Broken PDF?

First of all, first post, so nice to meet you all, and nice to be here as well.
So here's the problem. I've been creating some pdf for my college assignment. Needless to say, Adobe Acrobat was one of the first choice for creating pdf. Therefore, i chose it.
Everything seems to be fine, until i saved the pdf, then exits Acrobat. The next day, i open it, and find tons of faulty everywhere:
- Missing letters on random places
- One big textbox turned into one textbox per line
Of course, i did not notice that until i prints it. Minus marks everywhere.
So i need help about this. I dunno what i did wrong.
I found several similar case in the forum, but they're either importing pdf, combining pdf, or exporting.
In my case, i'm editing a pre-existing pdf.
This happens more than once, and it's getting annoying to edit. Please help.
Here's the PDF i've been working on: Dropbox - Desain Pasif David Christian 1305003137.pdf

This file works fine for me in Acro 6.
Cheers, OTN

  • Broken PDF to printable CMYK tiff/pdf ?

Hello, my problem is the following I just got this broken (corrupt) PDF file, as in the image below. I googled a bit and noticed that I can save as-image- and save the image as a tiff and it displays properly ( unbroken ) the only problem is that the colors are in RGB value ex I have black texts which are like 76/80/53/123 (CMYK) instead of 0/0/0/100(CMYK) ; I've tried messing around with the TIFF settings to convert colors to CMYK or use a CMYK profile but nothing seemed to work; My question is can i somehow work something out of this w/o deleting the text with acrobat and retyping the whole thing ?
As you can see in the image below there are small lines that brake the image so basically im tryin to find a solution to this. Thank you

If you look carefuly on the main title, also left a bit you'll notice small lines which apparently appear on the print aswell .So far If i open the PDF with PS they still appear over there but if i save a TIFF from the actual acrobat they wont BUT the black on the text letters isnt 1 color (0/0/0/100) , but 4 (x/x/x/x/ some random convertion from RBG to CMYK ) which is a big problem for me .

  • Adobe Reader XI - Broken PDF association

    Hello,
My aim is to leave Adobe Acrobat as the default PDF handler if Reader is installed after Acrobat.
When I edit LEAVE_PDFOWNERSHIP and IW_DEFAULT_VERB settings in an MST file (as shown below).
PDF association is broken. Clicking PDF files from the internet browsers generate this error message
In theory, it should work as described here -> http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/Wizard/installoptions.html, however, it seems that AR XI's PDF plug-in capability is being broken once these changes are made.
Has anyone been able to circumvent this?

Not possible with Adobe Reader. With Adobe Acrobat you can print to Adobe PDF.

  • Broken PDF Bookmarks from Word doc with Headings

This used to work with older versions of Acrobat Pro (I have the latest version of Acrobat 8 pro). I just author a Word doc which has headings, and then I use the Acrobat menu in Word to create the PDF, making sure "Create Bookmarks from Word Headings"is selected.
The resulting PDF does indeed have the PDF Bookmarks there correctly, but they do not point to the locations of the headings in the actual document. In other words, they're not really bookmarking anything.
Can someone confirm the workflow that is supposed to ensure the bookmarks will actually point to the heading locations? What else could be wrong?
Thanks in advance! Attaching source word file (rename xml extension to docx) and resulting PDF file.
    SK

Thanks Bill. I am using 8.1.4, and Word 2007. Don't really want to downgrade though (it's been around for several years now). One thing I've been wanting to try is re-installing to the latest PDFMaker COM Add-in (PDFMOfficeAddin.dll), but I don't know how to. The add-remove programs doesn't seem to allow me to re-install individual components.
Just to confirm, the PDF bookmarks are meant to point to the Word heading locations, correct? I was wondering if you could try converting the Word file (just rename the .xml extension to .docx), and looking at the resulting PDF bookmarks. If they work as expected for you, then it's definitely something about my particular system configuration.
The Word headings to PDF bookmarks feature is so basic, and Word 2007 has been around for several years now, if there was a problem with it I'm sure there would be a fix from Adobe by now.
    Thanks for any further insights!
    SK
PS - Are other people experiencing the issue I am running into? Trying to gauge if this is a common problem...

    How to avoid this?

