Broken key... how to replace

my right apple-key is physically broken. It still sends the signal to the computer when i press it, but it's wobbly and will come off from time to time. by looking at it, i can see exactly what is wrong and it's only the grey-plastic part of the key that is broken. If i get a new one I believe I can stick it back on there pretty easily. My question is, if I go to Apple for a new command key will they need to replace it themselves (i.e. send my computer away for who knows how long) or can I just get it fixed on the spot. Or can I call apple and have them ship me a key? or does anyone know where I can get an individual key for cheap?

Hi
I've had one of my keycaps broken off before and had luck replacing it with parts from powerbookmedics.
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Powerbook-Keys-MacBook-Pro---Individual-Key-Keycap -p-16753.html
It may be easier to talk to someone there in order to get the keycap you need. (I could not get the "apple key" to come up in the shopping cart)
Good luck.

    Don't bother if it's not under warranty. I had the same problem. They wanted $440 for a whole new display. Bought a new Droid tablet for that price

  • Left command key has broken off - how to replace?

    So a few days ago I caught my left command key with my nail and the top half of it lifted away from the mechanism underneath. I pressed it until I heard it click back into place and then merrily continued using my computer as usual. Today I was typing and the whole thing just came off under my thumb, which is annoying to say the least.
    The biggest issue is that as I was trying to reconnect key to mechanism, the little criss-cross doohickey came off as well! I am left with a little silicon nipple which, while titilating, is not really conducive to the kind of high volume typing I'm used to!
    I really don't want to pay 40 bucks to get Apple Support to replace a single key for me - I just need to know how to do it myself. It's only one key and I could probably learn to get used to using the right one, but it would be easier if I could just click it back into place. It's not broken, the mechanism itself seems fine and the key works if I push the little nubbin, so I'm not concerned about that. I just think $40 is too much to pay someone to click a key back into place! I wasn't even doing anything out of the ordinary with it like trying to remove or replace the keys T^T
    I'm especially gutted since I just bought a new iPhone from the same Apple shop I bought my laptop like three days ago - if I'd known my laptop was gonna bust I'd have saved myself the money and spent it on repairs instead! Fml, right?
    Any help you folks can offer would be very gratefully received - if it comes down to it and I have to fork out the money then I'll do so, but I'd like to explore community options first on the off chance that someone knows how to replace the mechanism and key without having to lug my computer all the way into the city to get it fixed xD
    Thanks in advance!
    Ehryn

    It's pretty easy to do, get something thin like a credit card and run it along the bottom and sides of the keyboard and there are several bracket things that will pop the keyboard up when you pressure them. There will be a couple of cables to clip out behind it so lift it up gently.
    You should be able to find a video on youtube anyway!
    Try this site for the keyboard http://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/toshiba_qosmio_laptop_key.html
    It shouldn't be too hard to track a replacement down.

  • Anyone replace the keyboard on thier Macbook?  I have 1 broken key.

    My plus 4 year old MacBook 13" Intel Core Duo continues to work great!  The only prblem is that there is a broken key (not just the cover key) on the keyboard.  Anyone replace their keyboard?  estimated cost?  Is it worth it based upon the age (technology of this machine).
    Thank you.  Jim

    Depending on the exact model build & year MacBook/Pro, a keyboard
    may be an involved process, to replace; it could require you to replace
    the top half of the bottom section (that means the keyboard, trackpad
    and the plastic housing.) Perhaps just a key may be repaired?
    {Your tag-line below post says "MacBook Pro" - yet post says MacBook.}
    To take a look into the iFixit guides to repair a MacBook, narrow down
    the different ones to find what matches yours, can give an idea on that.
    •MacBook Pro - repair guide - iFixit:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro
    General - All portable mac repair guides:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac_Laptop
    Also you may be able to replace just the key-cap and spring under it.
    If that is the actual cause of the problem you face, you can get a new
    single key and spring parts. Parts vary depending on exact model.
    Some days ago I posted a reply to a different keyboard question and
    there are links in there that each may be worth a look... in MacBook
    area. One of those links shows other Apple Portables & parts.
    •can anyone tell me how to reattach a key...

    A company such as powerbookmedic may carry parts, pre-owned
    and otherwise. Repair companies who also have inventory may
    be worth it to contact, if you can identify precisely your MacBook.
    A possible connection there may be one like wegenermedia.com
    Perhaps some of that may be of help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    My iPhone 5 has broken and is being replaced with a new iPhone tomorrow. However, My carrier (orange) will b picking up my broken iPhone and I am unsure how to secure the content and icloud data on the broken phone. Is there a way to disable the data held on it and ensure that if it is fixed, nobody can use/see my data and access my account?

