Broken Keyboard

I am one of those unfortunate foes who managed to spill liquid on my keyboard. Now, my delete, number one, volume(s) and brightness buttons do not work at all. It has been this way for over a month (yes I took the normal precautions when this incident happened and no I did not have any success).
To be honest, I have gotten relatively used to it with one exception. My macbook's password contains the number one in it and I need to update the laptop. When I do this, the locked screen pops up asking me for my password which I cannot enter - I can't even copy and paste.
My question to the community is - Is there a way for me to reset or enter my password without the ability to use my number one key? Also, does anyone have any idea as to how much it may cost to repair/replace the keyboard? I no longer have Apple care as I have probably voided it due to the fact that I spilt something on it and also because the laptop is 4 years old.
Any help much appreciated

So since the liquid spill happened most of the damage that could be done, most likely has already happened.
>Is there a way for me to reset or enter my password without the ability to use my number one key?<
I think the easiest and most direct method would be to plug in a USB keyboard and use that to change your password.
>Also, does anyone have any idea as to how much it may cost to repair/replace the keyboard?<
My keyboard is also defective due to a liquid spill. "Q--P" keys don't work. I use a BlueTooth keyboard. I got it cheap because of the spill and I took it apart and repaired the logic board et al.
I did buy a replacement keyboard but everything has to come out of the MBP (2011 13" i5) and there are 50 screws holding that keyboard in place.
I have had the replacement keyboard ($50) for 2.5 years and have never gotten the energy to do the repair.

  • Broken keyboard on Satellite notebook

When I press the space bar a 4 will pop up.
    It is incredibly annoying.
Is this a virus or a broken keyboard? If you can please tell me how to get this fixed.

    Hi shaunbailey101,
One thing would be important: What Satellite notebook you have exactly?
At the moment its not easy to say what is causing this problem but you should connect an external keyboard. If this works properly, your internal keyboard is faulty. In this case you need a new one because there are no single keys to exchange it.
If you contact the authorized service provider, they can order a new keyboard for you. :)

  • Macbook mid 2007 broken keyboard where close display touch

Hi I have a macbook a1181 and my problem is that my keyboard is broken where the display touch and i know that apple had established this like a factory problem, so is it possible to repair in apple's assistance shop free even if my warrantee is finished or i have to pay for a new one?
    thanks

None of us here can give you a definite answer. You need to bring the machine to an Apple store and ask the folks there.
It is true, at least here in the United States, that folks have had their topcases replaced at no charge to the user. I'm not sure if the same will hold true for other countries.

  • Broken Keyboard Clip :p

Okay, so I wanted to replace the keyboard in my laptop. It's an HP Pavilion DV5-2077cl. I went over the steps in the service manual and all. However, like an idiot, I was fuzzy on how to actually disconnect it from the motherboard. I accidentally pulled the clip out of the socket and (as with most things that move in a direction that is away from me) it ended up lost in an alternate dimension/parallel universe, never to be seen again. I need to locate this part. I've searched everywhere looking for it to no avail. I even looked for scrap motherboards, but I was SOL. So now my only option is to reach out and ask just where I can go to find this 1 inch piece of plastic that's causing me so much pain. If nothing, is there any way to connect it without the clip that doesn't involve super glue, Krazy Glue, or any kind of gluing for that matter? Even so, I'm even willing to go as far as to replace the motherboard, but is that even worth it?

Unfortunately if the clip is lost or broken, then acquiring a new motherboard or a used one is the only solution. I looked around on e-bay and there were no spare parts one available, just working ones. Here is one which takes an AMD processor.

Make sure the part numbers matches, you will find it under the memory sticks ounce they're removed.
Here is the search where I got it from.

Your specs show you are running an AMD processor.

  • Broken keyboard buttons on Satellite 3000-100

Hello, I have a problem with the keyboard of my Satellite Notebook. Some keys are broken and I want to replace them, but it's really hard. Now I want to change the entire keyboard, but I don't know, how to do this.
Do I have to call a technician of Toshiba or can I change it myself?
I'm sorry for my bad english ;)
    Thanks, Luca

    Hi
    > Do I have to call a technician of Toshiba or can I change it myself?
Usually you should always contact the notebook technicians for such jobs. I mean there is a tiny risk that you could damage some other parts.
At the other hand if you have good notebook experience you could also replace such keyboard.
What you need is a compatible keyboard.
This could be ordered from the Toshiba ASP in your country.
The keyboard is secured with 4 screws which are hidden under the plastic cover.
Pull the right side on the strip cover and lift it up. But be careful due to the cable on the right side. Then release the cable gently from the connector on the strip cover assembly, then lift the strip cover out.
Remove four keyboard screws that secure the keyboard and then slide the keyboard backward until the keyboard cable is pulled out from under the logic upper.
Then disconnect the keyboard connector and the second connector from the VGA board and lift the keyboard up and out.
The procedure is not difficult for someone who has already disassembled a notebook. But again; if you dont have the needed experience then dont do it and ask an technician for the help.
    Bye

  • Broken keyboard zif plastic

While i was changing my keyboard on my hp Pavilion dv4 the little plastic that keeps the cable in the controller broke one of the legs so it wont stay in one place steady.Where can i get a spare from?

