Broken mini dvi connector on thunderbolt monitor, any way to repair?

I found instructions on how to remove the LED panel from the housing, but I could but find where to get a replacement 3 in 1 cable.

Have you tried pricing the repair at an apple athorized service center?

  • Is the mini-DVI connector patented by Apple?

Does anyone know if the mini-DVI connector is patented by Apple?

I long been puzzled with Apple's fascination with wierd video connectors. It goes all the way back to Mac IIX machines with 13 pin D connectors when everything else in the civilized world had EGA or VGA D-sub connectors. Then came a slew of 7100s and Powerbooks with odd square connectors, etc.; meanwhile the rest of the world trudged on with VGA d-sub connectors.
I can see Apple was trying to capture market back when Apple-badged Monitors were a bigger piece of Apple's business. Their old moniors had captive cords that could plug directly into their strange connectors. That's not true with the annoying mini-DVI connector - MacBooks need the adapter no matter who makes the monitor. Now it looks like there's yet another new micro-DVI connector on MacBook Air machines.
There doesn't seem to be an engineering reason for the MacBook to have the mini-DVI. There is plenty of room availavle to put in a full size connector.
I think we may be looking at patent issues. Not so much Apple trying to get greedy with their own proprietary connector, but perhaps, Apple not wanting to pay the other other peoples' royalties for the more recognizable connectors.
Itwould impact sales to have no video out connector. Apple can use its own non-royaly connector, and offload the cost of the licensed connector to only people that really need it, in the form of a dongle.
We're paying premium prices for Apple products anyway, so I don't think it would be that much extra burden for us to cough up a few more dollars to have a more compatible connector.
Anybody that's worked for an A/V department has long grumbled about Apple laptops' weird video connectors. A lost video dongle for an Apple costs at least $20, whereas a standard male/male two meter VGA cord is about $4.
I rececently bought some mini-DVI to VGA dongles at a computer retailer. The Apple brand and the house brand were both $25. The house brand cable was a little longer, but not as well made as the Apple branded dongle. I bought the Apple branded dongles, suspecting they'll be a little more durable and make more reliable contact with the mini-DVI socket after repeated uses.

  • HT201365 What do I do if my wifi only iPad mini is offline? Is there any way that I can locate it while being offline or turn it online remotely or possibly use the built in GPS?.

What do I do if my wifi only iPad mini is offline? Is there any way that I can locate it while being offline or turn it online remotely or possibly use the built in GPS?.

Answer would be no unless application provided such feature. Numbers does not as far as I know.
Note that even if you have complete list of formulae used in a table, identifying formulae referencing any given cell is not simple.
E.g., cell T20 is referenced not only in
    =T20+1
    but also in
    =SUM(T)
    =SUM(20:20)
    =SUM(S19:U22)
    =OFFSET(S1,19,1,1,1)
    =INDIRECT("T"&(10*2))
In order to identify such formula, we have to actually evaluate it to see if it references the given cell. Especially such formula as OFFSET() and INDIRECT() may not be found by static parser because their parameters can be dynamic.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

  • Queer mini-DVI Connector on Late 2006 iMac

I have a late 2006 (all white) 24" iMac and a new Mac Mini. The Mac Mini runs under Snow Leopard, and has a keyboard and mouse but no monitor. A couple of days ago, I downloaded Lion from the App Store,Thinking it would come as a downloadable file I could put on the Mac Mini. However, App store's distribution process  forced me  to install Lion on my iMac over Leopard then and there. After installation,  I realized most of my regularly relied upon applications, scanner and other items were now obsolete, I knew I was in a predicament. Several days later, I'm forced to reinstall (ugh) SL on my iMac.
I believe it is possible to transfer my SL configuration on the Mac Mini to my iMac by firewire, if I have a monitor connected to the Mac Mini. Since the only monitor I have is the iMac...
My question: 1. Can I use the iMac monitor if I connect it to the Mac Mini? The connectors are HDMI (Mac Mini end) to mini DVI (iMac end).
                        2. I wouldn't be writing all this if it weren't for the fact that the miniDVI connector on the cable, while it fits the miniDVI connector on the Mac Mini, is totally different from the miniDVI connector that came built-in to the iMac. There's no way these to can fit together. What gives?

