Broken iphoto

My computer was not starting up right so I installed the Mac OS X again and now my iphoto is saying it's damaged or incomplete.  What do I do?

Please read http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2638 it should have what you need. BTW there is also an iPhoto forum, if you continue to have problems with it you probably should repost there.

  • The Jump from Snow Leopard to free Mavericks OS broke my iPhoto..

I updated my macbook pro today. I jumped straight from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. It was just like installing a really big app from the app store. However, it left iPhoto in the weeds of incompatibility. It was the latest version supported by Snow leopard and compatibilty instructions from Apple said I my computer met the requirements for the updated OS. Now my iPhoto has a big white circle with a line through it indicating that this version of iPhoto is not supported on the new OS. I cannot even view my pictures folder since it is in this broken iPhoto folder. Talked to Apple iPhoto specialist and he was super cool and checked with superviser but came to the conclusion that there is no conclusion at this moment. Day 1 downloaders should always consider this risk. I was just excited after seeing todays keynote and went for it on the macbook pro. This is what we both concluded..
The suite of apps in iLife and iWork were usually purchased via physical disk or preinstalled when purchasing a Mac a couple years ago. So there is no update for these in the app store (the new way of obtaining and updating software). This was a bit of an oversight in todays launch of new products. I was instructed to wait a few days and see if there is a "patch" for this error of compatibility. I can be patient and wait for this, but if there is no patch... Then I am in a great deal of trouble with my Wife! Lol seriously, she had a bunch of our wedding, honeymoon, and newborn daughter pics on this laptop and I foolishly updated without backing up. To my credit, I did my homework and learned that it "should" leave all my content as is. It is like the IOS updates that just overlay the software and replace only os stuff. This was true. Everything is exactly where it was before, only I cannot access the pictures, open iPhoto, update iMovie (it prompts that there is an update, but takes you to the app store updates page and it is not there). Basically at this point, I have to re-buy iLife and iWork because my versions are too old for the operating system released today. This would be fine if I was informed that my paid apps would need to be re-bought, but Apple stated that my device was compatible and this would be a simple update much like any other app. I also have extended apple care protection for our products, but the apple support guy said that store support will not have a fix at this time either. I suggested to take note of this particular issue because anyone who jumps from Snow Leopard to Mavericks may likely face this issue. I suggested that they offer a patch for the mistake or offer a free iphoto download (or other native app that broke in the process).
Other than my iLife and iWork apps not making a clean jump to the new OS, I really like the features and fluidity of the system. Apple makes high-quality products and innovates. I am not upset at all. Just a bit frightened because if I lost these photos and videos, you are reading a dead mans words.
Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated.

The same thing happened to me, since I have iPhoto 9.2.3
There is some kind of "direct access" to your original photos:
    /Users/[your user name here]/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters
All pictures should be saved there, organized by year...
iPhoto will still not work but at least you can recover your photos.

  • IPhoto 6.0.2 "rebuild cache" bug

Sometime in the past view weeks, after I updated to iPhoto 6.0.2 from 6.0.1, and after I reached the 10,000 item library, iPhoto started to tell me to update my cache. I know the optionappleclick to get the "rebuild library" window when launching iPhoto, but what do I do about my thumbnails being half rebuilt, iPhoto crashes, and then all **** breaks loose on my beloved library?
    Possible fixes I'm working with:
    1) Import to iView MediaPro
    2) Import to Lightroom Beta2
    3) Use iPhoto Library Manager to activate 2 week backup
I'm leaning towards keeping iPhoto for it superior keyword management, full screen editing, and export features. Smart folders are also awesome.
Thanks for any guidance, luckily I've got a 2 week backup and can import the last months photos from the current yet broken iPhoto 6.0.2 library.
Maybe I can rebuild the cache thumbnails in smaller sections -- like each year.
    Cheers,
    Cameron

    ba21:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I feel iView MediaPro has much greater keyword and annotation capability that iPhoto. I use iVMP as my primary image management tool and use iPhoto's alias based library on the same source files that iVMP uses. I use iPhoto primarily for books and web page creation (but with iWeb replacing the Homepage I use iView to upload manually to the iDisk and create my pages online with Homepage. I feel I'm getting the best of both worlds. I've generated some tutorials to assist users in converting from a conventional iPhoto library system to an alias based system which can also be used with iView. If you already have iView it may be a viable option for you. If you don't then it would be an expensive option.

