Brother HL-5170DN

My faithful Brother 5170DN is giving me trouble on the MacBook Pro. I get multiple pages of:
ERROR NAME;
syntaxerror
COMMAND;
OPERAND STACK;
30976
The printer is on the network and works fine with the iMac, also running Tiger 10.4.6.
Many thanks!
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The problem is that brother printers use BR-script and not real PostScript. The CUPs drivers send raw postscript through to any printer they think is a postscript printer in this printer is not. Change the printer driver to one that is listed as using BR-Script. Make sure you set the correct number of input trays and deselect printer harddrives etc. Your HL-5170DN should then work perfectly.

  • Busy on port 631 to Brother HL 5170DN

I've been unable lately to print through Airport to my HL5170DN Brother laser. I'm going through a Belkin G wireless router. Each attempt to print brings up the "port 631 currently busy" error. Have tried erasing the printer list ( Control click on the printer name in setup ) and adding the printer again ( IP ) but no luck. When adding a new printer in the airport mode Bonjour momentarily "finds" the printer, then loses it. The printer has a permanent lease on the ip assigned by the router, and I have no problem if I connect to the router by ethernet and add the printer through bonjour. Any thoughts appreciated.

Port 631 is used by IPP. As a test you could try creating a network printer queue using one of the other IP protocols, such as LPD or HP Jetdirect-Socket.

  • Duplex Printing on HP K5400dtn

I can print a complete duplexed file from Pagemaker on this printer without a problem but InDesign CS2 4.0.5 always inverts the back side image when printing. If there is a dialog to set whether to flip on the top or the side (as there is on my Brother HL-5170dn) I cannot find it in either the HP driver or the InDesign dialog. I have to revert to printing one side at a time. . .or just go back to Pagemaker.
Is there any help out there?

Duplex controls are usually in the driver, generally advanced features, and are often called things like "Binding" rather than duplex or flip.

  • Printer Setup Utility always crashes- and am getting weird printer behavior

Just installed 10.5 on a fresh internal drive- machine is G5 2X2- settings imported from a 10.4 installation on another drive. Printer is a Brother HL-5170DN
    If I try to print from any app, the app doesn't crash, as has been reported by others, but the printer behavior is strange. I added the printer from the Print and Fax control pane, which saw the printer and appeared to be happy. But when I try to print any test document, the printer starts printing an error message on every sheet in its tray, literally running through the whole stack and then complaining it's out of paper, even though the document to be printed was only one page. Have never seen anything like that. The error message printed on paper is: ERROR NAME; undefined COMMAND; y OPERAND STACK;
Cannot launch Printer Setup Utility- always crashes. Have tried reseting printer system and rebooting, but no luck. It seems to be complaining that a file called "_CPLPPDGetFileInfo" is missing. The error log when I try to launch Printer Setup Utility is:

Thanks for the helpful info. I had upgraded to Leopard using Archive & Install and had an alias to the Printer Setup Utility from Tiger, which I kept trying to use not realizing that this now pointed to the old version in the Previous Systems folder.
Now I've deleted the whole thing and will remember to use the System Preference panel to configure my printers.

  • Printer spooler will not stay running

I work in a K-8 district that services around 350 computers. We also service a number of printers of which we run through print management in windows server 2008 R2. However, we've recently had a problem with the print spooler stopping and remaining stopped
until being manually started again, only to have the spooler stop shortly after. Specifically, we've only had this problem in one computer lab that has an HP CP3505 printer and a RICOH SP4100. We have tried a number of problem solving techniques, including
    (but not limited to):
    -Clearing the C:\windows\system32\spool\printers & C:\windows\system32\spool\drivers
-setting the recovery steps to "restart the service" in the service properties
-reinstalling the latest PCL5 drivers for the printers on our server
-diving into regedit to make sure everything checks out over there
    -restarting the printer
    -installing latest windows updates
-taking ownership of the spoolsv.exe (we gave both specific users and everyone access, no avail)
-reimaging the computers (without sysprep, this is next in our list of things to try)
We cannot shake this problem, and the lab is heavily used. Anyone have any clue to what may be going on?

