Broken keys

Hi,
I have a 8 months old iBook G4 1.33MHz and this morning I decided to give the keyboard a clean so I released it from the laptop, when I was manipulating it suddently the screw lock key jumped off (it wasn't locked to the laptop) this is the one between F5 and F6. I could see that the right hook side of the key was almost gone and it wouldn't click properly. Using a bit of force I managed to make it stay. I assumed it was a faulty key but made me think if Apple in these cases sends a new replacement keyboard for the customers themselves to change or you have to send the computer for servicing.
I would like to have a new keyboard (expensive laptop with a not so good keyboard, no thanks ) or use it for spares (I heard comments of dissapearing letters)
Has any anybody had a similar experience?
It stuck today but it might not be tomorrow.
Thanks

don't know how it works in Spain, in the U.S. parts for iBooks are not available as do-it-yourself (except for the batteries.)

contact Apple authorised service provider in your area, they should be able to order keyboard.
also, you probably do not need to return your old keyboard, but confirm with your service provider.

  • Anyone replace the keyboard on thier Macbook?  I have 1 broken key.

My plus 4 year old MacBook 13" Intel Core Duo continues to work great!  The only prblem is that there is a broken key (not just the cover key) on the keyboard.  Anyone replace their keyboard?  estimated cost?  Is it worth it based upon the age (technology of this machine).
    Thank you.  Jim

Depending on the exact model build & year MacBook/Pro, a keyboard
may be an involved process, to replace; it could require you to replace
the top half of the bottom section (that means the keyboard, trackpad
and the plastic housing.) Perhaps just a key may be repaired?
    {Your tag-line below post says "MacBook Pro" - yet post says MacBook.}
To take a look into the iFixit guides to repair a MacBook, narrow down
the different ones to find what matches yours, can give an idea on that.

Also you may be able to replace just the key-cap and spring under it.
If that is the actual cause of the problem you face, you can get a new
single key and spring parts. Parts vary depending on exact model.
Some days ago I posted a reply to a different keyboard question and
there are links in there that each may be worth a look... in MacBook
area. One of those links shows other Apple Portables & parts.

A company such as powerbookmedic may carry parts, pre-owned
and otherwise. Repair companies who also have inventory may
be worth it to contact, if you can identify precisely your MacBook.
A possible connection there may be one like wegenermedia.com
Perhaps some of that may be of help.

  • Yoga 11s broken key...where can I get a new one...

Just bought a yoga 11s a few days ago, and just when i get all my software moved over, the screen +brightness key falls out. The little white tab inside is broken, and it falls out a lot now.
Aside from the single band wifi card, this laptop is beast. The broken key has me bummed out, i dont want to return it. Can I get a new key? Last I checked, the lenovo warenty service website kept giving me 'unable to connect to server' when i tried to use the warenty system.
    Any other alternative routes?

Hi calvindrews, welcome to the forums,
you can call the IdeaPad support number, have your model and serial numbers handy, and they should be able to easily resolve the issue for you.

  • Broken key on new macbook pro (late 2008)?

I just got my brand new macbook pro and noticed that my right shift key is broken. It is a bit hard to explain, but basically I can only press down the bottom right corner of the key. The top left corner of the key will not push down no matter how hard I push down on it and feels "stuck". Because of this, whenever I am using the shift key on the right side of the keyboard I have to make sure that I press the bottom right part of the key in order for the notebook to detect it. Quite annoying. Is anyone else having the same issue, and is there any work around for this? I am currently in South Korea for an extended period of time and am not really sure I want to take it in to the apple authorized repair centers here, because I have heard some bad stories about them.

    ****, worst case scenario.
In that case, would I have to get it fixed right away or can I just wait until I get back to the california around february/march? Or in other words, would they still fix it for me even though I have had the laptop for about 6 months or do I have to bring it in right away. Because I am out of the country I would prefer to wait until I can take it to an apple store back in the states rather than dealing with it in another country, specifically because I have heard some bad stories about dealing with the authorized care centers here. I just don't want to wait 6 months and have them say that they can't do anything about it because I have already had the laptop for half a year.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

  • Broken keys, can't unlock my macbook. help?

My 'T', 'E' and '5' keys on my macbook pro is broken so i can't type my password to unlock it.  Are there plug and play keyboards i could use, or is there a way i could connect my old macbook via a cord to utilize its keyboard?  not sure if its a repairable thing or not.  if its cheaper i'd rather just get a keyboard than have to send it out for much $.  not still under warrenty, got it in '11 or '12. my sisters kids were pounding on the keys and broke em.

  • Broken Key on MacBook Keyboard

So, my Space Bar no longer works. I took the key off, and it is the receptor that does not work, not just the plastic key being broken or unclean.
(Right now I am getting through by copying a space in other text and pasting it everytime I need a space, and, and I just can't do this for much longer)
I'm figuring getting this fixed will be quite expensive, so I'm wondering on estimates?
Also, if it is indeed more than I am willing to spend, is there a way I can modify the keyboard settings on my macbook so that I can press a different key or combination of keys to get the same result as a space bar?
Or can you hook up an external keyboard to a MacBook?

