Broken my restore

I attempted to restore my iMac to factory defaults using the method of holding Command and S when booting.
I have managed to restore the iMac but I cannot get past the set up stages; language selection, name, apple id etc.  Being 15 and having to save up a lot to afford this mac, I am in need of some desperate help. If you need anymore information feel free to ask!  Running os x 10.6.8.
If anyone knows of any fixes I would be most appreciated!
Many thanks!
Dan

Hey DanLHiscock,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you have boot into single-user mode as opposed to restoring your operating system. You may want to follow the directions in this resource for information on re-installing OS X:

  • Web Sharing broken after Restore System from Time Machine

If you do a complete System Restore from a Time Machine backup, and had Web Sharing turned on, it won't work after the restore. The problem is the restore doesn't put back a folder for Apache logs. It should be in /var/log (or /private/var/log). Without the folder there, Apache won't start and you'll get an error when trying to access anything on the local website:
Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://localhost/control/” because it could not connect to the server “localhost”.
To fix the problem, use Terminal:
    cd /var/log
    sudo mkdir Apache2
    sudo apachectl restart
Then Apache will be happy and you'll be back in business!

The problem has gone after updated to 10.9.4

  • Iphoto and GarageBand broken since restore from backup

My main problem now is getting iPhoto and GarageBand to work. But below is some history of my problem:
My MackBook was returned today from the fixers. I had previously created an account for the engineers and wiped all the others. When I used Backup to restore it restored my account to the current engineers account! keeping the login name and password for the engineers account... at this stage a look in the finder showed me that only my account had been restored/backed up.. and as just mentioned with the wrong login details!!!!
I have resolved to wipe and reinstall OSX and then try to restore...... NO LUCK, NO copy of backup to restore from!!!! And I could not remember my airport pw (idiot!!) so couldn't download it!
Righty ho, I have the Web, Email and itunes working now.
But iPhoto & GarageBand do not start at all. What can I do to fix?
Btw I have reinstalled iPhoto to no avail.

Apple's tech support advised me to do an 'erase and install'. Then to try to perform a restore within Backup. If that failed I was asked to call back for further assistance. I was ok though and didn't need further help.
In a step by step way how things got fixed:
I booted from my OSX install disks that came with the computer, chose the option to erase the HD and perform a fresh install.
Installed the system and the bundled apps. (I did a custom install to choose only the software I wanted)
I then ran software update and got the mac up to date. Once done I tested all the Apple apps.. Restored my .mac data... all was now working YIPPIE!!!.
After that I hunted down and installed all 3rd party apps I had been using.
I used "http://www.versiontracker.com/macintel/" ...most apps I use were bought online or freeware, and the versiontracker website is the easiest route to find them all again.
I now had to get my data back. BackUp still showed it was missing although I knew my backed up files were valid.
I checked those backed up files were safe by right clicking on one of my backup packages (created by Apple's BackUp) and chose view package contents.
I then navigated my way to the "sparse image" file which will open just as a disk image (.dmg) would. Inside that I found my data from my user folder (which BackUp had reported not there). Opened up several files of various types to check such as jpegs, movies, text files and pdfs. I was not aiming to restore any applications from this back up.
I manually copied my files from the backup and put them in their relevant folders. I only copied things like my pics, movies, documents.
Ran "Disk Utility" and repaired permissions on my HD.
I Shut the Mac down and then booted up, logged in and all was fine and dandy.

  • Spotlight and Time Machine broken after restore/upgrade

I've found a few similar threads to this but none of those solutions has worked for me.
Two things happened at nearly the same time, so I don't exactly know the source of my problem:
I upgraded my old MacBook Pro (approx. Oct 2010, 2.66GHz I think, 300GB-ish HD) from Lion to Mountain Lion
The hard drive on my old MacBook Pro developed a terminal fault, so I had to buy a new one (8GB, 750GB HD) and restore a month-old Time Machine backup from my external drive.
I can't remember whether my last Time Machine backup to my external drive was before or after I upgraded to Mountain Lion.
Now I'm on OS X 10.8.2 on this new machine and I have two problems that seem to co-exist for a lot of other people too:
Spotlight won't index: this is f***ing infuriating, I love spotlight and I use it all the time. When I first restored from the TM backup I think the old index restored with the backup as I did get a decent number of search results (both in spotlight and in MS Outlook), but new files didn't seem to get recognised. I tried adding my hard drive to the exclusion list and removing it again in an attempt to get it to rebuild the index, but all that did was wipe the old index without building a new one, so now I get no spotlight results whatsoever. I tried this solution and sadly it hasn't worked either. Basically I can't search for anything. Even applications (which I like to launch from spotlight) don't appear. All I get is "estimating indexing time", and it never gets any further.
Time Machine won't back up: the first time I tried to backup my new machine it got a few hundred megabytes in before stalling; then a few hundred kilobytes in the next time I tried; and now it just doesn't get anywhere at all. The external drive I'm trying to backup to is recognised fine, I can see all the other files on it, and Time Machine seems to know that it's there, but the backup gets nowhere.
There are reports of this kinds of crap all over the Apple Support forums, but no definitive answer, especially for 10.8.2.
I could really do with some help on this. I need a backup before I screw another laptop, and I need spotlight to survive day-to-day life.
    Thanks,
    Craig

