Broken Macbook Pro won't finish copying even with target disk mode. Help!

Hi,
I'm helping someone with a Macbook Pro 2010-11. It worked for a few years but eventually degraded last month when it wouldn't go 10 minutes without displaying the rainbow loading ball. Possibly a hard drive problem.
The owner never backed any of the computer up. I am trying to salvage their data before it's lost. The computer can power on. I have been turning the computer on and salvaging most of the data from numerous trips with USBs until it crashes, and then moving on to Target Disk Mode. The computer turns on slowly, displays the rainbow ball every minute or so, and never finishes copying or exporting anything. It still seems to be degrading.
I still need two things: One is a large folder with thousands of old OUTLOOK e-mails created on an old PC (which the owner no longer has).
Second is the folder/autobackup where OUTLOOK for Mac stores all the e-mails and settings.
I have found the folder -- I think it is the Main Identity or Office Identities. Am I correct? Will this bring back OUTLOOK on the newer Macbook Pro exactly like on the old one? I also know where the old e-mails folder is, but when I try to transfer either folder through Target Disk Mode on the newer Macbook Pro, it stops and gives me the "Some data in _____.olk14msgsource could not be read or written." AKA error code -36, halfway through the transfer.
I have tried exporting OUTLOOK on the broken Macbook Pro to a .olm, but it gets stuck halfway and gets stuck back on the rainbow ball. Then I shut the computer off. I have also tried going into the folders through target disk mode and deleting the .olk14msgsource files that are problematic, but there are too many of them.
Please help! The owner needs these files and OUTLOOK exactly like it was!
Thanks!

Tried connecting the cable?  Still won't start?
If you are still under warranty and/or have AC, call them & let them deal w/it.

  • MacBook Pro won't turn on even with green light on charger

i have a 2010 MacBook Pro. The battery has been permanently dead for years but it still turned on as long as I had the charger connected. Eventually the charger stopped working so I bought a new one. The light is green on the charger but the MacBook won't turn on now. I tried that reset thing as well as opening up the bottom and disconnecting and reconnecting the battery and that didn't worn either. I pressed the button on the side and there's green flashing lights so its definitely getting power it just won't turn on. I don't know what else to do at this point.

If so, a new battery may be the cure but bring the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a definitive evaluation first.

  • Macbook Pro won't wake up even with power adapter connected

If I use my Macbook to the point where the battery completely die, it will not power up again even with the power adapter connected. It takes about 15-20 minutes of charging before it will wake up again. It seems as though it can't draw power directly from the adaptor, but must wait until the battery is sufficiently charged, and draw power from the battery. I can't imagine this is a design decision. Any help?

Part of this time may involve attempting to read a damaged sleep image file, bewlatbrutha.
You should note, too that the batteries in these computers have a built in microprocessor of their own to try to prevent them from being damaged by discharging too deeply. If you discharge to the point where even the battery's own processor has to shut down you may never be able to resurrect your battery without outside help (and sometimes not even then). Almost all Lithium Polymer and Lithium Ion batteries (regardless of what they are fitted to) have this sort of protection. The battery has to have a certain minimum charge at all time to keep its own processor running.
Even without reaching this point it is not good for Lithium batteries to be regularly discharged to the point where the computer has to sleep or shut down. You risk severely shortened battery life if you do this regularly.
    Cheers

Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • Safely copying files from Target Disk Mode to External USB. Advice?

Just got a new iMac and transferred my system and important files to it from my old iMac. However, a partition on my old iMac has files I want to move to my new iMac so they can be included in Time Machine backups while others I want to move to another external hard drive since I have physical copies of most of those files elsewhere.
I can connect my old iMac to the new via Target Disk mode and copy the critical files from Mac-to-Mac easily and quickly enough. What I want to know is if I’m safe to copy the other files from the TDM-connected iMac to a USB drive.
I’ve read that having other devices connected to your Mac while another Mac is connected via TDM can result in corrupted files. Is this true? Is it unsafe to copy files from a TDM Mac to an external USB drive?
If it is safe, is it best to connect the USB drive to the new Mac or to the old one while it’s in TDM? There’s a lot of data so I’m wondering about transfer times. One method would see files going over Firewire through the new iMac to a USB drive, while the other would go from TDM-connected Mac directly to a USB drive connected to its own USB port. That is:
TDM iMac > New iMac > USB Drive connected to New iMac
    or
TDM iMac > USB Drive connected to TDM iMac
I have limited space on my internal drive and I also don’t want to copy-hop from TDM iMac to New iMac then copy from New iMac to USB drive. I'd like to go directly from old drive to external USB drive if it's safe.
So I’m looking for advice on the best way to connect devices in order to cut down on copying time and number of copies, and to do it safely without corrupting data. Any advice is appreciated!

I've used Migration Assistant already to move all of my immediately necessary data and settings over. This other data was on a separate partition and I'm unable to copy all of the data over to my new drive due to lack of space.
Things are complicated by the fact that I need to change some of my externals over to Time Machine ready backups. Previously I was using 1 TB and a 2 TB drive for TM and another 2 TB drive for general backups/archiving. Now I need to juggle things around so that both 2 TB drives are for TM and the 1 TB is used for archiving.
An important point I should have mentioned is that I can't use my old iMac normally due to a GPU problem that seizes the system up. This is the reason I can't just copy stuff directly from old iMac to external USBs.
I'm interested to know if what I described above is safe and if there are any time savings or benefits for copying through my new iMac or connecting the externals directly to the old iMac in TDM.

