Broken hinges on a old Satellite P20

My widescreen P20 has broken hinges and I hear this is a common problem :( I took it to be fixed and they said it's not just the hinges but the inside of the lid too so it is unfixable. I need to find one for spares, at the moment I'm unable to touch the lid let alone close it!
I'm hoping if I buy the outside casing of a laptop, or just the lid, I can have my inside put into it. Does anyone know where I can get one? I have checked ebay and looked on this site but no luck so far.

Hi
I dont think its a common problem
This problem is that the internal displays of notebooks got bigger and the notebook size smaller.
The notebook has small hinges within the screen so all the force is applied on a very small area causing the plastic cover cracks.
I have to say that this issue is not brand specific.
By the way all parts; hinges, lid, covers can be ordered from the Toshiba service partner in your country

Hi does anyone know where I can get hold of a disassembly guide to replace my broken hinge? I have the part but want to make sure I strip it down correctly. Any help gratefully received.

    Hi
I would also not recommend removing and opening the notebook by yourself if you have no enough experience. You could damage some parts instead of repairing ;)
Every notebook technician could do this job for some bucks. so asks someone in your area.
By the way; I found an interesting website how replacing Satellite 2435 LCD screen. This notebook is similar to Sat 2450.

  • Satellite Pro L20 - broken hinge baseplate - where to get the parts?

    Hi there ,
First post on here so please excuse any lack of local etiquette.
My son has a Toshiba Satellite Pro L20 with a broken Hinge baseplate. I'm am calling it a baseplate as i cannot find the name of the part anywhere on the web so far.
Its obviously the metal plate on the base that the hinge attaches to.
You can even see it if you remove the battery.
Does anyone know what this part is called and where i could possibly purchase one ?
    Kind regards
    Jimmy

    Hi
I think in such case the Toshiba ASP (authorized service partner) could help you.
You have to get in contact with this ASP in your country and the technician should be able to order a compatible part for the notebook.
Here you can find all ASPs worldwide:

  • Broken hinge on my 6-yr old Powerbook G4

Ok, I am reaching my edge of insanity. I've been working with one broken hinge like another user here, and today, the second one broke. So now my display can't stand up on its own. It's annoying to say the least. I'm not sure what to do; I've been planning to get a new laptop, but i know Apple may be planning to come out with a new line soon. The hinge broke off from t he display bottom - so there's a hole on the display, and wires are showing on one of the hinges. What should i do? buy a new display? and where? I was planning to give this laptop to a family member once i got my new one. It's not completely worthless. However, this hinge issue is driving me!

there are repair services, such as...

  • Broken hinge

BROKEN HINGE/SCREEN!!!  My last HP was two years old when the right hinge started acting funny, I babied it but to no avail it broke.  It broke on the inside as well as the outside, like came unattached inside.  I chauled it up to being used heavily and bought a new HP (because I love them).  Fast forward almost one year to the day of the new one purchase date and boom, broken again.  What is funny if that my warranty was up 3 days ago and now it breaks.  Seems like the hinge cover is fine, it is actually inside where it is broken.  I opened the screen today and it almost came completely apart.  What is the deal?

I too am suffering Toshiba`s broken hinge problem. When I called they said that they do not have a problem and never have known one  break(what liars they are) when I called them up with a broken left hinge same as you. They wanted £200 to fix it and £80 just to send back to me, as they had sent it to Germany from the UK to see if there was a problem??? I have asked my Bank to refund my money that I bought the laptop (Toshiba Satellite) under the "goods not of merchantable quality" law in the UK as I had bought it on my credit card. Toshiba certainly do have a manufacturing problem with their laptops and should recognise this fact instead of employing people to deliberately tell people that they do not have any recorded problem with their hinges. I will never buy another Toshiba product ever again as the so called Guarantee is not worth the paper it is written on....

