Broken links when publishing

Hi,
Thanks in advance for your time and help. The links I created don't work when the site has been published unless I use the "Display navigation menu"--when the navigation menu at the top of the page is showing, then my other links work. Also, copywrite info at the bottom of the page does not show.
I created menu by using 2% opacity jpeg images over a text box. Here is the site.

James, thank you so much for your help. It was because the navigation bar I had made up I had put at the top (a seemingly natural place to put it!). I actually ended up dumping it all together which amazingly sorted out some of the placement issues I was having - again related to the 'reserved' area at the top I suspect. The reason I had gone to my own nav bar was I had changed the colour of the default template and the 'in-built' colour of the navbar became a little hard to see. I will just have to live with it until iWeb 2.0 comes out (hopefully with the ability to set the nav bar colours (did you hear that Apple?)) or I spend more time digesting info I have downloaded and dive into the XML file to change the colours. The other interesting thing I have found with text covering pictures is that I had put some text to the side of pictures in free floating text boxes, some was just on the page, and some was in text boxes 'locked' to the margin (if you click the Text box tool while the cursor is in the margin, it seemingly 'locks' into place on the page. Of all of these, I expected the free floating text box to be the one to move around on the page and end up in different places on the published site, but remarkably, that is the one that has stayed where it was put. The other types of text have been covered over by pictures in some instances so I am changing those to free floating too. This is either a tip for someone or someone else will tell me what I am doing wrong with the ones that are not working. This is probably as clear as mud but I hope you get the gist of it.

Links Work in iWeb but ONLY Header Links when Published.

Strange but true. I have set links on the page and in the header. But when I publish to a folder the links on the welcome page don't work but in the header do. It doesn't matter if they are text or graphic. I have copied the links to other pages and sometimes they do work on these other pages.
Any ideas?????

I had this problem and found that some of my text boxes were covering the links. Click on to Show Layout in View and you should be able to see where your text boxes are. On saying that mine were – no colour and no line – so they don't really show up. Just make sure all boxes are sent to back of links.

Broken links when made changes to the topic

I recently installed RoboHelp x5. When I opened a topic with
a whole bunch of links (hotspots), and make changes to the word. I
saved, compiled, and review my changes. My word changes are okay,
but when I click on the link, it points to the one below it. Some
links are okay, but some are not. Does anybody has any idea why
this is happening. Version 4 does not give my any problem.
P.S. I'm working on two machine, one with Word 97 and the
other is Word 2000.

Broken links when PDF'ing from Structured Framemaker 8.0 in Windows XP

We have a large number of links in our documents that are created using structured Framemaker 8.0 in a Windows XP environment. The xrefs work fine in FM, but once they have been PDF'd all of the links are broken. Since these are large documents, it can take over a day to relink everything. All links are created using the fm-xref tag and link to other topics/items within the FM book.
Any suggestions for what may be the problem?

The Set Destination option isn't working for us either.
This is what we are seeing:
In our source doc, a cross-reference is created using the fm-xref structured tag. At that point the cross-reference works. We create a series of topics using cross-references the same way.
These topics are assembled into ditamaps. The cross-references are still working.
A book is then created and all ditamaps are created as chapters within the book.
At this point, the fm-xrefs stop working. In some cases, they were converted to xrefs instead of retaining the fm-xref tag. At this point, some of the formatting is ignored. For example, an example tag that looks lovely in the left column, suddenly becomes a Heading 1 which is a chapter heading.
Needless to say, the frustration level is very high. I would attach, but it appears that .fm or book files are not an acceptable file type.
Please help us. It may be something terribly simple, that we just can't see anymore because we're cross-eyed from troubleshooting.
We love FM and would like to continue to use it, but not if it causes this type of frustration. In fact, we're considering becoming nurses.

