Broken MacBook Air display-Sell/fix?

My screen cracked a few months ago on my late 2010 MBA (base model). Everything else works (via external monitor in clamshell mode)
Should I sell it as a MBA with a broken display or sell it part by part?
I'm being offered $100 and nothing more (through craigslist). Is that a bit ridiculous? Can I take it apart sell the parts themselves--or perhaps refurbish it?
Would you let it go for $100?

Make an appointment with a Genius at the nearest Apple store.  Show the computer to the Genius, and ask about "fixed price repair".  If the Genius concludes that the damage is not caused by you, you will be in for a very pleasant surprise.

If you just bought the external Thunderbolt Display, you may be able to return it for the LED Display.

I'm suffering from a reconnection problem which impacts my ability to use mirroring of my Macbook Air display on my iMac display. Both are using Yosemite OS and sharing the same bluetooth peripherals via the iMac. This did not happen much before Yosemite but I get a Reconnecting display about once every 15-20 minutes now when I am accessing my macbook in a session. Connection to the Macbook Air via a Thunderbolt cable also seems a little flaky, may or may not connect. Often improved by opening (waking) up the macbook if no response. Occasionally I get a Failed to Authenticate Macbook Air error which appears to be a hard error, typically after not having been using the laptop for sometime, e.g. overnight!

Yes but there's no point doing it here. As the Terms of Use make quite clear this is a User to User forum. It's Users like you talking to other Users. It's not a channel to communicate with Apple.

  • Broken hinge on a Macbook Air - how to fix it?

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Air which has worked perfectly all this time, but a few days back one of the hinges broke. The system still works fine, but opening the lid seems to strain the body structure. Upon opening the bottom cover, I noticed that a wire is running through the broken hinge, which seems to be getting strained when opening and closing. I'm presently in India and I took it to an authorized service store, but they said that it requires a screen replacement and I think they're just trying to "upgrade" the repair to a more expensive option!
Has anyone faced this problem before or can recommend what parts should actually be replaced? I don't want to do it myself, but I want to go into a better service center armed with details on what they have to do!
    Thanks,
    Sid

    Relatively a cheap fix.

  • New Macbook air display being washed out -- faded colors.

I have a new 2012 intel i5 128 running Lion 10.7.2. I have tried every adjustment that I am aware of: contrast settings; color calibration; brightness. But the display just looks faded. Next to my older Macbook Pro it looks really bad. I read on other blogs that several people have reported the same problem but there doesn't seem to be any solution. Advise?
    thx,
    Malthus

I have been researching the macbook air as I'm thinking of buying one. I found a story that the display can be made by either Samsum or LG. And the LG may appear not as good, but it is a matter of fixing some obscure settings, not really an LG hardware deficiency.  See:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/10/30/how-to-check-for-an-lg-display-in-a-macbook-air-a nd-make-it-look-better/
(this is not the only article on this topic)
It all seems to involve hairy command line stuff however, so I suggest you google around the topic (macbook air LG versus Samsung displays) a bit more and be ready to restore your system if you try it and it ends in tears.
    Good luck.

  • Turning off Macbook Air Display when using External Display on Lion

I had been searching the web and the community forums here for a few hours and finally figured out how to turn off the display on my Macbook Air 2011 running lion and using an external monitor.
With Snow Leopard all you had to do was plug in the external monitor to your MBA then close the lid and wake up the MBA while it was closed. Then you could open up the lid and it would stay off so it would have better air flow and wouldn't get too hot and run the fan all the time.
But ever since Lion, they screwed that up for us.
But after all my searching I finally found someone here give the fix on a MBA.
All you need to do is use a little magnet and put it where the MBA
Special thanks to ronaldfromjakarta and wv636 for giving the answers and workaround until Apple fixes this oversight
"I found a solution for this.. my solution is to put a fridge magnet directly right to the return key (about 2 cm away from the right usb port)... so the laptop thinks the lid is closed and so the display is off.. lol.. try it.. it works.."
You can read more about others using this here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3192733?start=0&tstart=0
In this example I used a big yellow magnet just to test it out, but I will be using a small thin magnet for regular use so that it wont mess up my screen if I accidentally close the lid on it.
Also I put a small piece of paper between the magnet and my MBA so that I wont scratch my MBA.
Some will also ask if it is safe to use a magnet on your MBA etc. You are only placing a magnet where the magnet from the lid would go anyway's. Just make sure you don't use a super magnet or something and you should be all good ;-)
    Here are the image examples:
    MBA is powered on
    MBA is now asleep
Just place the magnet right next to the "Enter/ Return" key
(Note: I used a small piece of paper under the magnet to protect from scratching my MBA)

  • MacBook Air Display problem

MacBook Air (Rev A Intel graphics) running Snow Leopard. After several hours of (mostly) browsing, background of the display showed distorted images (like false colour images). This was in the menu bar (which was unreadable until you clicked on it, whereupon drop down menus were OK), and a few other areas. Dashboard showed distorted images. So did bring up the task swap selector (the icons were not recognisable). Any foreground application would overwrite distortion with correct image, however the distortion appeared again when window was moved.
I initially suspected display cable damage by the hinge, but moving the display did not change things. Rebooting Finder made no difference. Alas, I failed to try fast user switching. Problem disappeared upon a reboot (I still have Windows habits - who would have thought!)
Has anyone else seen a similar fault? I am coming round to suspecting Snow Leopard rather than hardware.

