Broken links when PDF'ing from Structured Framemaker 8.0 in Windows XP

We have a large number of links in our documents that are created using structured Framemaker 8.0 in a Windows XP environment. The xrefs work fine in FM, but once they have been PDF'd all of the links are broken. Since these are large documents, it can take over a day to relink everything.  All links are created using the fm-xref tag and link to other topics/items within the FM book.
Any suggestions for what may be the problem?
I am also posting this in the Framemaker forum.

The Set Destination option isn't working for us either.
This is what we are seeing:
In our source doc, a cross-reference is created using the fm-xref structured tag. At that point the cross-reference works. We create a series of topics using cross-references the same way.
These topics are assembled into ditamaps.  The cross-references are still working.
A book is then created and all ditamaps are created as chapters within the book.
At this point, the fm-xrefs stop working. In some cases, they were converted to xrefs instead of retaining the fm-xref tag. At this point, some of the formatting is ignored.  For example, an example tag that looks lovely in the left column, suddenly becomes a Heading 1 which is a chapter heading.
Needless to say, the frustration level is very high.  I would attach, but it appears that .fm or book files are not an acceptable file type.
Please help us. It may be something terribly simple, that we just can't see anymore because we're cross-eyed from troubleshooting.
We love FM and would like to continue to use it, but not if it causes this type of frustration. In fact, we're considering becoming nurses.

  • What is the best way to find what version of PDF Reader from Adobe is installed on a windows OS?

    Hi,
I am developing a .Net App in which i want to find which version of PDF Reader from Adobe is installed on an Windows OS.
It can be any of the software
    Adobe Reader
    Adobe Acrobat X Pro
    or any other.
    How to find out?

The best way would be to find and query the AcroRd32.exe executable. The file version information is stored in the executable itself.
There are lots of places in the registry that you could also potentially access relevant information.
    For example the uninstall string:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
Contains a string that you could use to search for the application version.
How you would do this in .NET I'm not sure but you would use some kind of text search command to search for the relevant text and then use "if exists" condition.

  • Messages: Broken links when sending from Mac to iOS

If I copy a link from Safari (right-click > Copy link) and send it with Messages on Mac it remains a clickable link with a link text (in the chat window).
The problem is if the recipient uses Messages on iOS he will only see the link text and cannot click on the link.
Is there a solution to this annoying bug?
    The workaround I use is:
Copy the link from the clipboard into the chat input box. BEFORE sending rightclick on the link > "Copy link" and then insert from the clipboard again. This way you get the URL of the link which is always clickable (on Mac AND iOS).

    Hi,
Over the years the various messaging services that there are have all done things related to sending Links with words as Hyperlinks.
The AIM service in particular had a very bad time with people putting malicious code in the link instead of just the URL.
The matter can be confused when some URLs are very long such as News websites and the like.
I use the same workaround as you (Send plain text URLs)

  • Problem linking to PDF file from generated help

I am using RoboHelp HTML, Version 7.02 to create WebHelp, and
I cannot open a PDF file that I linked to some text in a topic. (I
created a PDF file that contains all of the help system's topics so
    users can print them all.)
I can open the PDF file just fine when I preview the topic,
but I cannot open the PDF file from the generated help system. (I
set up the link to open in a new window.) When I click the link for
the PDF file, nothing happens, not even an error message. If I
right-click the link and select Properties from the menu, the
Properties dialog box shows the following path to the file:
    file:///C:/Users/Myname/Documents/My%20RoboHelp%20Projects/project%20folder%20
    name/!SSL!/WebHelp/print_all_help_topics.pdf
To create the link, I first copied the PDF file into my
project folder, Then I right-clicked the Baggage Files folder and
selected New>Baggage File, and clicked Open to add the file to
my Baggage Files folder. Then I dragged the file name from the
Baggage Files folder onto the selected text in my topic, saved all
    and generated the WebHelp.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi Rick.
Yes, mark of the web is selected. I just turned that option
off and re-generated and the PDF opens just fine, but of course,
I'm getting the Internet Explorer message that my browser is trying
to restrict the webpage from running ActiveX controls ... I was
using mark of the web so that my customer's users won't get this
message, although I don't know what ActiveX controls my help system
would be running. I'm just hoping that my customer doesn't balk at
this message appearing. Is turning off mark of the web is my only
choice for getting the link to work?
Thanks for your help and your welcome message. In case you
can't tell, I'm a newbie to RoboHelp. BTW, your website was
invaluable in helping me to create the link to begin with. Thank
    you!

