatively new user to LR and I moved a few hundred images on my Mac without realising that it should have been done through LR. I now have a few hundred broken image links. The tutorial seems to indicate that I must re-connect them one by one. Is this true or is there a ya I can connect multiple images in folders?

It really depends on exactly what you did. If, for example, you moved individual images from lots of dirreent folders to different folders then yes, doing image by image is likely what you have to do (though checking the "Find nearby missing photos" box might help some).
But if, OTOH, you simply moved a folder or two from one place to another (in which case the folders themselves will have the "?" mark in the Folders Panel in the Library module), then you can operate at the folder level, not individual photo level. Ctrl-click on the missing folder and choose "Find Missing Folder", a file browser window opens, use it to select the folder in its new location and Lightroom will update itself to reflect the new location.

OS 10.4.6. has broken dialup connectivity when using fast user switching

I installed OS 10.4.6. It seems to have broken dialup connectivity when using fast user switching when switching from one user to the next.
For dialup, it is extreamly annoying that I can not resume downloading a file from were it got cut off, but now, if another user wants to check their email, my download always gets broken and has to be restarted. Dialup is slow enough with out having to start from scratch even more frequently, now.
Also, in earlier versions of 10.2 or 10.3 (I don't remember which), I was able to switch users and maintain listening to a single users' iTunes.
I would like to be able to switch users and not lose either my dialup network connection or the primary users currently playing iTunes songs.
Perhaps for iTunes, one should be able to chose to mute another users' instance of iTunes, if it is currently playing.

I have not tried replicating this but might be able to provide some additional information.
We use network login accounts on our desktop computers. Fast User switching deliberately will not work for multiple network login accounts. (Remember network login accounts normally also have an associated network home directory mounted via AFP.)
Now a bit of background about volumes and mount points under Mac OS X. Under Mac OS X, any additional drive (or more accurately 'volume') is listed under the 'Volumes' folder, remember also that Mac OS X is a Unix operating system. So just as normal for Unix, the boot drive is '/' or the root level and Volumes is a folder in it. The underlying Mac OS X software automatically 'attaches' and additional volumes as sub-folders in the 'Volumes' folder (in Unix speak these are called 'Mount Points'), if you have an external hard-disc called 'Fred' then this would be represented by the following path
/Volumes/Fred
If you happen to have two volumes with the same name connected at the same time then while in the Finder they may show up with the same name, in Unix they would have different names automatically assigned to keep them separate like so
/Volumes/Fred
/Volumes/Fred 1
Now getting back to the Fast User switching problem and AFP volumes, when you login to a File Server volume it also is automatically added to the Volumes folder, so if we have a File Server volume called 'Shared' it would look like
/Volumes/Shared
With Fast User switching potentially both user accounts could be accessing the same /Volumes/Shared which means both user accounts would be talking to the server via the same File Server login, hence the possibility for one of the Fast User accounts to be using the 'wrong' permissions.

PSE7 saves edit as broken file

I have been using PSE7 for a few months. It went through a period where it wouldn't edit at all. Then it starting working. Now for the past week it will edit but it saves as a broken file. Can anyone help? I am running Windows XP and have not made any changes to my computer recently. I also have PSE3 and it won't edit either. I get the message "Adobe Photoshop 8 does not run under this version of the operating system. Please check the package minimum requirements for the operatins system lever necessary for this software". It had worked fine for three plus years, now this. Thank you.

There could be a lot of reasons for a broken thumbnail.
One suggestion is for you to check to make sure you are saving the file with a valid extension in the file name ... something like .jpg or .psd or .tif would be examples of valid extensions (of course, there are others). If the file name has an invalid extension, then you might get a broken thumbnail.
Another possible reason for this is that you have used two periods in the file name. Something like Boston.May2009.jpg is invalid.

I lost all my picture file connections

I lost all my picture file connections in Photoshop Elements 11. Have tried reconnect and managage catalogs/repair etc with no luck. I believe that updateing OS to Windows 8.1 has something to do with this. What should I do now?

How to remove the date extensions from a filename in SSIS Flat File Connection Manager dynamically at run time

I have to load data from a csv file to SQL Database. The file is placed into a directory by another program but the file name being same, has different extensions based on time of the day that it is placed in the directory. Since I know the file name
ahead of time, so, I want to strip off the date/time extension from the file name so that I can load the file using Flat File Connection Manager. I am trying to use 'variable' and 'expression editor' so that I can specify the file name dynamically. But I
don't know how to write it correctly. I have a variable 'FileLocation' that holds the folder location where the file will be placed. The file for example: MyFileName201410231230 (MyFileName always the same, but the date/time will be different)

I don't want to use ForEach Loop because the files are placed by a FTP process 3 times a day at a specific time, for ex. at 10 AM, 12 PM and 3 PM. These times are pretty much fixed. The file name is same but the extension will have this day time stamp. I
have to load each file only once for a particular reason, meaning I don't want to load the ones I already loaded. I am planning on setting up the SSIS process to load at 10:05, 12:05 and 3:05 daily. The files will be piling up in the folder. As it comes,
I load them. At some point in time, I can remove the old ones so that they won't take up space in the server. In fact, I don't have to keep the old ones at all since they are saved in a different folder anyways. I can ask the FTP process to
remove the previous one when the new one arrives. So, at any point in time, there will be one file, but that file will have different extensions every time.
I am thinking of removing the extensions before I load every time. If the file name is 'MyFileNamexxxxxxx.csv', then I want to change it to 'MyFileName.csv' and load it.

You WILL need to use it eventually because you need to iterate over each file.
Renaming is unnecessary as one way or another you will need to put a processed file away.
And having the file with the original extension intact will also help you troubleshoot.

Finding broken files

after changing computers I seem to have a bunch of broken files
I seem to bump into them when I'm syncing my 30g ipod
how can I find them?
I want to either be able to copy the contents of the list that comes up while syncing or
find all the files that are broken in my library

Well, either someone chose a different letter, or the drive letters were assigned from above by an IT department (and ordinary users are locked out of mapping new drives).
It's possible to map the same share twice, if you have the power to do so. So just remap V: to the same network share as Z: and you're good to go, for your own purposes. I'm not sure how you could set it up to cover the rest of your question (so that anyone else opening the file would not get the missing links dialog) without relinking everything yourself. I suppose it'd be scriptable.

Need help ASAP with Data Flow Task Flat File Connection

I have a Data Flow Task within a ForEach loop container. The source of the flow is ADO.NET connection and the destination is a Flat File Connection. I loop through a collection of strings in the ForEach loop. Based on the string content,
I write some data to the same destination file in each iteration overwriting the previous version.
I am running into following Errors:
[Flat File Destination [38]] Warning: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
[Flat File Destination [38]] Error: Cannot open the datafile "Example.csv".
[SSIS.Pipeline] Error: Flat File Destination failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC020200E.
I know what's happening but I don't know how to fix it. The first time through the ForEach loop, the destination file is updated. The second time is when this error pops up. I think it's because the first iteration is not closing the destination
file. How do I force a close of the file within Data Flow task or through a subsequent Script Task.
This works within a SQL 2008 package on one server but not within SQL 2012 package on a different server.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Preload file connection

I have developed my own exception class by extending Exception class. I have also created delegated methods from Exception class. Based on the severity of the error I like to write to different files and DB. The write to file methods called in the exception class is called/used in several times(more than 1000 times) in my application. As of now my write to file methods open the file befoer writing to the file. Once the error msg has been written I am closing the file. My question is is there a way I can keep the file connection open all the time. Basically I want to store the BufferedWriter object somewhere and I want to use them whenever I want without open the file again and again.

Since you seem to be "logging" stuff to a file, I'd suggest that you use either the java.util.logging package, or Log4J to do this job, as that's kinda what it's for and you're reinventing the wheel perhaps.

File connection problem + NetBeans

Hi all,
I am working on the FileBrowser application. My IDE is NetBeans. Can anybody tell me where i can find the fileSystem of the Emulator.
I checked in the C:\Documents and Settings\Lakshman\j2mewtk\2.5.2\appdb\DefaultColorPhone\filesystem
and also the folder in the program files.
I have not the found the folder names "root1/", but in the emulator it is showing the root1/. Any body had any idea about that. I am really confused.
My intention is to create the folders and view the folder contents say images, text files or anything.
Can somebody please explain about the file connection api. or else give me the link which can explain how to create folders in netbeans IDE and also able access them

You're looking in the right place. Netbeans gives you the folder in the console when the emulator starts eg:
Running with storage root C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\j2mewtk\2.5.2\appdb\temp.DefaultColorPhone245
The folder is temporary and as soon as you close the emulator the folder is deleted which may be why you can't find it. When you start the emulator again it will use a different number so next time the folder will end in 246.

