Broken root domain without a valid backup. Any chance to get it back to work properly ?

Hi guys,
i came across the following issue:
Imagine a standard enterprise environment with a forest. The root domain is called contoso.com and there is a subdomain called company.contoso.com. There are also subdomains of company.contoso.com, but they are not important for the problem description.
The functional level of the forest is Windows 2003-interim & the domain level of the root domain is Windows 2003, as is the domain level of all subdomains. All Domain Controllers are Windows 2003 SP2.
There have been people in the environment with too many rights, that used to promote DCs and then also just decommission them without properly demoting them. This left several unreachable domain controllers in both the root domain & the subdomain.
I cleared all those DCs that are no longer available, which made company.contoso.com stable and reliable. All DCs within the subdomain are properly talking to each other and replicating fine.
Then i discovered the main issue here. The replication in the root domain is broken. The is only one domain controller left in the root domain, nevertheless the server is suffering from USN rollback. Digging deeper i found out that the domain controllers
have been virtualized years ago, but no one ever cared about the root domain. So i found out that replication stopped in 2006 when obv. the last healthy domain controller was removed from the root domain.
So i have basically a crippled root domain with a crippled domain controller. I am not able to set the forest level to 2003 native, as the domain controller says that the domain contoso.com is still Windows 2000. This is not correct, i have checked msDS-Behaviour-Version
and nTMixedDomain. They are properly set to 2 & 0.
My idea was to introduce a new installed 2003 server and promote it to a DC. Then get rid of the broken one. Unfortunately the broken DC is not replicating. Due to USN rollback the netlogon service goes constantly to paused state & of course both inbound
& outbound replication are disabled. Even when i reenable the replication it is just a matter of seconds before they get disabled again. I also tried to introduce a new 2012R2 DC, but that fails of course due to the forest level not beeing 2003.
So i am a little stuck here. Any thoughts about how to continue to troubleshoot ?
I have a final idea:
Install a new forest with the same name contoso.com and set up a trust with company.contoso.com.
The question would be, how can i convince company.contoso.com that the new installed forest and domain are its parent ?

> Install a new forest with the same name contoso.com and set up a trust

> The question would be, how can i convince company.contoso.com that the

You cannot. Sad, but true. If the forest root domain is dead, the forest
is dead. In addition, you have no Naming Master and no Schema Master
FSMOs. The only reliable solution is creating a new forest and new
subdomains, then migrating all objects...

And Photostream would only have the latest 1000 pictures taken. You photos are in the hand of whomever stole your devices.

  • How to restore a previous session after firefox closed and cleared browsing history, is still any chance to get it back there?

Accidentally shut down the pc and firefox did not come back with option restore previous session at the first screen even in History-Restory previous session is Grey. My settings are clean history after firefox is closed.
Is there any change to get back on my Tabs from previous session even the history browsing was cleaned? I would appreciate your help!

In general FireFox will behave in 1 of 3 ways when restarted after a shutdown.
    1. Kill Shutdown
This happens when the FireFox process is terminated with a TerminateProcess() call or if the FireFox process crashes. It is a dirty exit, no clean-up is done. When restarted after this FireFox will show a "Well this is embarrassing" dialog with options to restore selected parts of the previous session.
    2. Force Shutdown
This happens when another process asks FireFox to shutdown cleanly (such as a PC restart) by a call to ExitProcessEx() and does not ask the user for confirmation. Normally, when this type of shutdown occurs, Firefox will just restore all tabs and sessions without asking. However if Firefox is set to automatically delete history on shutdown, it can't. I suspect this is your situation. I would suggest to the FF team that deleting history should be skipped in this case, only a user shutdown should delete history.
    3. User shutdown.
This is when the user tells Firefox to close down (by selecting Exit or closing all tabs etc..). Confirmation is asked to close all tabs (if enabled and more than 1 tab is open). On restart, nothing is restored.
Unfortunately, if you have auto clear history enabled, there's no way to recover the previous session. Sorry.