  • Generating HTML from Structured FrameMaker 9

    Hi,
My source files are in Structured FrameMaker 9. I need to generate the output in HTML format. Is there a method to do this? Can someone guide me through the process of generating an HTML output?
    Regards,
    Manish

    Hi Manish,
You have a number of options. I'll briefly summarize a few, but all of them involve some measure of complexity so I wouldn't be able to "guide you through" any of them.
    - Use a third-party product specifically designed for this, such as Omni Systems' Mif2Go, Quadralay ePublisher, or Adobe Robohelp. If you buy the Adobe TechComm Suite, Robohelp is included. All of these products can convert any FrameMaker document to HTML, with varying levels of additional functionality related to the subsequent generation of common online help formats with that HTML.
    - Save your structured files to XML and then use XSLT as a post-process on that XML. This is the more complex option, but if you have the skills, it may be more attractive since you may not have to buy anything and you'll be able to easily customize the process however you want it.
    - Use the DITA structure definitions within FrameMaker, then use the DITA Open Toolkit as a post-process to generate HTML from the DITA XML. There is lots of complexity with this as well, but it has some attractiveness as the DITA structured applications and open toolkit are effectively off-the-shelf software. Additionally, everything is free, unless you want to enhance your DITA experience with a third-party addon like DITA FMx from Leximation (recommended).
    - Use XHTML as your structure definition within FrameMaker, then save as XML. You'll automatically have HTML when you save your files. FrameMaker includes a structure application for XHTML but I've never used it, so I don't know how well it works. With this option, you would have a more WYSIWYG conveniences while authoring but less control over variations in the HTML output.
There may be more and there certainly are any myriad of combinations of these techiniques. Hopefully this will help get you started. If you did buy the TechComm Suite, consider RoboHelp as a starting point since you already paid for it. The third-party product route is the most expensive in terms of software purchasing, but it is usually the least complex.
One additional note - You will see "Save As HTML" or similar somewhere in the FM menus. It is a very rudimentary feature that is not likely to serve your needs. Might be worth a try since it is already there, but don't get your hopes up on that one.
    Good luck,
    Russ

  • How do I transfer pdf files from Ipad to Itunes on my windows computer

I have been trying to transfer some pdf files from my Ipad to my windows computer using Itunes with no luck. The files are listed in Ibook as pdf files but Itunes does not recognize them as pdf fies.  Is there a way to transfer the files to my computer that I don't know about?
    Jaggs

You can use the desktop version of iTunes app to transfer PDF files between your iPad and MacBook Pro.
Please take a look at the following FAQ document.
How to backup and restore PDF documents on your iPad/iPhone using iTunes
Please let us know if you have any questions about the steps that are described in the document.
Alternatively, if you use Acrobat.com (cloud storage), you can upload/save all of your PDF files on Acrobat.com and access them from your new iPad.

  • Table content disappearing when PDF'ing in FrameMaker 10

Recently when I've pdf'd a book in FrameMaker 10, some of the content in the tables is missing. It can be either text or graphics and usually occurrs towards the start of the book, but it won't be throughout the book. This doesn't happen with every book, only the odd one, but is very frustrating.
If I pdf the individual Frame file, it works perfectly, some of these files have been used in previous books and the books pdf'd OK with no problems. The computer is running Windows 7 with 12 GB of RAM.
    Any ideas?

Actually, I had similar issue, but it was FM.  Occasionally, when I did a Save as PDF or Save as with HTML, FM went on for a few moment then stoped saving with an error message along the line: Cannot create <some file name>...  It kept doing the same thing for several tries until I deleted the previously generated files, then all would be well for a while, until the next time...  I don't know it had anything to do with the generated files (PDF or HTML) being opened on a web-browser at the moment.  Yet, as I remembered prior to that and verified afterward, in those times that went without such error, those files were being opened as well.  Thanks!
    PS: I'm using FrameMaker 11

  • RH11 404 - Page Not Found when linking to PDF file from search results using IE9 and IE10

I'm using RH11 (11.0.3.268) and I've included a number of PDF files as baggage files. The hyperlinks on the pages work fine and display the PDF files in a separate window, as expected. However, when searching for these same PDF files using the Search tab, I'm getting a 404 error with the filename. The description on the error shows the filename and says the "the requested resource is not available." This is occurring using IE9 and IE10. And, it only happens within the application, which packages the WebHelp with a war file.
I searched the forum and found where someone was having the same problem on Firefox, but was fine on IE. But, as mentioned, I'm finding it on IE.
Thoughts on how to fix this error?

