Broken video after graphic packages update (savage + xorg files)

I have upgraded today and after rebooting right starting with slim the screen is unviewable so to speak, full of artifacts.
I have managed to take a screenshot though, to my surprise, the desktop featured looks much cleaner. See,
http://i48.tinypic.com/2uiet4y.jpg
There is 'merely' a stripe in the lower screen part whereas "live" the whole screen is covered with colums of artifacts that make it impossible to see what the active window is actually about. Maybe at first you are able to see a bit of it, especially in the upper part of the screen (the screen appears split horizontally with the lower screen unviewable) but the more you interact with that window the more it is affected by the artifacts. The latter seem to refresh themselves too.
The rest of the system appears to work as usual and there are no error messages anywhere in the logs. Searches so far regarding this issue have been fruitless and right now the only way to get a 'visible' system is to downgrade the savage, xorg-server, xorg-server-common and xf86-input-evdev files.
Anyone has had this kind of problems? I have seen some threads concerning problems with the latest xorg update but I am not sure if they may be related to this.
Honestly speaking, each time I see a savage driver update shiver runs down my spine lol

shetland_breeder wrote:In fact it looks as though Xorg is going to drop all the drivers for 'old' hardware.
As I have mentioned regarding the dropping of xaa IMHO it is quite a bad idea/big mistake taking into account how central or 'core' the X package is in order to use an 'old' computer as more than just as a server without the need of a graphical interface.
Of course there may be a (good) reason for this but taking into account the effects the dropping comes with without further alternatives just does not seem that 'right'.
shetland_breeder wrote:The answer seems to be the 'Windows' way - get a set of mostly working software and do 'pacman -Rns pacman' so you're never tempted to update it to a broken set.
I don't think it has to come to such a extreme 'deep freeze' extreme (yet?). Especially taking into account that there are more packages pacman deals with than the ones we are discussing here. And those are working fine.
Unfortunately, as I have just stated above, the ones discussed are 'core' ones in order to handle a smooth basic Linux desktop installation.
shetland_breeder wrote:Or switch to Debian - comes to the same thing I suppose ;-)
Sure, changing to a more conservative distribution is an alternative I have considered. And as long as it would be a rolling release it would be fine to me. But only for the time that distro and any other would reach the point we are at now.
Even though using a bleeding edge distribution like Arch can sometimes be a bumpy ride I think it also offers the chance of discussing things any other distribution will benefit from on the long run. In this case installations on 'legacy' hardware.
zorro wrote:Ideally, Xorg would have optional dependencies to support older drivers.
A good idea indeed though not sure if it is actually possible to keep 'catching up' with older hardware.
zorro wrote:Another alternative is to rebuild the latest release from source but include XAA from the previous release. Hmm.
Or a kind soul willing to create a xorg-server-legacy package (in AUR?)...

  • IMac freezes with Halo UB game - after graphics firmware update

    Hi
The graphics firmware update works good - the couple of things I found to freeze it work fine now.
But I have found one way to get the freeze and black screen plus the ASIC error in the system.log.
Open Halo UB 2.0.2 and set the video options to use 1920x1200. When I have it at 1344x840 or whatever, the game is fine.
But when I try to set Halo UB to 1920x1200, I get the freeze thing. Halo says it has to test the new video settings and says to hit escape if no dialog appears. Once I accept that, then the screen goes black and the freeze hits.
So I'm happy that everything's working good for all the other normal causes of the freeze. Hopefully Apple can now track down this issue.
Anyone else out there have Halo UB to try this out?
Maybe it's my Halo UB install. Mine was a fresh install this morning though.
    good luck!
    let me know...
    thanks!

Freezes with Jedi Academy as well, freezes after iMac update, 10.5.1 install, Firmware Update (which i had to do with Pacifist)...
just Freezes and everything needs to be restarted, haven't tried the HALO thing yet, not sure if i want to push my luck...

