Broken key on new macbook pro (late 2008)?
I just got my brand new macbook pro and noticed that my right shift key is broken. It is a bit hard to explain, but basically I can only press down the bottom right corner of the key. The top left corner of the key will not push down no matter how hard I push down on it and feels "stuck". Because of this, whenever I am using the shift key on the right side of the keyboard I have to make sure that I press the bottom right part of the key in order for the notebook to detect it. Quite annoying. Is anyone else having the same issue, and is there any work around for this? I am currently in South Korea for an extended period of time and am not really sure I want to take it in to the apple authorized repair centers here, because I have heard some bad stories about them.
****, worst case scenario.
In that case, would I have to get it fixed right away or can I just wait until I get back to the california around february/march? Or in other words, would they still fix it for me even though I have had the laptop for about 6 months or do I have to bring it in right away. Because I am out of the country I would prefer to wait until I can take it to an apple store back in the states rather than dealing with it in another country, specifically because I have heard some bad stories about dealing with the authorized care centers here. I just don't want to wait 6 months and have them say that they can't do anything about it because I have already had the laptop for half a year.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Can I use my old Macbook Pro Ram in the New Macbook Pro (late 2008)
I have 2, 2 gig DDR2 sticks of ram in my macbook pro. I wanted to know if they would work in the new macbook pro (late 2008)? I know the new one uses DDR3 - What would be the downside of using DDR2 in a DDR3 macbook? Would the graphics cards work to their potential? Thanks!
No. The DDR2 RAM in your older computer is not the same as the DDR3 RAM used in the new ones. There are significant differences between them not the least of which is pin count.

Wireless instability in new Macbook pro (late 2008) (uniblock model)
I have been experiencing the same kind of instability problems with the wireless connections of the new Macbook pro (late 2008 "unibody") reported in other posts in this section.
My network configuration includes a Time Capsule base station(802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)) and an Airport Express(802.11n) that extends the network and is used mostly for wireless music feeding into sound equipment.
I have been using this network for months with my old MBP (Core Duo,15.4', 2.16 MHz) and it works perfectly. From that notebook iTunes recognizes the Airport express immediately and feeds music without any problems.
I transferred all my configuration to the new Macbook Pro (late 2008 - which is indeed a beautiful piece of hardware, exquisitely designed) and everything works perfectly... except the wireless connection.
It behaves quite unstably. Usually, it is necessary to turn airport off and on several times in the computer to get iTunes to connect to the Airport Express. Even then, the music stream suffers from frequent interruptions and suddenly gets in trouble and looses connection.
While iTunes is trying to reconnect to the Airport Express, usually the internet connection fails altogether, making it necessary to turn airport off and on in the notebook to restart all the wireless connections.
All along, the old MBP wireless connections behave perfectly, proving the problem is in the new Macbook (late 2008) and not in the network.
I have loaded all the firmware and software updates available in the Apple site, and the behaviour improved somewhat with the EFI firmware update 1.6 and SMC firmware update 1.2. I also reset the SMC.
However, the problem is still there and appears now and then seemingly without a pattern.Folks: *there may be a power/signal issue going on here.* I had a similar problem of my network connection dragging to practically nothing when hooking up my LaCie external drive to the USB port. Please see my post below (link and text)
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9914924#9914924
Folks:
Apple needs to get on this issue fast; after turning off my N mode on my WRT160N Linksys Router, I got my packet speed back up to where it should be... HOWEVER I noticed another problem.
When I hooked up my LaCie external drive (connected via USB), my packets on PING practically stall to nothing. I then eject the external USB drive and re-ping and I get acceptable packet speeds; I re-connect the LaCie external drive to the USB port and my PING crawls to nothing.
There is CLEARLY a correlation between the network speed crawling to nothing while hooking up an external drive; possibly a power sink and/or signal interference on the Airport when hooking up a USB device? (or perhaps even Firewire 800 too?)
I sure hope Apple is reading this one, because this could be a MAJOR issue that needs to be fixed ASAP. -
How to restore Firmware on New MacBook Pro late 2008?
Hello, when I migrated contents from my old MBP to the New MBP it also transferred some of the utility software, and I accidentally activated FanControl and that seemed to permanently altered the fan setting of the new MBP.
How can I reset the firmware of the new MBP, so I can reset the fan temp/speed setting to default? Deleting FanControl utility does not seem to work.
A quick call to Apple support told me to just re-install the OS, and that sets everything back to the factory state, including the fan speed. Is this true?
I'm looking for the "Firmware Restoration CD" in the apple site but there is nothing newer after April. I suppose this 1.7 version will not work on ours.Hi volume244;
If Apple told you to reinstall to reset, why do you think we would know better then they do?
Personally, if it were mine I would take it back to Apple and ask them to fix it.