  • IPhoto library refuses to be recognized

I've moved to new iMac at work. Just transfered the iPhoto Library from the old multi-user machine (from my user window) via firewire. Put it in the pictures folder as a whole. (inside the folder looks good--things are still organized correctly)
Now when I open iPhoto with the option key held-down, I navigate to the pictures folder and iPhoto opens just a dozen or so of the +1,000 photos in the folder. It makes no sense to me where it got them, they were in the middle of all those year by year files.

I was hoping the database rebuild would trigger iPhoto to update the library to version 6. I don't know why, but it sounds like this library just hasn't been updated. Since the library structure is so different in v6, iPhoto can't read your v2 library properly.
We just need a way to trigger iPhoto to update that library. As I said before, you should get a warning that this is about to happen. The warning will indicate that once the library is updated it will be unreadable by previous versions of iPhoto.
As TD asked, is the v2 library still available on the old Mac? If so, you could move your broken iPhoto library (to the desktop or the trash) and copy over the v2 library again. Once copied to the new Mac, run BatChmod to correct permissions on the library folder. (I know it didn't make a difference before, but it could be the reason that iPhoto didn't update your library.) Then option-launch iPhoto, make sure it is pointed to open the new copy, and see if you get the warning that this library needs to be updated. If so, allow the update and see if all is well.
If you don't still have the old library available, someone very clever will need to come up with another way to trigger the update (if it is still possible). I wonder if you could do it just by moving the library around a bit. Like, move it to the desktop. Launch iPhoto and let it create a new, empty library. Quit, move the transferred library back to the Pictures folder, Option-launch and point iPhoto back to the transferred library, see if iPhoto wants to update it. A game of bait and switch.
If it's not possible to trigger the library update, you may be forced to manually create and repopulate your library. The second half of this technical artical tells how to do this while avoiding importing the thumbnails.
Edit: I just read your response to TD. It's great that you still have the old library. I suggest you try recopying, as I described above. [It's not about the library6.iPhoto file getting corrupted in the transfer, because the v2 library didn't have this file at all. The problem is the library not being updated to a v6 version when you first opened it on the new Mac.]

  • IPhoto has somehow uninstalled itself, or I've done something wrong. If  try to open iPhoto, it gives me this message: "You can't open the application "iPhoto" because it may be damaged or incomplete. I have an iMac OS X. How do I reinstall iPhoto please

iPhoto has somehow uninstalled itself, or I've done something wrong. If I try to open iPhoto, it gives me this message: "You can't open the application "iPhoto" because it may be damaged or incomplete". I have an iMac OS X. How do I reinstall iPhoto please?

What is your iPhoto version and how did you install it originally?
If it came with a new mac and Lion or Mt. Lion installed, you can delete iPhoto from the Applications folder (don't empty the Trash) and download it again from the "Purchased" tab of the App Store.
If you have bought the iLife CD, reinstall iPhoto from the installation media, after deleting it from the Application folder.
Or if your Mac came with an older MacOS X, but iLIfe preinstalled, use the system Install CDs,  see Terence Devlin's post here:  Re: My iPhoto isn't working. Error message says "you can't open the app "iPhoto" because it may be damaged or incomplete.
    Regards
    Léonie
P.S: This may not only be a problem of a broken iPhoto. What did you do, directly before this happened? Did you run a program, that will clean the Mac to save space, like "Clean My Mac" or "Mac Keeper"? These little helpers can be risky and overdo it and remove too much. Then it might be safer to reinstall your system, because other essential files might be missing now.

  • Yikes, half my photos have gone to iphoto.data....

