Broken sidebar

on my mac mini g4 i booted it up today and my sidebar has gone haywire. All the icons and shortcuts are gone and dragging them back won't do anything. Under the finder preferences the icons on the top section has a dash beside them and the icons on the bottom section are not selected at all. can check the top icons i want but when i check the bottom icon for say my home folder it unchecks all the ones i just checked and doesn't check itself. if i just check the top ones i want like hard disks, network, connected servers, and removable media then close the window still nothing happens.
I have searched the forums and found only one solution and it was to delete these two files.
/Users/(NAME)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/(NAME)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
I have done that and it solved nothing.
repairing permisions was also recommended so i started from the recovery disck and repaired permisions and the disk and still no progress.
I can't think of or find anything else to do. My last resort is reinstalling and I really really don't want to do that.
Please some one help me with this problem it's driving me crazy.
Many many thanks in advanced if someone fixes my problem.
Thank you

If deleting the two plist files then logging out and back in didn't fix it, you might try going to System Preferences/Accounts and create a new admin account, then log in to the new account. See if the sidebar behaves correctly in the new account. If it is also broken there you will probably be best served by an archive and install of the system. However, if the sidebar DOES behave correctly in the new account then the problem is some file or program running in the original account and an archive and install probably wouldn't fix it. You'll need to figure out what file or program is causing the problem.
You could also try re-booting in Safe Mode: when you hear the startup chime hold down the Shift key. Startup will take longer, and you'll see a message on the splash screen saying "Safe Mode"--starting this way repairs the disk, empties some caches and disables all third party extensions (and a couple of Apple ones as well). See if the sidebar now works.

  • Cannot remove a broken sidebar network folder alias in Finder window

    Mac OS 10.6.7 -- WinXP Home
    I have a created netowork folder alias in the sidebar of my Finder window that points to a shared folder on an officemate's PC (WinXP Home). This folder has been deleted on the officemate's computer. Now, in my Finder window, I cannot click on the alias. Clicking on the broken network sidebar folder aliases or dragging them off of the side bar (they used to vanish in a puff of smoke but now they don't) does nothing.
    I can right/control-click is but the only option in the sub-menu is "Open Sidebar Preferences..." and nothing else (other aliases have all the options including "Remove from sidebar"). I can't even drag the folder aliases off of the sidebar in a puff of smoke either. I'm at a loss on this one.
    Any ideas how to remove these broken sidebar aliases? Even opening the sidebar preference panel yielded nothing I could see that would help.

    If you have installed Developer Tools on your Mac (Optional Installs on your MacOS X installer DVD) then you can delete individual aliases in the Finder sidebar, using Property List Editor, which you'll find in Developer > Applications > Utilities.
    In your Home folder go to User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    Control-right click and choose Open With > Property List Editor.
    Scroll down to "useritems" and click the grey arrow next to it to reveal contents.
    Click the arrow next to CustomListItems and you'll see a list of entries marked "Item" with a numeric suffix.
    Click the grey arrow next to the Item whose number corresponds to the sidebar alias that you want to get rid of and you'll see the info associated with that entry, including its name, as seen in the sidebar.
    If it's the right one, click again on the Item header (i.e. "Item [x]") and hit delete.
    Quit Property List Editor and Save changes.
    Quit and relaunch Finder and that item will be gone from the sidebar list. Everything else will still be there, and you won't need to rebuild the list.

  • Broken Sidebar Link Navigation

    I have created links in a sidebar to other pages within the site, but they do not work. I have made sure that the file names are spelled correctly in the link properties and have tried several different methods of creating the links (type file in properties bar, browse for file, etc.) but they are still broken. When on the site (in browser), if I right-click and "open the links in a new tab/window", they will work, but not if you just click right on it.
    Can you please suggest another way to fix/re-do these links so they connect correctly? Perhaps there is something "behind-the-scenes" that I am missing.
    Thanks!

    I agree that there is definately some weirdness going on and I am determined to sort it out! I tried your suggestion of changing the sidebar into a list, but unfortunately it didn't make much of a difference.
    Here is the code:
    <!-- Begin Side Bar Area -->
       <div id="sidebar1Basic3col">
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="sidebar" -->
    <ul>
       <li><a href="services.html">Enterprise</a></li>
       <li><a href="services_advtech.html">Advanced Technology</a></li>
       <li><a href="services_invest.html"> Investment</a></li>
       <li><a href="services_poladvo.html"> Policy and Advocacy</a></li>
    </ul>
    <!-- InstanceEndEditable -->  </div>
    <!-- End Side Bar -->
    I don't know code very well yet, as I'm still pretty new to web design, but it seems to make sense here and looks like it should all work out (even though it doesn't). Could the problem perhaps be something with the properties of the page(s)? I created these pages off the templates established by the person who originally created the site (I've just been adding and editing), but maybe there's something there?