Open the document first as a PDDoc, then convert to an AVDoc. Use an error

    cannot be opened.
    pdDoc.Open("c:\test\dummy.pdf")
    pdDoc.OpenAVDoc ("")

  • Scanning always produces invalid PDF files

I recently purchased an HP OfficeJet 4636, and I notice that when scanning documents to PDF, the generated PDF files are always invalid. When opening these files in Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Pro, one gets the message "The file is damaged but is being repaired." Many other PDF tools can't open the files at all.
I have installed the newest firmware update and restarted the printer, but the problem was not solved.
I tried many different settings (e.g., resolution, paper size, scan from ADF, scan from Glass), but the problem is always the same. For the record, I am using the "Web scan" interface: http://XX.XX.XX.XX/#hId-pgWebScan.
If there were an opportunity to attach a file to this bug report, I would attach an actual PDF file generated by this printer. I am happy to supply the file later, and I will refer to this specific file in my analysis of the bug below.
I am familiar with Adobe's PDF definition:
PDF Reference, sixth edition. Adobe Portable Document Format
Version 1.7, November 2006. Abobe Systems Incorporated.
I examined the PDF file in detail and it is quite clear what the bug is. Object 1 of the PDF file starts at byte offset 10, and it is a stream object containing the main image data in compressed JPEG format. The Length field for the stream object (at byte offset 168) is set to 1051875. However, the actual compressed stream data is only 64914 bytes long.
This is incorrect, because the PDF Reference (Section 3.2.7, p.61, "Stream Extent") specifies that "If the stream has a filter, Length is the number of bytes of encoded data." (emphasis in original). In other words, the stream length should be set to 64914, which is the length of the JPEG encoded data, and not 1051875 (which is presumably the length of the raw unencoded image data).
Moreover, four of the entries in the PDF xref table (at offset 65504) are incorrect:
    the byte offset for object 2 is given as 1052085 (actual location of object 2 is 65124);
    the byte offset for object 3 is given as 1052140 (actual location of object 3 is 65179);
    the byte offset for object 4 is given as 1052206 (actual location of object 4 is 65245);
the byte offset for object 5 is given as 1052383 (actual location of object 5 is 65422).
Also, the PDF startxref pointer (at offset 65674) points to 1052465, whereas the actual location of the xref table is byte offset 65504.
Note that in all six cases, the error is exactly equal to the difference between the declared stream length (1051875) and the actual stream length (64914):
    1051875 - 64914 = 986961
    1052085 - 65124 = 986961
    1052140 - 65179 = 986961
    1052206 - 65245 = 986961
    1052383 - 65422 = 986961
    1052465 - 65504 = 986961
It looks like this is a simple programming error in the printer's PDF generation software: all the offsets are computed as if the length of the embedded image stream were 1051875, whereas it is actually 64914.
I scanned at different page sizes, resolutions, and so on. Each time, the actual byte offsets were slightly different (depending on the length of the encoded image stream), but the above relationships still hold in each case.
Please fix this! It is not really acceptable for an HP scanner to produce broken PDF files. Thanks, -- Peter

    Hi @Selinger
One of the important things to point out is that the Webscan feature was designed for diagnostic purposes. The intended method of scanning is with HP software and the software build into the OS.
For Mac users this includes Apple Preview, Image Capture, or scanning from the Print and Fax Window.
For Windows users, non HP software includes, Windows Live Photo GAllery, Paint, and Windows Fax and Scan.
Webscan is a great alternative, but it is very basic. Your best option it to install the HP software and us the HP Scan program.
If there is a particular reason you are using Webscan and prefer to scan this way, the only thing I can really suggest is to try a different browser.
Please let me know the outcome of a different Browser, what Browser you are currently using, and what happens when you scan with HP software. If you require further assistance, please also include your operating system. What operating system, and version do you have? Mac or Windows?
    I hope this helps.

