Broken hinge--where to turn

The other day as I was working from home, I had open my PowerBook and work-issued ThinkPad. Of course my infant daughter was more excited by the PowerBook, especially when she saw some of the Disney characters on Disney's website (come to think of it, that was a nice Steve Jobs moment--the next generation going for the Mac while watching Disney content-LOL).
Seriously, my daughter did not realize her strength (nor did I) and pushed back the screen of the PowerBook, separating the screen and keyboard parts of the PowerBook. We went to a local Apple Store last night but the employee at the Genius Bar estimated that it would cost $700-$800 to fix--ridiculous when you can get a new MacBook for slightly more. I saw one place in MacWorld mention that they repair hinges, but for peace of mind, I would like to find an independent website that talks to whether quality of service is good at that place or another. As can be expected, in the 13 years we have owned Macs, repairs have been almost nonexistent.

Hi, JK2. My condolences for your Powerbook's mishap.
When Apple repairs broken hinges on a Tibook, it does so by replacing the entire display assembly — hinges, cables, back panel, bezel, LCD, backlight and all — and usually the hinge covers. The display assembly is the Powerbook's most expensive part by far, and it's treated as a single part because the whole thing is glued together and not intended to be disassembled. The reasons for that are structural: it's more rigid that way than if it were fastened together with screws that could loosen over time. But it does make the repair of what seems, at first blush, like a small and trivially simple sort of damage into a major expense. The display would have to be totally disassembled in order to replace its three cables (which must be very thin and delicate to fit through the hinges), and the cables are very likely to be damaged in a mishap like the one your Powerbook suffered.
Some third-party repair shops may be willing to attempt a hinge repair without replacing your display altogether. There would certainly be a market for that service if soomeone could really perfect the technique to the point where no cosmetic damage would be done separating the glue joint that holds the hinges in place and the parts of the display unit together.
I've been recommending the following list of third-party repair and parts vendors in Powerbook forums for several years now, with hardly a disparaging word coming back to the Discussions about any of them to my knowledge. Check them out and see what they have to say about your problem. Phone numbers are on their web sites.

  • Satellite Pro L20 - broken hinge baseplate - where to get the parts?

    Hi there ,
First post on here so please excuse any lack of local etiquette.
My son has a Toshiba Satellite Pro L20 with a broken Hinge baseplate. I'm am calling it a baseplate as i cannot find the name of the part anywhere on the web so far.
Its obviously the metal plate on the base that the hinge attaches to.
You can even see it if you remove the battery.
Does anyone know what this part is called and where i could possibly purchase one ?
    Kind regards
    Jimmy

    Hi
I think in such case the Toshiba ASP (authorized service partner) could help you.
You have to get in contact with this ASP in your country and the technician should be able to order a compatible part for the notebook.
Here you can find all ASPs worldwide:

  • Broken hinge

BROKEN HINGE/SCREEN!!!  My last HP was two years old when the right hinge started acting funny, I babied it but to no avail it broke.  It broke on the inside as well as the outside, like came unattached inside.  I chauled it up to being used heavily and bought a new HP (because I love them).  Fast forward almost one year to the day of the new one purchase date and boom, broken again.  What is funny if that my warranty was up 3 days ago and now it breaks.  Seems like the hinge cover is fine, it is actually inside where it is broken.  I opened the screen today and it almost came completely apart.  What is the deal?

I too am suffering Toshiba`s broken hinge problem. When I called they said that they do not have a problem and never have known one  break(what liars they are) when I called them up with a broken left hinge same as you. They wanted £200 to fix it and £80 just to send back to me, as they had sent it to Germany from the UK to see if there was a problem??? I have asked my Bank to refund my money that I bought the laptop (Toshiba Satellite) under the "goods not of merchantable quality" law in the UK as I had bought it on my credit card. Toshiba certainly do have a manufacturing problem with their laptops and should recognise this fact instead of employing people to deliberately tell people that they do not have any recorded problem with their hinges. I will never buy another Toshiba product ever again as the so called Guarantee is not worth the paper it is written on....