  • Having issues playing videos after the latest update

After the latest update for ITunes, I am having issues with some of my videos.  Some of my videos will play while others in attempting to play them will play back choppy, at times the picture will freeze and then all at once the video will start fast forwarding to catch up to where it should be, and then at other times the video will cut out intirely, the screen will be completely black without the control areas in the top right corner or the center of the bottom of the screen even being visible.
Have been unable to watch a large number of my TV series, and movies.

Try playing videos directly in Quicktime:
    1.) Open Quicktime
2.) Click File > Open File
3.) Navigate to your iTunes folder
    4.) Movies are in iTunes\Movies\, TV in iTunes\TV Shows\, podcasts in iTunes\Podcasts
5.) Select a video and open it
6.) Watch in awe as Quicktime plays it perfectly, full screen option is in the View menu BTW.
    iTunes 10.7.0.21 is a disaster.

  • 1280x720 mp4 videos stop playing video after 9.1 update, only sound works

After upgrading to 9.1, 1280x720 mp4 videos won't play video anymore, only sound. Any help?

I am having a similar problem with videos. After an update, some of my video files play and others do not. They are all in mpeg-4 video format so I don't know that is the difference except the videos that are not playing are larger files of movies. The shorter videos play fine. Any ideas? My quicktime is up to date and I'm using iTunes 9.1. Before updates I was able to view the videos without a problem.
I am guessing that because of the size of the videos...mine are 640x352 that does not play but 480x320 will play

  • Screen no longer works after Graphics Firmware Update

I received my new IMAC 20 inch a couple of days ago. Worked like a charm. perfect.
I received a request (software update) to update the Graphics firmware for the ATI 2600 processor.
I performed the update, but I can no longer use the IMAC. The screen just stays black, no longer displays any information. I hear the hard disk working thru the startup process, but the screen just stays OFF.
I zapped the PRAM, and restarted many times. No success.
Please help. It worked so fine before this major trouble.
    Patrick

The iMac Graphics Firmware Update 1.0 states:
This update is for 20-inch and 24-inch aluminum iMac computers with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor, running Mac OS X 10.4.10 or later with iMac Software Update 1.2.1 for Tiger, or Mac OS X 10.5 with iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard.
Perhaps you meant OS 10.5.1. The above update also states:
Note: If you are running Mac OS X 10.5.1, iMac Software Update 1.3 is included.

  • No video after windows 7 update

I haven't update my windows for couple of months but today I decided to update it and after updating and restart, the screen is blank. I could hear my skype turn on and everything else, but I couldn't see anything on my MacBook Pro unibody. So I log into my computer using logmein and I try to change the resolution but that part wasn't in there when I go to the video properties. It looks like that it could detect that there's a video card on it. I uninstall the the video driver and the screen turns on but when I install the driver back, the screen is blank again. I tried to download the lastest driver on nvidia website but that didn't work. So right now I roll back to the point where I knew the video was working and I'm waiting for a solution for this fix. I've been search everywhere for it but I don't see people have the same issue as mines.

Oh, I forgot to mention. The Windows 7 is 64 bit version.

  • Premier Pro CC won't play / render audio or video after today's update

Foolishly I allowed CC to update my software ( CC 2014.2 )  and now it won't play or render video or audio.  It will allow me to scrub through and see the video, but the play button just turns to a square and does nothing..  Trying to render anything does even less.
This behavior can be repeated in both in the source window, as well as the program window when I scrub the timeline.
Premier Pro worked fine yesterday, with the same files.  I booted onto a back up drive that had my old CC program cloned...  And it still works fine..    I think it's safe to eliminate hardware issues as well as file / file types...
I have deleted the Premier Pro app and reinstalled, I have reset the preferences, I have dumped the media cache.
I have tried to set up new files, both on the internal hard drive, as well as an external...  ( both work fine with the old system backup )
    Still the same NON results...
Running on an iMac, using OS 10.8.5
Processor  3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB
Any solutions would be greatly appreciated....

  • Podcasts are without video after iTunes 702 update !!

After updating to iTunes 702, my previously downloaded podcasts are not viewing any video, just the audio.
Anyone has the same problem ??