  • PDF with garbled text after editing on a Mac

Hi all, hope someone can help. I'm struggling to get to the bottom of a very bizarre issue. I have a number of PDFs that were originally created using ABBYY's FineReader OCR software. They display fine, and I can "copy" text from the documents to the clipboard with no issues.
However, as soon as I bring them over to the Mac side and make a change to the document using OS X's Preview, things go wrong. As soon as any changes are made, I can no longer copy text from the document to the clipboard - the text that ends up on the clipboard is garbled. However, the display text is still perfectly legiable.
For example. here's a link to a very simple and basic PDF document, that was originally a perfectly fine PDF but became mangled.
    Broken PDF
Using Acrobat I've removed all the graphics and most of the text from the document, leaving just a single text box ("AUTUMN SPECIAL!").
So if I highlight the text on the page which reads:
    AUTUMN SPECIAL!
what ends up on the clipboard is:
    *)﴿*%& (﴾'"!# $
I've done a whole ton of reading about the internals of PDFs and I'm pretty certain that this is something to do with the CMAP character-to-glyph mappings; but I've no idea what to do to fix it. Acrobat's PreFlight check for the PDF/A 2a standard tells me:
"Text cannot be mapped to Unicode"
"Type 2 CID font: CIDToGIDMap invalid or missing"
Also, an inventory report (available here) shows the letter "A" being mapped to a space, letter "C" to a exclamation mark etc - all obviously wrong. However, "Analyze and Fix" won't fix the problem
Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? I know it's definitely a bug somewhere on the Mac side and the obvious answer would be to avoid editing documents using OS X Preview, but unfortunately I have several hundred documents in this state. Is there any way to fix the mapping, or otherwise return the text to a state where it can be accurately copied from the document?
Thanks very much in advance for any help or advice given.

I doubt you could fix this. Generally a "garbled" file is considered unusable for copying, and that's that. If a PDF uses random mappings instead of standard ones it looks fine on screen, but text extraction is impossible.
Short of converting every page to bitmap and OCRing again.

  • Proper Color Management from Indesign- PDF- Printer

I can't get my head around this problem and it's been bugging me for a very long time. Maybe you can enlighten me on this?
Right, I know (heard), that when sending a PDF document into Offset Printer, it shouldn't have embeded ICC profiles (for whatever reasons). Here comes my problem: my Indesign is set to AdobeRGB for RGB and ISO Coated v2 (ECI) for CMYK images. When I create a new document and place in three same TIFF files, but each one with a different ICC profile (AdobeRGB/sRGB/ISO Coated V2) and then export this document into PDF (Acrobat 4 PDF 1.3, no color conversion and no profile embedding (in Output tab)), only the image with AdobeRGB looks exactly like I saw it in Indesign. The image in sRGB is more saturated and the CMYK image is different as well). This is also visible after printing out this document on Xerox 700.
Now, if I export the same document into PDF and choose to embed the ICC profiles, all three images look pretty much like they do in Indesign (and even as each other, except the CMYK one being a little bit off).
I looked into color settings in my Acrobat and found a strange thing. The working color profile for RGB space is AdobeRGB (which is correct), but for CMYK it is "Monitor RGB - sRGB IEC.....) - and when I try to change this to ISO Coated V2, hit OK, close Acrobat and open the PDF file again, it is set back to "Monitor RGB - sRGB IEC...." for CMYK color space.
So now I am confused, why images in PDF file that has no embeded ICC profiles look different from what I see in Indesign - is it normal? Or is my Color settings wrong? What would be the proper settings then?
And my other question: When I place a grayscale image into Indesign, it looks a lot darker than it looked in Photoshop. But when I enable the Overprint preview, they look OK. Now my concern is, what is correct? I don't want the images to come out so dark from print, but I can't really brighten them up any more in Photoshop, because there they look all right.