  • How do I remove a broken alias in my Finder Sidebar without Apple Developer Tools loaded?

    OS 10.7.5
    I have a broken/dead alias in my Finder Sidebar.  It will not activate when the cursor is on it therefore I can't move or remove it from the Finder Sidebar.  I found a previous solution that requires loading the Apple Developer Tools in order to acces and edit the list of alias.  Is there any other method that can be used to remove a broken/dead alias available?
    Thanks.
    Charlie

    Never mind!!  Even though the alias would not highlight to show that it was active, I simply Command > drag and it disappeared.

  • Sidebar is broken, missing dividing labels

    I upgraded to Mavericks recently, and I've been adjusting and learning.
    It seems when it added my already existing mail folders that are usually under a Label called "On My Mac" I lost my "On My Mac" label and my "iCloud" label.  I no longer have any labels on the Sidebar, just the one that says Mailboxes.  I still have all my mailboxes and folders that I created, just no labels -- as the the image shows/arrows.
    If I go up to View, and Show the Favorites Bar (which I don't want/use), There is the tab for "On My Mac" that shows all my mailboxes that I have added to "On My Mac" in the past.
    I can't find a way or setting to get this Labels that divid up the sidebar back!  Nothing in the Menu under View, nothing in preferences, and the little gear at the bottom does not show a setting!
    How can I get it back??

  • Finder sidebar broken after 10.5.6 upgrade

    Hallo everyone
    After upgrading my MacPro using the full combo update, I have the following problem with the Finder:
    If you collapse all disclosure triangles on the sidebar and expnad them again, the display of all icons and labels is completly messed up.
    Labels are overlapping and clicking does break the highlighted rows.
    Can somebody confirm they have the same issue?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Patrick,
    You may want to refresh the Sidebar plist file by dragging the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file which is located in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and confirm your settings in Finder>Preferences...>Sidebar

  • Firefox updated last night to 11.0, and now whatever website I'm on, the writing appears as gibberish or all broken up until I mouse over it. This happens on tabs, the facebook sidebar tickers, search fields, you name it. Very strange...

    Things appear fine as I type them, but after a while, I will look up at a tab or search field, and the writing appears strangely. If I mouse over the gibberish text, it will return to normal.

    Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there. <br />

    /* ~~ These are the columns for the layout. ~~
    1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the block elements. The elements within these blocks have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the block itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the block element and place a second block element within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.
    2) No margin has been given to the columns since they are all floated. If you must add margin, avoid placing it on the side you're floating toward (for example: a right margin on a block set to float right). Many times, padding can be used instead. For blocks where this rule must be broken, you should add a "display:inline" declaration to the block element's rule to tame a bug where some versions of Internet Explorer double the margin.
    3) Since classes can be used multiple times in a document (and an element can also have multiple classes applied), the columns have been assigned class names instead of IDs. For example, two sidebar blocks could be stacked if necessary. These can very easily be changed to IDs if that's your preference, as long as you'll only be using them once per document.
    4) If you prefer your nav on the left instead of the right, simply float these columns the opposite direction (all left instead of all right) and they'll render in reverse order. There's no need to move the blocks around in the HTML source.

    Add this to the end of your nav p CSS selector at Line 209 of your HTML file, after 'background-repeat...':
    margin-bottom: -2px;
    Your nav p will then look like this:
    nav p {
              font-size: 90%;
              font-weight: bold;
              color: #FFC;
              background-color: #090;
              text-align: right;
              padding-top: 5px;
              padding-right: 20px;
              padding-bottom: 5px;
              border-bottom-width: 2px;
              border-bottom-style: solid;
              border-bottom-color: #060;
              background-image: url(images/background.png);
              background-repeat: repeat-x;
              margin-bottom: -2px;

  • Sidebar moving over right border of website and outside of main container

    Hi
    I'm doing a website and have a question.
    I have a left nav bar, a fluid center column and an absolute positioned right sidebar.
    The sidebar is set to clear left and float right.
    However the sidebar moves over to the right and extends past the right border on some browsers.
    It moves out of the main container and I would like it to remain within it.
    Does anyone know how I can fix it so that the sidebar stays within the white area and does not move to the right?
    Thanks for your help!!!!
    Here is a screen shot
    When the browser window gets a little smaller the sidebar goes back to where I want it.
    Here is a link to my test page online:

    /* ~~ These are the columns for the layout. ~~
    1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the divs. The elements within these divs have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.
    2) No margin has been given to the columns since they are all floated. If you must add margin, avoid placing it on the side you're floating toward (for example: a right margin on a div set to float right). Many times, padding can be used instead. For divs where this rule must be broken, you should add a "display:inline" declaration to the div's rule to tame a bug where some versions of Internet Explorer double the margin.
    3) Since classes can be used multiple times in a document (and an element can also have multiple classes applied), the columns have been assigned class names instead of IDs. For example, two sidebar divs could be stacked if necessary. These can very easily be changed to IDs if that's your preference, as long as you'll only be using them once per document.
    4) If you prefer your nav on the right instead of the left, simply float these columns the opposite direction (all right instead of all left) and they'll render in reverse order. There's no need to move the divs around in the HTML source.

    Absolute positioning will always cause you problems so it's best to avoid unless absolutely necessary.
    Having said that, your layout issues were a straight-forward fix. Modify your style sheet with the below sections and and it should be ok. You might need to modify your CSS for smaller screens as once you reduce the browser window to about 500px, the right sidebar disappears. Something to be aware of.

    EDIT:// I meant to say, you should probably spend some time tidying up your CSS as they are not in any obvious order and can get confusing with multiple styles for the same element. Having a clean and easy to understand CSS sheet makes it easier for you to figure out what is wrong. Will help you enormously in the long run.

  • Sidebar height help needed

    Hi,
    I am using Dreamweaver CS5 for the first time and hope I'm on the right track with rebuilding my site.  This page is a work in progress (but getting close).  I used a built in template (2 column, header, footer) and changed it a bit.
    I am wanting to extend the sidebar height so it will meet up with the footer.  There is a space at the bottom showing the background color (white) of the center section.  I'd like the sidebar background color (gray) to continue down to the footer.  I've messed around with padding and margins but nothing fixed this.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    AND... does it look like I'm on the right track with everything else?  (obviously, I haven't linked any of the accordion items yet)
    Thank you
    Connie

    1) Padding is only placed on the top and/or bottom of the divs. The elements within these divs have padding on their sides. This saves you from any "box model math". Keep in mind, if you add any side padding or border to the div itself, it will be added to the width you define to create the *total* width. You may also choose to remove the padding on the element in the div and place a second div within it with no width and the padding necessary for your design.

    Thank you - I am determined to get this right.
    As for navigation, what would you recommend for a catalog with numerous subitems?    I had built a Spry Menu for my catalog template pages (same basic items but in a horizontal menu)  But as you mentioned, that is not a good idea.  My current site http://brassworks4.com was done in GoLIve and I was able to build my menus in MenuMachine, both vertical on the home page and horizontal on the catalog pages.  Now I'm not sure what to do.
    I am planning on putting all my data in tables within the same page as a Spry Data Set (so non-javascript people can view the tables)  Is that a good idea?
    I'm at a loss now for the menus/navigation items.
    I appreciate your input.

  • How can I get the sidebar back in iTunes 12?

    The Sidebar is the MAIN part of iTunes I have used for several years.  Unfortunately, I made the mistake of updating iTunes to 12, and the Sidebar is completely gone.  As far as I can see there is no way to get it back.
    Does anyone know a way to restore the Sidebar?  If not, is there a way to revert my iTunes back to version 11?
    At this point, I will only be using my iTunes to back up my iPhone, that's it.  Until I get an iTunes that is more user friendly....one with a Sidebar....I will not be using iTunes for any other reason.  (Yes, I'll be boycotting the store....no purchases of any kind from iTunes from now on.)
    Zane

    But it's not exactly the same. You can only look at one thing at a time. You no longer have the heading that says "Library" and then the music, movies, etc., listings under it. I am now migrating computers and this has made it a royal PITA. Before, I could have all the listings, including my shared library, and I could just drag-and-drop from my shared library to the new one. Not anymore. Now I have to go in and import. Which, like many other people, takes a long time because of the size of our music collections. My rock category alone looks like it's going to take several days. I don't have a flash drive large enough to just copy to that and then move that way.
    So thank you so very much Apple for once again fixing something that wasn't broken.