MacBook Pro (late 2008) & Vista Biz 64bit
Hi:
Just got a new Macbook Pro (late 2008) and wanted to know if Windows Vista 64bit will run under Boot Camp?
Thanks,
Marchttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846 hasn't been updated, and yes it seems to work... with some minor issues (when or where are the latest BootCamp Apple setup services and drivers?) for new logicboard and chipset... so you will see errors and may have to do a "repair reinstall" but it works.

Flashing Question mark: New hard drive not working Macbook Pro late 2008
After following several peoples advice on this forum I decided to upgrade my Macbook Pro late 2008 with a Seagate (1TB) Solid State Hybrid Drive 2.5 inch.
Heres the device.
http://www.morecomputers.com/spec.aspx?pn=ST1000LM014
After creating a mountable boot on a External hard drive with Mavericks install I removed the current hard drive and replaced with the new seagate drive. However it didn't seem to recognize the external hard drive (it is quite old but works perfectly) and went to a flashing grey question mark screen and wouldnt do anything else. Ive tried holding down command-r and option-r but I get nothing. Its just the same flashing question mark. I have done this several times and the same result.
I put the old drive back in and it works fine.
I am trying to work out is the problem with the mountable external hard drive OR is it the hard drive is not compatible with my computer?
Appreciate your help
GarySorry I think you may be confused.
I am trying to install the new Seagate hard drive to my mac (not as an external hard drive).
I replace the macbook pro hard drive with the seagate drive:
http://www.morecomputers.com/spec.aspx?pn=ST1000LM014
I then started up the machine with a usb external hard drive with a boot copy of mavericks on it. However, it just displayed a flashing question mark and wouldnt start booting the osx.
I am trying to work out is the problem with the mountable external hard drive OR is it the hard drive is not compatible with my computer? Im guessing it must be hard drive. Would it be better to use a USB pen drive as the external hard drive is quite old?
Does anyone know what the problem could be as the hard drive is brand new.
Appreciate your help
Thanks, Gary -
i did hold the ALT cmand r key but i cant see the globe i dont know how i can fix my macbook pro late 2008 can any 1 plzzzz help me im very upsate but i live PAKISTAN in here i cant find os x lion disk i dont know what to do if i get the os x lion usb
That does not work on model year older then 2010 and really doesn't work on any older then late 2011 models.
You will need a set of original system dvd disc thjat are always sypplied with every mac sold before Lion came out. Systems older then late release early 2011 models.
If you don't have them you kcan order a replacement set from apple by calling them. Have the serial number of you mac handy. -
Can I run my MacBook Pro Late 2008 without battery forever? Is it bad in long term or anything? Does it make the system less stable?
My battery got swollen (and I unfortunately noticed it very late and might have be running with it for months, which potentially explains all the crashes everyday and the trackpad not working anymore, the Apple test also says I have a bar of ram broken...) and I had to remove it because the back pannel did not close anymore... Can I still use my MBP normally forever that way? I was planning on buying a new mac anyway but maybe waiting for the next iMac upgrade in the year... Should I wait?Other than the system shutting down instantly if you have a power outage, whcih could corrupt the OS. Nothing else bad will happen.