I try to stay optimistic about Adobe color management, but it really is broken. This thread is just another example of the problem.
Monitor profiles aside, the issue is the destination CMYK matching the print condition. Here we need a conversion to ISO Coated v2 (ECI).
Or do we? If the original PDF is all CMYK, Adobe's default answer is "No Conversion Necessary". You could have US Web Coated SWOP v2 going in, it doesn't matter. If this gets placed in the new InDesign, then re-output PDF/X with ISO Coated v2 Output Intent, you essentially have a false output intent in the new PDF that does not correlate with the original file.
Then, when you soft proof the original and the new on-screen, there is an appearance shift. But don't worry, it's OK, the numbers are the same. Which begs the question – if the numbers are OK, which appearance is correct?
So let's switch gears. Start all over, and this time try to maintain color appearance. That means the US Web Coated SWOP numbers will change in the conversion to ISO Coated. Incoming is PDF/X-1a, with US Web Output Intent. This is placed in InDesign and imposed. Now re-output to PDF again, this time "Convert to Destination", NOT preserving numbers.
Open up the PDF. We still have the blasted appearance shift! InDesign doesn't recognize the Output Intent in the original. All of the CMYK color in the original is Device, so InDesign leaves all the number values alone.
Back to the original PDF, in Acrobat. Since InDesign can't do the conversion, it has to be done here. Is it easy? Depends on your definition of easy. True, the PDF has the Output Intent. The problem is PDF/X-1a is not a format that is meant to be refried. If the Acrobat working space is ISO Coated, it will treat the entire PDF as source CMYK ISO coated, because – don't forget – it's Device color. Device = Uncalibrated. Convert to ISO, no CMYK values will change.
That means you have to change Acrobat CMYK working space to US Web. Now convert to the new Output Intent – ISO Coated. Don't forget to enable Preserve Black. Finally! A conversion. Let's just hope any JPEGs in the PDF survive getting refried.
The PDF can now be placed and imposed in InDesign. Just remember to reset your Acrobat Color Settings now that you've fixed the broken PDF.
Confused yet? It gets a lot better than that. What if whoever produced the original PDF didn't bother with PDF/X, or including profiles. Then you have mystery meat.
Mystery = broken. You can't go anywhere because you don't know where to start. Sure, the Acrobat CMYK working is the assumed color space of CMYK content in the PDF. But is that really the correct CMYK?
    Probably not.

  • PDF printing -- area contents overflows area content in line

I have configured standard printing using fop.war in APEX 3.1. On occasion it produces a broken pdf file that cannot be opened with Adobe Reader 8. On the server, OC4J displays an INFO message: "area contents overflows area content in line". Sometimes a snippet of text follows the message. Is the INFO message related to producing a bad pdf? Are there limits on the size of pdf reports (width or length) that users need to know about?

Is this a known bug in FOP?If I wanted to know the answer to that I would start looking here:

    " Ask Dave Taylor " a Mac-PC A-Z tech site unofficial,
Fix blank PDF viewer in Mac Safari? from Ask Dave Taylor!®
    link=
    http://www.askdavetaylor.com/fix_blank_pdf_viewer_in_mac_safari.html
    Info below=
    Per Post there =
Every time I go to a PDF link in Safari on my iMac I just get a blank, gray screen. At first I thought that they were big PDF files that needed to download, but nope, it's just a blank screen without the document ever showing up. If I view it in a different browser, the document comes up just fine, and if I save it as a file to view with Viewer, it's fine. But I want to read PDF files in Safari itself. Is that no longer an option?
    Dave's Answer:
Modern web browsers like Safari use a lot of helper apps, separate programs that let them know what to do with unusual file types like an .mp4 movie or, in this case, a portable document format (PDF) file. Normally it works fine and most people end up using Adobe's PDF Viewer plug-in for their Web browsing, letting you easily click on and view PDFs to your heart's content.
Except sometimes when there's a glitch in how things are set up in Safari on a Mac OS X system.
For reasons that I really don't understand, what appears to be the case is that Mac OS X ships with a broken PDF plug-in, but even with the very latest system patch, the problem's still present. And here's
what you see... Instead of viewing the PDF document in question, it's just a gray screen::
    (Then displayed gray- screen )
To say that's frustrating is an understatement! When I first hit this problem, I just switched to a different Web browser entirely, which is rather a dramatic solution if you think about it.
    Instead, let's fix it.
To do that, use Spotlight to find a plugin called AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin. Simply click on the magnifying glass icon on the very top right of your screen and type in that plugin name:
Click on "Show All In Finder" (since there should only be one) and you'll see this:
Delete the plugin. No, really. You'll see, it'll work because Safari actually has a built-in PDF viewer capability that doesn't need the Adobe software available:
That's it. Now quit and restart Safari and go back to the very same PDF URL and
Why there's a broken plugin included with Mac OS X I cannot explain, but this'll fix things and you'll be good to go, no gray screen of non-viewing, just happy PDF files.
Great Web Site , I subscribed after that ! Hope this helps !