  • Mavericks 10.9.2 Junk Filtering radically broken

    Mail under Mavericks (latest update as applied by App Store, verified multiple times that I have latest version of the OS, 10.9.2) has radically broken mail app junk filtering.
    If I do the following I will have at least 90% of the messages sent end up marked as junk on my primary system, the last 17" MacBook Pro series made, however, even my less than one year old MacBook Air will exhibit similar behavior, just not at the extreme frequency of mail junk filtering failures as on the main MacBook Pro:
    Create new email message addressed to myself
    I should add that I have BCC myself set on all of my mail accounts
    Add photos and Hit send (I use this process as a simple way to gather images from a number of folders on various backup drives and send the selected set of images in one group that I can then easily export to iPhoto (or Aperture)
    Message sends
    Message never appears in my inbox, neither the TO: nor BCC: appear
    Check sent folder and find that the message is IN the Sent folder, with brown header indicating that I Marked the message as JUNK, I did NOT do so
    I have reset all rules, no change, disabled junk no change (yes with Junk DISABLED the above will happen), I have used the advance option and edited the rules to try and simplify the settings to the bare amount, all with no discernable changes. I have even added rules that explicitly state DO NOT consider as junk any messages containing my domain name for example, still no change.
    Even though I have marked LEAVE JUNK MAIL IN INBOX it is inconsistent, mail I send to myself the majority of times will be in the sent folder, other email that mail app marks as junk MAY be in my inbox, but not consistently.
    Even email I have marked multiple times as Not Junk continues to be marked as Junk (for example NO email sent from my work domain to my work domain email should ever be marked as junk, yet it is, but always inconsistently, that is out of  200 hundred plus emails a day, a handful will be marked as junk, in some cases the exact same sender will be marked as junk on successive days with me marking each message as Not Junk, then for a period all email will be delivered as intended, only to have stuff from the previous email sender start appearing as marked as junk again).
    When I have ENABLED Junk filtering I have verified that all check boxes are as have been suggested in other threads here
    Again, even DISABLING Junk filtering still results in the inconsistent delivery of my own emails to myself
    As an experiment, if I send the message from my gmail account USING mail app to compose and send the message (NOT using the web interface to gmail, but the mail app native gmail account setup) sending the message to my personal domain email address it appears the problem never exhibits. The BCC shows up in my gmail account inbox, and TO: message appears in my primary personal domain account inbox. I have tried this at least four or five times and so far it has never failed to deliver the message, and never has marked as junk. However, based on the inconsistent behavior of junk filtering with my work domain email I would not be willing to bet that using gmail to send to my personal domain account would not have some junk filter mistakes as well.
    This has gotten bad enough that I would gladly go to another mail client, but any alternative client needs to support at minimum the following:
    Must support FULL iPhoto (or Aperture) integration, this means not only ability to send email from iPhoto, but ability to EXPORT images from a mail message into iPhoto, as well as select Photos from media in finder sidebar and have iPhoto browser open to SEND images via email  as alternative to sending from iPhoto directly
    Must support Exchange (used for my work domain email)
    Images in attached message should allow mass saving to file system folders as well if desired, in addition to exporting to iPhoto
    I Have tried several alternative email apps for OS X. Postbox seems to be the only one that claims any iPhoto integration at all, and it is marginal at best, and does not seem to support exporting images directly into iPhoto regardless. Postbox also had some other weirdness, some options from mail seem to be just missing (for example if BCC myself on all messages exists I have not found the setting), loading messages with any attachments was much slower than mail, etc. But if there was a way to get Postbox to work better with iPhoto I would be willing to give it a try.
    I have even wondered if maill app and/or preferences are corrupted. I have a ton of email that would be painful to lose (I do use Mail Steward to back up email from previous years, but it would be a fair amount of work to completely back up all of my accounts and delete everything and restart using Mail Steward, but that might be my only option). Even if I did totally kill all my preferences and deleted the entire mail section in /Library it is not clear if there is any way to reinstall just mail. Or do I download the entire OS X Mavericks installer, run that and hope it reinstalls mail app and start all over? I am willing to even try that, if I had a reasonable expectation that it would actually correct anything. But I suspect based on what I have seen here and on the web that this is a fundementatl break in the mail app code.
    As an alternative, is there a terminal command I can try to use to totally eradicate and shutoff mail app junk filtering since the control in preferences to disable junk filtering is not working, at least on my system?
    Any ideas appreciated.
    Thanks

