Broken iMac G5 refuses to see internal HD

I have an iMac G5 1.8ghz that refuses to see the internal HD, i can boot from CD, like techtool or OS X disk and it works fine - but then when we look for any sort of HD, nothing is listed.
I have tried putting my old G4 powermac into target mode and boot off firewire but I get the 'prohibitory sign', is this because the powermac is running 10.4.8 and the imac was only running 10.3?, does the iMac need a firmware update?.
I have tried a new SATA drive internally and the system still refuses to see it, and the original one tests fine on other systems.
any help appreciated.
Richard

"i can boot from CD, like techtool"
Which one, Deluxe or Pro? If Pro which program did you run off of it?

  • MAX 2.2 refuses to see PCI-DIO-96

I am trying to install and configure PCI DIO-96. MAX 2.2 refuses to see it. I have uninstalled NI-DAQ (ver 6.9.2) with several times, both with and without the board in the computer. The device manager can see it and reports that it seems to be functioning normally. I
have also tried reinstalling MAX. Is MAX broken? Does NI-DAQ continue to stay around inspite of being removed (de-installed)? is there any other way to configure and test the DIO-96?

I have finally convinced MAX that there is a DIO-96 board in my system. However it is not by what I would call "normal" means. In MAX, I went to Tools>>NI-VISA>>VISA Options... and selected "Show all PXI/PCI devices accessable to VISA"
Now after refreshing MAX, I can see the board but only through a VISA or PXI as an intermediary.
    PXI System
    PXI Bus 0
    PXI0::16::INSTR (PCI-DIO-96)
I would rather NOT operate the board through this rather complicated looking VISA style interface
    if I can avoid it.
Have I done something wrong by installing something I don't need (like VISA)? Can I get rid of it? How?

Attempt to install Mountain Lion has highlighted need for internal disk repair. Even after "repair" ML still says disk is damaged. Attempt to restore from Time Machine back-up failed - cannot 'see' internal HD to restore to. Help! Has attempt to install ML caused these problems or just highlighted existing need to Repair Disk? Even so, why can back-up from Time Machine not see the internal drive to restore to?

Csound1, William & Sig .... thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I fear you are right - I'll need a new disk. I'm booked in at the Apple Genius Bar in Bordeaux, France on Wed ... quite a challenge as my French isn't great! The current internal disk is 500gb, does anyone know whether I can upgrade my 21.5" iMac (circa Oct-2009 vintage) to a larger size internal disk, 1Tb or even 2Tb? I already have one external 2Tb drive and another one on order (I have masses of media stored and more planned as I've just taken up photography). Seems a bit of a pain managing with only 500gb internal storage. OR, can you advise me on how I can store all my photos on my new 2Tb external drive - I can't seem to figure out how to set the path for iPhoto to see them (I can't even figure out where they are stored right now!). Same with iTunes, how do I set the default storage to the external drive (I moved everything manually and then imported them all from the new drive - it worked but seemed very convoluted). Any advice on how to manage multiple drives gratefully received. And thanks again for previous replies.

  • Broken iMac display - nothing visible - How to set up external display?

I have a 17" Core Duo 1.83 with a cracked screen. It boots but I can't see anything thru the cracks. I can access the system in Firewire Target Disk mode, which I used to wipe the HD and reinstall Leopard.
Is there any way to boot the iMac in Display Mirroring mode, so that I can set it up to use an external display? I have a 22" Dell connected via DVI and would like to use that.
I guess the ideal would be a keyboard shortcut to use at startup. I've seen on other boards that there is such a shortcut for the Macbook: Command + F4. But it doesn't work with the iMac.
I also have the Remote Control if that could be any help.
Would voice commands be an option? If so, how would I activate and use them, given that I can't see anything on the screen? I don't remember ever activating them, so I don't know if they'd be on at the moment.
My idea is to turn the iMac around with the broken screen facing the wall, then use it with the Dell monitor. Still lots of life left in the iMac with 2GB RAM, works very well with Leopard, still quite fast.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