Half my photos disappeared from my library, I found them in iphoto library DATA but how do i get them back in my library? It won't let me import them back...
    imac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    David,
Rebuilding the thumbnails is okay to do and should not cause problems. (Although I've read several threads where the database broke after a rebuild attempt. I don't know why this happens.)
If your backup is current, from right before the upgrade, I think you should try to have iPhoto open it as your library. Is it a backup of the entire iPhoto Library folder, with all pieces inside intact? (Or did you only copy folders and files inside that folder?) A complete iPhoto Library folder should work. Here's how to do it.
Make a backup of your backup Library folder, just in case. Move the current, broken iPhoto Library folder (the whole thing) outside of your Pictures Folder. Rename it (iPhoto Library Broken). Move your original backup iPhoto Library folder into the Pictures folder. Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto. You will be asked to create a new library or choose one. Click choose, and navigate it to the backup library. If the backup is a version 5 library, iPhoto will probably tell you it needs to update it. Allow it to update. Hopefully nothing goes awry again. Perhaps you should disable your Mac's sleep mode before doing this, so it doesn't try to sleep or shut down during the library update.
Old Toad has a tip about a file inside the iPhoto Library folder called "Library6.iPhoto". This is only created by version 6 of iPhoto. If your update is successful this could help in future. Keep a current copy of this file, because in the event of a power disruption while iPhoto is writing to its database, this file can get corrupted and ruin the whole library. If you keep it backed up and the database gets damaged, you can replace the broken file with the backup and restore your library without having to start over again.
Let us know if your backup is able to update and function properly. If it doesn't work, you will need to elicit the help of Old Toad or Terence Devlin.

  • Quicktime 7.5 install broken

I have tried to install 7.5 via software update and also as the standalone version. On each occasion it reaches ~70% and then says the source media is damaged and cannot continue.
I have fixed all permissions, used disk utility, run all Chron scripts and had a good old tidy up. Still broken.
I am not particularly fussed about having the update at this stage, except for the fact that a partial install seems to have broken iPhoto importing and any system JPEG export functions.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this, as I am at a loss after the usual tricks.
    JKB

A system archive and re-install was the only way I could fix this.

  • Broken Images

    Portal version: 9.0.2
Customer is building pages with imbedded images and is using images on their tabs. When the pages are displayed often the images are shown as broken. Sometimes he will get all of the images working, sometimes 1 of four, sometimes all of the images will be broken. It's a seemly random thing, but if you get one broken image out of four you will continue with one broken image for the duration of the session.
Success of image display changes from workstation to workstation. Problem appears to be a problem in both IE and Navigator.
I had customer refer to Portal Configuration Guide, 1.1.3.1 Configuring Browser Settings
    1.1.3.3 Image Settings
Please make sure that pictures/images are automatically loaded as follows:
    Internet Explorer:
Under Tools->Internet Options -> Advanced Tab
    [X] Show Pictures
    Netscape:
    Under Edit->Preferences->Advanced->
    [X] Automatically Load Images
    However, the problem still appears.
    Any ideas?

    Hello Chris,
Sounds like you either have a broken iPhoto Library or a broken page in iWeb.
    Try a test:
Create a brand new Site in iWeb with a blank page and add a picture using the Media browser in iWeb, Media > Photos. Close and re-open iWeb and see if the picture is still there.
If the picture is still there than you have a broken Site or Page and we can discuss that further.
If a new Site does not work then try creating a new iPhoto Library.
1.) Hold down the option key and launch iPhoto (You can use the option key to switch back to your old iPhoto Library when you are done testing.)
2.) Click Create new and save a new library
3.) Add a few pictures to the library
    4.) Close iPhoto
Now go back to iWeb and try adding a picture.
If it works then you have a broken iPhoto Library. Switch back to your old iPhoto Library and follow http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638 to rebuild your library. Use the last 3 check boxes in the iPhoto Rebuild window.
    Hope that helps.

  • Beware the instability of iPhoto

I have lost my iPhoto pictures twice in a fortnight simply while using iPhoto. The pictures are there ( on my "computer" so I am told) but there is no easy way for iPhoto to display them: you get the message that they are in iPhoto so iPhoto can't upload them. That's a fat lot of use if you can't see them. Apple are totally unhelpful: the first time I posted about this I got a knowall going on about directories and stuff. It all started with iPhoto 6, but Apple doesn't want to know.
I strongly advise anyone who needs pictures to beware of the proven instability of iPhoto 6.
Today I dragged my picture folders, "Originals" and "Modified" out of iPhoto Library and renamed them and reimported them into iPhoto but now I have three copies of everything. What I did is undoubtedly the wrong thing but as nowhere can anyone tell you what the right thing to do this might be a workaround if you are desperate and have nothing else to do for 2 days.

