Broken Key on MacBook Keyboard

So, my Space Bar no longer works. I took the key off, and it is the receptor that does not work, not just the plastic key being broken or unclean.
(Right now I am getting through by copying a space in other text and pasting it everytime I need a space, and, and I just can't do this for much longer)
I'm figuring getting this fixed will be quite expensive, so I'm wondering on estimates?
Also, if it is indeed more than I am willing to spend, is there a way I can modify the keyboard settings on my macbook so that I can press a different key or combination of keys to get the same result as a space bar?
Or can you hook up an external keyboard to a MacBook?

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
I had to replace the keyboard on my iBookG4 thanks to a cat removing several of the keys. Apple charged for just the replacement board which was about $99.00. Well worth it in my case at least.
Yes, you can use an external wireless or USB keyboard with your MacBook.

  • No Home or End keys on MacBook keyboard?

I am now an avid student of Tom Wolsky's book 'Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop' and see that on page 35 under 'Keyboard Shortcuts' that the Home and End key are the way to go to beginning of clip ore ending of clip. Since there is no Home or End key on a MacBook Pro, is there some substitute key or key sequence that will accomplish the same result?

    Hi -
Home = Function Key (Fn) + Left Arrow
End = Function Key (Fn) + Right Arrow

  • Anyone replace the keyboard on thier Macbook?  I have 1 broken key.

My plus 4 year old MacBook 13" Intel Core Duo continues to work great!  The only prblem is that there is a broken key (not just the cover key) on the keyboard.  Anyone replace their keyboard?  estimated cost?  Is it worth it based upon the age (technology of this machine).
    Thank you.  Jim

Depending on the exact model build & year MacBook/Pro, a keyboard
may be an involved process, to replace; it could require you to replace
the top half of the bottom section (that means the keyboard, trackpad
and the plastic housing.) Perhaps just a key may be repaired?
    {Your tag-line below post says "MacBook Pro" - yet post says MacBook.}
To take a look into the iFixit guides to repair a MacBook, narrow down
the different ones to find what matches yours, can give an idea on that.

Also you may be able to replace just the key-cap and spring under it.
If that is the actual cause of the problem you face, you can get a new
single key and spring parts. Parts vary depending on exact model.
Some days ago I posted a reply to a different keyboard question and
there are links in there that each may be worth a look... in MacBook
area. One of those links shows other Apple Portables & parts.

A company such as powerbookmedic may carry parts, pre-owned
and otherwise. Repair companies who also have inventory may
be worth it to contact, if you can identify precisely your MacBook.
A possible connection there may be one like wegenermedia.com
Perhaps some of that may be of help.

I purchased a Macbook Air 11" in January 2011. It has one key on the keyboard which sticks making an irritating clicking sound that I would like to get fixed. I took it into my local iStore but they were not at all encouraging, saying they doubt that Apple warranty will cover something like this, and also that the whole keyboard would have to be replaced as they don't do individual key repairs.
This is very unreasonable to me. Firstly, the keyboard does work (is not actually broken) although the intermittent clicking sound of a single key is very irritating to me and I expect more from an Apple product than a flawed keyboard.
Any thoughts, tips and insight on this greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to conclude by saying that I did go to an Apple store and after supplying proof of purchase and verifying the warranty etc, I had my MacBook checked out by one of the technicians who (after finding that my machine was immaculate bar the sticky keyboard of course) they replaced the entire keyboard within a week.
I was so happy with the helpful and prompt service and am now so happy with my new silent keyboard!
Also wanted to add that the young guy who told me at the iStore that he doubted Apple would support this and guessed Apple likely say it was due to user damage was being a tool, and he was obviously assuming  that I had done something wrong to break my keyboard.
This was my first Mac purchase and I was delighted to find that the support is genuine and not just a rumor... I have since gone on to purchase an iPad2 will probably buy the iMac too once my trusty PC needs replacing. I was never a PC hater and got on well with windows, and was actually reluctant to make the change - but so far so good :)
    Thanks for all the help!

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

  • I have a macbook (circa 2008) version mac os x10.6.8. The 'l' key on my keyboard is hard to press down and doesn't always come up on the screen.

I've never had a problem with any of the keys on my keyboard up until now. The 'l' key has become like hard and I have to press down harder and more deliberately then I normally do. Otherwise an 'l' doesn't show up on the screen. It's not a settings or technical problem. I feel like just needs to be cleaned or something like that but I don't know. It's really frustrating whenever I'm typing especially since 'l' is a pretty common letter. Please help!

You can try this but I'm not sure if it will work http://m.wikihow.com/Temporarily-Remove-a-Key-from-a-Macbook
ALso found this video on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kh88cn_rtLo
The keyboard, trackpad and top case are an integral unit, you'll probably have to replace the top case https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Upper+Case+Replacement/515

  • The u, j, m and 7 keys on the keyboard are not functioning properly on my macbook air. Please Help!

The u, j, m and 7 keys on the keyboard are not functioning properly on my macbook air. In its place are a random assortment of keys (Ex - u = "eqrw" or "IOUY"). This randomly happened when logging back in after sleep mode. No liquid damage at all. Please help!

OK, I fixed the problem by doing a SMC (System Management Controller) reset as follows:
    1. Powered off my MacBook and removed everything connected except for the power chord.
    2. When powered off, I held "Shift" + "ctrl" + "Option" + "Power button" for 5 seconds or so until the little light on the front started to blink rapidly.
    3. Powered up my Mac, which took a little longer than usual to start and tested the "missing" keys which now works perfectly again.
Just added another couple of years usage with my aging mac :-)

  • Macbook keyboard keys "pitched" normal?