When I navigate via Music/Podcasts (or Podcasts straight off the main menu if you have your iPod configured that way), I get the audio and video podcasts and these are then played back audio-only (ie any video podcasts are played back from that menu as thought they were audio-only, which isn't a bad thing if I have my iPod in my pocket, as I guess it uses less power than generating the video which I'm not watching?).
To watch video podcasts including the video, I have to navigate through the menus via Videos/Video Podcasts, then I see only the video podcasts and any I select from there are played back audio+video.
If that isn't the case for you too, I don't have any suggestions because I don't think I am doing anything particular to make it work that way. This is with a 5.5G 80Gbyte iPod and the latest firmware and iTunes software.

  • Problem w/video after downloading Itunes update.

After updating my computer with I-tunes 8....I find now that I cannot watch my music videos nor preview them on the Itunes store. What happens when I try is I get a light blue and green static that actually looks pretty neat accept I'd prefer to be watching my intended video. Anybody encounter something similar and know how to correct whatever it is that has gone wrong??? My initial thought process is that it has something to do with QuickTime but knowing exactly what I don't have a clue. Thank you for any suggestions any of you may have.

The same thing happened to me before i re-imaged my computer. Your pop-up blocker may not be allowing for the video to play. You would be able to tell this immediately, however, because a box would pop up. If a box pops up, click allow. If no box pops up then u may have to do a number of things. First, make sure you have installed all of the updates to both the Adobe Flash Player and the QuickTime player. This is most likely the cause of the problem. For me, this was the problem. If your videos still do not play, try reinstalling itunes. Your computer should run the videos now! I hope i helped! ~Shanman~

  • No sound on videos after the last update before iOS 5

    Hi people,
Iam having the same problem as many iphone 4 users...when iam shooting video there is no sound unless i put on the earphones...the difference is that it used to shoot videos with sound normaly but after i updated to iOS 4.3.5 it stopped recording sound...i have videos with sound that i shot and its kind of wierd....i thought it was the update and i waited until the next one...which came iOS 5 but there is bug fix or something and i that some people refer to this as a hardware problem and not software so i would like to know if anyone has a clue about and any possible solution.

    Hey,
Advice you gave me sorted the problem transiently, but now I have sound on all programs, which is good! But now my user interface sounds (i.e. emptying trash) don't play! It's not that big of a problem but just slightly annoying!
I don't fancy spending another £5 on the phone to the useless shower of s* at apple technical support.

  • Problems with ITMS Videos after 1.1 Update

OK, so there are lots of posts about video problems on 5G ipods after software update 1.1 and what encoding methods were used etc etc.
After updating my 60GB iPod to 1.1 all my videos, including those purchased from the iTunes Music Store, suffer from audio problems.
The video playback is fine, no freezing like others have mentioned, but I get loud popping and clicking sounds on the audio, particulalry at the start of a clip.
Has ayone else experienced problems with video sound after the 1.1 update?
Restoring to software 1.0 resolved the problem so there is definitely a problem with 1.1 and ITMS content.
Apple need to sort this out. Fast.

I foolishly did the 1.1 upgrade to my 60G iPod. I found that, as we all know by now, that all ov my videos that weren't from Quicktime Pro or purchased through iTunes hang after about 30 seconds, and then continues without any audio. But, the really obnoxious part is that my videos that I converted via QuickTime Pro suffered from very strange audio artifacts. These would fall into the category of clicks, purrs, warbles and other strange noises in addition to the audio that is supposed to be there. That pushed me over the line, and I "downgraded" my iPod back to release 1.0. I did the "restore" to completely erase my iPod and then re-loaded it from iTunes. I had already upgraded iTunes, and it has no problems with my now-restored-to-version 1.0 iPod. By the way, you have to edit a system file in order to do the downgrade: Put the ipod in harddisk mode. Edit the file (hidden folder and file) \iPod_Control\Device\SysInfo Replace the line that have the word "buildID" with this line:
    buildID: 0x05908000 (6.0)
Then run the original iPod Updater to put 1.0 back onto it. This will leave you with the "feature" that any video that you change the Video Kind to TV Show will not show up on your iPod unless it's in a Video Play List. I actually like this, as it keeps the Video list from being cluttered up.