Messages: Broken links when sending from Mac to iOS

If I copy a link from Safari (right-click > Copy link) and send it with Messages on Mac it remains a clickable link with a link text (in the chat window).
The problem is if the recipient uses Messages on iOS he will only see the link text and cannot click on the link.
Is there a solution to this annoying bug?
The workaround I use is:
Copy the link from the clipboard into the chat input box. BEFORE sending rightclick on the link > "Copy link" and then insert from the clipboard again. This way you get the URL of the link which is always clickable (on Mac AND iOS).

Over the years the various messaging services that there are have all done things related to sending Links with words as Hyperlinks.
The AIM service in particular had a very bad time with people putting malicious code in the link instead of just the URL.
The matter can be confused when some URLs are very long such as News websites and the like.
I use the same workaround as you (Send plain text URLs)

AFter upgrading to FF7, I get certificate errors & only see text & broken links when trying to reach the FF Addons website. How can I correct this?

I am currently at work, & this issue is occuring on my home computer--which I cannot reach at the moment.

I now find that even when I attempt to visit the FF Addon page from work, using either IE or FF 6, gives me the same problems. & the system date & time on my work computer is correct.

Templates show up as having broken links in site link check

I have about 20 templates for my site, and a couple of them show up as having broken links when I do a check links site wide search?
When I make changes to these particular templates now, the new links and associated pages will show up as having broken links also?
Then when I map the new pages to the correct page, I get the template is locked message?
I suspect the problem starts with why are the templates being included in the link check to begin with.
Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Iweb publishing - broken links

When trying to publish my website, a few images show broken links. Then I get an error message: "there was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again or check with your service provider". I did, and they find everything ok from their part. They suggested it was probably a code problem. The strange thing is that some files (images and web pages) are uploaded, but not all. Any idea what I can do about it? Many thanks, BC

Are you using the iWeb FTP or another application?
The iWeb FTP is kind of fussy about files names.
A good FTP app will give you a list of the names of problem files to save you time searching blindly for them. I use Yummy FTP and they now have a Lite version which only costs $1.99 from the app store...

When I open iTunes on my new computer using the .itl file, and using the same external drive holding the songs, all of the songs I added to iTunes up to a certain date have broken links, while none of the songs have broken links on the old computer.

I want to open the iTunes library on my new laptop with all the playlists and stuff I built on the old computer. I have all my music on an external drive. I have copied the .itl file from the old computer and opened it on the laptop, and it has all the playlists, but all of the songs that were added to iTunes up to a certain date have broken links. What am I doing wrong?

Moving library files around while leaving the data in the same place usually presents no problems. Moving the data around independently from the library usually breaks things. With Windows machines all you should need to do is make sure that the same drive letter is being used on the new system as with the old. If that is not possible you need to get your library into a portable layout before moving it between systems.
Typical layout of iTunes folders:
When the media folder is inside the main iTunes folder as shown above then the library is portable. Typically with a split library the iTunes Music or iTunes Media folder (everything inside the red outline) is moved to a different drive by choosing a new locaton for it and then consolidating.
To make the library portable again you need to copy the library files and album artwork folder into the parent folder of the media folder so that the nested relationship is recreated. (BTW If your media isn't already inside your designated media folder then you will also need to consolidate the files that are outside of it, before you copy the library files.) You can then use the hold-down-shift-when-starting-iTunes method to open the library file in that parent folder. Once the library has been opened, tested and closed you are most of the way there.
The iTunes window inherits its title from the folder holding the library files so, unless you created a folder called iTunes to hold the media folder, iTunes may now have an unexpected title when you run it. The parent folder can be renamed as iTunes, and the library opened again. Alternatively, if the parent folder is at the root of the drive, or has other data which you wish to leave in place, you can create a new top level folder called iTunes and move the library files, album artwork and media folders into it before opening and testing the library again.
If the library doesn't work after any step simply reverse it by undoing a move or rename or opening the previous set iTunes Library.itl file.
If all has gone well then the library is now portable. Once you've migrated the data to a new system you can copy the library files back to their usual internal location if you find that having them on the external drive affects performance...