    Hi Gazpan,
    Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
    I recommend using the steps in this article to back up your iPhone if possible:
    iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
    You may also find this advice helpful for your situation:
    What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5661
    If you no longer have your iOS device
    If you're using iCloud and Find My iPhone on the device, you can erase the device remotely and remove it from your account by signing in to icloud.com/find, selecting the device, and clicking Erase. When the device has been erased, click Remove from Account.
    If you're unable to complete either of the above steps, you should change your Apple ID password. Changing your password won't remove any personal information that is cached on the device, but it will make sure that the new owner can't delete your information from iCloud.
    Cheers,
    Jeremy

  • How to replace Insert key? Need for Maya!!!

    Hi, I've just bought MBP 2.16 Ghz, 100 Gb 7200rpm, 2 Gb RAM for graphic prog-s a. animation. But there is no INSERT key on my keyboard, which I really need for Alias Maya.
    Does anybody know how to replace the INSERT key with key combinations or somehow?
    tnx
    Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.16 Ghz, 2 Gb RAM

    I think... and I use the word think loosely...
    That you can go into system prefs --> keyboard & mouse --> keyboard shortcuts and add the function you want... it can be overall for the OS, or it can be specific for the application.
    I hope that works for you.
    My external keyboard doesn't even have "insert"... so it may not be possible

  • Satellite Z830 - how to replace broken Screen?

    A careless family member has succeeded in cracking the screen of a fairly new Toshiba z830. It's broken quite badly, so I doubt it will be reparable.
    I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice on the best way to go about getting a replacement, bonus points for any information in the Melbourne area.
    Thank you

    I'd rather not pay the $459 or 459 or whatever to get the screen fixed by Toshiba. I've had 20 laptops before, I never cracked a screen like this so easily. I didn't drop the laptop nor bump it nor squeeze it, I just transported it in my hand baggage on the airplane as I always do with many previous laptops, the Z830 screen is too fragile. I really like the screen, I like its matte finish, I like the thin and light magnesium form factor of the laptop, and swobbly screen does not bother me, except the design is just much too fragile, the glass surface of the LCD is not protected as it must be. I'm the one who video-blogged this interview with a Toshiba representative about that nice design afterall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_Cq07Ee89o
    Since I don't want to pay the $500 repair fee, and since I guess Toshiba never replaces a cracked screen under warranty? I need to know if it'll work if I buy this screen: http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/model/toshiba/PORTEGE~Z830-S8302/ and I need to know exactly what screw driver I need and if there is a YouTube video and/or tutorial with detailed images and explanations so that I can hopefully safely make the screen replacement myself. And thus so that I can do it for about $100 myself instead of paying Toshiba $500 to make it.
    I guess it'd be best if Toshiba actually sold that screen and the necessary screw driver to DIY change a broken screen (loose warranty is ok then), does Toshiba sell the screen replacement and screw driver for Z830/Z835?
    I also tried http://screensurgeons.com/ and http://youtube.com/ScreenSurgeons/ but they don't seem to have made a video showing how to replace the Z830/Z835 screen yet.
    If you look at the comments on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMH0r76zdt0 about the Z830/Z835 teardown (only to replace RAM or SSD), there are several comments from users who also cracked their Z830/Z835 screen but I can't seem to find on YouTube a video showing how to replace the screen yet.
    Thanks for your help. I'd like to buy that screen replacement soon, I need this laptop screen fixed before I go on a travel on October 11th.

  • How to replace broken monitor on Satellite M40X-251?

    Hi guys !
    This laptop fell from a desk and the monitor is completely messed up. Nothing else seems to have been damaged and it still works fine on an external monitor. I'm looking for a replacement monitor and instructions on how to replace it.
    How much would a Toshiba 15.4'' widescreen TFT 1200*800 monitor cost and where could I get it?
    I can't seem to find a manual explaining how to dismantle a Toshiba M40X laptop in order to replace the monitor. Could someone give me a link to such service manual or guide me through the process?
    Thx in advance !

    Found these instructions, I believe they would work for a M40X but if anyone can confirm :
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaM35X/Satellite-M35X-display-1.htm
    And the resolution is 1280*800 not 1200*800, little mistake.

  • Need detailed how-to replace down arrow keycap

    Help please. The down arrow key got stuck. I used my fingernail to pry it and the keycap came off! Ugh. The instructions for PowerBook G4: Keycap Replacement don't do a good job of explaining how to put the plastic pieces back together and they don't look like the picture.
    Nothing looks broken, but how do I fit the 2 "scissors" back together? here's a (crummy) picture of mine keycap pieces http://i5.tinypic.com/11l1ueo.jpg
    It'd be embarrasing to have to take this to the Apple store for a keycap.