    Ewan,
I'm sorry you're having so much trouble. I think what you are experiencing is the learning curve in using a database application as opposed to a file browser.
With a file browser you keep your files in folders, then organize everything into subfolders in whatever structure you like. Then you browse through those folders to find your files. You have to decide if that picture of your dog with your kid belongs in the folder for your dog, your kid, the date it was taken, etc. To have it in each place would necessitate keeping multiple copies. You can do this yourself by using the Finder to navigate through the folders, or use an application that assists with file browsing and perhaps offers sorting and tagging. This is what you get with Adobe PhotoDeluxe. If you're happy with it, then that's good. Do what works best for you.
With a database application (iPhoto and iTunes are both examples) you import your files into the database. From that point, you no longer access those files from within their folders and subfolders. Instead, you open the application and access them from there. An advantage is that the photo of your dog with your kid can now be placed in your dog album your kid's album, your date-based album, your holiday album, etc. with no duplication of that photo eating up space on your hard drive. Plus, you have many features for tagging and sorting your photos so that you can easily find one picture or a whole group with a few clicks. This results in more power, using less storage, making iPhoto an efficient application. If you'd like to give it another try, then read on.
I have 2 tips so you can "avoid this timewasting glitch in future."
    1. Keep out of the folder called "iPhoto Library." That folder contains the database and all necessary files. iPhoto will organize them in the way it is designed to do. Browsing into that folder and its subfolders is off-limits. Any changes you make while browsing them will damage the database. Use iPhoto to access, organize, and manipulate your files - that's why you bothered to import your photos there. If you need your files outside of iPhoto, then use iPhoto to select them and export a copy. You may do with the copy whatever you like (such as upload to a website for posting on eBay); iPhoto keeps the original photo inside its library unless you delete it.
I agree that something this important should be flashed on screen in giant red letters when you first install or launch iPhoto. It is stated in iPhoto Help, but it would be difficult to read the entire Help file prior to using the application. Many computer-savvy people just know that a database gets this special treatment. [If it were on a Windows machine the database would be hidden to prevent all user access. The result? You couldn't access your photos in the event of a database failure, and you'd be SOL.] I prefer this way of doing things, although I do wish there were a warning for those of us who don't understand the rules of the database. I made this mistake, read this forum, fixed my library, and learned the lesson. I've never had a problem with my library since then. Now I'm trying to help you learn the same lesson.
    2. There is one thing that you can do to protect your library which requires going into the iPhoto Library folder. (Ironic, right?) Just inside the library folder is the file "Library6.iPhoto". This is the all-important database file. It holds your metadata: titles, comments, ratings, albums, keywords, books, and much more. When this file gets damaged you no longer have access to your photos from within iPhoto. Your photos still exist inside their folder structure, but without that file iPhoto forgets where they are. This is when you have to start over with a fresh library and import your pictures all over again. The file can get damaged by a user tampering and changing things inside the iPhoto Library folder. It can also be damaged by a power outage while iPhoto is running. You've experienced this, and it's very frustrating to say the least. A file with such huge importance should be protected.
Here's how. After you have used iPhoto and made changes to your library, Quit iPhoto. In the Finder, go just inside your iPhoto Library folder. [I keep my Finder window in column view to make this easy. Click on the Pictures folder, then iPhoto Library folder, and the contents of that folder are listed in the next column.] Click once on the file, "Library6.iPhoto," to select it. Pull down the File menu and select "Duplicate." (Or use the keyboard shortcut Command D.) This gives you a new file named "Library6 copy.iPhoto". I take the copy and move it out of the iPhoto Library folder. It doesn't matter where, as long as you remember. You could create a folder on your Desktop for it and just drag it there. Please notice that I made no change to the iPhoto Library - all I did was duplicate a file and remove the duplicate.
Now the database is backed up. If I have a power outage while using iPhoto (a common occurrence here) and the database gets corrupted, all I have to do is move the Library6 copy.iPhoto file back into the iPhoto Library folder, remove the damaged database file, and delete the word "copy" from the filename. When I launch iPhoto, everything will be intact. No starting over, rebuilding albums, etc.
Old Toad has written an automator script to make this even more convenient to do. With one click you can copy the database file and it will overwrite the previous copy automatically. Read his last paragraph and his Tip in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1012489&tstart=0 and follow the link to Toad's cellar if you wish to download his tool.
    3. (I know I said 2, so consider this a freebie.) Keep a current backup of the iPhoto Library folder. It's simple, just copy that entire folder to an external hard drive. That copies all of your photos with the database information. This protects you against hard drive failure. Step 2 only protects the database against damage, but will do nothing for you if your drive containing all the photos suddenly breaks. If you keep that backup current and you do have a database failure, all you need to do is copy the good Library6.iPhoto file from the backup into the damaged library (step 2) to get your library up and running.
"As a consumer I have no knowledge of how the technology works or what a "directory rebuild "is or blah, blah, blah."
Perhaps you're referring to the rebuild function for the iPhoto Library database. It's a way of telling iPhoto to recreate its database file, including the thumbnails that it creates. This can help repair a damaged library when the damage is minimal. What it cannot do is correct the damage caused by changing things inside the iPhoto Library folder. Once those links are broken, iPhoto has no way of knowing how to restore them.
I have no idea how my car's engine works. But I understand it's controls so that I can maintain and drive it. It's the same with computers. You don't have to be a programmer, but you do have to become familiar with maintenance and correct usage. Otherwise, the outcome is the same: fatal crash.
I have tried to describe things here in plain English. I'm no techie, either, but I have learned that with computers plain English can be imprecise, ambiguous, and get you into trouble. If used to really bug me when I would say "memory" and my hubbie would correct me with "storage". Now I appreciate the difference and know the confusion it causes when someone asking for help uses one term in place of the other. My point is that if you're not sure about something I've said here please ask me to clarify.
    Peace.