Got it in May 2010. The left hinge is almost coming off. Called up Toshiba support and after 20Qs, was told that this is a physical damage and will not be covered. It will cost 150-250$ to get this repaired. I was not satisfied with this as the laptop has been handled well and have never seen this kind of issue with any other Dell laptops I have. When I pushed back, I was told that some supervisor will view my case and probably respond on Monday (12/20/2010)
On a hunch searched for broken hinge on the site and saw a number of posts about this problem.
I am now even more convinced that there is a manufacturing defect which Toshiba has not bothered to solve. My cynical view is that getting 150$ for each of these problem might be netting a good margin.
Have posted this to add my own experience and be counted.
Will update once I speak to the aforementioned supervisor on Monday

  • Satellite P20-S203 shuts down suddenly

    Hi,
In the last month my Satellite P20-S203 is not behaving so well, and unfortunately it seems the problem is a hardware one (but I'm not sure, and that's why Im writing here)
The computer just shuts down suddenly (it happened 2 or 3 times in the last 30 days); all the times it did happen I was on the web on Firefox, but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with that, and I'm also 99% sure it's not a virus, malware or anything like that, cause I formatted about 3 months ago, and nothing else behave in a strange way, the computer is not slow or anything like that.
The last two options are that the issue may be of hardware nature, or of a software one (like a conflict between installed programs and the OS); I'm more for the first one, but I'm not sure and I need help to find out... What should I do?
Also, when it suddenly shuts down, it won't turn on with the first try.
It needs like 10 or 20 times to open, like an old car that doesn't start; the first, say, 5 times I try to turn it on, it will only display the toshiba logo.
Then it passes through a screen I cannot read because it's too fast.
Then to a black screen and finally it turns off again.
With the next tries it goes a little bit more far, like it displays the windows logo, but, as that picture fades in, it stops at half of the fading process, resulting in a darker windows logo, like it's too hard for it to load the OS!!
But then it goes off again!
Then after some other tries it finally loads windows.
Any help would be highly appreciated, thank you!
    OS: Windows XP SP2

No it's ok Jayjay, I purchased this morning the right screwdriver (here in Greece these type of screws are called "French" or most internationally "torx" screws).
So I took away the cover above the fans, unscrewed the heat sink, removed the heat sink and together with that the cpu came up. I've now removed the old thermal grease and I'm ready to put the new one.
I like to mess around with things, I like to assemble and disassemble, I like to know how things work...but I also know, thanks to my personal experience, that there's no way not to make any damage when you mess around :) but that's ok with me, I' m used to it, as soon the pc will open once finished :D
Anyway, I have to admit that if I worked with a little more method now everything would be ok, like making a map of the screws, knowing where to put them back, because now two screws on the back won't mount any more (precisely the F6 screws on the back panel, where the usb, vga and parallel connectors are), and two more screws are in excess (!) If someone has the time to do it, please unscrew just these two screws (the F6 on the back) and post a photo of the screws, or just tell me the height, even if I'm sure that the problem is elsewhere.
    Goodbye

  • Broken hinge on HP ENVY

I've been reading posts from others who've been having the same issues with broken hinges on the HP envy. My daughter's laptop is, of course, now out of warranty and a hinge is broken. If so many people are having the same problem, is there anything that can be done? It isn't that old, and I'd prefer not to have to buy another one.

You could  order a new hinge kit by entering your Model number at HP PartSurfer:

  • My Satellite P20 is very slow

My P20 3ghz 512 ram is unbelievably slow. My old notebook with just 1 ghz laptop is 100x faster! Opening applications, switching between them, running more than one all make it crawl and crash. I've tried everything I can. Any suggestions please as I'm about to sell it!

    Hello Mike
Since almost two years I am owner of Satellite P20 (red one) and I am very satisfied. It is a great machine. My unit has a little bit more RAM as yours, SP2 is installed too but it runs perfectly. The start up could be a little faster but have no problems like you.
You have mentioned that you have tried everything but did you also try to reinstall the unit with recovery CD?
Over time, Windows loses stability. If you keep a computer for more than two years, at some point the best solution is to reinstall Windows from scratch.

  • Satellite P20-552 won't start

    Hello
currently operating on WinXp SvcPACK 2, and my graphics card does not work at all.. I have downloaded drivers and the computer wont start it would freeze on a black screen then restart by itself....
    Please help...
    Thanks...

    Hi
Try to start the unit using safe mode and remove preinstalled graphic card driver. Restart the unit and try it again. Check Toshiba download site and download last modified driver for this unit. My old unit was Satellite P20-303 and I have upgraded it with SP2 without any problems.
Nvidia graphic card worked perfectly all the time.

