Broken 'silence' switch: workaround to make phone ring again?

I dropped my phone a short distance. there is nothing else wrong besides the 'silence' switch being damaged. It is now permanently in 'silent' mode. Took it to the store, they fiddled with it, but said I'd have to spend $250 to replace. Does anyone know of a software workaround, firmware reset, etc. that will simply turn it back to 'ringing' mode.
Vibrate works, but I'm missing calls regularly now, and don't want to replace the phone.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

There is no way to activate or deactivate the silence mode in the OS. It is controlled solely by the switch.
Unfortunately, you are going to have to pony up the repair fee if you want the phone to make sounds again.

How do you set your phone to ring but all other notifications ie texts &emails vibrate?
This question is for iPhone 4 & 4s

As i mentioned up top, you can do this with a silent ringtone. I have read some app's have muted ringtones(don't know of the app name though) OR, GarageBand can make ringtones on Mac. (that is where i think you would need further explaining on, if you have Mac).
The silent tone will be set as text's tone (as the same if it made noise), it will vibrate two times quick...While asleep, awake, on a phone call, still texting, at almost any time i can think of, (other than powered OFF.)
I have recommended this method, for people asking as a regular ringtone, for telemarketer's, unknown callers, and other sort of people. And YES, you will need the Vibrate turned on.
    Hope this helped.

Unauthorized modification of iOS can cause security vulnerabilities, instability, shortened battery life, and other issues
Security vulnerabilities: Jailbreaking your device eliminates security layers designed to protect your personal information and your iOS device. With this security removed from your iOS device, hackers may steal your personal information, damage your device, attack your network, or introduce malware, spyware or viruses.
Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized modifications have caused damage to iOS that is not repairable. This can result in the hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iOS update is installed.
... It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of iOS is a violation of the iOS end-user software license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.

Have you done a restore of the phone to see if that fixed the problem with the speaker? If that doesnt help then you probably damaged something inside the phone when you dropped it.

  • Since upgrading to iOS 6, none of the sounds are working. I checked to make sure the volume is turned up and that sound is on. But nothing, except the phone ring works when I get a call n

Since upgrading to iOS 6, sound is not working on my iPhone 4S. The phone ring works but nothing else, including Siri.

My wife's phone had similar symptoms, at least with the text notification alert not working.  I have narrowed it down to happening after we use the new navigation feature in the Maps.  When we power the phone off and back on, the alert sound seems to return.  I haven't tried just "killing" the Maps app after we use it...perhaps that would work as well.

  • Why doesn't my phone ring when I've got screen lock activated?

This has been driving me crazy and I need to know how to fix it.
I like to have the screen lock activated on my phone (otherwise it will be in my purse calling people without me even touching it) but when I get an incoming call my phone doesn't ring, it will only vibrate so I'm missing alot of calls because I'm not always near my phone to hear it vibrate.
Also, there's nothing to alert me (a sound played every few minutes) when I missed a call or text & its causing problems for me.

        cem421,
Thank you for reaching out to us. I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the phone ringing but we certainly want to make sure that is addressed. When your phone is not in screen lock does it ring as normal? You may want to check your sound settings to see if you have it set to vibrate in silent. Also if that mode is set you want to make sure the switch above your volume buttons is set up, otherwise the phone will not ring while in screen lock mode. Keep us updated and I am sure we will get this figured out.
    Thank you,

  • Before ISO 8.02 I had not issues using a motorola H730, now the phone rings I open the boom it says it connectes but to manualy pick H730

when phone rings open boom of motorola H730 now have to manualy switch form iphone to h730, head set says it connects but aduio does not adumaticly switch to head set.

Just spent 1/2 hour with a technician at Apple on this. It's a bug that may get fixed. In the meantime as a workaround go to settings/general/accessibility/call audio routing and select the headset instead of automatic. This seems to work.

  • Adding a message right before agent phone rings.

    Hello,
I'm on UCCX 8.5 and my supervisor would like to add a statement to the call so callers no they are getting ready to be answered by an agent.  She thinks this will help with abandons.  She wants to add": (Your call is now being transferred to an agent or may ringing) at least they now there call is getting ready to be answered.
    Thank you for your help.

The basic idea is that you separate the selection of the resource from the connection to the resource, which are both normally done in the same step, by default.
To achieve what you want, it takes two additional variables, and two additional steps, and the modification of one existing step.
    Variables
    Prompt youre_being_connected = P[youre_being_connected.wav]User selected_resource = null
    Script
.../* Here you will need to set the Connect property to "No" and the Resource Selected property to "selected_resource" */Select Resource (--Triggering Contact-- from "CustomerServiceCSQ")  Selected    Play Prompt (--Triggering Contact--, youre_being_connected)    Connect (--Triggering Contact-- to selected_resource)      Connected        End      Failed        ...  Queued    ...
    Hope that helps.
EDIT:  I need to add more to this, because there are somethings to note with the behavior of such a solution.
Something I was taught growing up in UCCX was to fake a ringback tone to the caller during the transfer to the Agent.  You do this by changing the Network Music On Hold source on your CTI Port Group to that of one on CUCM which contains a wav file of ringback sounds.
The thing to watch out for, in either the original request, or this fake ringback one, is Ring No Answer.  If the caller is immediately directed to an Agent then this is the experience, assuming you have the default sample MOH and a queue message:
Caller hits the Select Resource Step and an Agent is selected
Caller hits the Play Prompt Step and hears "Your call is being connected.."
Caller hits the Connect Step and hears Network MOH while the Agent phone rings
    Agent Ring No Answers
Caller hits the Select Resource Step and a different Agent is selected
Caller hits the Play Prompt Step and hears "Your call is being connected.."
Caller hits the Connect Step and hears Network MOH while the Agent phone rings
    Agent Ring No Answers
There's no more Ready Agents in the CSQ, so the Queued branch is hit
Caller hits the first queue message and hears "All of our Agents are current busy..."
Now the caller knows that the system tried two Agents, who didn;t help them, and is now stuck in queue.  I would not like that, personally.  I would think, "Jeez what just happened there?  It like tried to connect my two times and failed."  I may even hang up because I think it's broken and cannot connect me.
I think a much better experience is if the solution hides the attempted transfers from the caller and was as follows:
Caller hits the Select Resource Step and an Agent is selected
There's no Play Prompt to notify the caller of the pending transfer, so they hear nothing for the moment
Caller hits the Connect Step and hears Network Music On Hold, so they get the impression that they're in queue
    Agent Ring No Answers
Caller is taken off Network Hold and Music stops (but read on to see what the caller experience is like)
Caller hits the Select Resource Step and a different Agent is selected
There's still no Play Prompt to notify the caller of the pending transfer
Caller hits the Connect Step and hears Network Music On Hold, but since these steps are executing in sub second fashion, the off hold to on hold happens so quickly, there's literally no break in the music.  Therefore, they get the impression that they've been in queue the whole time
    Agent Ring No Answers
There's no more Ready Agents in the CSQ, so the Queued branch is hit
Caller hits the first queue message and hears "All of our Agents are currently busy..."
Now the caller thinks this is just a loop break, and is none the wiser that two Agents were attempted and failed to connect.  Basically, they've just been waiting for the first one.  If you make your queue messages (Play Prompt Steps) Uninterruptible, then you also ensure that they are not cutoff mid sentence, thus furthering this masking of the Ring No Answer failure scenarios.
I hope that's helpful, even though it's counter to what you requested.