  • IPhoto Error Message - access to library?

My hard drive recently crashed and I did not have any back up (yes, yes, I know). I was lucky enough to find someone who could recover everything for me, replace my hard drive and get me running again. The only thing they didn't reinstall was iLife. So, I've reinstalled the iLife software and now iPhoto gives me an Error message that reads:
*"Some recent changes may be lost. Make sure your hard disk has enough space and that iPhoto is able to access the iPhoto Library."*
This means, anything I upload to iPhoto is completely lost and unsaved when I quit iPhoto. My hard drive absolutely has enough space. How do I check/change to make sure that iPhoto has access to my library?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions,
    - Make sure your software is entirely up to date
    - Make sure your iPhoto Library is in the standard location: Home > Pictures > iPhoto Library
    - Make sure you have enough available space on your internal HD to accommodate whatever you are importing (I'm assuming that you get this message when you import). To Check available space, click on the Finder icon (blue on blue smiley face) in the dock and look at the bottom of the window that appears.
    - You may have a broken iPhoto Library (not surprising if the hard drive failed and you had data recovered). Try creating a new iPhoto Library and adding in the pictures to see if the same error occurs:
    1.) Hold down option
    2.) Launch iPhoto
3.) Create new library and save
    4.) Import pictures
    - If the new library works then the issue is with your old library.
Switch back to your old library by holding down option and re-opening iPhoto and choosing the original library. Then follow this article to rebuild your library: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638. I would use the options for Repair permissions and Rebuild database.
If that does not resolve the issue, make a brand new folder on your desktop, and drag the iPhoto Library into that folder.
Click on the folder and go to File > Get Info.
Go down to the bottom of the Get Info window and make sure that your user name is listed with Read/Write access.
Click on the pad lock to unlock it.
Click on the cog and choose "Apply to enclosed"
Once that process completes try opening the Library again.
If that does not resolve the issue you can follow the bottom of this article to perform a manual rebuild http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638. Keep in mind this will not preserve keepsakes like Albums, slideshows, books, etc.
    Hope that helps.

  • Double clicking an event doesn't open it

My mac mini has iphoto '11 version 9.4.3. and I can't seem to open an event. When I click on it the event is highlighted in yellow and I have a little drop down arrow on the lower right that gives me the option to trash or copy it, but that's it.
On my other macs I can double click an event to see thumbnails, then double click a thumbnail to see the actual photo. I have tried to open photos in events, photo stream, last import, and I have even downloaded photos and can't open them either. I've been through just about every preference setting there is and I'm starting to think I have a broken Iphoto. Suggestions?