Got it in May 2010. The left hinge is almost coming off. Called up Toshiba support and after 20Qs, was told that this is a physical damage and will not be covered. It will cost 150-250$ to get this repaired. I was not satisfied with this as the laptop has been handled well and have never seen this kind of issue with any other Dell laptops I have. When I pushed back, I was told that some supervisor will view my case and probably respond on Monday (12/20/2010)
On a hunch searched for broken hinge on the site and saw a number of posts about this problem.
I am now even more convinced that there is a manufacturing defect which Toshiba has not bothered to solve. My cynical view is that getting 150$ for each of these problem might be netting a good margin.
Have posted this to add my own experience and be counted.
Will update once I speak to the aforementioned supervisor on Monday

  • Satellite 2450 -101 Broken Hinge - Disassembly guide required

Hi does anyone know where I can get hold of a disassembly guide to replace my broken hinge? I have the part but want to make sure I strip it down correctly. Any help gratefully received.

    Hi
I would also not recommend removing and opening the notebook by yourself if you have no enough experience. You could damage some parts instead of repairing ;)
Every notebook technician could do this job for some bucks. so asks someone in your area.
By the way; I found an interesting website how replacing Satellite 2435 LCD screen. This notebook is similar to Sat 2450.

  • Broken hinges on HP Envy 15 Touchsmart j100 TX Notebook

I bought a HP Envy 15 Touchsmart j100 TX last year. Within the first few months, the right-edge of the hinges beneath the monitor loosened. I showed it to a HP Gadgets and Gizmos retailer (from where I got the laptop) and they said its just a couple of loose screws, that I can screw in and keep using. Which is how I used it for over the year.
But now the right hinge has completely come off and I submitted the laptop for repair. The warranty is expired a few months back, and the repair was estimated at INR 17000, approx USD 275, (both top cover and base need to be replaced). There was no physical damage, no crack, nothing. I am not sure how they ascertained the need to replace pretty much the whole laptop body.
I feel disheartened and cheated. If I had been given the right advise by the retailer, I could have gotten things fixed in time within warranty. Now looking at all these forums and seeing how common the broken hinges problem really is, i feel terribly stupid.
HP, how can you let such things happen to your customers? What should I do now to get my laptop fixed, other than paying atrocious money?

  • Broken hinges on a old Satellite P20

My widescreen P20 has broken hinges and I hear this is a common problem :( I took it to be fixed and they said it's not just the hinges but the inside of the lid too so it is unfixable. I need to find one for spares, at the moment I'm unable to touch the lid let alone close it!
I'm hoping if I buy the outside casing of a laptop, or just the lid, I can have my inside put into it. Does anyone know where I can get one? I have checked ebay and looked on this site but no luck so far.

    Hi
I dont think its a common problem
This problem is that the internal displays of notebooks got bigger and the notebook size smaller.
The notebook has small hinges within the screen so all the force is applied on a very small area causing the plastic cover cracks.
I have to say that this issue is not brand specific.
By the way all parts; hinges, lid, covers can be ordered from the Toshiba service partner in your country

  • HP Pavilion dv7t broken hinge

I have a HP Pavilion dv7t that has a broken hinge. It has slowly become a problem. First the screw fell out and we tried to replace it but it did not hold it tight enough. I have been very carefull with my laptop and I very rarely move it from its location in our house. Now I realize that my free support ended last week September 25th.  I wish I had looked into the problem sooner because I have been dealing with it for months.
I have seen the other posts and seen where some have tried to get this fixed and others have been sent a new laptop. What are my options at this point? Will it cost me to call support and ask what they recommend I do?
I am very disappointed in HP because I have up to now had great trust in this company and it's products.

Just got my Pavilion m6 back from HP, fixed hinges and screen at no cost to me. Laptop was out of warranty, but after a long phone conversation, HP finally decided to make it right. There are numerous people with this same issue. Let them know that. Good luck

  • Right Broken Hinge Leads to Ripped Wire

Hi, I was have a powerbook g4 titanium and the right hinge broke. Also with it, a black cable ripped. Every time I open it now it sparks from that wire. Is it the backlight power cable? If so, what do I need to replace and where can I get it?