Captivate 4: linked pdf file opens when published but closes project

I have linked a couple of pdf files (Live Cycle) to an Adobe Cap 4 project. When I published the Captivate file the pdf file opens and works well but once the user closes the pdf file to contine to the next slide the project closes. Does anyone know how I can correct this? (it works fine in preview but not when published) Thanks!

How exactly are you opening the PDF? If you just linked to it without choosing the "New Window" option it will replace the Captivate project in the browser window.
Perhaps you should examine the configuration of whatever is triggering the opening of the PDF. You should also review the information provided at the link below.

Links not working when published

I know, I know, this topic has been discussed before but I am very very new at this and most answers I just don't understand (I am used to visiting not building sites). Anyway, I am having a **** of a time getting some links in my webpages to work (better said, most work, some not). I don't understand, I've checked all links, no problems (not even when published locally). But when I FTP it to my host something seems to get lost in the transfer. I've deleted the pages where this problem occurs and made new ones. Doesn't help. Does any one have any idea and know how to explain the answer to me in the simplest terms? I would be so very grateful!

The correct ftp settings would be your username and password and what you use to connect to your server. If you have already uploaded your site, then these settings would be correct. If using Cyberduck with incorrect settings, you would not be able to connect to your hosting space full stop.
Anyway, you said that you were just uploading the contents? If this is the case, perhaps if some of your links do not work, then you have not uploaded all the files that you need to. If uploading the contents of your site folder, then when Cyberduck asks you to upload, or you click it under action at the top, it will ask you to select the files - normally you would go to User and then Sites and then click on your site folder. When this shows up, click on the first file that is shown and do a select all and this will then upload all the contents. Check to ensure that all the html pages are there, plus their relevant folders - these folders contain all the CSS - so for each html page their is a folder of the same name e.g. About Us.html and About Us folder. There are also feed files that need to be uploaded too.
What you can try to see if it works is to upload your whole site folder and separate index file and see if the links work when you do this. Your url will be different if you do this, but just try it and see.
The other problems when links do not work is that you could have either an image or another text box too near to the navigation menu or link that covers it up so that it will not work. Go into iWeb and check this by doing a command A to see placement and you can then move images and text boxes around if this is the case.

Links changing size and not appearing normally when published to the web

I can figure out what is happening. No matter what I do I can't get the 'main page' button to appear as it does in iWeb when published. Help!

Can you link URLs within pages when publishing a magazine using PDF file and the script create_indd.jsx?

This magazine is just a simple PDF replica of our print magazine but I want to the URLs linked when I am viewing it on the iPad and Android devices. Is this possible?

So I just checked. All that script does is place PDFs into InDesign files. InDesign treats PDFs as static artwork so my answer stands.
You’ll have to open the individual InDesign files and add the hyperlinks.

Word 2003 crashes when trying to restore broken link

We have a project that is frequently updated by the same
person. Today, as user was trying to restore broken links, Word
dies abruptly and goes into recovery mode. This happens at the
click of OK on the dialog that shows the link detail-instant death
to Word 2003. I have MS auto-updates set to manual, and did not run
the AU for December 07. A follow up message occurs asking if I want
to save robohelp.dot (located in C:\Docs and Settings\...) We have
not had this behavior before, have not done MS updates since April,
just because RHO was working. I am just looking for a few
suggestions, I guess, and perhaps help in ruling out RHO X5 as the
culprit here. P.S. Our typical work setting is that the user
accesses the files from a network drive as works on them across the
network. We are a small shop and low-latency on our network. Just
to check, I copied the directory with the project files to the
local drive and tried same operation, received same result - Word
dies and recovers. Am wondering now if I should restore from tape
and see if corruption occurred. Thanks!

The AdobePDF printer dialog is still showing errors with printing each document, but the PDFs are created and saved regardless.