    Okay, looking good for now!
I found a thread on Mac Forums. Link: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-desktops/184101-help-broken-imac-external -screen.html
Guy explains how he solved problem of iMac with broken screen, connected to external monitor; you need a second Mac to do this.
    I quote:
-- What u need to do is drag the menu bar from the iMac with broken screen in Sys Prefs/Displays to the Ext Display - which of course is not possible. So if you were to connect the damaged iMac by firewire to another Mac with an External display - start the damaged iMac in Target mode by holding T key after powering on. Then start the Mac with Ext Display and hold Option Key and select the damaged Mac to boot off - once that is going go into Sys Prefs/Displays and drag the menu Bar onto the External Display to make it the Primary one. Then shut it all down and connect the Ext Display to the damaged iMac and with luck you will be GO. --
I cloned my Macbook 10.5.8 system to the iMac HD and made it bootable. Seemed to be working fine. I then shut down both Macs. I connected an external display to Macbook. The Macbook and iMac were still connected via Firewire. I booted the iMac and pressed T, so it booted in TDM. After about 30 seconds I booted the Macbook and pressed Alt: the Macbook's and iMac's disks were available as boot disks. I chose the iMac's disk and waited.... Seemed a long time. But finally the external monitor came to life and I had the whole thing working, more or less.
The setup was in Extended Desktop mode, with the extended desktop on my external monitor. Luckily, a bit of the top of the iMac's screen was semi-visible, and I was able to open Display Prefs. I selected Mirrored Displays at first and then was able to work on the external display (and not thru the cracks). From here, I unchecked Mirroring and selected the external display as the main one. This worked just fine. I have a 23" full HD monitor and it looked great.
I then shut down both computers, disconnected Firewire, disconnected the monitor from the Macbook and connected it to the iMac. Then I rebooted the iMac. It booted up a lot quicker, but on startup it went back to Extended Desktop, with the iMac's display as the Main one. Again, I was able to open Monitor prefs, then clicked on Gather Windows, which put the pref window on the external monitor desktop too. Again, from there, I could make the external monitor the Main one.
Question: is there any way to make the iMac boot to where the external monitor is the Main desktop all the time and by default?
If not, maybe the worst case scenario is that I have to set display prefs to Mirrored before shutting down. Then after startup I could just make the external one the main display again.
    Many thanks David.
P.S. forgot to say that when I set the external monitor as the Main one in display prefs, it all worked okay, except that when I opened System Preferences, the window opened on the iMac's screen, not the external one.
Is there a setting to make all windows, in all apps, open on the Main display?

  • Using broken iMac as display

    Hey guys,
I have a broken iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010), it has an extensive history. First time, about last year, my Hard Drive Failed due to overheating - i took it to a local service and they fixed it however I lost all of my data. Some time after, my graphics card got broken and needed replacement as well, so i took care of that, in the meantime I got a 13" Retina MB Pro, as I needed a laptop. Finally earlier this year, the motherboard broke and i got a 16,000 Czech Crowns ($725) bill to fix it. So i just stopped using it and fully switched to my MB Pro.
Now the issue: The display is in perfect condition, no scratches and its 27 inches, i want to make use of it for video editing. The computer does not properly boot up, however it does in safe mode. everything is very slow but it works, now my question - is there a way i can get it to work?
It has a mini-display port input so i guess i'll try that first, but if that does not work, is there any other solution? I know that the display port is probably the only way as the LCD data cables go into the motherboard ect. however is there a way i could re-wire something? I'm willing to get my hands dirty just to bring that display back to life!
    Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

I thought so too, but it is still functional when i boot it up in safe mode - everything works, just slowly. Do you think the signal will be delayed or not carried at all in that case, since its transmitting it even if in safe mode?

    No.
One of you create a new AppleID and one use the existing AppleID.
But you can still use the items in each iTunes library.
Create separate computer logins for each of you.
This will give you each your own data. Contacts, calendars, photos, etc. (and your own iTunes library).

  • Please Help :( iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?