    I did some additional testing last night. Setting Junk to DISABLED, closing mail and re-launching mail, and then sending myself a message from the same account STILL ends up with the message marked as JUNK (in fact it indicates I marked it for junk, which clearly I did NOT so mark my own message sent to me as junk) with the message marked as junk sitting in the sent folder. Setting junk filtering back to ENABLED, exiting mail and re-launching again, still no change. I again RESET all junk rules and learned behavior, tried sending myself a message again, and still had the same failure. I have verified the various settings that have been proposed in other threads in this forum, no joy, same behavior. It simply appears that email sent from your own account to yourself is frequently (if not 100% in recent testimng) tagged as being junk, and that simply is nuts.
    Mail is fundamentally, radically broken since one of the latest Mavericks releases. (I think this actually started in 10.9.1, but I know for certain it is 10.9.2).
    I fail to see how ANY setting of rules, et al, can be at issue here. When junk filtering is DISABLED nothing should ever be filtered as junk, period. In reality mail is still being impacted by the junk mail filtering, regardless of any setting, including totally disabling junk mail filtering in mail preferences.
    Add in that in the latest versions of mail (again for at least the last two major 10.9 updates, if not longer) deleting messages is inconsistent. I have had messages I have deleted reappear in one of my folders multiple times. The most common are messages popping back up in the DRAFTS folder, where I have a copy of the message in my sent folder, and the recipient of the message acknowledges receipt of the message. Clearly the message is NOT still a draft. I manually delete these spurious messages and in some cases the same messages reappear back into mail in the drafts folder again!
    I love Apple products, and support the company and their technology, but mail has some significant issues, and regrettably there does not appear to be any viable alternative that really integrates with the rest of the OS X environment as well, leaving us with either a badly broken mail client, or significant downgrade in functionality moving to a different client.

  • DVD Drive Broken -Can I install from another Mac?

    Hello All
    A friend has a MacMini with a broken DVD Drive. He also has a MacBook, which has a working drive. He is still using Leopard and wants to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Can he upgrade the MacBook, then upgrade the MacMini using the MacBook? If so, would anyone happen to have detailed instructions?
    Thank you for your time
    Cooch

    You connect the two via Firewire cable. Boot the Mini into TDM. Put the installer DVD into the optical drive on the MB then boot the MB. After the chime hold down the "C" key to boot from the installer DVD. Select the language and click on the Continue button. When the menubar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select the Mini's drive from the left sidebar, click on the First Aid tab in DU's main window, then click on the Repair Disk button. After Repair Disk is completed click on the Repair Permissions button. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the installation. When you reach the point for selecting a target drive select the Mini's drive. Continue on. The Snow Leopard installer will automatically upgrade the existing Leopard system.

  • Don't see photos from icloud.  Replaced broken 4s w/new phone.  Help! How do I get photos back? They don't show up on icloud online but phone says broken phone was backed up yesterday under manage storage.  How do I use this backup?

    Please help.  Replaced broken phone w/new 4s.  I did as the genius bar guy said and did reset>erase all content and settings at home because he said it would take too long in the store.  Last time I had to replace my phone, all the photos and video were there.  Now they're not.  I had set up icloud but when i typed in "my restore from icloud", nothing came up.  I NEED those pictures and videos.  They're the last photos and videos I have of my mother who passed away recently.  Please I need them back.  I feel like I've lost her all over again.  Please someone help.  I went to icloud>storage & backup>manage storage and i see that those pictures were backed up yesterday yet I don't see any pictures or picture icon in icloud.com.  Please someone help me get those pictures back.  They're priceless and they're the last I have left of my mother.

    If this is your first sync and there is already data on the phone, perform the steps listed below.  This will transfer your apps and other media purchased from the iTunes store to your iTunes library, perform a manual backup and restore, then sync the iTunes media back to the phone from your iTunes library.  This will not transfer media from other sources such as music from your ripped CDs.  As you said you never synced before, I assume all of your apps, music and other media was purchased from the iTuens and App stores.  If this is correct, you won't lose anything.
    Download and install iTunes: http://www.apple.com/itunes/.
    Launch iTunes, go to the View menu and click to check Show Sidebar.
    Go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices (Edit>Preferences>Devices if using Windows) and check "Prevent...from syncing automatically".
    Go to Store>Authorize This Computer and authorize all Apple IDs used to purchase apps and other iTunes media (music, podcasts, movies, tv shows, etc.) on your phone.
    On her phone, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup and turn iCloud Backup to Off.
    Connect her phone to your computer and in iTunes go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases to transfer your purchased media to your iTunes library.
    Right-click on the name of the phone on the left side of iTunes and click "Reset Warnings".
    Right-click on the name of the phone again and click "Back Up" to back up the phone.
    Right-click again and choose "Restore from Backup...", select the backup you just made to restore from and restore the backup to your phone.  If prompted to back up again, decline.
    Go to the Info tab and make sure nothing is checked so you aren't syncing calendars, contacts, etc. with iTunes.
    Go to the Summary tab and select This Computer under Automatically Back Up.
    Check the other tabs to confirm that your sync settings are the way you want them.
    Click Apply at the bottom to sync your phone.
