Broken USB Ports

Hey everyone,
I would love some advice regarding my broken USB ports. About 6 months ago I dropped my laptop down the stairs and completely bent the area where my ports are located. Luckily I was able to somehow bend them back and get a little connection back, but gradually the connection grew weaker and weaker and died. Is there anyway I can replace just the ports? Or even better, plug in my iphone to another port rather than the USB ports?? Desperate for help. Thanks so much!

the usb is physically soldered to the motherboard, and the warranty repair depot would change the motherboard when you have broken USB that needs repair (since the depot doesn't have the equipment to desolder/resolder a new usb port, these are taken care by some other contracting companies).
This problem does occur frequently in early model T400/T500/R400/R500/W500 machines, i guess you fall into that category.
Fixing it would require either you find a compatible usb ports, and some well honed soldering skills. If you can get these replacement usb ports and you know how to solder them, then it doesn't cost very much to fix.
Alternatively, just use a pcmcia/expresscard usb hub (should be around 20 to 40 AUD on ebay), which will give you several usb without the need to change the motherboard.

Can broken USB ports be fixed?

    Hi Bendmitchell
Yes they can be fixed at any apple store although it may take a couple of hours. If this can't be fixed you may have to buy a new Macbook.
    Hope this helped,

  • Broken USB port - how to save Address Book

I have a BlackBerry 8820 - use it daily - got it Sept 2007.  Well I have not backed-up my Address Book and I have 223 names there. Now my USB port (recharger port) is broken and I really would like to back-up the addresses.  It's a company BB with an enterprise contract I believe-- but I don't think that automatically backs-up individual address books ???
Is there a way to back up via Bluetooth?  I guess if the USB/recharger port was repaired then I'd be OK - the address book is in memory somewhere-- but it seems after 2.5 years and with other things (like the trackball) failing - they will simply replace this BlackBerry
Can I move the address book to the media card?  Then I can move it back if I get a new BB.
    Thanks for any comments here.
    Steve

If you're device is on a BES then it should sync your address book wirelessly if you're using Outlook. If you're using  Notes then it may not sync wirelessly. You can check on the device is the Address Book is setup to sync wirelessly by going into the Address Book, hitting the menu button, then choosing Options. See what your wireless synchronization line is set to. If it's turned on then all your names/addresses should be in your email client.

  • CAN I HAVE A BROKEN USB PORT REPAIRED BY ACER?

Greetings I own an Acer Aspire E1-571-6471.  Yesterday for some reason the USB ports on my right side (2) failed and the usb port on my left side failed.  I have ruled out all the options, and it is mechanical failure.  The ports themselves do not look damaged but I am getting no power or data feed on any of them.  My laptop still functions fine.  The hard drive etc.
How much would it cost to have this repaired? I would need to have the ports replaced on either side.  I am not sure how this happened.  My laptop has seen light useage since I purchased it and it has rarely seen internet use either. Assuming the ports aren't physically broken - how much would it cost to fix this problem?   How come the ports on both sides failed? I placed a usb stick in gently.  I honestly treat my computers well.  I use this PC for leisure use.  How much am I looking at to have it repaired? I got a great deal on this laptop and I don't want to buy another one.
Thanks in advance for all of your help.

I tried everything last night.  It has to be a physical & internal issue.  I don't understand.  How could this happen? This laptop has not been abused at all. It's been used lightly and never on the internet.  My Acer Iconia Tablet lasted only 7 months before the screen flickered and died.  They couldn't repair it properly - they just kept saying they repaired it and sent it back.
What is going on with Acer products? I am hesitant to even send it into them to have it repaired. I found a site that sells the parts that I may need.  It looks like the ports are integrated into the mobo.

  • HT1151 replace broken usb port

My USB port broke when i put in a new PNY 8 GB drive into the Macbook Air's right USB drive. I looked and saw a broken connector inside (1 of 4). How can I purchased and replace this USB port. Maybe a 3.0 USB?
    Thanks for any help.
    Sincerely,
    Pete

"If I am correct, the port is an integral part of the logic board."
Maybe not.  Check http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Air.  The OP should select his/her MBA model and look for the Port Hatch Assembly or I/O Board.

  • Anyway to bypass a broken USB port? I got an error saying that my USB device was drawing too much power and had to shut off.

I have a macbook pro. I just upgraded to Mavericks last night hoping this would fix the problem, but it hasn't. I received this error message and now none of my USB ports are working. I researched some and people have told me to reset the nvram, yet it is still not working. I have seen Thunderport docks that include USB ports on them, but they cost around $200. Just seeing if there is some sort of adapter or clever way to get around this problem? I mainly use my USB port for a Wacom Tablet. I was thinking about replacing the logic board, but that would be my last option. also, when i plug my phone into one of the USB ports, it shows that it is charging my phone, but it doesnt show up on my computer.
    thank you!