Please Help iMac 20" refuses to boot up with anymore than 1gb ram?  It was fine 4 days ago and had been working with a 1gb stick in one slot and a 2gb stick, which had replaced the orignal 1gb stick that I got it with, in the other and it had shown 3gb of ram and was working just fine with that since November?  It went to sleep briefly 4 days ago while I was waiting on a customer and I came back to try to wake it up and it never would forcing me to hard boot it.  When I did that it would only go to a black screen with a solid white light on the power indicator.  Over and over again and same thing.  I read and tried every suggestion I could possibly find in this and a few other mac forums to no avail.
I finally after reading about RAM issues etc.  I decided to power off and take out the ram sticks and try them one at a time in each slot.  So I took out the 2gb stick and did the SMC reset and it would boot up and work just fine with the 1 gb of ram.  So then I went through the same process with the 2gb stick and it would not boot up only go to a black screen with white solid light again (NOT flashing).  So then I tried the other original 1gb I had replaced with the 2gb and it worked just find like the other 1gb.  So then I tried just 1gb stick in the other ram slot (back facing one) and with just the 1gb strip it booted up and worked fine.  Tried it with the other 1gb stick and once again that one too worked just fine.  So I determined it wasn't the slot itself I thought?  I then tried the 2gb in the back slot and it would not boot only go to the black screen white solid light deal like before.  So I thought well ok it's obviously the 2gb ram must have somehow went bad (even though I have only had it since November) and I thought well I will just use the (2) 1gb sticks in each slot and then that will at least give me 2gb because only 1gb really ***** LOL.  So I proceeded to go through the same shut down process installed both sticks (I always push them to I feel them click and my fingers have a nice indention on them) reset the SMC and turned the power one and.... It would only go to the black screen with white solid light on power indicator????  I went through the same above process at least 3 times and again today a few times and I can't figure it out and I tried to search and search and I couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.....What happened?  Please help this slow Imac is killing me.  It will work with 1gb ram only nothing more?  Here are the specifics of my Imac.
It is a 20" Late 2006 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB graphics card and Ram with now only 1gb (did have 3gb) and I am running OSX Lion 10.7.5

  • IMac Can No Longer See MBP for File Sharing

    Hello all,
I have had my iMac and MBP set up for ages to see one another and share files. Worked like a charm. Now, all of a sudden, the iMac can no longer see the MBP - but - the MBP CAN see the iMac and connect. Odd??
To my knowledge, nothing has been changed on my end. File Sharing is on. Firewall is off. Both units have the latest updates from Apple and the AEBS has the latest firmware and is working pefectly.
What can I do to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks,
    Stu

    Thanks for the help!
Well, when I rebooted the MBP, it magically appeared on the iMac..so I thought all was well. However, I am now suspicious of the iMac as the culprit.
For example, I have a USB Disk connected to the AEBS - and the iMac is connected to it right now, showing the ddisk icon on the desktop. I can browse the contents.
However, when clicking on Network in the Finder, the AEBS does not appear at all! Even though I am connected to the disk. Why would this be?
I am not against trying your idea - but this new information might point us in another direction?

  • Leopard refuses to "see" iPhoto, even when it's running.

I'm having an iPhoto problem with Leopard that is different than the ones I was able to find so far. I did an upgrade install from OS 10.4 and had iPhoto 6.0.6 installed. After upgrading, iPhoto is still there, it still runs and my photos are all fine.
BUT, the features in Leopard that are supposed to use iPhoto refuse to see my library!
    - In Mail.app, when I try to open the Photo Browser while composing a message and select iPhoto, it gives me a message saying "Open iPhoto 5 or later to see photos from your iPhoto library in this list."
    - In Preferences > Screen saver, when I choose Pictures Folder and Mosaic, the preview window says "You must have an iPhoto library to run the mosaic screen saver."
    - In iTunes, when I tell it to sync photos from my iPhoto library to my 5g iPod, I get an error upon syncing that says "The iPod 'Icarus' cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-50)", but it syncs fine if I tell it to sync pictures from a folder instead.
    - In iChat, the "Share iPhoto with iChat Theater" option is always greyed out, but I can share photos from folders.
These problems occur regardless of if iPhoto is open or closed. I have about 270 photos in my library. The files are located in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library. The only iPhoto plugin I have installed is the Picasa Web Albums uploader.
    Any ideas?

I decided to install iLife '08 and updated iPhoto to 7.0. After doing that, it resolved all of those problems, but the error messages I previously had indicate that iPhoto versions below that should work.

  • IMac G5 won't regonize internal hard drives !!!