Trackpad non responding for wake up on macbook pro late 2008
i mentioned a problem with my macbook pro late 2008 since upgrading to 10.8. while clicking the trackpad to wake up my macbook air 2011 everything works fine, but on my macbook pro late 2008 it wouldn't. i have to click either the spacebar or any other key on the keyboard. otherwise no issues with the trackpad. is there anything different to the air, is there a fix or is it just normal. thanks for replies. greez.
Yes. That wouldn't hurt. I do have a couple of other suggestions:
1 - create a new test library, import a few photos and see if the import succeeds. If it does then the problem is with the original library.
2 - if the test import crashes log into another account on your Mac, create a test library if there isn't a library there, and see if you can import. If you can't then a reinstall of iPhoto would be the next step.To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Reinstall iPhoto from the disks it came on and apply the latest updates.
3 - if you can import successfully in the second account your primary account is the culprit. It could be a preference file other than iPhoto's that's causing the problem. Here's how to determine if that's the case.
Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.

Macbook Pro Late 2008 Boot Issue
Hello All!
So I have an issue i would like to throw into the ring and see if I get any responses I have not thought of yet. Let me give you a quick backstory to my recent macbook adventures.... I will start with a quick prelude story.
Chapter One:
Purchased a used Macbook Pro, Late 2008 2.53ghz, 4gb DDR3 ram with no charger off ebay. And yes, I should know better. But honestly, it only had a cracked screen but still worked perfectly connected to an external monitor and i could not pass on the price of it.
Chapter Two:
After recieving my purchase, I determined that it was just a cracked cover over the LCD screen which is easily replaced, but the backlight was out on the LCD. So i ordered a new LCD. The new LCD did not fix my issue, which then pointed me to a problem on the motherboard. I then sent it out and had it repaired.
Chapter Three:
Upon recieving my newly repaired macbook, I installed a new SSD drive, battery and replaced the screen cover for the newly installed LCD. It looks Fantastic if I do say so myself! I then proceded to install lion and I have a perfect running Macbook Pro for less than 700 bucks after all was said and done.
Chapter Four:
Now, at this point you should know why I bought it... I use it for djing. That is it. There is nothing else on this. No apps, programs, or scripts. It has an updated lion OS on it and my serato itch Djing software. There isnt even any music on it as i store that on an external 3T WD elements drive. (I only installed an 80gb SSD for the OS system). Unfortunately i have had some instances where the Mac Pro has just shut down completely while im spinning! Not good for business!
Chapter Five:
Over the course of the last year I have noticed some things happening. Longer than normal boot times (especially since it has an SSD in it this seems wierd to me) and crashing of the Itch software while trying to analyze music or just not closing itch at all when im done playing a show and having to press and hold the power button to turn off the mac. Now for the kicker... Unbeknowst to me, apparently you cant use a 65W charger on a macbook that requires an 85W charger, this i just recently learned. The charger i was using was a 65W from a white 13 inch macbook 2006. I just recently aquired the 85W charger.
This brings us to the present.....
Here is the issue. I was analyzing my music files using itch, when suddenly & randomly one of the 2 analyzing indicators would just stop analyzing the track it was on... This leaves only one analyzer bar going and the other just stuck where it is (16000 songs will take awhile with only one analyzer going). If i stop analyzing and restart it, it picks up where it left off and continues for a bit and stops again, but its never the same track or same length of time before it stops analyzing. Now I have tried this with both Lion and Snow Leopard (the white macbook 2006 has snow) and it appears to happen with either OS.
So I decided to install Snow on my Mac Pro 2008. For some reason, and I dont know why, it would not let me install snow to the partion I made on the drive. The disc would just keep rebooting the Mac pro over and over again. I know for a fact that snow works because I took the drive out of the white Macbook 2006 and put it into the Mac Pro 2008. Booted right up.
So, I have re-installed itch on lion... Still has the same problem with lion.
I have restored a copy of snow to the partioned hard drive of my Mac Pro 2008 from my white macbook 2006. This seems to be the only way to do this if i want snow on my Mac Pro 2008 since it won't boot Snow from disc or USB. Installed a new copy of itch, still the same problem.
So my question is this.... Is it hardware or software?
And to stop those from putting the obvious, I have done all the PVRAM, SMC etc resets!! I am not some 12yr old trying to make daddys computer work again because i used it like i shouldn't have. Im looking for something besides the obvious!
Sorry, but I felt the entire story needed to be told in order to get the responses I'm looking for....
And thanks for taking the time to read about my issues! Hopefully someone can point me in the direction I need to go to get this to stop doing what it's doing. I will be more than happy to answer any and all questions concerning this issue as best I can.The heat generated may be a function of what you are doing on the Internet. Watching videos will stress the CPU/GPU and create heat and result in faster fan speeds.
First try a SMC and PRAM resets:

Internal HD upgrade or external HD for my Macbook Pro (Late 2008)
Hello,
I am finding the 250gb internal hard drive not enough and want to upgrade to a 500gb/1tb hard drive for my macbook pro (late 2008 edition).
What I am wondering is whether to change the internal hard drive OR buy the fastest possible external hard drive for my mac which I believe is one that works with firewire 800 as my late 2008 macbook pro does not come with USB 3.0.
The external hard drive I have found is £110 and my macbook would be using the Firewire 800 connection:
LaCie Rugged Triple 301984 1TB USB 3.0 and Firewire 800 5400 rpm Portable Hard Disk Drive
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rugged-Triple-301984-Firewire-Portable/dp/B005C2BNJI
I dont necessarily need the portability of a external hard drive. I work with large files (photoshop, illustrator files mainly) and would would be concerned that I would not be able to work directly on the hard drive for this type of work so an internal hard drive may be better/
Can anyone suggest a good, fast, cheap, popular internal hard drive compatible with my computer and whether you would suggest changing the internal HD or buying an external.
I am running Mavericks and the only other change I have made is by upgrading my RAM from 4gb to 8gb. Thanks so much for your help

<Edited By Host>For both convenience and speed, I'd recommend replacing the internal hard drive. Your MacBook Pro can handle nearly any internal SATA 2.5" HD on the market, including 7200rpm models. For what it's worth, I'd recommend a Western Digital Black WD7500BPKX or similar or Hitachi HGST 7K1000 although in my experience Hitachi drives run hot and that's the reason I don't use them as internal drives.
FW800 is fine, but then you have an external hard drive to lug around plus the connection is considerably slower than the internal SATA connection used by the internal hard drive.
Note that you will have to either 1) clone your existing drive to the new drive or 2) completely reinstall OSX and all your apps from scratch to the new drive when you replace the internal drive. If it were me, I'd take the opportunity to reinstall everything from scratch.
btw, I have done this myself on a number of 2008/2009 MacBook Pros and it's not hard at all. iFixit has tutorials on how to do this. (Here is a link to the one that I believe is your model. -
My macbook pro late 2008 randomly freeze
Hi I recently upgrade my macbook pro Late 2008 by adding a 250 go Crucial SSD drive in the main harddrive spot. I also put a 1 To HDD in the place of the super drive.
Since then, my macbook randomly freeze. I can't see any link to any specific usage. It just happen for no reasons. I had to reboot by holding the power button.
Thanks for your help!

Apr 6, 2015, 02:03:41 PM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Kernel_2015-04-06-140341_[expurgé].panic [Click for details]Hi r.w.p & welcome to the forums...
Some or all of the following may be necessary - try in this order:
1. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US ). If everything isn't fixed, then continue to follow the steps here including resetting your SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 ) if necessary.
2. Use Font Book to eliminate all bad and duplicate fonts.
3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
4. Reinstall 10.6 using your Snow Leopard install DVD by installing Snow over Snow using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to re-install the.6.1 & .6.2 updates - if you do, then use the combo updater again ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
Still no joy, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance. -
Macbook Pro late 2008 with Mavericks gets Grey screen of death.
Hey guys..
When Mavericks was released, I updated my old Macbook Pro (late 2008) 2.8ghz on work, and since then I have had a couple of Grey Screen of Deaths.
I had none of those before Mavericks, so I guess thats the source of the problem.
I've been trying to figure out what might cause it, from the crash log below, but I can't seem to figure anything from it, so I was hoping you guys could help me?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to be a kernel panic, caused by some PowerManagement from kernel_task. But how do one fix that?