You may see if you can get a rise out of it by use of another reset...

Generally when combined total of items plugged into USB bus, where
ports are powered from one internal source, is too high, you'd get &
use a USB powered hub. This has a power adapter, so the USB bus
in computer does not need to try & support more load than it can.
Avoid charging an iPhone, iPad, etc from the computer, those little
USB chargers are better. And the Wacom tablet may be OK when
the computer is running on the power adapter.
The computer may not need a new logic board, but an adequate diagnosis
should be done before any major efforts are made into a big takeapart.
If you are in the USA or Canada, an Apple Store with Genius bar could
help determine the issues in the portable computer, if you check ahead &
set an appointment to discuss and diagnose this issue. This should be free
however the repair of any issue is another matter, and would cost. You can
take the unit anywhere qualified certified authorized trained Apple specialists
hang out, for further testing and repair. Or trust a reputable repair company
at a distance, and mail the computer away, after contacting them for details
on how they prefer to set up the repair, and how they want it shipped.
If you do get it repaired for one thing, while it is open consider items such as
a new larger capacity hard disk drive, etc. Otherwise a little while later, it may
be due for one, as they will fail. Even the fancy SSDs can fail quick enough.
Hopefully you can get USB to work good enough to further troubleshoot.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Is it possible to perform a backup with a broken USB port? (Q10)

Hi there! The USB port of my Q10 does not work. (I bought it like this, knowing of the defect.) I thought it's a hardware/contact problem, but it's not: I disassembled the Q10 and tested if the contacts of the USB port are connected correctly to the PCB by measuring. (Yes, I'm an electrical engineer.) The device does not charge and it's impossible to establish a USB connection to a computer. It's also not a software issue: I factory reset the phone two times before using it. I want to buy a new Q10 and transfer all data from the old to the new phone. I thought of doing a full backup with Blackberry Link. For Blackberry Link to work I need either a USB connection or a Wifi connection. The latter only works when the Q10 is connected to a charger. You see the problem?  So my questions are:- Is it possible to transfer all of the data from one phone to another without using USB? Wifi, Bluetooth, whatever?- Is it possible to do a full backup of the phone without Blackberry link?- If not, are there any apps that I can use that backup most part of my data? BTW: Blackberry blend works, but there I can't backup local calendar and other data this way, only photos and videos. Thanks for your help!

    Hello,
Via Media Card, one option is a 3rd party backup app called Ultimate Backup.
For the native LINK method, my memory tells me that BT integration was not included, so that won't work. I don't know if any 3rd party tools can work that way or not.
    Good luck!

  • Weak/broken USB ports?

I'm guessing that my two USB ports are somehow weak, if that's even possible. I have two devices when plug in act weirdly and, well, weaker. When I plug in my flashdrive/thumbdrive (whathaveyou) it takes a good 10-15 minutes to show up on my computer. When it's plugged into other computers it shows up right away. When my tablet is plugged in it doesn't function properly but it does just barely work. And when I look for my tablet in my computer's system preferences, it says: "A USB tablet was not found when the system started. Please shut down your computer, check your connections, and restart..." Which I've done. I've had my computer for just over a year if that info helps at all.
My mostly blind searching found me a "debugging kit" for the USB ports. But I don't want to download and use in case I royally mess up my computer, which may very well happen because I don't even know what's going on with my USB ports.

    Thanks!

    You might want to try:

do you have the issues with the tablet even when not using the USB thumb drive?
with the thumb drive, have you tried coping every thing off the drive, and then repartitioning the drive?

  • MacBook USB port broken. Need to backup through Windows PC.