Hi Craig - I had the exact same problem - I'm using an old early 2009 MacBook Pro upgraded to 8 Gb Ram, 1 TB internal Hitachi HD, 10.8.2 - tried the fixes suggested - got it to work with these steps- everybodies mileage is different but hopefully it works for you as well.
    a) I repaired disk permissions with Onyx (free utility)  and then  started  up with Command-R using Disk Utility to repaired/check the Volume (harddisk checked out fine but the volume needed some minor repairs )- Onyx repair disk permission seems to go deeper -had to reinstall some apps - don't know if this solved it-seems to bring it back to the default state - you might get away with doing all from Disk Utility (but starting up with  Command-R)
    b) restart from my internal hd
    c) downloaded the 10.8.2 combo update ( not the incremental shell update or whatever you call it which automatically gets installed with software update - combo update installs everything fresh from the .0 version)
    d) with  Onyx  I deactivated spotlight and erased the spotlight index
    d) restart
    e) started TM backup - prep took pretty long 30 minutes but then 450 GB got backed up in 6 hours to my external HD which is fast enough for me
    f) activated spotlight and 450 Gb were indexed in 9 hours or so
    g) for 2 days everything runs fast and very responsive
    best,
    Franz

  • Mac App store broken after restoring Lion

    Here is what I did:
I deleted all the data on my harddrive, and reinstalled lion using built-in internet recovery.
    The problem:
The Mac app store is extremely slowly - to the point of non-responsive.
It won't let me install any of my applications. Clicking on the "install" button next to an item in the "purchased" section does nothing.
I have already confirmed by billing information.
There are no error messages. It just doesn't respond. It takes ages for any screen to load. It doens't make much sense - my internet connection works fine, as I can browse websites in safari without any problem.
What do I need to do to fix this? Right now there is no other software installed except the default that Lion installs.
    Thanks.
EDIT: iTunes seems messed up too. When I click on "purchased" in the apps section, all I get is a blank white screen.

when i am on my home screen or locked screen, my battery usage and service toolbar has disappeared. How can i get it back?

Yeah there's no setting for that. So either you don't have an iPhone, or your iPhone is jail broken. If it's jail broken, just restore to factory and all will be fixed :)

  • Ipad 2 not working

My Ipad works whenever it desires. The problem started 3 months after i bought it. I tried to restore/revive it by pressing start&home buttons for a long time. It worked again after 30 tries or so only to die again after some short time (hours or a few days). Then I wasn't able to restore it again so I took it to the store where I bought it. They sent it for repararation only to send it back to me and charge me repairs cost since they found it was not broken and restored it (wiping all data).
A week or two later the problem starts again, i can revive it after multiple tries but it dies again. And so on, so i have a functioning ipad for 2 days and then it dies for a a few days. During this time i travel between 2 countries were the weather differs greatly. I start to think that the problem has to do with hot weather and the battery since the time it stays dead seems to be related to the battery time remaining when it died. And it always stops working in the hot climate country. I travelled back to the colder climate country and voila it started working again and never died for 3 months. I recently travelled to the warm climate country and guess what, same thing all over again.
My question is has anyone had anything similar to this strange problem. I know the weather thing seems strange but it's the only explanation based on my observation. I'm left with a product that i can use 20% of the time i should be able to use it. I also would like to know if there is anyway to fix it.
It should be mentioned that i bought 2 ipads at the same time and the other one is working without problems.

Not normal. Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation.

  • Check Links reports orphan files that do exist

With CS3 9, I ran a Check Links for Entire Current Local Site
and it is reporting orphaned files that are definitely being linked
to. The problem is demonstrated by a SWF with 5 thumbnail images,
each linking to a .htm file. All 5 .htm files are in the same
folder, same URL aside from the filename and the SWF works fine...
but Check Links reports that 3 of the 5 .htm files are orphans. Has
anyone seen this problem? Any suggestions?

  • How do I restore my ipod to factory settings, but I have a passcode lock, and my screen is broken so I can't type in my password when I connect to itunes?

Okay so I have had my ipod 4th gen for almost 2 years buy the screen has fallen out of the back casing, (I bought it as refurbished) and I am trying to reset it to factory settings, so when I get a new one I can register my device on apps/games since some apps require that you can only register on one device, but I think the thing that connects to the screen is ripped so the screen won't turn on and I can't physically touch it. What I want to know is how can I restore it with me not being able to type in the password lock since the screen is broken?
or is there a way to disable the passcode lock through the computer?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • TS1441 How can I restore an iPod touch if the home button is broken and I don't know the password?

I just bought my iPod Touch (4th Generation 8GB) from my friend and the home button doesn't work. Then, my parents took it away for about 6 months and I just got it back and I forgot my password. Then, I tried to get in too many times and now it says "iPod Disabled Connect to iTunes". Then, when I connect it to iTunes, it says for my to put in my password so it can connect. I've been trying to get back in but haven't found a way to restore it. HELP!!!!!
P.S. It's jailbroken, but the damage isn't due to Cydia. Also, I can't put it into DFU mode since the home button is broken.

Actually, I can give it to someone who fixes jailbroken iPod touch home buttons, but I don't want to pay anything. Also, if you just have something to say to me that will kill me, don't say it at all dude.

  • My iPod Touch 2g is unresponsive to the touch completely. I have restored it twice and updated it, the water sensor shows it has not been wet. Not jail-broken.How do i fix this and will Apple fix it? Thanks

I have restored it twice and updated it, the water sensor shows it has not been wet. Not jail-broken and exterior buttons all work.  It seems to have problems connecting and being found by a computer (Windows). How do i fix this and will Apple fix it? Thanks

lol yea when i inserted the link i just copied and pasted thats why that happend... Lets try again... http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
Anyways when I go to it theres a drop-down list and you select the one you want and I know the number next to it identifies the model but the thing is they don't have my model listed so my main question is, what version eg. 2.1.1. or 2.2.1 etc. etc. etc. etc. will work with my model of ipod touch which is the 2g Model A1288?
Does anybody know? Does it work with any firmware thats for 2G ipod touches or do i have to get firmware thats model specific?