    I've never tried to do the arrow key caps, but if it's anything like the F1-2, F11-12 caps (it might not be, as they are supposed to come off for access to the guts) they just 'snap' back on. There is an ifixit.com guide that explains what I'm talking about. You might check it out before treking to the Apple store. These guides have proven invaluable for me.

    This is the page that instructs on how to remove (and replace) those F-keys.

  • How to replace a field's search help of DDIC in FPM feeder class?

    Hi All,
    I want to replace a field's search help in DDIC structure, for an example, in structure HCMT_BSP_PA_XX_R0009, the field BANKL(Bank Keys) has a search help named 'H_BANKL', I want to replace this search help with other one such as 'H_BANKEY' in the FPM feeder class CL_HRESS_PER_DETAIL, I redefined such method:
    method if_fpm_guibb_form~get_definition.
    field-symbols: <fs_field_description> like line of et_field_description.
    call method super->if_fpm_guibb_form~get_definition
    importing
    es_message = es_message
    eo_field_catalog = eo_field_catalog
    et_field_description = et_field_description
    et_action_definition = et_action_definition
    et_special_groups = et_special_groups
    ev_additional_error_info = ev_additional_error_info.
    read table et_field_description assigning <fs_field_description> with key name = 'BANKL'.
    set search help name of field 'bank key'
    if <fs_field_description> is assigned.
    <fs_field_description>-ddic_shlp_name = 'H_BANKEY'
    endif.
    endmethod.
    I test it and found the search help window was replaced indeed, but all the value of import/export parameters in the new search help was lost, it means, the value of import paramer BANKS(Bank country) and the export parameter BANKA(bank name) were lost. Only the value of BANKL itself can be returned by the new search help window. Can you give me some suggestions about how to maintain the link( value exchange) between structure HCMT_BSP_PA_XX_R0009 and dynamically defined search help 'H_BANKEY' in FPM feeder class?
    I tried to use sap memory ID but it doesn't works well.

    This question was answered at [Webdynpro Forum|how to replace a field's search help of DDIC in FPM feeder class?;:
    That is because for the import and export of DDIC Search help values to work in WDA, not in FPM layer.Feeder Class can do nothing about it.

  • How to replace hard drive and transfer everything over?

    I've looked everywhere but am unable to find a definitive guide on how to do this.
    Currently I have an early 2011 MBP that came with Snow Leopard and upgraded to Lion later. It has an HDD and I want to replace it with an SSD and transfer everything over to the SSD. Considering Lion created a Recovery partition (and there is also an EFI partition), I'm confused on how to do this the best way to basically copy my current hard drive to the new SSD.
    The best I've figured out is to connect the SSD with a SATA-USB cable, use the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant ( http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1433 ) to create a Recovery partition on the new SSD, then, booting into Recovery, install Lion on the new SSD, and then use Migration Assistant to transfer all my files over.
    Is there a simpler or better-explained way to basically copy my current hard drive over to a new SSD and then remove the HDD and use the SSD?

    How to replace or upgrade a drive in a laptop
    Step One: Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Step Two: Remove the old drive and install the new drive.  Place the old drive in an external USB enclosure.  You can buy one at OWC who is also a good vendor for drives.
    Step Three: Boot from the external drive.  Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears.  Select the icon for the external drive then click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Step Four: New Hard Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    Step Five: Clone the old drive to the new drive
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the new internal drive. Source means the old external drive.
    Step Six: Open the Startup Disk preferences and select the new internal volume.  Click on the Restart button.  You should boot from the new drive.  Eject the external drive and disconnect it from the computer.

    Keys normally stop working because of spillage of  sticky substance (coffee, sugared tea, etc.) that causes the key to no longer move as it should.
    Here is a video that shows how to replace the keyboard.

  • Satallite A100: How to replace the keycaps?

    Is there a manual on how to replace the keycaps after they come off?
    My Satallite A100, one year old, lost two keycaps a few weeks ago, and I am unable to replace them, although I have all the (little) parts. It got even worse when some more came loose recently when my little son peeled some off, using the room created by the already missing keycaps.
    Thanks!

    Hello Mike
    Reading your posting I can not understand exactly what is wrong with your keyboard but removing and putting in place keycaps (plastic with written symbol) is not problematic. You must just put it right in place and gently press it down. You will hear click and the keycap will be in the place again.
    Under this keycap is placed small plastic mechanism. It contains two small plastic parts. If they are removed from the bottom you can put them inside again. To see how it looks like remove keycap from any other key and see how is it placed.
    I have done the same now and with a little bit patience you can put it in the right position again.