Oh, ha, ok! I just tried to change the mouse settings but didn't get anywhere with that. I'm using a Dynex wireless mouse and it seems the only thing I can change is the tracking and double click speed.

  • Using Airport Express on separate subnet to make isolated Guest Network?

Hi. I've done a search here, I've tried setting this up at my house but haven't figured it out yet.
Friends have Verizon FiOS service. They're using the provided modem as the ethernet router and it is handing out DHCP addresses, and for a number of reasons including their home theater, on demand use, etc., they want to keep the FiOS modem as the router, not an Apple product.
We're using an Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule both in bridge mode to distribute the wireless network and everything works fine. They'd like to add an isolated, unencrypted Guest Network. I know we can't use the Extreme's Guest tab because we're in bridge mode.
But we do have a new Airport Express. It seems like there would be a way to set up a Double NAT on a different subnet and give guest users access to the internet but not to computers, shared volumes, printers, and everything else on the primary, encrypted network.
Is there a way to do this or will every address coming from the FiOS router be on the same subnet? Are there any other horrible consequences from doing this, i.e., the primary network will still operate fine?
If the DHCP range coming from the FiOS router is 192.168.15.001 to 192.168.15.199, do I set the Airport Express IP address manually? To what?
To eliminate the possibility of duplicate IP addresses would you have the Airport Express hand out a small range of IPs on a completely different network area, like 10.0.1.1?
    Any other suggestions? Thank you.

I was trying to create a primary and guest network division after the router... such as an unusual configuration in the AEBSn after the FiOS router.
At my home I have my cable modem connected to an AEBSn, which is doing my network's routing. But I didn't set a Guest Network on this AEBSn. I am trying to set up a discrete Guest Network downline from this router. (Which would simulate my friend's installation where they're using a FiOS modem/router all in one and we want to create a discrete Guest Network after that.)
But as I guess you've been patiently trying to get through to me, Bob, whatever outlying separation you may be able to create seems to get put back together at the main router.
For example, today I connected a second AEBSn ("AEBSn Guest") to the LAN port of my primary AEBSn router. I set the AEBSn Guest to create a wireless network, and I set that to be a closed encrypted network called "Test," and I enabled unencrypted Guest Networking as usual and told the AEBSn to ignore the Double NAT error.
With this configuration I am able to get on the open Guest SSID, and internet connection is normal. Between the Guest and the primary encrypted network, printing is broken, iPhoto sharing is broken, and so on, but I still see shared volumes and can log in with authentication.
So I can see why a solution to this may have been elusive.
I don't know much about cable TV's subscription services but I took a peek at the set up pages of the Verizon FiOS router and noted there was a lot going on there. Lots of ethernet and cable IP addresses to Set Top Boxes, etc. Not sure if all this could be recreated within the administration of the Airport Extreme, but I am hesitant to risk messing up the Comcast services which are presently working well.
In terms of zooming out to the big picture... when I invite guests to share my internet service, they're usually doing email and web browsing for the weekend but at the end of their stay they want to print their boarding passes... so despite setting up a guest network I might end up giving them access to the main network anyway.
    Thanks for the help, Bob.

  • Originals in a personal folder, will they be deleted?

When I first got my mac a year and a half ago I played with iPhoto end up making it a mess. Basically I want to delete all my folders, pictures, etc. and start over. I have my original pictures on my hard driver under the following folders, "Leigh (HD name)/Jennifer/Photographs" and under here I have everything organized by other folders.
My concern is if I delete everything from iPhoto, it will delete my originals under my "Photographs" folder. If I start from scratch and delete everything, will my originals from the "Photographs" folder be deleted as well?
    Thank You
    Jennifer