I have one of the early early unibody Macbooks. I have noticed that my keys are "pitched" to one side. It seems the splines underneath have too much tension. So, they are not really flat. My 8 key also spontaneously popped off. I was accused of catching it with my sleeve and pulling it off.
Has anyone else noticed this about their new Macbook keyboard? I have looked at 3 others and they dont seem to have the problem. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't too picky before I make a ruckus about this. Am I just in inquiring about this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
i think it is not normal that the keys are pitched (I guess, you mean "tilted"?). And it's certainly not normal that any key pops off. I would check with the dealer about it.
Whatever you do, stay calm and friendly. The person with whom you'll speak is not the guy who made the fault in the fabrication, and he will be willing to help, since a happy customer comes back.

  • Broken macbook keyboard

i was recently giving a mid 2007 black macbook and wanted to sell it, however the arrow keys on the bottom right side dont work, and getting it fixed is to expensive, ive replaced a macbook keyboard before, but i was certain it was the correct keyboard. Ive come accross a nice keyboard but it doesnt seem to be exactly matching the keys on my currently keyboard (volume button in different places, itunes play buttons added). could i still have clean repair even with a different looking keyboard?

Is the black MacBook spec in question, the same as the one
    in the post's tag-line, and is it a mid-2007 with 4GB installed?
After happening across your other RAM related discussion,
I did a little checking, & wonder if you've identified it proper.
A Late-2007 black (or white) MacBook 3.1 can use a bit more
RAM than a Mid-2007 black MacBook 2.1 that tops at 3GB...
{There were a few that could see more RAM than low spec if
    a later OS X were installed; not sure if MB2.1 is one of them.}
•Identify your Mac - Lookup your unit by Apple model or serial number:
    https://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
Just curious, a difference in identification may affect the
keyboard (top half, bottom case) parts. Have you looked
into http://ifixit.com to see keyboard/trackpad guides?
Hopefully you can get it together & working fair.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My 3 apple products, an imac, a macbook air and a macbook lost their contact with their external hard disks. They were LaCie make. And every time I turn my laptops, I find the positions of the keys on their  keyboards changed.  Why is Apple silent?

After the latest apple IOS upgrade my 3 apple products, an imac, a macbook air and a macbook, lost their contact with their external hard disks. They were LaCie make. And every time I turn my laptops, I find the positions of the keys on their  keyboards changed.  Why is Apple silent? There are so many people complaining about this issue and expecting Apple to correct this issue that they have created.

Probably because it's not an Apple issue. I have Lacie EHD's connected to my MBAir and iMac, all work perfectly on Mavericks. In addition I don't have any keyboard issues on any of my Apple products. BTW IOS is only for IOS devices such as iPads, iPods and iPhones, Macs use OS X. The two OS's are seperate  products designed to run on seperate products.

  • How to remove keys from the keyboard on macbook pro 2011

I wonder how i remove the keys on macbook pro 2011 model?

    Hi x,
Here are some links. None of them show your exact model, but keys have been the same/very similar for some time now. You may even want to google and check youtube to see if newer guides are available. If it's just a few keys, the "genius" bar at an Apple Store would probably help you with it.

  • Broken laptop input mouse & keyboard [xps15z] [post Syu]

    Problems:
-laptop's (dell xps 15z) keyboard and mouse not working
    -X broken
I am really stumped here and looking for any help / direction. I am running out of questions to ask, and would appreciate any feedback.
    What I have tried:
    -creating a new modprobe.conf,
    -merging rc.conf.pacnew,
-downgrading to my previous udev, mkinitcpio, and module-init-tools, using the packages found in cache. remade init with
    mkinitcpio -p linux
and keyboard and mouse still did not work
    -merged locale.conf.pacnew
    -merged pacman.conf.pacnew
-traversed almost all of the logs multiple times (have not found a silver bullet, but not positive on what Im looking for..)
Below I have included some notes, my relevant (dates) pacman.log, and what I pulled from dmesg that seemed related to me.
    //notes
    -usb ports work
-when i hit keys on the keyboard while at the console username prompt, nothing types, but if laptop is a dark place, the keys back-lights actually do light up...

I'm glad that fixed your keyboard.
Good idea about the wiki page. If/when I have time I will add something. Feel free to do so if you have some.
I've not had the computer for long, however the core install boots and works fine, but after updating the keyboard and mouse become unresponsive, so unfortunately from my perspective, one of the updates in the past 4 or 5 months broke it! However, though I've not tried any combinations of boot parameters, the vast majority of live CDs won't even boot without acpi=off (or presumably, only acpi=noirq is actually needed, looking at your tests) so it doesn't look to be Arch specific.
For your X problems, are you using a DE or WM, and how are you logging in? If you can disable the login manager (if present) and start an X session with startx, with say only exec xterm in your ~/.xinitrc that might help pinpoint the issue. If that works, it will unlikely be an X issue, more one of your DE/WM.

  • Keys on external keyboard not working

    Hi folks,
I recently purchased a USB keyboard (extended numeric) for my MacBook Pro, and all has been good until this morning, when the V and Y keys (both lower and upper case) have stopped working, i.e. when I try typing with them, nothing appears. With the V key, the Edit button flashes, and nothing happens (that I can notice, anyway) when I try the Y key. (Thankfully my macbook keyboard is all okay.)
I wondered if the keyboard might have shorted, but all other keys are working okay.
    Any thoughts?

Yes, the built in keyboard works perfectly well, both with the external keyboard connected and disconnected. I'm hoping the external one isn't beyond help... it's such a pain to have to replace!