Sure that is really about the only way to do it but make sure the zif connector is there before you buy it. And you also need to be sure that nothing on your board is broken such that a new zif connector will not attach correctly.

  • Stuck In Boot Camp With Broken Keyboard PLEASE HELP

    Hi there,
Just recently, I decided I wanted to install Windows 7 on my iMac for gaming. Now, this has worked before, so I expected it to go without a hitch.
Now I sit here (on my Dad's PC), waiting for an answer. I am stuck on the black screen saying "No bootable device - press any key". I see a lot of other posts saying that I need to press option on my keyboard, but that's another problem. I have a Windows gaming keyboard, so the keys have a Windows layout. So instead, I pressed alt, which apparently is the equivalent. Nothing. I tried all the other key shortcuts, and still nothing. I noticed that when I booted up, my keyboard lit up (it's LED), but if I pressed CAPS lock or the num key, the indicators wouldn't light up.
All I want to do is boot into OS X! This is extremely frustrating, as I have some very important work on my iMac.
    Someone please help me.
P.S I have tried with other keyboards, and that hasn't fixed it.

Just generally starting up my Mac, and changing back to OS X when I used to have Windows working on my iMac. By pressing alt on my Windows layout keyboard.

  • Help a Poor Guy with a Broken Keyboard

    Hi Everyone!
I was wondering if someone could help with a workaround for a problem I have: Certain keys on my netbook keyboard stop working, seemingly at random (if anyone knows why this could be, I'm all ears).
I'm trying to use fluxbox keys to use a shortcut to send a keystroke, for example 'Control' and '3' to send 'e' or 'Control' and 'd' to send 'c'.
Is there a command/package that can do this?
I did google for a while but I don't really know what to search for.
    -Coire

    Hi,
I don't use fluxbox and I don't know if it determines something.
But you can use xmodmap to remap keys and combinations.
With xev you can press the keys and know the keycode to use for xmodmap
    E.g.
    xmodmap -e 'keycode 56 = Control_L'
    xmodmap -e 'keycode 64 = AudioUp'

  • Broken keyboard! Help please

I recently bought a Blackberry 8900 off of Craigslist about a month ago. Everything has been working perfectly up until 2 days ago when my keyboard stopped working. I dropped the phone in wet grass and think that may have something to do with it but the keyboard wont do anything. When I take the battery out and put it in again the phone will start up fine and my home screen will come up but I cant push any buttons to access the phone. When I plug in the phone, it will come up as charging but other than that its useless. Since I bought it off craigslist, Im unsure if the manufacturers warranty is still on it(waiting for a reply from the person I bought it from) and I was just wondering if there was anything I could try to fix it.
    Thanks!

  • Help needed with a broken Keyboard

    Hi there,
was wondering how to have a keyboard on a q10 fixed.  The letter z appears to "attach" itself to everything typed, even the space bar.  Just hovering over it lightly makes it pop up on the screen.  In the Mississauga area, I would really appreciate any assistance.
    Thanks,

Sounds like the device got wet or somehow got moisture in the keyboard. Put it in a bag of rice for a few days and see if that helps.

  • Broken Keyboard Column On Powerbook 12"

    Hi all.
Today i powered on my powerbook and discovered that the column of my keyboard m, j, u and the number seven doesn't work.
    Any idea what's wrong?
    Thanks!
PS - I typed using a lot of copy and paste

Same thing just happened to me today. The same column: 7,U,J,M. This is on a early '08 MacBook Pro 15". I'm guessing it's a hardware failure. Works fine with another keyboard.

  • IOS 8 third party keyboards are broken

I tried installing three different 3rd party keyboards, Swype, Fleksy and SwiftKey. All of them appear broken with either an invisible keyboard, or a grey background and no keys present. Tapping in the keyboard area doesn't produce any typed keys. All three were downloaded from the app store and then installed through the settings app.
When I switch from the standard English keyboard to any of these three keyboards (using the global key), the keyboard appears as a solid grey background with no keys, but the app acts as if the keyboard is activated. If I close the app (double tap home button, swipe up to fully close the app) and then reopen the app to type something in, then the keyboard appears invisible as if the keyboard never animated up from the bottom of the screen.
This happens with all apps that present a keyboard. If I want the English keyboard back, I have to go into the settings app and remove those third party keyboards from the installed list. Restarting my iPhone with and without the keyboards installed doesn't seem to fix or improve the problem.
here's a screenshot of a broken keyboard in the Notes app:

Another user posted earlier to go to Settings>General>Accessibility and make sure that Guided Access is turned off. He said it worked for him and some others.