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
I had to replace the keyboard on my iBookG4 thanks to a cat removing several of the keys. Apple charged for just the replacement board which was about $99.00. Well worth it in my case at least.
Yes, you can use an external wireless or USB keyboard with your MacBook.

  • Broken key... how to replace

my right apple-key is physically broken. It still sends the signal to the computer when i press it, but it's wobbly and will come off from time to time. by looking at it, i can see exactly what is wrong and it's only the grey-plastic part of the key that is broken. If i get a new one I believe I can stick it back on there pretty easily. My question is, if I go to Apple for a new command key will they need to replace it themselves (i.e. send my computer away for who knows how long) or can I just get it fixed on the spot. Or can I call apple and have them ship me a key? or does anyone know where I can get an individual key for cheap?

    Hi
I've had one of my keycaps broken off before and had luck replacing it with parts from powerbookmedics.
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Powerbook-Keys-MacBook-Pro---Individual-Key-Keycap -p-16753.html
It may be easier to talk to someone there in order to get the keycap you need. (I could not get the "apple key" to come up in the shopping cart)
    Good luck.

  • Broken key on keyboard and staticy audio from one speaker. Advice?

Hey everyone, I'm new around here, name is Mike...
I bought a T61p last Sept. and have loved every minute of it.
    However, I have two problems:
    a)  I was typing the other day and one of the keys (the ctrl key on the right hand side) popped off, and I can't seem to pop it back on.  I think one of the little connectors might be broken?  Normally I don't even use this key, so it's not the end of the world, but it looks kind of trashy, and I'm worried about excess dust getting into my computer now that there is another opening.
    b)  When playing music above level "40", there is lots of static on the left speaker.  It has been this way since day one, but since I normally use external speakers or headphones, it's never been too big of a problem, but since I might be sending it out to get my keyboard fixed, I figured I should have the issue addressed.
According to the warranty, I have until Sept 09 for it to run out...
So, my question is what should I do to get my T61p back into perfect condition?  What steps should I take?
    Thanks!!!

    Solved!

Well, by "limitation" I mean that a tiny 0.5" speaker doesn't have much power handling capacity and unit to unit variation will likely result in the breakup of one before the other.  You aren't going to get "loud" and you aren't going to get "bass" (if you turn up the bass in Media Player that will definitely distort the speakers).

  • Broken Key issue

I've got a little problem that I need some help with. Recently, I spilled a little soda on my keyboard and I ended up removing a couple of the side keys to clean them out. These keys include the right arrow, the right shift, and the backslash. The other keys went in right, but when I went to install the right arrow key, it didn't fit right and wouldn't stay secure. As I checked the key, I noticed one of the two pegs that attaches the key to the keyboard was broken off. Now, the key still hangs in its space by the other peg and the clip, but it slides out a lot. Is there a cheap way to fix this, or will I have to replace the key?

$9 for a key? get the ** out! thats a rip off... these things are probably only .50 to make.. if that, probably pennies on the dollar... i could see paying $10 for an entire set, but not for one key.
apple should fix this if its under warranty right? i'm going to my local apple store this weekend.

  • Broken key...

Something under one of my keys broke, and it makes an annoying movement/sound. how do i know if this is covered by the original 1 year hardware thing?

Apple will probably claim it is either misuse or a cosmetic defect, hence not covered by warranty. Then offer to repair it by replacing the entire topcase, keyboard and trackpad included, for a lot of money.
I've been there and opted to buy a new key instead, Caps Lock in my case, for $4.50 + shipping. After removing the remains of the original, installing the new was a matter of popping it in place. Look here: https://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/

  • Broken keys on keyboard

I have a customer that just called to ask if I can replace 3 keys on his MacBook Pro 17". Don't ask me how, but a rock fell on his computer and broke the CapsLock, Shift and Fn keys.
Can you tell me if it is possible to replace those keys or do I need to purchase a new keyboard for him?
    Thanks in advance!

PowerBook Medic sells keys. They come with the little plastic clips and, although it is a little tricky to install, if the underlying pin and retaining clip sockets are not damaged, it's certainly possible to replace the keys.

  • Apple's policy for fixing broken keys

What is Apple's policy for fixing keys that have fallen off? I have three keys that have fallen off, I have two of the three keys still. If I take it in will Apple fix them and if so what about the key that I don't have? The Macbook is still under warranty.

Your local Genius Bar will replace them, free of charge under warranty, and probably in ten minutes or less.

You don't say whether you are able to "Unlock" device but if so it might be worth trying option to re-install existing device software in Nokia Suite > Options > Software updates to exclude software corruption as a pre-cursor to visiting Nokia Care facility.