Is the WAR file extracted at the point when the search is done? If not, I would expect it to fail.

  • Live links in PDFs generated from Microsoft Word 2008?

A couple of years ago, I was informed that my live links (bookmarks, indexmarks, etc.) in documents generated by Microsoft Word 2004 for the Macintosh did not become PDF live links in Acrobat Standard 7 because the Mac version from Microsoft Word 2004 didn't use the necessary hooks (
    i "APIs"
or something like that) even though the Windows version did.
Now that MS Word/MS Office 2008 for the Mac is coming out, will we be able to generate PDFs with such live links.
Any input will be most appreciated.
Acrobat Standard 7.0.9. Tiger 10.4.11. Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some. Counting external FW drives just over 1TB of drive space available. nVidia GeForce 7800 GS 425MHz 256 MB graphics display card. Processor napping enabled through CHUD 3.5.2.

While this does not answer the problem of live links. (You can create them Manually, they just are not generated direct from Office Mac).
The answer to the other question of the little annoying PDFMaker Menu (that never really worked correctly for me (took 5 minutes just to generate a 108K PDF).
Because MicroSoft took out VBA Support on Mac side That rendered the PDFMaker menu useless because it uses VBA to work.
So what they have done in Word 2008 is actually put it as Translator choice on the save menu. They now directly can save Word Files directly as PDF files. once you have created your file and saved it. Then go again to *Save As....* , when menu open scroll mouse down until you run across the choice PDF. select that and save. not only is it easier a 108K document can be saved in about 15 seconds or less not the old 5 minutes going through PDFMaker.
One of PDFMaker's failings was that each step of conversion it called up Distiller which first created a .PS file. Then it checked the file. Then created the PDF file. Then checked the file again before actually writing the PDF File. Then only after checking the written PDF, would it delete the invisible PS file. Finally the PDF file was created. Naturally with all the check steps if you have a very large file could take ages.
With word's new feature (2008) you can generate a PDF at blinding speeds.

  • Broken links when made changes to the topic

I recently installed RoboHelp x5. When I opened a topic with

  • Dead links in PDF output, OK in FrameMaker

Can someone give a solution as to why some cross reference links in my PDFs are dead and most other work. If I do a Ctrl/Alt and click on the cross reference in my FrameMaker source file, they navigate me to the correct location in the document. I have deleted the cross references and reinserted them, but this did not work.
    Help!, thanks!

My coworker is using the new Tech Comm Suite (which includes the new Frame version 8.0) and I will ask if he has this setting enabled. However, why would some links work and not others within the same PDF? If he did not have this setting enabled, wouldn't all link be dead? Your thoughts or anyone else have thoughts?

  • IBooks 1.5 looses file name when PDF moved from other apps in iOS 5.0.1 on iPad!

Opening a titled email PDF attachment in iBooks results in untitled document within ibook. The document transfers from email to good reader or other PDF reader applications without issue. It is an iBooks issue. This started in version 1.5. How can I load a previous version of iBooks?
Looking at the iTunes books tab the same document has a numerical value as the title.
The same thing happens if you open a titled PDF document in good reader and use the open with iBook button.
Anytime a document is sent to iBooks on the iPad, the title becomes blank in iBooks, but the title in iTunes is a 128 bit number.
How do you report such an issue to apple iBook team?

I am having a similar problem, the pdf "book" has one name on itunes on my mac, but on my ipad (IOS 5.0.1 build 9A405) the names are different. Plus pdf "books" keep disappearing. If I go into itunes on the Mac and make any change in the "get info" such as comment etc and resync the pdf shows up again.
Several days later the file again disappears from the ipad (no I am NOT deleting them and I have plenty of free memory on the ipad) and I have make yet another small change.
I did not encounter this behaviour in previous version of ibook.