  • Macbook Pro won't finish loading after boot and password

Right after I installed McAfee Virus Scanner for Mac and restarted my laptop it won't load all the way after I put in my pasword. It's stuck on the space screen that comes pre-installed, right before my desktop appears. I went into safe mode and dragged the new application into the trash and did the disk utitlity. It finished an it says the disk is ok. The battery is charged. Is there something else I need to fix? What is going on?

You have a hardware failure. Could be the drive itself or as has happened on a lot of 2009 model MBPs the cable that goes from the drive to the logic board has failed.
For either you will be better off taking it into an Apple G Bar and having it looked at. Note to the Apple staff that it may be the cable and not the drive.
If you are in the mood to test it yourself then remove the drive from inside the case and connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and at stratup hold down the Option key and select the USB connected drive as the Boot Source. If the system boots off the drive then it is the cable. If it doesn't boot off the drive or the drive isn't even listed as a boot source then the drive has failed. Whichever one it is, Replace that part.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot AT ALL with USB HD plugged in

This is a recent problem and I don't know if it's an issue with my external HD or the macbook. I have a Western Digital 500GB MyBook HD that I use for Time Machine. When I reboot my computer with the hard drive plugged in, it hangs endlessly when booting up before the apple even appears. The startup chime comes on, and the screen turns color, but it does not get farther than that with the hard drive plugged in.
Additionally, if I unplug the HD, let the computer boot, and plug it back in when it's booted, the HD won't mount and I get the error in the console that a USB device has not responded for 5 seconds and is timing out. This repeats over and over again. To get the drive to mount again, I have to unplug the USB, unplug the power to the drive, and then plug the power back in, and then plug the USB back in.
Doing this, the drive will work normally again until my next reboot. I have tried Disk Utility's verify disk and it has found no problems.
    Any suggestions?

I've recently been having the same problems, maybe within the last week or so... My Macbook pro will chime, get to the blue screen and sit there... until I either unplug or plug in a usb cable. My external drive is a Hitachi Deskstar 500GB. I've repaired permissions and such... I have noticed that I can boot into Safe Mode with ease.. so, there is something happening here, I just don't know what.
Any ideas would be wonderful, thanks in advance.

Also, question for Mikooster... did your problem start after installing Office 2008 ? I'm curious, that's the only recent thing I've installed that I can remember.

  • TS3423 17" macbook pro won't start blue file with question mark is all that appears on the screen

My old macbook pro will not start up. Worked fine yesterday, today all I gat is the startup sound and a blank blue screen. After a while the screen shows a file folder icon with a question mark in it. Any ideas

Question (?) Mark, Blinking Folder, or Gray Screen at Startup
These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by:
Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
    Boot From The Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. • Macbook Pro won't start/HD not showing in Disk Utility

Hello, this problem is probably detailed elsewhere but i'm not finding anything that seems to fit.   Thanks in advance for the help.   My 2010 era Macbook Pro w/Maverick isn't starting up beyond the gray screen.   I tried resetting PRAM and starting up with the install disc to run disk utility, but none of the actions to verify, repair, etc were available.  Restarted and now the drive doesn't show up at all.   Any suggestions?
I'm hoping to at least get it started so I can run Time Machine again -- been traveling and haven't updated in several weeks.
    Thanks, -Tess

    Tess,
since you have Mavericks installed, you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the  OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, is your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”) shown? If so, select it. On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode.
When you’d run Disk Utility from your grey installation DVD, did it show your internal drive on the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window?

  • MacBook Pro won't recognize 10.5.6 Intall Disk

I'm trying to install Leopard (10.5.6) on my 15" MacBook Pro (C2D, 2.33 GHz). As per the install directions, I'm booting off the internal HD, then inserting the Leopard DVD. When I put in the disk, the drive clicks and whirs a bit, spins up for a few seconds, then spins back down. After repeating this cycle a couple of times, it finally spits out the disk.
I thought I got a bad disk, so I tried it in my G5 Imac - it also choked on the disk. I returned the disk for a replacement, but the replacement is doing the same thing.
If it makes any difference, this Leopard disk came as part of the family pack version of "Mac Box Set" (includes iLife and iWork).
    Any thoughts?
    John

<< Can your machines read any DVDs at all >>
Sorry, I should have mentioned that in my first post. Both machines read other disks with no problem (both audio and data CDs, and movie DVDs - I haven't located any other data DVDs to try yet). This is what led me to believe something was wrong with the Leopard install DVD. However, the new one I ordered has the same problem. What are the odds of getting 2 DVDs with the same trouble?
A new wrinkle: I just dug up my old external CD/DVD reader/burner and hooked it up. It read my Leopard disk just fine, and I got the software installed with no problem.
This points me back to my internal DVD as being the problem. But if that's the case, why does it have problems on two different machines, both of which ready anything else I put in the slot? How likely is it that my internal DVDs (on BOTH machines) are just flaky enough to fail only on the Leopard install DVD, but on nothing else?

  • MacBook Pro won't wake up from non-sleep/energy mode state

Because I at times go on instant messenger or for whatever reason do not want my computer to go to sleep, I have my energy saver system preferences set at "put the computer to sleep NEVER." However, after I return to the computer after a few hours and press the space key, the screen remains black and will not start up from this energy-mode state. I have to press the powerkey to completely shut off the computer and then re-boot it again. I have tried re-setting the PMU & the problem remains. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Try hitting Command + option + delete for two seconds.
The sleep command should bring your MBP from its deep slumber.