Thanks ebinellis for the link. It sent me searching and I discovered that connector is a video out port:
Apple Support Article: TA23859 iMac (Early 2006): External ports and connectors describes this port's function in exclusively output terms: "Using the Mini-DVI video out port, you can use a compatible DVI display, VGA display or projector in extended desktop or video mirroring mode with the appropriate Apple Mini-DVI adapter."  Because it is silent about any video input source, it appears my assumption was mistaken.Seems I'm slated to do another basic install of Snow Leopard and its upgrades.

  • G4 12" mini DVI to VGA external monitor does not display

I have hooked up the mini adapter cable and hooked up the VGA cable to a Dell P780, which the apple recognized. The monitor acts like it is going to come on, but then appears to go into sleep mode... The G4 is functioning as if the monitor is working.
I hooked my PC to the monitor, and it works fine.
I have tried two different monitors.
I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM...
Before I set it on fire, HELP.

Are you using the mini DVI to DVI followed by a DVI to VGA adapter? That may not work if the mini DVI to DVI adapter does not pass analog video. If that is the case, you need the mini DVI to VGA adapter:

  • Mac mini 2009 . Mini DVI - VGA adapter with Monitor LG L1953S . No sleep .

    Hi ..
Yesterday i started in the fabulous world of MAC with my brand new MAC MINI . The problem that i have is that when the MAC mini is in stand-by the monitor is not in sleep state , and i get in the monitor screen " check cable " . So i have to disconnect manually the monitor when mac is in sleep state .
I am using mini-dvi to vga adapter (original mac ) .
    ¿What is the problem ?
    Thanks a lot ...

DVI-I provides the direct Analog signals needed to get VGA using a very simple adapter.
DsiplayPort (and its Mini variant) requires a converter to produce VGA or Dual-Link DVI, and the converter must be active/powered. There is a lot of logic in those converters. It may also have additional limitations.
In general, you should hook your highest resolution, most demanding display up with the DVI to VGA adapter. If running two Mini DisplayPort displays, ALL MiniDisplayPort converters must be active/powered.

  • Slow FPS, graphics and choppy video when connected to a Mini-DVI cable to external monitor on Macbook Mid2007 4GB RAM

    Hi,
I have a Mid-2007 Macbook white. I have upgraded its memory to 4GB. Snow Leopard was working great, and I said to myself maybe it's time to upgrade to Lion.
After the upgrade all was well. However, a big problem occurs when I plug in to the Mini-DVI display port with the HDMI adapter, to connect to my Sony LCD HDTV. The whole graphics and video slow down, everything is choppy. Quicktime and VLC video playback is strobe and choppy looks like very low Frame Rate. Cannot watch anything, not HD nor low resolutions. The entire computer is slow when the cable is connected.
    Things I tried:
*VGA adapter seems to work fine - it's the digital display output that probably causes that.
*Running it through a new user.
This never happened on Snow Leopard. i'm considering to go back. However, I am wondering if there is a way to fix this minor problem.

    Update:
We solved the problem. Weird solution but now it seems to work. I plugged a VGA adpater and played with the screen rsolutions to try and watch a movie well on my LCD screen. I changed the screen resolutions but I couldn't revert back to the default settings. Pressing "Detect Displays" didn't do anything.
Here is the interesting part: When I placed back the DVI-HDMI adapter, suddenly everything worked fine!!! There was no choppy videos, no low fps, works prefect.
Something weird is going on here, but I'm happy I managed to get the DVI to HDMI to work because I was about to removie Lion and bring back Snow Leopard.

  • Is there any way to repair the ouput on an Airport Express?

My ancient Airport Express is only putting out one channel with a whole bunch of static. Is there any way to pop in a new output where the mini-jack plugs in? (I've tried a bunch of different minijack adapters, btw. It's definitely the output that's borked.)

