Broken Mighty Mouse's

I've had two mighty mouse's break on me in a week. Both display a stuck click (10-30 clicks/sec). One occured with a new iMac, purchased early Dec. The other mighty mouse was a free standing purchase. Has anyone else wittnessed this behavior also? I'm at the point I'd like to return them to Apple.
Cheers
Gregg

"Both display a stuck click (10-30 clicks/sec)."
I've been using my mighty mouse since November with no problems. Seems rather odd both would break in the same week.
Not sure what you're referring to when you write "10-30 clicks/sec? Does either mouse stick when you click? Check this article out on Cleaning Your Mighty Mouse. You might be able to repair them yourself.

  • Is my Mighty Mouse Broken?

    Hi,
I bought my mighty mouse back in April 2006, and It has just decided to stop scrolling downwards. The scroll ball rotates and clicks when moving up, left and right, but when i scroll down, it neither clicks nor scrolls. I have tried cleaning it as shown by Apple, but to no effect.
    Is it broken!?
Thanks in advance for any feedback

    Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies - The first thing I tried was the cleaning procedure, and I have attempted it a few times sinse. I have given the ball a real good scrub, but nothing seems to be doing the trick!
I'll give it one more try, but if all else fails, is it covered for repair / replacement with the 12 month warranty?
    Thanks again

  • Mighty Mouse broken

I know it's not really for this area but I can't find anywhere else. My Mighty Mouse appears to be broken. Or more specifically, the scroll ball. Every so often it won't scroll down and feels really smooth. Those of you who have a MM should know what I mean. Usually the scroll ball has a clicking feel but it isn't and is just smooth. Its really getting annoying cos I cant find anything to fix it with. Can anyone suggest anything? Like if it just needs cleaning or a brand new mouse all together.
    Thanks
    Chris C

It's a well-known problem. I put a splash of switch cleaner (or something similar), onto a couple of layers of tissue, turn the mouse upside down so the trackball is in contact, and give it a good roll-about. If you Google the problem, there are instructions as to how to dismantle your mouse to clean the rollers, but I wouldn't recommend it until you arrive at a "kill or cure" crossroads.

  • Mighty Mouse bluetooth: scroll wheel in Vista 64 bit doesn't work

I Installed Vista 64 bit on my Mac Pro.
My bluetooth mighty mouse has been recognized as an hid mouse. It works but the scroll wheel.
I tested on osx and it works, so it is not dirty or broken.
I tried to install the drivers from my leopard dvd but I receive an error message during the installation.
I downloaded the bootcamp update for 64bit systems but when I try to install it, it tells me the software to be updated is missing.
I tried to use a recent leopard dvd a friend gave but it tells me that my system doesn't support 64 bit softwares (is a late 2007 Mac Pro).
Is there anyone who knows the answer?

You have to have a pre-2008 Mac Pro I take it.
(might want to include more in your profile)
First you need to install 64-bit drivers from Apple off 10.5.4 or later DVD or from a 2008 Mac Pro.
Might even be drivers for generic BT mice available somewhere??

I think you'll need to uninstall your current Apple services and device drivers, restart and then go with BC 2.x for 64-bit.

  • Mighty Mouse will not scroll horizontally uder 10.3.9 why???

    Hi all
I was trying out my Mighty Mouse under 10.3.9 and it's not scrolling horizontally and on Apple support sight it said that it should scroll horizontally and vertically but it just doesn't scroll horizontally why is this? I have tried it on 10.4.10 and no problem here so I know that the scroll ball works and not broken. Is it a software/hardware "glitch" under 10.3.9 or a typo in part of Apple and if not how can I make it scroll horizontally under 10.3.9????
    Thanks!!!!!
PS: Here's what Apple says in they're "Support" section:
+*If you use Mighty Mouse on a computer with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or earlier, the mouse offers the following functionality:*+
+*Primary and secondary button functions are assigned to left and right buttons respectively*+
+*Vertical and horizontal scrolling is enabled (scrolling can't be disabled)*+
+*Can activate Exposé from the Exposé pane in System Preferences*+

I believe the booklet that came with the mouse explains what features work with each version of Mac OS X (I can't remember the page - I don't have the booklet to hand at the moment); I would expect the scroll ball to work with 10.3.9...