The iPhoto Library folder contains 3 primary subfolders which hold the image files, and the database keeps the 3 versions linked together:
Data - contains the tiny thumbnails used by iPhoto for efficient display. These files are of no use to you outside of the iPhoto Library.
Originals - contains the original, full-sized files (images and movie files), exactly as you imported them to your library. They are always preserved. These are the files you need to save if you don't have a copy elsewhere.
NOTE: If there are alias files in this folder, then you have a referenced library, and iPhoto has been reading the files from your personal folders outside of the iPhoto Library folder.
Modified - contains the changed or edited version of a photo, including the rotated versions of photos rotated by a camera's auto-rotate feature. Also contains a jpeg version of the first frame of each movie file, for displaying in your library. In most cases these do not have to be saved. The exception is if you have invested a lot of time in editing the photos.
What do you have in iPhoto Preferences > Advanced for +"Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when importing to library"+ ? That option is selected by default, when the original image files are stored inside the iPhoto Library folder. If it has been turned off, then importing photos causes iPhoto to create an alias file inside the Originals folder.
How can I tell if the "original" file is the one in my personal folder or in the iPhoto Library folder?
If you saved photos to your personal folder system, then imported into iPhoto with the above preference turned ON, then iPhoto copied the files. That gives you one set in your library, and one outside. Unless you Trashed the files in your personal folders, then they remained there. iPhoto has no ability to delete files that aren't stored inside the iPhoto Library folder (even with a referenced library).
If the Originals folder contains alias files, then iPhoto has been reading the images directly from your personal folders.
If there's a chance that you don't have a copy of some of your iPhoto files saved outside of the Library folder, then don't trash your Library just yet. Instead, Quit iPhoto and move the iPhoto Library folder to your Desktop and rename it "iPhoto Library broken." Hold down the Option key as you launch iPhoto, select +Create Library+ and open the new empty library. Be sure to set iPhoto's Preference to +"copy files..."+ and begin importing your photos from your personal folders. Then import the Film Roll folders in the Originals folder from the broken iPhoto Library. iPhoto will probably not recognize duplicate images as duplicates, because the location and file names will probably differ. You may have to go through and trash the photos that you don't need. (Empty the iPhoto Trash in batches of 500 or less to prevent iPhoto from crashing.) Or you can check out the application [Duplicate Annihilator|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26250] and see if it can effectively cull out the copies from your library. If you do, be sure back up the library first, in case the results are unsatisfactory.

  • Prevue Doesn't Display Graphics

My copy of Preview has stopped displaying graphics. It displays PDF's just fine. It doesn't seem to matter whether I invoke Preview by opening it and dragging a graphic to it, or by double-clicking on a graphic with Preview launching itself. Such graphics don't show up in the "Open Recent" list, presumably because they were never opened. On the other hand, when attempting to open graphics files from the File menu, graphics files are still recognized as eligible for selection.
Any ideas on what's up? On a fix?
    Thanks in advance ...

    Thanks for the helpful reply.
It wasn't a permissions issue, though.
    No ...
(As is so often the case, the answer to one question simply bring s up another ...)
I had a perfectly good copy of Preview right there in my Applications Folder. Somehow, my System found a busted copy, on a different partition, left over from a nasty crash caused by a nasty Kernel Panic. I eventually discovered that it was not running the expected copy.
So ... why would the system wander off to another partition to find a different copy of Preview (and a broken iPhoto, too!) instead of the one in its own partition's Apps Folder? I thought only humans did things like that.

  • IPhoto events view broken after import, images missing

I'm running the latest iPhoto on a 10.8.2 Retina MacBook Pro and experience some strange import problems since the end of last month.
My library holds more then 26.000 images right now and whenever I try to import some new images by dragging them from Finder to the iPhoto library the images (and videos) get imported... but when I try to view the event afterwards it doesn't open and the scrolling of the complete events view is broken. The scrollbar moves but thumbnails of events don't! I'm not able to use the events view anymore after a try to open such broken event.
When I use the regular photos view (the 2nd item in the left menu) I can see and use these new images... until I quit and restart iPhoto. Afterwards many images are missing – see http://cl.ly/JrjF for an example. I can delete those broken events... but not empty the trash afterwards. It just hangs while purging all entries.
    Has anyone experienced this already?
I'm importing iPhone images uploaded to the DropBox "Camera Uploads" folder. But I can't believe it has to do with anything related to this.
I've also disabled the Photostream feature (not the shared ones) in iPhoto because I got tired of splitted events due to Photostream missing some images now and then. Maybe it has to do with that disabled feature. I'll try to reenable it after restoring my 5 days old backup (120GB) a second time now.
Thanks for your help... let's hope I can solve this.

This sounds like a damaged database.
    Try this test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
If it's not then back to your main Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