    Hi
Trying to solve this problem on a friends iMac G5 (1.8MHz). The problem started when one of his children experienced some sort of "freeze up" while using the computer and, so he says, couldn't reset it so pulled the plug. To be fair, there was also a power failure in their neighbourhood earlier that day and the computer would have been in sleep mode when this occured. But it worked for the kid at least after that.
The problem since that plug was pulled is that the iMac won't boot properly. It starts fine but stays on the Apple logo with the spinning icon indefinitely, and the fans go to full power after a minute or two. It's all pointing to a corrupt Hard Drive but I fear it may be more complicated/serious/expensive than that. We have tried FireWire Disk Mode, where we get the FW icon screen, but fails to mount on the other Macs. We have tried Data Rescue II, but it fails to see the HD. We have tried Apple Disc Utility on a Tiger Installation DVD, but it fails to see the HD. And, the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with the iMac reports no problems.
Still concerned with ultimately retrieving the data from the original 80GB drive but taking this as an opportunity to upgrade the drive we purchased a new HD (Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB 16MB SATA II 7200rpm) which another user on this forum installed successfully, but the iMac also does not see this HD.
So, I know the next test is to plug the old HD into a SATA Mac (don't have one to use at this time) just to see if this original drive has been hosed, but we are stuck as to what the problem is. I've reseated any and all cables I can, and reset PRAM and SMU.
Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated, before it gets expensive with Apple as the warranty has expired.

    iMac G5 17" 1.8MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello,
I have to disagree that this issue is not solved. The problem with the drive corruption is the primary issue, not how to format a new drive. I have the same issue repeatedly.
    iMac G5 1.6Ghz 1.25G RAM 80Gb SATA seagate, X 10.4.6
Whenever I POWER OFF the machine, the drive gets corrupted. If I leave it run or sleep it, there is no problem. I can do a restart without trouble, but if I do shutdown, I am hosed. This has happened 3 times now and so far the data recovery has been less than satisfactory. Data Rescue can get back files, but not the right names or locations.
I purchased the unit directly from Apple sale site as a refurb. Actually ordered a 1.8Ghz with superdrive, but received 1.6Ghz combo. Apple refunded me $150 if I would just keep what I got, so I eBayed my own superdrive and installed.
Reason I know it is after a power down because I left on vacation twice and relocated the computer once. Other than that, its always on. Those 3 times, drive corruption.
    ISSUE NOT SOLVED!

  • ITunes refuses to 'see' external drive

All my tunes are on an external LaCie 120GB mobile HDD as they have been for a couple of years and all has worked well. Now for some reason iTunes refuses to 'see' the iTunes Folder on this drive it doesn't even seem to see the drive at all. The drive is fine as I can double click a tune from it from the finder and it plays it in iTunes ok.
iTunes also recognises an interacts properly with my wife's iPod.
I have checked and rechecked that the iTunes/Prefs/advanced/iTunes music folder location is set to the HDD folder.
Is this a problem with the latest iTunes version?

I have stopped, started, uninstalled, reinstalled, used msconfig to stop all other processes, changed drive letter, shut down, reboot, restart with IPot connected, restart with IPot disconnected... nothing on the Apple page has been of any help. Could it be something to do with low power USB v/s high power USB? All thought I don't buy that either. My wife has an IBM T42 and it works no problems, mine IBM T43, does not work. Other USB devises do work on my T43??? Hense the point of this thread.

  • Headphones in iMac still allows sound from internal speakers?

I have a pair of headphones that I like to use for night time so I don't disturb other, they're AMGs and pretty good, so even during the day time I sometimes like to use them on well produced Vimeo productions for example as they reproduce better sound and you easily pic a lot more things up that standard iMac speakers miss.
But, it's a hassle. I have to plug them in round the back every time, and of course un-plug them to get sound again. It seems like it's a hardware thing. I would like to leave them plugged it but either have some software that will auto route e.g. YouTube video to the headphone and have everything else play from the iMac's internal speakers, or have it manual configurable from software, or even a physical splitter, but my feelings are that once the 3.5mm jack is inserted then the Mac automatically stops any sound from ever coming through.
Is there anything could do to make this happen please?

Okay, I found the solution: simply put, whenever a 3.5mm male connector is inserted into the socket (assuming it has some headphones at the end of the chord) the iMac will automatically cut the internal sound, it's a hardware thing. So the solution lies in importing/exporting sound via another system and the cheapest way is a simple in/out audio USB connector that can be had for about £2.
This then allows one to use the built in option-click action on the sound icon on the task bar at the top of the screen (if made visible in System Preferences) to toggle between the internal speakers or headphones from the OS.