    Hi Eric,
I have two machines with the Intel GMA X3100 (MacBook Air, Rev A & Santa Rosa MacBook) and both are running like champs under Snow Leopard. I have not noticed any distortion or other "oddities" since upgrading both of these machines within the first week of the OS's release.
I'd be curious to have you downgrade (make a clone or TM backup of your Snow Leopard build) and see if the issue magically goes away upon downgrading to Leopard. If it does, it'd be worth reaching out to Apple on for an update. You're entitled to 90 days of telephone support with the purchase of a new OS.

  • Will new Macbook Air display browser in 1080x1920 on HDTV?

I am about to buy a Macbook Air. A primary use for this will be to 1) Mirror browser content to an Apple TV or 2) Use Apple TV as an extended display. I understand the extended display feature may come in Maverick.
I have a MacBook Pro that will not screen mirror. It was 11 months old and Apple said the hardway would not support it. They almost lost my future business with that. AirParrot does not work on it either.
When I use an iPad III the screen ratio on the HDTV connected to AppleTV is 4:3 ratio when displaying an app or browser content. For some apps like netflix, the iPad goes full screen.
So, for those of you using the new Macbook Air, can you tell me if it will mirror a browser session to Apple TV connected HDTV and will it be in a 16:9 (1080x1920) format?
I really want it to act like an extended desktop so I could be displaying a browser based TV show on the TV and use the screen on the airbook to do other stuff. Does anyone know if that will be possible on the MBA or is that functionality reserved for better hardware?
Is anyone having issues with the mew MBA that seem to be common place?
Finally, I am getting the 13" model, 256GB but wonder about upgrading to the i7 processor. Its not a primary machine, no high CPU video editing but lots of screen mirroring of HD content. I do have a new Airport Extreme that can use 802.11 AC.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Umm...
Every laptop has 6bit colors. There aren't any 8bit laptop panels that Apple could use infact. Except for some very new 17" ones...
The thing is, 8 bit panels use more power and are regarded by most of the industry as overkill for laptops.
Anyway I repeat, there are no 13" 8bit panels in existence.
You want 8 bit color? Plug in a CinemaHD or a Dell VA or IPS panel.

  • New Macbook Air - display issues after waking from sleep

I have a 1 day old Macbook Air 13" (2013) --- when I wake the machine from sleep, the display shows horizontal / vertical bands for a couple of seconds before clearing up to show the desktop. Please see attached picture. This doesn't happen 100% of the time but I've been able to repeatedly replicate this at intervals. Does this seem like a hardware problem or an OS related issue? Thanks.

    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Since you just bought it, contact Apple about making an exchange within 14 days or repair after 2 week period.
    peace.

  • Applied pressure on Macbook Air display, what to do now?

    Hi,
I was trying to apply screen protector on my macbook air when i must have applied more than average pressure on the screen to remove bubbles,
i didnt notice anything later, but now i see small clouds which are brighter than the rest of screen, they are only visible on black or dark grey backgrounds, and not visible elsewhere. The clouds are not that much visible, but there seems to be something when there is black or grey background. And feel more or less apparent when turning the angle of screen.
I m worried as ****, as i gathered the huge some of money in more than a year.
Can these clouds heal themselves over time?
should i worry about anything else? I mean could they get worse? or could anything else happen to the display? I just bought the macbook 2 days ago.
    Any reply would be great.
    Plsss Help

Only if they determine it's a manufacturing defect. Your only shot here is if it's within the original 1 year warranty. Which by the way, you have to buy Applecare within if you want it. As a student, you get a discount on Applecare and it's definitely worth having even if it doesn't cover this.

  • MacBook Air Display connection problem

Hi,I recently got a MacBook Air (late 2010) used 9my dad gave it to me ).
When I shut the computer's display it sometimes doesn't illuminate when I wake it I tried entering the password even though I can't see.
And then i can vaguely make out my desktop or the apps.I recently discovered that by moving the whole computer it would illuminarte again i'm thinking that there is a loose connection between the screen and the motherboard.
I'M RUNNING OSX 10.7.2 AND EVERYTHING IS UP TO DATE I'M VERY PICKY ABOUT THAT IF MORE INFO IS NEEDED JUST ASK.
    I would appreciate any response,

  • How to mirror MacBook Air display to iMac?

Essentially, I want to use my iMac as an external monitor for my MacBook Air. I want to be able to use my laptop keyboard to type on my iMac.

    Hi Anarachnic,
Apple has a very useful way of using the display of one compatible computer as an extra monitor for another compatible computer - such as using your iMac as a display for your MacBook Air. This is called Target Display Mode.
This article gives a good explanation of how to use Target Display Mode -

  • Macbook air display problems in vista

i got a macbook air, and i installed vista on it and it worked fine....2 weeks later i power up vista only to find the screen format is out of wack, it has 2 black lines on the side, the kind of lines when you watch 4:9 on a 16:9 screen, its basically like a square in a rectangle....i tried everything and it has not worked, could it be driver problems, or screen problems (screen is fine on leopard, its just a vista issue)
    any help is greatly appreciated

One idea, Vista has automatic update by default enabled. It could be that your graphics driver was updated from the time you installed it. What is the graphics driver version?

  • MacBook Air display in MacBook Pro

    nvm

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Only the 27-inch iMac and iMacs with Thunderbolt can be used as a monitor.
In your case, you could use a VPN application to use your MacBook Air as a monitor for your MacBook Pro, but as the MacBook Air has got the logic board damaged, you can't start it, so you can't use it as a monitor