  • Deleted my iphoto library, any chance of getting it back???? HELP!

I was fooling around making new icons for folders today, and somehow I made a copy of the "photos" folder on the HD. Of course the iphoto library in located there. Well, I thought I deleted the "extra" folder, and then went onward. Found out I deleted the "real" folder and I have no photos or iphoto library. Of course I emptied the trash (not secure empty though). Is there any chance I can recover my photos? Is there software out there that can recover them???
    Help......!

    Steve:
I doubt it if you can regain the library as it was but there's a chance you can salvage the photos that were deleted. They will not be titled like they once were and in no particular order. Download and run SubrosaSoft FileSalvage in it's demo mode. It will indicate to you how many image files it will be able to save once you've paid for it. If is seems worthwhile purchase it, and run the salvage program.
You will keep a backup of the library in the future I hope.

My computer got fried during a storm so I purchased a new PC.  When I downloaded my itunes library, none of the playlists I had created appeared.  Is there any chance on retrieving these from itunes?  I spent alot of time creating them for certain occassions.  Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Error 92h- ProtectTools- Any chance of getting data back?

After defragging, I get the dreaded "error 92h- EpePC has been corrupted." Using Protect Tools with Endpoint Encryption PC v6.1. Is there a way to un-encrypt the drive? If so, what tools are needed to do this. Luckily I have the USB key (stroke of luck finding that one...) Thanks for any insights. I know that there are a number of threads on this topic, but nothing that was clearly pointing a way to success.

You may need to provide some more details. iCloud does not expire. You may have had a complimentary storage upgrade that expired but your Apple ID and the free base storage would still be valid. I have also seen reports of an "iCloud session" expiration. More details from you may help me or someone else here give you a more helpful answer.

  • Any chance of getting a wpc600n pcmcia working?

i thought this card had a broadcom chipset, same as apple's wireless, and so might work...i know there's an atheros driver (http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/wirelessformac.html)

I've gone through 6 of them recently and given up. Here are the problems I encountered:
Monitor 1: Non-uniform brightness with right side much brighter than left side and top brighter than bottom. 1 bad pixel in the upper middle area.
Monitor 2: Brightness uniformity was good, no bad pixels, but flashing short lines and pixels on black background.
Monitor 3: Dim horizontal area starting about 2/3 from the top of the screen and going about 2/3 of the way across the screen. Looks like a very uneven backlight tube. The top backlight tube also seemed to be dim. I guess the problem could also be caused by the backlight control module. Three bad pixels.
Monitor 4: Same problem as monitor 3, only worse, and it also had a bad pixel in the middle of the screen as well as the flashing pixels/lines on black background problem.
Monitor 5: Two white vertical stripes on the right side of the screen. A real shame because otherwise it was good - no dead pixels and decent brightness uniformity. I had never seen a problem like this before - probably something wrong with the video processing electronics.
Monitor 6: Same problem as 3 and 4, but a little better. Still not acceptable.
All monitors were made in Jan. 2006 other than Monitor 2 which was made in Dec. 2005.
I ended up getting a refund - I just couldn't find a good one. I'm planning to wait until the recent manufacturing problems with this model are sorted out. I bought one of these a year ago, and it is very good other than some rare "dancing green pixels".
Things somehow got worse with these panels around the time Dell started shipping theirs. May or may not be a coincidence. Ramping up production for high volume can be tricky.

    Hello evanfromvic
If you have a back up in iTunes, you can restore from that back up. The article below will assist with getting that backup restored.

Sorry no as you wipe the current data when you restore from your backup.

If you did not backup your iPad, your photos are gone forever.

No. When you restored the backup of the old computer it wiped out everything on the phone.

Was the content not synced with a computer previously?  If it was, simply re-sync with that computer.
Syncing an iDevice to a new computer will do exactly what you describe above as this is not the way to move content to a new computer.
