Broken Monitor...any way to switch to external display?

My monitor physically broke...long story. But, I have one of those special cables that allowed me to hook it up to my Mac...though it's nice to know that it won't switch it over, it treats it as dual screen. So I can't pull up any display menu's. Is there a manual way of switching it? I can't see my display at all...I mean at all, so I have no way of switching it over. Help, I would hate to think my Mac of a little over a year old is now worthless.

Hi,
Sorry about your iMac.
Do yo remember if you have the Display icon on the right side of the menu bar (where the Time, Sound etc shows)?
If yes, press ControlFunctionF8, this highlights the first item in the menu extras. Now press the 'down arrow' twice and press Return.
If this doesn't work, that would mean the first menu extra item is not Display.
Now press ControlFunctionF8, again. This time press the right arrow once and then press the 'down arrow' twice and press Return.
If that doesn't work either, press the right arrow one more time in the above procedure until you turn on the mirroring.
There is an also an applescript that you can run, but lets do that later.
Can you see Safari on your external display?

  • Any way to connect two external displays?

    Hello,
I have a quick question about connecting my PowerBook G4 15'' (machine model: Powerbook 5,6) to some external displays.
I am trying to connect it to both a Samsung Syncmaster LCD and my TV.
Currently, I am able to connect to each successfully, but only one at a time.
My Samsung syncmaster LCD is connected via the DVI port on my powerbook, and using the DVI to VGA adapter, since the Samsung LCD is VGA. My TV is connected via S-Video, though I do have the s-video to composite adapter that came with my powerbook if it makes a difference.
Anyways, my problem is I want to be able to use all three displays at once (the powerbook screen, my samsung LCD, and my TV), but i can only get one of the external displays working at a given time, and have to unplug the DVI (samsung lcd) to get the TV to be detected and activated as an external display.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated. If there is some adapter I need to buy to make all this work, thats fine, just tell me what it is.
Thank you for all your time.
    Regards,
    Matt Ellison

This solution was previously pointed out to me on the 17" PowerBook forum. I don't have one and don't know how well it works. Last I saw they didn't have drivers for Tiger, yet.

I expect you would hook your SyncMaster LCD to the VT Book and then use the S-Video port on the PB to connect the TV.

Where it says Any, select music

  • Tiny Hotmail - Accidentally switched to "PC view" and can't switch backnd any way to switch back

While reading Hotmail on my iPhone, I accidentally hit a button called "PC View," and my view changed to something that looks like my Hotmail on my laptop, but it's so tiny that it's illegible, and it isn't well organized for a mobile device.  But I can't find any way to switch back to the other view.  I have refreshed the window, closed it, and returned, and I've clicked on everything I can see, but nothing seems to work.  I can't use my mail with this view.  This is a stupid user error, I know, but there must be some way to recover.  Can anyone help?

I would delete this question but don't see a Delete button.  I didn't exactly get an answer to the question, but did learn that I should set up Hotmail in a different way so that I never see the screen with the tiny text.  RESOLVED

  • Help! Any Way to use iMac's display by PC?

I currently have several PC connected to a 24" monitor. Thinking about jump to iMac 27.
Any way, adapaters, switches.. to connect PC to that beautiful 27". I just don't have space to have two displays on my small desk.
    Please help.

The 27" iMac will only work as the display for another device, in Target Display Mode, if the video signal from the other device is a DisplayPort signal. The 27" iMac works best with other new Macs with mini-DisplayPorts. Then you only need a m-DP to m-DP cable to connect the two Macs and the GPU from the other Mac drives the 27" display with its native resolution.
The problems crop up with external devices that do not have any form of DisplayPort, and so do not transmit DP video signaling. You can get converters to convert the signal from some devices to DisplayPort signaling, but this combination does not allow the other device's GPU to power the 27" display directly and folks are often upset that they cannot get the 27" display to use their device's highest resolution.
    For example, a new XBox with a converter cannot drive the 27" display at the XBox's native 1920 x 1080 resolution, just 720i, or 1480 x 720. The 27" display's native resolution is 2560 x 1440. 1480 x 720 is half that resolution.
The converters are usually US$149.00. There is a much more expensive device, a video scaler, that can assist your device to power the 27" display in the device's full resolution. They are about US$300.

  • MB switches to external display upon closing the lid - instead of going to sleep... what to do?!

Since I updated to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) my MacBook doesn't go to standby mode anymore, when i close the lid with an external display attached.
Instead it switches the external display to be the primary display and keeps on running.
It seems to me there used to be an option to choose how the MacBook reacts on the lid being closed. But as desperately as I looked fr it i couldn't find it.
Is there still any way to tell my MB that it should just power down, when i shut it, even with another display attached?
Hopefully it is just hidden away somewhere in the preferences... would be really stupid if Apple had taken that feature out...

  • When sharing screen from work with my home computer, is there any way to turn off the display at home?

Hi, sorry if this is a silly question, but when I'm viewing my desktop on the home computer from work (as in I've connected by finding my computer in the finder and hit the "Share Screen" button - is there any way to turn off the display at home? It seems a bit of a waste of power to have the screen on when I'm not actually there - I just need to be able to see all my programs etc on the remote screen in order to use them. My home computer is a 2011 iMac running latest Mountain Lion, work is a 2010 MacBook Pro.
    Thanks in advance!
    Matt

I've set up another user on my home Mac and left that one logged in. Now when I connect from work it asks me if I want to share the screen or log on virtually as my user. I think choosing the second option doesn't power up the screen.

  • Is there any way to switch between using two different phones?

I know when phones have SIM cards (like with ATT), you can use two different phones by simply moving the SIM card from one phone to the other and ATT is none the wiser.
Is there any way to do that sort of thing with Verizon?
I currently have an iPhone 5 but would like to start playing around with Android (I'm a gadget nut).  So, assuming I find an unlocked Android phone, is there any way to bounce back and forth between using different phones (obviously only one at a time)?

    Michael_F wrote:
So, the SIM card contains all the info necessary for the new phone to ring when called, etc?
yes, assuming the phones use the same size SIM card (otherwise, you'll need an adapter or a new SIM card; the cards are free at your local Corporate Verizon store).

  • Any way to switch phone numbers between phone lines....

I have 2 phones under my name, 1 of which has the unlimited data plan, which I currently have suspended because I don't use. I would like to upgrade my other phone because the phone I have is giving me problems, but I do not want to pay ridiculous fees and such for the data plan.  Is there any way to transfer the phone number from the phone I use to the other phone, so that I may have the unlimited plan, and also cancel the unused phone? Thanks.

There a couple of different issues you'll want to consider here:
    1) If you use the upgrade from the line you want to cancel, you will start a new contract on that line and owe a $175 ETF if you purchase a basic phone or a $350 ETF if you purchase a smartphone.  The contract is tied to the specific line (and phone
number), so you can't move it around.  If you upgrade a line, you must keep it for 24 months or pay an Early Termination Fee.
    2) Your unlimited data package is tied to the line and phone number that is currently on.  That means that if you want to use the unlimited package, you'll have to activate your new phone on that line and number.  You won't be able to get the unlimited data on the other number on your plan.

  • Is there any way to lock the HDMI display on one desktop?

    Hello!
My Macbook Pro HDMI-connection to my TV works great -- the only thing I wasn't able to figure out is if it was possible to lock the HDMI display on one desktop. I use five different desktops (spaces) and I'm using extended desktop(s) for my HDMI, but every time I switch to another desktop, whatever I'm watching on my TV switches to the extended desktop for whatever space I just switched to, meaning that my TV switches to blank screens. Is there any way that, even if I continue switching through desktops on my computer, I can keep my HDMI locked on the extended space for "Desktop 1," for example?
    Hope that makes sense. Thanks!
    -Ryan

If you disable the "Change with buttons" setting, the buttons will still control the general volume (music, games, etc) but will NOT change the ringer or alarm sound settings (keyboard clicks also fall into this category but is not mentioned). This lets you use the volume up/down buttons to change the general volume level without changing the ringer and alarm volume levels...it keeps you from inadvertently turning down the ringer or alarm volume and missing calls and alarms.
That being said, there's no way to totally disable the volume up/down buttons from doing something volume related.

  • G50 won't switch to external display

I've updated the Intel video driver to the latest, 6.14.10.4277, but I still can't get my external display to work with my G40 through the external VGA connector.  The display works with my R40, but not with my G40.  It doesn't even show anything during boot.  I'm using the driver for the Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller.  I've set the BIOS to display both on bootup, but still don't get anything on bootup either.  Any ideas?  I can't say this has ever worked, because I haven't tried it until now.

First, try resetting the parameter RAM:
Hold down keys CMD-Option-p-r on startup until you hear the second chime.

  • Is there a way to use an external display while keeping the Macbook open?

I'm trying to use my external display as my primary (and only display). I would be operating in clamshell mode, but this can lead to overheating issues. Is there an easy way to leave the Macbook open but turn its screen off manually when another display is connected?
I've found that by closing the macbook, plugging in a mouse, waiting for the macbook to start in clamshell mode, and then opening the display, I can do this. Is there an easier way (i.e., an option to tell the macbook display to turn off)

could you not just connect it with the vga adapter and then turn the brightness of your screen all the way down so there is no light? i had to do that for my ibook g4 when i cracked the lcd, but thankfully i have my macbook now.