  • Mighty Mouse scroll ball problem

I have had this Mighty Mouse for about a year and a half and the only problem has been the scroll ball. Every once in a while it won't scroll down. I was told to hold it upside down and rub the ball good with a wool cloth. Basically every time it did the trick. Now it won't scroll down anymore (it scrolls everywhere else though). Is there something broken inside? Is there anyway to take it apart? Not being able to scroll down is quite annoying and I'd love to be able to do it again.
Scrolling down, the ball moves but doesn't make the little clicking like sound like it does in any other direction. Any advice?

Hi. Sometimes using a clear spirit such as denatured alcohol (or vodka...) instead of the water suggested here
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302417
helps - but I've had one that wouldn't be fixed, and was replaced. Good Luck.

  • Wireless Mighty Mouse Refuses To Scroll Up

Hello, I have a small issue.
My wireless mighty mouse suddenly refuses to scrcoll up. I changed the batteries, reconfigured it in Sys Preferences. It will scroll every direction but up.
Do any of you fine people have an idea of what is wrong?
    Thanks

The problem is, they are not designed to be taken apart. They are stuck together with some serious glue. By the time you get it apart, the thing is already a bit of a mess with possible broken bits. And to get it back together is going to need more glue. I can almost guarantee it will look a mess by then. And thats if it still works at all after the surgery. They are quite intricate things inside, even more so the wireless ones.
I've done the job to a couple of these mice, and already 1 of them is acting up again. I dont think it will survive another operation, so it will most likely get binned and substituted with a Logitech, or similar.

  • BT Mighty mouse in apple stores

Is the BT mighty mouse available in apple stores yet, or is it still just online. By the way im in england and im planning on going to an apple store next week, and would rather buy one there then online and have to wait for it etc.
By the way, im VERY VERY happy at the moment, as I have 2 BT mighty mouses and both of the scroll wheels have broken. Someone posted a link in another thread (sorry cant remember who) and it fixed them both, so thank you!
PS sorry I know this isnt stricty about a macbook, but im going to be using it on the macbook and didnt know where else to post it.

Sorry should have made it more clear haha. I have 2 wired ones, one when they first came out, then got fed up with the scroll wheel not working, so got a new one about 2 months ago which also went funny (again scroll wheel).
Anyway, I have a mac mini and a macbook so will use the wired one for the mini (which I am selling soon anyway) and then the wireless one for the macbook.
Does anyone know if they are as heavy as the last wireless mouses? Blimey they were heavy!
Will be buying one when I go to the apple store next week. Thanks for the responses guys.

  • Mighty mouse problem

I have a problem using wireless mighty mouse.
My might mouse does not work even if I changed batteries.
I clicked system preference-keyboad & mouse, but there is trackpad instead of mouse.
I installed the sftware of mighty mouse before, and I could use the mouse well.
I did not use mouse when I was in Japan.
After coming back to the U.S., I tried to find my mouse by bluetooth set up assistant; however, I was not able to find mouse that had new battery.
    I use macbook(black) and Mac OS X 10.4.8.
    Does anyone help me?
    Thanks and Regards.

Are you sure you have bluetooth enabled? I would try replacing the batteries again and start from scratch (i.e. turn everything off and then back on again to see if this solves the problem). If this does not solve the problem you may have a broken mouse... I am not sure what the warranty terms are on the mighty mouse, but I am sure if you brought it into an Apple store they could help you out.

  • Mighty mouse not working

  • Mighty Mouse Can't Pair

    Hi,
I changed the batteries in my Mighty Mouse and returned to my computer only to find that my mouse was not working. I got out my back-up mouse, an older Mighty Mouse that is broken a bit from being dropped and was able to pair that one with the computer. Anyway, I have been trying to pair the computer with my newer mouse (the one I changed the batteries in) and it will not work. It recognizes it when I turn it on but then it says that the pairing failed, over and over again. What is going on? How can get my newer mouse back on track? THANKS!

    Hello kaitlin:
For future reference, there is a Bluetooth forum:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=145
Try trashing a preference file (com.apple.bluetooth.plist) and restarting.