Since my situation is a bit complicated I will be starting off with some background information:
    I currently own a MacBook Pro 15inch (mid 2010) 2.4GHz, Intel Core i5, 4GB (running OS X 10.8.5)
My USB ports haven't worked in 2 years (I assume that i must of over powered them) however, when I insert my USB powered speakers into one of the two USB ports it powers them, and with the use of an AUX I am able to transmit the sound BUT my MacBook is still not able to recognize any other USB or external hard drive device. Still not sure why only my speakers receive power through the technically broken USB ports so if anyone can offer any insight on this, that would be great.
Moving on to the main problem:
So I want to format and reinstall the software on my MacBook BUT FIRST I need to backup. Since my USB ports wont work I've tried to find other solutions. (Don't want to buy an AirPort Time Capsule).
I've tried the Belkin Network USB Hub but since it's software only supports up to OS X 10.5 It would not work on my device.
I have FINALLY found a convenient and cheap solution by setting up File sharing network (from my Mac to my old Vista, PC) and purchased My Passport Ultra.
The plan is to send my files to the PC and from there to save them onto the external hard drive (and then send them back to my Mac). Sounds easy HOWEVER, after some research I've noticed that in order to get My Passport to work with Mac and PC you have to reformat it (not sure if you have to format on both platforms in order to be able to use on both as well), so I have the following questions:
    1. Since My Passport wont connect to my Mac is there anyway of formatting the external hard drive through Windows and still be able to use with Mac? (if not I can always format the external hard drive on a friends Mac)
    2. I won't need to open the files on Windows, the PC is simply a gateway in order for me to get the files onto a hard drive, so do I still need to format it to work on Windows? Will the files still be usable when sent back to the Mac?
I have tried to explain my situation as simply as possible but if anyone has any questions or is unsure of something I have mentioned please ask. I want to avoid buying anymore devices in order to do this, so any solutions in which I can use what I have would be much appreciated. I cannot go to an Apple store as I no longer live in the UK and we do not have an Apple store here.
If anyone knows of another way to get the files on to My Passport (other than what I'm trying to do) I am open to discussion. Thanks in advance

my daughter's itunes library is on a computer that now has a broken usb port.  can she view her library and download from my computer?  is so, how?

If you set up Home Sharing and are on the same network you can share your library.  However you must be using the same itunes account.  Another option (if you are trying to download to a device) would be to sync over Wi-Fi.  I hhope this helps a bit.  If you let me know what you are trying to accomplish I may be able to give a better answer

  • USB Port Doesn't/ Does Work? PLEASE HELP.

So my USB port closest to the screen on my 13" macbook pro (late 2011) suddenly stopped working. I could date it back around 2 to 3 months ago that I remember it working. I usually work with a wirless mouse in one and a flash drive in the other. So anyway I went to talk to someone at the Genius bar and he said that my problem with my USB port is a special case. Any device put into the broken USB port can be powered (charged), but unable to be recognized. The rep at the Genius bar tells me that to get this fixed they will send my macbook out for $280.00. Any way someone can help me save some cash?

Using the other USB port, .....I assume one of the contact fingers is broken off?
There is nobody here than can fix that for you online or in person without parts replacement.
Did he indicate specific failure of the USB port?  ...what specifically, ....since he mentioned a price its only correct to assume a hardware fault.

  • Does Lenovo warranty cover USB ports?

I'm about to send my T400 in for maintenance due to a messed up motherboard, but before that 2 of the 3 USB ports had not been functioning for a while.

I think one of the USB ports is physically broken, with its insulator snapped off and one of the wires bent in.
Any chance the broken USB port is _causing_ the motherboard problem?  What are the symptoms?
There are quite a few posts here saying that bent pins in a USB connector shorted something (5V power, maybe) and prevented a motherboard from firing up.  If you straighten the bent pin does the mobo come to life?
I guess the end-game is the same either way.

  • How to do a security wipe if phone is stuck on start-up screen and your micro-usb port is also broken?

    Good day
A week or so ago, my  phone just out of the blue decided that it would not initiate fully anymore.  It was laying on charge and when i took it off after an hour or so, it just stuck on the service provider's screen before saying "loading personal settings".  I was informed that my os needed to be reinstalled, the problem is, my usb port ion my phone is also broken.  I took the phone in to a repair guy, but he wants to ask me an idiotic price to fix it and says he is able to do so without using my usb port?  Is there any way you can wipe your Blackberry 8520 and reinstall an O.S if your usb port on the phone is broken?  Please, this is a matter of life and death as there are a hell of a load of contacts, documents and emails i would like to save, but if not able to, I can handle that too, just need the phone to work, it's of the highest importance!
Thank you so much in advance.
    Juan

I take it that you do not have a recent back up of your phone's data?
Try starting your 8520 in Safe Mode.

If you can do that, you can get to the Security wipe function, but without a good USB port, I am not sure how you're going to load the OS. But try Safe Mode first.

  • Equium A100 - USB ports broken - all 4 of them.

    Hi,
I dropped my laptop about 40 cm onto a wooden floor the other day.
Now both side USB ports are totally broken, and the back 2 are pretty much broken too (If I wiggle the mouse usb cable in the back one I might get lucky for about 10 mins)
What can I do to fix this? and if it's not going to be easy to fix, are there any wireless mouses available which don't need a usb connection?
    Help!
    Thanks.

    Hi
You cannot fix this because the USB ports are a part of the motherboard and if you would like to fix this, then the whole motherboard should be replaced and this is vey expensive.
But as far as I know the notebook supports an PC Card slot. You can use PCMCIA cards, PC Card16bit and Cardbus (32bit).
You could purchase an USB PC card which provides a USB port functionality.