  • I dropped my Tibook. Broken hinges.

Unfortunately the other day, I dropped my flawless 4 year old Titanium Powerbook, while the display was up. The outcome was 2 broken hinges, exposing the wires. The computer still works fine, but the display needs to be leaning against something to stay upright. Also the picture sometimes cuts in and out. It doesn't look like any of the wires have been cut, but a plastic tube holding the wires seems to have been slit.
What are my options? Can this be fixed for a reasonable price? I took it to the Apple Store and they quoted me $950!!!
Is it time to just surrender and buy a Macbook Pro. Is it enough of an upgrade to spend $2000?
I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!
Titanium Book   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, JoshTown. The display is the Powerbook's most costly part by far, and the display assembly, which includes the extremely delicate display cables, is not meant to be disassembled: it's all held together with glue, not screws. When a cable, hinge, backlight, or the LCD itself goes bad, replacing the whole assembly is the remedy — and it's very expensive. Tibooks don't bounce when you drop them, so you're in for a hefty repair bill even if you buy a used display and install it yourself. You'll be very lucky to get out for less than $500-600.

  • Satellite P20 won't boot up

    Hello -
my usually reliable if slightly old satellite will not boot up.
It switches on and then after about 30 seconds the fan comes on but the screen stays blank and no boot up.
I have tried unclicking memory and hard drive etc and also disconnecting power and holding down the power on button withou any joy.
Does anyone have any magic they can share?
    Thanks in advance.

    >Does anyone have any magic they can share?
There is no magic solution for such issues
You have checked already the essential parts like memory modules.
Faulty RAM can prevent the notebook from booting but even if the HDD would be faulty, the notebook should be able to power on therefore I dont think it could be an faulty HDD.
In your case it looks like motherboard (CPU or GPU) problem.
Since the P20 is really old I would not make an effort to replace or to fix these parts because new motherboard is really expensive.

  • Power button is stuck on Satellite P20 after pressing it too hard

    Hi,
I have Satellite P20 and pressed the power button to hard and now it is stuck in there.
What happen now is when I power up it starts and the shutdown.
How can i fix the button, any one have any ideas?
    Warm regards Anders

    Hi mate,
the problem is that the button is broken because I already disassembled such machine and I know how it is installed. If I were you I would search for an technician or an authorized service partner which fixes your problem.

  • USB Ports on 3 month old Satellite C655-S5049 do not work-even after Recovery to "Out-of-Box" state

Hello - Hoping someone can help with another suggestion- it doesn't look good.
Both USB ports on my wife's 3 month old Satellite C655-S5049 are non-functional with any USB device. Flash drives, wireless mouse, and external hard drive (powered) that all work on all of my other computers, do not work in either of this laptop's USB ports.
This problem seems to have developed gradually, and became noticeable previously as non-responsiveness in the wireless mouse, which gradually became a concern, with the computer appearing to freeze or lock-up - probably because of the number of times the mouse was clicked on shortcuts and executables before something happened.
The ports are now completely "dead"- no recognition of anything inserted once the computer is up and running.
There appears to be a thermal component involved, since I was able to get the devices recognized and working for up to a minute when booting the computer with the devices in the ports after it had been off for several hours after I did the default state recovery. The flash drive and mouse were recognized, drivers loaded message, but they then went to "unplugged" before I could get the cursor moving. I was able to access the flash drive, since I did it as soon as the driver loaded, but then it disappeared ("un-plugged" itself in the driver loaded message box). I can also get them recognized from this COLD boot state when I immediately plug them in once Windows 7 (64) loads, but they quickly disappear. If I wait a few minutes before re-booting, they flash during the Windows boot, but drop-out before it completes. If I wait 3-4 hours to re-boot, they flash (are recognized) for about a minute (Windows completely loads), but then they drop out.
I tried all of the suggestions on this board (and others) before doing a Recovery to Factory Default state. I have tried it with the original version 1.20 Bios, and with the version 1.50 Bios update. All driver updates have been downloaded and installed. The laptop does occasionally lock-up at the Toshiba screen during boot, and is verrrry slow in some operations (2 hours to do the recovery discs). The only other noticeable problem (at this time) is an occasional drop-out of wireless (Atheros AR9285) connectivity, which I have been blaming on the router since it is sporadic and infrequent (not consistent with the thermal argument). These problems are all after the Factory Default State recovery operation, so my assumption is that they are hardware based.
Any suggestions for a solution? This is a standard spec Satellite C655-S5049 that I was considering adding another 2GB memory to, but now I am unsure of its' future. A laptop cooler that runs from a USB port seems counter-productive.
I am technically capable, so you can be much briefer in your response than I have been in trying to fully detail the problems. This isn't the NVidia chip, but it does bring back memories of laptops past.
    Thanks for any help,
    G