You need to disassemble the Tibook completely to remove the display assembly from it, as shown in these instructions:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-PowerBook-G4-Titanium-DVI-Display/ 99/1
Then you need to disassemble the display assembly, which is glued together at the factory and not intended to be taken apart, in order to replace the broken hinge (and I'd replace them both if I were replacing one) and the backlight cable. See this page for guidance in doing that:
    http://home.comcast.net/~macdan/tibook_display.html
Disassembling the Tibook is a complicated process, but a competent do-it-yourself can handle it with the right tools and the iFixit instructions. Dismantling the display assembly itself is the most difficult job one can undertake on a Tibook. It carries a significant risk of causing additional damage that can make the display useless, and it will leave cosmetic scars no matter how careful one is. The alternative to dismantling the display to replace its hinges and backlight cable is to replace the entire assembly, and the price of a replacement display assembly may be low enough by now to make that the preferable alternative for most users.

  • Broken hinge on my 6-yr old Powerbook G4

Ok, I am reaching my edge of insanity. I've been working with one broken hinge like another user here, and today, the second one broke. So now my display can't stand up on its own. It's annoying to say the least. I'm not sure what to do; I've been planning to get a new laptop, but i know Apple may be planning to come out with a new line soon. The hinge broke off from t he display bottom - so there's a hole on the display, and wires are showing on one of the hinges. What should i do? buy a new display? and where? I was planning to give this laptop to a family member once i got my new one. It's not completely worthless. However, this hinge issue is driving me!

  • Install for Photoshop Elements Version 6. I lost my disk the link on the site to download the trail for elements 6 is broken. Where can i download PhotoShop Elements 6?

I lost my disk, the link on the site to download the trail for elements 6 is broken. Where can I download Photoshop Elements 6?
I was trying to install the trail because that was the only thing available and I have the product key. Can you please direct me to a link to download Adobe Photoshop Elements version 6 please.
    Thank you,
         Rob

Unfortunately, even if there were a download link it wouldn't help. PSE 6 had different serial numbers for downloads and boxed versions that were mutually incompatible, and back then you couldn't just enter a serial number into the trial. That's probably why adobe doesn't have a download available for PSe 6.

  • Broken hinge on a Macbook Air - how to fix it?

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Air which has worked perfectly all this time, but a few days back one of the hinges broke. The system still works fine, but opening the lid seems to strain the body structure. Upon opening the bottom cover, I noticed that a wire is running through the broken hinge, which seems to be getting strained when opening and closing. I'm presently in India and I took it to an authorized service store, but they said that it requires a screen replacement and I think they're just trying to "upgrade" the repair to a more expensive option!
Has anyone faced this problem before or can recommend what parts should actually be replaced? I don't want to do it myself, but I want to go into a better service center armed with details on what they have to do!
    Thanks,
    Sid

uh my phone is broken and won't turn on. so I'm getting a new phone and need to back it up but i need to unlock my passcode to backup but my phones locked sooooo idk ;/

Nothing you can do, sorry to say.  If it will not turn on there is absolutely nothing you can do now to backup what is on it.  The whole point of a backup is to have made it before disaster strikes.  Now, with a dead iPhone, all you can do is accept the loss of your data.
You will be able to re-download iTunes and App store purchases since they are tied to your AppleID, not your device.
Have you been using iCloud for backup?  If you have, then you should have a backup in iCLoud you can use to restore your replacement phone with.  iCloud backups are automatic (once every 24hrs, whenever your device is on wifi, plugged in and asleep).

  • Broken hinge on HP ENVY

I've been reading posts from others who've been having the same issues with broken hinges on the HP envy. My daughter's laptop is, of course, now out of warranty and a hinge is broken. If so many people are having the same problem, is there anything that can be done? It isn't that old, and I'd prefer not to have to buy another one.

You could  order a new hinge kit by entering your Model number at HP PartSurfer:
