Broken mount for video card

On my digital-audio G4, while trying to remove the video card, I managed to break the green plastic ring that surrounds the AGP slot for the video card. I think its main purpose is to grab the hook at the far end of the video card, to keep the card anchored securely in the slot.
My questions --
-- Is it possible to pull out the broken ring, to replace it with another one? (I tried tugging on it, but it wouldn't come out easily.)
-- Where can I find a replacement green ring?
-- If I just leave it alone, will the one anchor screw likely keep it anchored tightly in the AGP slot, even though there's nothing to hook it to on the other end?
-- Is there some other way to anchor the far end? Duct tape maybe ?
Thanks in advance,
Timm

The hook isn't needed unless you bang the machine around. My video card doesn't even have a hook, After transporting the computer, open it an push the back of thevideo card down, if it needs it.

  • External PSU (power supply unit) for Video Card

Hello guys. My 7979 6gb Radeon card arrived, but my Mac Pro only has 6-pin connections for video cards and two molex inputs, when my video card needs two 8-pin ports (or four 4-pin molex ports, 2 for each 8-pin), since I tried running the card simply using one molex for each 8-pin port (the card just turns off when I try to load a graphic intense video game, but otherwise runs) and it fails. To solve this, I am purchasing new psu tomorrow morning at best buy. 2 questions
    1. Since this psu will be external and not a replacement for the Mac pro psu, do I have to connect anything from the psu to the motherboard, or do I simply plug it into the wall outlet, and then plug the video card 8-pin cables into the psu ?
    2. The "requirements" on the video cards website says that I require a 500 watt CPU. But I believe this assumes a 500 watt CPU that is powering the whole computer (fans, ram, hard drives etc), so does that mean that getting a 430 watt psu will be fine since its exclusively for the video card? I read online that at max usage, the card only uses about 370 watts.
    Thanks

The PCI-e bus can provide 75 watts, as can each of the two 6-pin auxiliary power connectors, so you only need a 150 watt supply.  It is possible to mount it internally, below the optical drive.

  • Updating Drivers for video card?

I have a G5 Quad with an Nvidia Geforce 7800 GT video card (installed by Apple at the time of purchase). I wanted to see if there were any new/updated drivers for my card, but when I go to Nvidia's website the card is not listed, nor are any Mac drivers that I can see. I checked Apple's site, CNET Downloads, and Google, but I'm coming up with nothing.
How are the drivers for video cards updated? Are the drivers included in various OS updates? Am I just looking in the wrong places?
    Thanks.

Thanks, maclover. And thanks for the warm welcome
My problem is specific to a piece of software... I'm using Lightwave, and recently added FPrime to Lightwave's functionality. FPrime is a third party plugin, and is widely used in the Lightwave community.
The problem is that if I open FPrime before OpenGL renders the objects in a scene on screen FPrime crashes (hard)... it's like a kernel panic and my only option is to shut down and reboot. However, if I let OpenGL render the objects first then FPrime opens fine.
I'm an active member of the Lightwave community, and I've been in contact with the maker of FPrime regarding this issue. My question about drivers stems from the fact that usually if something like this occurs then it may be related to the need to update card drivers.
    Thanks agian.

  • HP Pavilion DV2716ca - Reduce the amout of RAM allocated for video card

    Hello,
Is there a way to reduce the amout of RAM allocated for video card?I don't play games so only 16-32Mb should be more than enough
I have 4Gb of RAM and only 2.99 are available. I know that for a 32bit OS only 3.4-3.6Gb are available.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

    Hi @adrian_d ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv2716ca Entertainment Notebook and wanted to reduce the amount of Ram allocated to your video card. I do not recommend this as this could cause overheating or overworking the card. Here is a link that might help with performance issues.
    Hope this helps.

  • Looking for Video Card

My searching through the forum answers some questions, but still wondering ...
My 450 AGP (Sawtooth) is going to get a new video card, part of an upgrading I've been doing.
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Mac 128mb? Will this work for my 450? I'm not understanding the 2X, 4X, 8X relevance.
Also, in the name of $$$, I've seen it posted that perhaps I could get a PC version and flash it for Mac. Is this straight away ok?
    Thanks for any insights.

    Hi-
The biggest limiting factor in upgrading the Sawtooth graphics card is the AGP bus. The Sawtooth has a 2x AGP bus, 32-bit channel operating at 66 MHz doubled to an effective 133 MHz resulting in a maximum data rate of 533 MB/s.
A graphics card must be compatible with this speed to br used in the Sawtooth. Current AGP cards are predominately 4x and/or 8x AGP (266mhz and 533mhz respectively), and don't work at lower bus speeds.
Signaling voltage is another factor, with 2x being 3.3v, 4x being 1.5v and 8x being 0.8v. When modifying a card from PC to work in a Mac, and to make a faster card work at lower AGP speeds, some cards can have pins blanked out (taped) allowing use at the higher voltages.
The reason the 9800 Pro is so often recommended, is that it is one of very few 2x AGP compatible performance cards available. From the world of flashing, the PC version of the 9800 is one of the most easily, and succesfully converted cards. Some of the last modern cards with 3.3 V support were/are the Nvidia GeForce FX series and the ATI Radeon 9500/9700/9800(R350).
The 9800 Pro, Mac version or flashed, will work in your Sawtooth. Either way, the card is plug and play in OS X, and will provide graphics performance far beyond that of other 2x AGP compatible cards.
Often mentioned, is that the 9800 requires a 300w power supply. This may be true from a manufactures "warranty" standpoint, but the card will work fine with the Sawtooth's 237w PSU. Adding a processor upgrade (single) and up to two internal harddrives will also work within the PSU's wattage. The main enemy of all, heat is the biggest concern.
Reducing heat/increasing cooling by using a third party fan is highly recommended. The 9800 is a hot card, and the stock fan is prone to early failure. Adding additional cooling to remove the extra heat produced by the 9800, by using an exausting PCI fan, will also help the PSU provide adequate voltage to the system, by reducing the amount of hot air moving out of the PSU..

  • Space for Video cards.

I've got the K210 and I know its a microtower. I've seen some people comment saying that some cards are to big for microtowers. How big of a Video card can a microtower fit?

Hey tanks for the info, another thing though, do you know if the k210 has the same MOBO as the k230? I just bought an E8500 CPU and it doesnt work, my uncle is pretty sure its because of my PSU and I hope so cuz' I was going to upgrade that anyways, but do you know if my MOBO supporst the CPU anyways?

  • Logs for video card.

    Hello,
I had a problem with the video card on my custom-build macbook pro. I ran the diagnostic test (from the instalattion CD), which confirmed the issue and reported that the card had 256mb of VRAM. I then took the machine into the apple store and they replaced the logic board. They replaced the card with one that has 128mb of VRAM and claim that this is what I originally had. I checked this with Apple on the phone, but there appears to be confusion. Apple has not explained to me why the diagonstic test would be wrong. Is there any way that I can see old logs that report the size of the VRAM that I used to have? I looked at system.log, but have not found anything.
    Thanks.

I see, Tiger makes the logs no use for that, as you say.
I can't think where else that info would be noted, although an overnight EasyFind looking for content like geforce (or whatever is appropriate for yours) would find anything there is. Probably have to use it as root to search every last hidden system folder.
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html
I haven't been able to check, since it seems the site's having problems... but I thought that maybe https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do allowed (after registering the item) seeing specs that went further than just general 'mbp 2007' and possibly included original customisation. I might be confusing it though.

  • BB and GS say these are totally accepable temps for video cards.

    http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j182/lancegtx/Capture2.jpg
Copy and Paste into your browser to view.  But GS keeps telling me that my computer is not overheating.  And that if i didnt want a computer that runs hot i should not have bought a gaming computer.  Save and open in windows photogallery to zoom into see the temps, but they are 90 and 109 celcius for the 2 video cards.  Not that this is without the cooling pad that a BB employee told me would solve all of my problems, however it is in a 60 fernheight room sitting on a cool marble countertop without anything obstructing the fans or vents  Also note that the computer shuts off a 110 celcius to prevent any damage to hardware.  Also this picture shows temps using 2 different programs, one being Nvidia's own software.  I'd like to know what you all think about these temps.

My point was that neither means anything. It's very hard to compare setups. Your temps could be 300, but if your system is running fine, nothing is wrong. With a GPU, you'll start having hangs, or at least artifacting if the temp is negatively impacting it. Also, is that core or surface temp?
If you really want me to stretch, they could be a bit high, but it would still be nothing to be worried about. You seem worried, though, so try cleaning out the vents. There may be dust in there.