This happened when i tried to remove unneeded drivers:
Failed to remove driver Brother HL-5170DN. The specified printer driver is currently in use.
Failed to remove package prnbr001.inf. Driver package is in use.
the Brother printer is not even in use on the computer, just an HP 3505 and the Ricoh. Tried freezing the spooler service and that locked me out of even getting to that menu. i'd submit a picture but apparent my account isnt "verified" (which it should be,
i clicked the link in the email they sent me)

  • Won't wake up printers brother hl1440

my mac pro used to startup my brother and hp printers from sleep, until I had a fresh install of 10.6 now computer won't wake up printers. yes I do have the newest drivers. If i disconect the printers from the mac and install the software again it works till the printers go to sleep and then it tells me it's off line!!any help out their! thanxs

I'll have to try this fix David!
I have a Brother 5170DN and a 2070N and they both seem to drop their ability handle print jobs, yet not their IP addresses. In my case, I have both setup with a Static DHCP address given out by my router, which gives me the ability to always know where I can check to see if they are online; however, even if I can use the web-admin site onboard the printers I still am unable to get them to spool a print job. Since your fix is basically making the IPs legitimately static and not DHCP forced static --as in my case-- I wonder if this is not an issue with the printers' release time on the DHCP address. I typically notice my problem every couple of weeks or so.
Anyway, thought we might be able to dig a bit deeper than just the fix that you suggest --I'll let you know if it works for my two printers.

  • How can I connect my MacBook Air to my Brother printer?

I have a Brother wireless printer and I'm trying to figure out how I can connect it to my MacBook Air. It came with 2 CDs, but since my laptop doesn't have a CD-rom, I obviously can't set it up that way. And the set up booklets don't say anything about this...can anyone help?

Any printer software that comes on CDs will either be available from the printer manufacturer's web site or from Apple. In fact, it is often more current than whatever versions are on the CDs or DVDs.
Also, in most cases, printers with wifi capabilities have to initially be setup by using a USB connection.

  • Can't find printer brother printer

    Can't find printer brother printer

    dechamp wrote:
I've been using my networked Brother printers on SL since day 1, actually since before day 1. No problems with IP printing and CUPS drivers at all. I've also been able to set up the scanner function over the network very easily.
I've set my printer to a static number, tell the printer installer to use IP printing, and type in the IP number and the Mac finds the printer and assigned the driver.
Have you tried "Resetting" the printer system by right clicking in the printer list box?
Yes, I did try resetting the printer system.
Obviously something is wrong because I can't add the printer. When I hit the plus sign it is not there unless I set up a Mac to share it.
    Thanks

  • Cannot print with Brother HL-2140 (CUPS does not complain) [SOLVED]

I've got a brother HL-2140 which I've installed according to these instructions: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Brother_HL-2040.  I am using the 2040 driver instead of the 2140 as there are reported issues with the 2140 driver and the 2040 driver is supposed to work anyways. It does in Ubuntu, and according to this Arch user: http://interskh.info/2008/12/install-br … linux.html
When I go to print a test page, nothing happens and the printer makes no sound whatsoever.

Downloaded PPD file from here: http://www.profv.de/brother/
Then, when I went to print, I'd get an error about foomatic.  I installed the following packages: foomatic-db, foomatic-db-engine, foomatic-filters and it worked.

  • Scanning multiple pages with preview and brother MFC-7440n

    Hi,
because of some problems with my old scanner after i installed snow leopard, i bought a new compatible one. It's a brother MFC-7440n with apple build-in drivers.
When i start scanning to preview with more than one page, there will be a pdf document for every page. It doesn't matter if i choose "create just one document".
First i wondered because in leopard preview multiple pages are displayed like in snow leopard. But this is wrong. There is one pdf file for every page.
How can i change that issue? When i scan more than one page, i wan't one pdf document with multiple pages, not a pdf per page.
    Thanks a lot.
    Dominik

    Hi Dominik,
What about Brother's scanner software? Do they have a scan program you can use to create multiple page documents? I have a Canon, and its software did that. The only other way is how I explained in my previous post. I have no issue using Preview for the simple document scanning I do. But if you have more needs, perhaps the Brother scan program should be installed.
Brother has issued a scanner driver update on 9/10....

  • How do I create a new account for an iPod that is on an existing account?  My brother and I have shared an account for five years, and now that I'm moving out, I want to create my own account but still want to be able to play the music I've purchased.

My brother and I have shared an account for five years, and now that I'm moving out, I want to create my own separate account but still want to be able to play the music I've purchased over five years.

In order to continue to play and sync the music you purchased with your old account, you'll need to authorize your new computer/iTunes library to do so.  You can do this by choosing Store -> Authorize This Computer and then entering in your old account credentials.
That's all you should need to.  Then just create your own account and start purchasing and using it the same you have with the old one.

Apps are locked to the Apple ID that was used to download them. You will have to sign in as your brother in order to update it.

  • My ipod 3g wont allow me to restore to factory because my brother forgot the passode and ive tried all the steps on other questions what do i do it wont work.

my brother set a passcode on his ipod and forgot what it was, ive tried all the things other questions ask and a pop up comes and says cannot regester the ipod without unlocking it, what do i do????? anyone know

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