  • Mighty Mouse Lost its Touch Sensitivity

After cleaning the roller ball on my wireless Mighty Mouse its lost ability to have multiple functions. I reset my preferences and still no luck. I now have to set my mouse to only have one primary click for it to work at all. I think the thing is just broken, but maybe someone can help me out.

Sorry mate, don't know. But, if you have AppleCare on your Mac, realise that that warranty extends to most other Apple products that you use with your Mac. This includes your Mighty Mouse and Apple wifi devices if you had any. If you have AppleCare on the Mac, call up AppleCare and initiate a repair which would likely just turn out to be an exchange since they don't repair Mighty Mouse.
    The number is 1-800-APL-CARE

  • Removing pairing for Mighty Mouse on non-existant computer

    Hello people,
I have a Might Mouse and today my Macbook Pro crashed and it looks like the logic board is dead and I might have to get a new computer etc. My Mighty Mouse was paired to it but as I can no longer access the broken Mac I can't unpair the mouse. Is there a way to 'force' unpair a Might Mouse?
    Thanks,
    Hamish

Barry, I know the subject can be confusing but I have an Apple wireless keyboard and Magic mouse sitting here paired to 2 Macs. I don't know about other bluetooth devices but the keyboard and mouse don't care. Pairing just tells the Mac to ignore other M/K uids and accept the input from the paired M/K.
    Captfred
Also the advice you gave him:
Go to system preferences>bluetooth. Turn the mouse off, highlight the device, delete it, and then restart. Turn the mouse on. The BT setup assistant should open and try to locate the device.
He stated that he now longer has access to that computer.

  • My Mighty Mouse is driving me mighty nuts!

Is Apple's Mighty Mouse sensitive to heat? I am getting the impression it is. After using it for a few minutes while working on an image and holding it under my hand, the cursor movement gets erratic, uncontrollable. Makes it hard to paint masks or even select something from the menu.
After letting it go for a few minutes it will work normal again, until I had it under my hand for a little while. It seems that the laser is affected by the heat radiated by my hand. Apple praises it as being more sensitive than any other optical mouse. Is that what they mean?
I use an identical mouse for my MacBook, without any problems. But I don't hold that mouse in my hand for long periods, since its only for control documents, e-mail, web and such.
Do I need a refrigerated mouse pad?

I can't comment too much on the heat issue, although if it really is responding to heat then you have a broke mouse. Maybe a broken solder joint since all the new lead free solder processes produce a much less reliable and failure prone bond than the good old fashion true lead solder (IMHO RoHS was a liberal stupidly inspired waste of time and money, because there is still nasty stuff caste into the environment when a RoHS board is improperly discarded: how about do correct recycling of ALL our garbage, and then RoHS would be completely unnecessary and we would end up with a REAL clean environment instead of just pretending we did something! OK, off my soap box .
But you might also be masking the true problem. The Mighty Mice are capacitive sensing devices. This makes then very sensitive to... your fingers for example. But it also makes they sensitive to noise. In particular, I found (and proved) that a particularly inexpensive and popular (Best Buy) phone charger produced a huge amount of low frequency noise. Many/most/all of these chargers are cheap switching power supplies, and they are often poorly designed and filtered, resulting in copious low frequency noise emissions. This noise radiated through the air and power cords and got picked up by my Mighty Mouse and drove it nuts! Made it completely unusable. Until, I discovered the culprit. Unplugged the phone charger, the Mighty Mouse was fine. Plugged it in (typically near the iMac or in its same power strip) and poof! Problem back! I ended up just making sure my charger was always plugged in on the other side of the room, distancing it from the Mouse. Apple was informed of this and they may have since added more filtering to the Mighty Mouse But it might be hard for them to filter out the switching power supply noise and also still pick up the desired signals associated with your fingers. It might just be one of those compromises necessary to have a cool technology.
So, before you send your Mouse back for replacement, make sure there are none of these nasty little switching power supplies near your Mac (they are used with almost all peripherals). Might want to get a good filtered power strip too. I now use a Tripplite Model TLP810NET which filters and robustly protects everything (AC, LAN, Coax, Phone, got mine from Digikey). This won't prevent interference from over the air noise, but it will knock out most of the over the power line noise.
    Hope this helps