I had tried to use the file connection api to somethhing like file browser on the NOKIA N73 but it dosnt work and give me that error

Using the "code" format tags will make your post much more readable. That said, there are some other problems in the aforementioned code. For example -1 signifies the end of a stream and 0 could simply mean no bytes were read.
You should also check exists() and canWrite(). It is possible to be able to read a file and not be able write to it or create a file in the same directory.

Viewing/disconnecting open file connections on Lion Server?

Has anyone found a way to view open file connections on Lion Server? With 10.6 Server Admin, you can view/disconnect open connections by protocol. I haven't been able to locate a way to do this in the new Server app or new version of Server Admin.

sudo serveradmin start afp
Suppose it would work with other services as well.
It worked for FileSharing for me.
It appears that 10.7 Lion doesn't unload properly and as it fails loading it cause it's already loaded it fails.

FCPX editing on internal or external drive for small media files with lots of layers and compositing ?

I am upgrading my mid 2012 MBP with an internal SSD. I have16 RAM. OS is Mavericks.
I edit videos using a mix of photos (imported layers via photoshop), short animations, short video clips. I do some very basic stop animation also. So each media file is not heavy (photos, pics, short videos), but I do a lot of layering and compositing in FCPX. I had a lot of delays and freezes with 5400 rpm HDD… so I decided to upgrade to SSD.
Some people have told me to edit it all on my internal SSD as the media files are not big..
Everywhere else on the web I read that all media / libraries should be on an external while I edit them. But most of these contributors are using huge video files, HD, which is not my case.
So – with small media files but lots of editing and effects / animation, should I spend the extra money on a good external 7200 rpm USB3 to edit from ? Or just use external drive for storage and not editing.
Not going for TB as I read there would not be a difference between USB3 and TB on a 7200 rpm external drive (difference is felt when using RAID, r SSD external)

I uses external SSD Thunderbolt for my all my editing stuff. I make small projects and only keeps one library at a time on my external drive. When finished I backup the library to another big external. I would strongly recommend external SSD Thunderbolt such as LaCie Rugged 256 GB or 128 GB. I use this setup with my Mac Pro late 2013. I never edit from internal. You could also go for RAID with 4 disks but that might be an overkill.

Since the MacBook Pro currently works, you should put it next to the iMac and compare the network settings for AirPort in System Preferences Network pane Advanced. Also, if you want to start off with the default network settings, you can use Location drop down menu and select +Edit Locations+. Then click the plus sign to create a new location. Set up that new location.
On System Preferences Network pane, AirPort should appear at the top of the list (in the sidebar). To change the service order, click on the gear icon and select +Set Service Order+.
Some additional tests you can try, on top of seeing if it works with (1) WEP security disabled and (2) a direct wired connection to the router.
If you get it to work with either (1) or (2), be sure to run Software Update at least two times to apply any recent updates from Apple. See if that makes any difference to using AirPort with WEP back on.
(3) Start up in Safe Mode

I don't know if any third-party software has been installed on the iMac at this point, but Safe Mode will start up with only the essential Apple extensions and processes running. See if it works any better in Safe Mode.
(4) Create a new admin user account in System Preferences Accounts pane

Log out and log in to the new account. Try connecting with AirPort in the new account.
(5) Connect the MacBook Pro to the router with a wired Ethernet connection. Make sure its Internet access works. On System Preferences Sharing pane, set it up for +Internet Sharing+ so that it is set to +Share your connection from Ethernet - To computers using AirPort+. On the iMac, try to connect to that wireless network and access the Internet.
That last one (5) may be a good one to try first. It would at least show that the iMac's AirPort is working - you can even set it up to use WEP. If you have any questions about using the +Internal Sharing+ feature, please ask.