  • Options for video card upgrade to quad-core G5?

What are my options? I bought the powermac quad-core G5 with the base video card (geoforce 6600); now I want to upgrade, but it seems that one cannot buy the other video cards (e.g. geoforce 7800 or quadro fx 4500) on their own, but only as a package with a new powermac. Do I have any options? The ATI X800 looks great but it is an AGP card and the pmac is PCI

So far I didn't get a card from Apple to upgrade.:-(
But on the Aperturetricks website, Scott says, that I got an upgrade.
    Don't know how.

  • Do pci slot coolers for video cards help alot?

simple, read the title, I want a better oc without ruining the warranty

I am using the Vantec PCI 2 fans thinggy that blows air to the video card from below and from changing slow to max fan speed my 9800XT shows a 3 or 4º C improvement.
I also installed a fan on top pulling air out and it also lowered the radeon's temperature at least 2º C more.
Was I able to overclock more? Probably, but just a little probably... what it really did was mantain the pc case cooler, as these new video cards are hotter than hell. My case temperature when overclocked was reduced almost 5º C because of this.

  • Looking for Video Card for Power Mac G5 August 2005

I have a Power Mac G5 built August of 2005. My ATI Radeon X850 XT G5 Mac Edition 256MB Video Card is toast. Is it an AGP card? I need to replace it. Will the  Apple G5 PowerMac ATi Radeon 9600 XT 128MB Video Card ADC DVI Graphics work on my G5?

The 9600 XT will work, but you won't be impressed after life with a X850.
The occasional X800XT OEM can still be found.
This trusted seller has OEM X800XT cards available.
Might get a bargain in this auction.
X850XT cards are dear when available.
IMO, the performance difference between X800 and X850 doesn't really justify $100...
    http://www.barefeats.com/radx800.html
If you don't need the ADC port, a flashed FireGL X3 makes a nice dual DVI X800XT .
The Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL is always a performance value.

Good day and welcome to the community.
Your factory specification, indeed shows that you have a V5250.
    ThinkPad T60p (8741-W56)
    Based 8741-CTO: T7400(2.16GHz), 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4in 1680x1050 LCD,

UltraNav, Sec Chip, FPR, 9c Li-Ion, WinVista Business
As you may have seen in your driver matrix: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?&DocID=HT063292
there is no official Lenovo Windows 7 video driver. There are some reports that folks have had success installing the Vista drivers, though.
I took a different path on my T60P (2623-DDU, ATI V5200). I installed the video driver offered by Windows update. I don't normally allow that, preferring hardware drivers to come from the hardware vendor, but in this case there wasn't much choice. My machine has been happily running this driver since the release of Win7.
    Hope this helps.

  • Drivers for video card ( Windows )

Hi! I need to update my driver for Intel 965 Express Chipset Family on Windows 8, because some games does not run ( like GTA 4 ). Currently I have v8.15, but the newest is v10.*. I contacted Intel, but they have drivers only for PCs. What can I do?

  • Upgrade video card for Late 2005 PowerMac G5

I am looking for an upgrade video card for a Late 2005 PowerMac G5, which has the PCI-Express slots. I need at least 256 MB of VRAM.
Since this computer is a discontinued model, there doesn't seem to be too many options for video cards. I've seen some cards like the NVidia 6600 or 6800, or even ATI's X800, but they appear to be difficult to find.
The one card that is readily available still is the ATI X1900, which looks great, but a little on the pricey side ($349).
I did notice the NVidia 7300 GT, which is more moderately priced ($145), but it only mentions being an upgrade card for the Mac Pro. Will this also work with the PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) model? I would hate to buy this video card and then find out that it won't work.

The only available upgrade card for the Late 2005 G5s is the X1900GT (aka G5 Edition). It's basically on par with the nVidia 7800GT that was available as a BTO option.
You can get the 7800GT and QuadroFX 4500 as replacement parts, but they're exorbitantly priced.
The Mac Pro cards won't work (even though they're also PCI-Express) due to the ROM on the card. It's only setup to work with the Mac Pro's EFI boot system and doesn't have the necessary code to work with the PowerMac's Open Firmware boot system.