Thunderbolt Bus:I am having similair issues : MBP 4.1 2008
It does not want to reboot at all .
Stops with the grey screen .Spinning wheel / gear stops spinning and Mac reboots automaticly to.... get stuck again .
Ive tried the recovery : No automatic reboot But same screen : ( grey , stuck stopped spinning wheel) some how it enters Disk Utility because I can trigger the voice that ask for the language etc. (I left it there overnight without result ) I dont see DU on screen ( tried second monitor : No luck )
Did a hardware test : No issues
Did single user logon : fsck : No problems with the drive ( after 2 runs ) ( 1st runs : changes were made )
Did Logon Verbose status : Initial messages : shutdown reasons : code 128 ... now followed by code 3
Tried to reinstall the original OSX ( 2008 ) No luck : grey screen changes to darker screen coming in from the top asking to reboot the system .
1st real bad signal was : When donwloading Maverick ( again ) to create a bootable USB the screen started flickering ( this started when pressing the download button ??? - I had to reboot the mac to stop
2 days later :
Last Live activity with this mac was : Trying to create maverick Bootable USB using diskmaker X ) During this activty the mac died on me .
I have a full time machine backup : so no worries about data...I hope )
This mac is one of the lucky ones with the bad NVDIA 8600m gt cards ... after upgrarding in march 2013 to Lion ..it crashed on me with the black screen of death ...Since apple stopped the guarantee I baked it in the oven at 200 c for 7 minutes . For the last months it was working Fine . ( Hardware check shows no issues - and upon reboot it chimes happy ..)
What could be my next options ? ( Obvious buying a new one ... This is allready launched as an idea . I need more creative thoughts :-) -
MacBook Pro Late-2008 Battery Can't Keep a Charge.
I understand I bought my MacBook Pro Late-2008 just before they upgraded the MacBook batteries; it's never held a good charge, so I've had to keep it plugged in. Lately I've been finding myself needing it when outlets might not be readily available.
After I remove the power cord, it doesn't stay charged for more than 3 minutes, 30 seconds (I've timed it more than once). Even with its age, this seems like a significant problem with the battery.
I'm really not sure it's worth it to spend $130 on a replacement battery, and I'm not in a position to simply get a new MacBook.
Are those third-party batteries actually legit? Is there a chance that an Apple Store might be able to take care of it? I'm well past the life of my Apple Care, obviously, but three minutes for the battery?
What is my best option? Or just suck it up and deal with having to find an outlet wherever I go?
Thanks. There are many third party batteries that are at best suspect. I have seen on Amazon what appear to be legitimate OEM Apple batteries which I suspect are graymarket products. You may try that at your own risk. If you purchase from Apple. you will know what you will be getting and with a warranty.
Ciao.
OWC has what appears to be a battery that will fit your MBP. They are a reputable vendor for Mac compatible products,

MacBook Pro (Late 2008) won't start up
Since December 2012, my MacBook Pro (late 2008) refuses start up. After trying many, many things (from online forums - nothing worked), the solution I found by hit and miss is to heat up the back of the laptop in front of my fireplace (or with a hair dryer), to remove the battery, to wait a few seconds and then to put it back in; after doing this, it turns on without a fuss and remains in perfect running condition until I turn it off again. I now leave it on 24/7 when at home, and I don't dare taking it away with me again... Seems to me a contact got loose and the heat expands it just enough to make it work again. Manufacturing problem?
Has anybody else got the same or a similar problem? I hope to fix this without going to an Apple store if possible, as it's not under warranty any more...
By the way, I have since replaced the battery and the hard disk, but that particular problem remains; I'm running OS X 10.8.2.It coule be one of two things:
1) Your hard drive has become corrupted, and you'll have to reinstall the OS and cut your losses.
2) Your logic board is fried. I seriously hope that this isn't the problem, but if it is, then it's time for a new mac.
My macbook pro was stuck on a bootup loop, and I finally had to reinstall the OS. This fixed my problem. On the other hand, I had this same problem on my iMac, and an OS reinstall didn't do anything.
Before making any judgements, take it to the genius bar and get some expert advice.