I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME MODEL. I GOT THE SERVICE

  • Satellite P20-771: Blue screen error message after OS reinstalling

    I have a laptop Satellite P20-771 / Pentium 4 3.40GHz (800/HTT) / XP Home/ 17' with nVidia Geo5700 driver.
As I had some problems with software, and I reinstalled everything using the provided CDs. Unfortunately the computer keeps malfunctioning giving me blue screen errors, that are due (this comes out when I sumbit the error to Microsoft) to device drivers. I updated everything (I hope) from the Toshiba page, but I am not an expert and I am worried that I missed something or that something has not been loaded in the right order or that the setting are incorrect.
Thank in advance for your help
    Roberto

    Hello
I have also P20 (red one) and have never had any problem after using provided recovery media. According to your posting there must be two possible reasons for blue screen:
    1. you have installed some additional software that causes bluescreen or
    2. there is some hardware component responsible for that (new memory module or maybe some external device connected to the unit)
Sorry but I dont see any other reason. On this way it is not easy to give precise answer and we can just speculate why this happen.

    Hi please help.
I have a iPad 2 , not jail broken, just 2 months old fresh from the apple store. Recently I have been directed to **** sites or a fake bad oink **** application, through various applications. From google chrome app, the photon app and safari.
I always delete cookies and cache on exit. I use photon and puffin to watch flash player videos on tv series site with links such as put locker. I heard that there is no virus for the iPad but Trojans do exist.
Pleae help, at first this was just happening with photon app now in 3 different apps, and it is directing me always to the same **** site. I don't watch **** so it's. it from cookies or whatever and my iPad has been randomly turning off and also the videos are working really badly now. Also there is a message red alert staying untrusted site and hacker may be intercepting your device. What is going on? Please help
Is their a new redirecting Trojan or virus for iPad 2. ? If yes how can I remove it and will it cause permanent damage to my device? How could I have got this virus and in 3 apps. I'm also, worried as I use my iPad to buy things online etc with my credit card. What shall I do?.. Do I restore my device? How do I do that as I cannot connect to iTunes as I do not have a computer, just my iPad. Any help appreciated thanks.

Despite the dramatic title of the article, the only mention of iOS in the body was this:
Even though malware is increasing in iOS, it still remains relatively low compared with other operating systems.

The Forbes article descibes issues with the Mac OS, of which there always have been some, though certainly far fewer than there have been on the Windows platform. It goes on to speculate :
All those iPads, iPods and iPhones? Is this going to be a juicy enough target for the virus and trojan writers to at least attempt to attack, even given the difficulty of doing so?
Again, the Forbes article doesn't mention any current viruses, trojans or malware that exist which will affect an unjailbroken iOS device.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/15/iphone-malware-kaspersky_n_1515074.html
And, the HuffPo article quotes Grebennikov thusly:
"Our experience tells us that in the near future, perhaps in a year or so, we will see the first malware targeting iOS," Nikolai Grebennikov, Kaspersky's chief technology officer, told Computing.
Again, even Kaspersky doesn't say such things exist now, merely that they might.
Speculation about what might happen in the future or articles focusing on the Mac OS or Android are not terribly relevant. So, if you do have any other citiations, preferably from a source that doesn't derive most of is revenue from the companies it reviews, that document a virus or trojan that affects an unjailbroken iOS device, I would be interested. I have not been able to find any. I thought, perhaps, as a professional, you might know of some.
    Thank you.