Easiest thing to do is probably buy a digital-to-analog audio converter (see example below), and just use the optical output of the AirPort Express, which is probably still fully functional (test by plugging in a TOSlink cable and sending music to the AEx...if the other end of the fiber optic cable glows red, it's working). You can velcro or glue it to the side of the AirPort Express if you need to.

  • Any way to repair iPad that has USB -- iTunes image without a computer?

My parents‘ iPad won't boot and just shows a USB--> iTunes image.  They are using the iPad as their sole computer for a few months and are currently traveling, so they really need it. Sorry, but there is no way activate the iPad, update the software, restore, etc. without connecting to iTunes on a computer.

  • Any way to repair a corrupt ipod without losing data?

I've only had my ipod nano a few months and apparently for some reason it has now corrupted, meaning that I have to restore it and thereby lose all my songs. Does anyone know of any way that I can fix this problem without losing the data? Or can anyone recommend a service provider that can help?

You don't say which OS your iPod was formatted on. It may not be a hopeless situation if the iPod is recognized as a removeable drive in (say) Windows Explorer.

  • HP Mini 1120NR under Windows XP SP3: any way to get onboard webcam working?

I can see some 'USB video device' in My Computer but it doesn't seem to behave like webcam. And no application can detect that I have the camera onboard... No drivers for 1120NR webcam for Windows XP are listed on HP website either. Any ideas?

I just had the same problem with my MacBook. (Which I learned about because I had to reboot into windows to take a final exam. Grrrr.)
To get out of reboot ****, turn the computer off. Then zap the PRAM when you turn it back on. To do this, hold down the CommandOption+PR keys while turning the computer on. You will get a gray screen, then it will go black and reboot. After that, you should be able to get into Mac OS.

  • 2 Monitors--Any way to move menu to right hand monitor (IMAC on left)

Don't know if I'm even asking this question correctly:
I have 2 monitors with the IMAC on my left and the additional monitor on my right. It is annoying to have to scoot over to the IMAC every time to do anything with the menu. Can the menu be moved to the monitor on my right? If so, how?

In Displays System Prefs, drag the menubar on the display image over to the display on the right.

  • Is there any way to repair (re-install) the internal flash player for IE10?

    Hi eveyone,
    In short;
been running Win 8 Pro 64-bit for a couple of days now. Decided it was time to try out some software so installed  a trial of Fix It Utilities Professional (bad decision).
Installed it, played around for a bit and after a while I came up with the brilliant idea of running a registry clean/fix (insert facepalm) and some overall clean-up, just curious
    to seel the results.
Being stupid and feeling lazy, cleaned everything and didn't create a backup. Everything seemed fine afterwards. Only the internal flash player for IE 10 dissapeared
from the Add-ons list, hence the plugin itself stopped working.I've tried everything I think I've tried all the help options I could find on the Adobe site, but nothing seems to work (un-install tool,
delete files and folders, IE's security settings back to default, checked ActiveX status and permissons, reset all data and settings for IE10 etc) Something must have been modified in the registry
but I'm just unable to locate the problem. I also installed the latest beta for Chrome and that's working like a charm, no problems at all and the performance is great.
So this is the error I receive:
I'm kinda stuck now; the installer won't let me installl it because IE has a built in plugin, but it's not working in IE. It's not even visible in the add-on menu.
I know it was a pretty stupid thing to do, but I still hope someone here knows what to do. I;m kinda running out of ideas/options (not going to edit the registry myself, because you can
bet your money this will only have a negative outcome
    thanks in advance!
    edit
the last thing I can think of is that OpenOffice and Windows Live Messenger also use flash, if i'm correct. E.g. in the OpenOffice folder there is a flash.dll file. Could these files be of real
    influence?
ill copy all the current flash files and keys/values, seems the only way to clear thing ups a bit

No, you can ask questions, but you'll have to wait until someone shows up who knows the answer.
I do not have Windows 8 / IE10, so I don't know anything about it.
You may have to wait until US daytime; maybe someone from the Adobe staff knows the answer.  But you may be better off asking in a IE10 forum.
Meanwhile check if you can find any relevant information in http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/flashplayer/pdfs/flas h_player_windows8_admin_guide.pdf
