Brought back click Wheel back from the dead

Hello forum,
Newbie question from a newbie poster. I have a 40 gig Click Wheel that I had left for dead. I was able to get it working (hopefully not temporarily. My question for any knowledgeable user out there is; I haven't used this iPod since it failed on me 2 years ago and I've purchased a replacement 5th gen since. My desktop does not have the original install any longer for the the Click Wheel. What I want to do is re-install the install CD on a notebook running XP independent of my iPod/iTunes program on my desk top. If I do a fresh install on my notebook, will I be able to get the most current version of the software for my Click Wheel, if available on the support page? I noticed the current version I should be running in the help section and I would think it's more current than the one on the install disk. The other question is for my iTunes. Can I install the current iTunes version and not have to install any previous version? I'm assuming(hoping) that all bugs or fixes from previous upgrades are covered in the new version?
Sorry for the long winded post. I am anxious to get this iPod back to use.

ok, just give you a brief idea.
It used to have 2 software needed to install for the iPod, an iPod Updater and iTunes, but now we can install just one software i.e. iTunes and when we connect our iPod, it tells whether the software is the most update.
Try to download and install the latest version of iTunes here

There is your problem. DVDs that ship with a Mac are machine specific. You will need to purchase a retail copy of the DVD $29.

  • AGP 400 G4 back from the dead... and needing another HDD and a USB2 card!

    Hello!
Well, my old 400mhz Sawtooth G4 is back up! OMG! It's so much faster than the old 400mhz iMac DVSE (G3) from the same year - and I don't know if that's due more to the processor, cache, or video ram, but i'm not complaining!
I have a WD hard drive that's currently installed in my iMac - an 80G, EIDE drive. Inside the G4, I currently have a 60GB Maxtor drive (that I removed from the iMac a while back). I need to put the HDD in - but seem to have a problem. if you've ever seen the HDD sled that the the original HDD comes in - you'll notice that it is, for lack of better term, a double-decker sled. There's a lower "slot", if you will, that contains one drive - attached using the screws on the top of the HDD. There's also a second "slot" above that appears to need me to screw in this HDD using screw holes on the side! This would be fine - except that this sled bumps out on one side about 1/4" - so I'd need very long screws to install the HD - I don't have them.
Here's a picture: If the HTML won't work here, just visit the site.
    http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c384/digidan/G4-HDD-annotated.jpg
I realize it's a bit difficult to see, but it's the best I have at the moment. See the circled screw, and how it's "bumped back" from the rest of the sled? Also note the short IDE cable.
There are other drive bays to towards the front, but the installed IDE cable only has enough length to reach this top bay. In addition, the ATA/IDE cable that came with the WD Drive is not long enough to reach to the next bay over. There's got to be something I'm missing. Next to going out and buying an ATA controller, there must be some way to use a second drive.
    Ideas?
Secondly, I need to find a USB 2 PCI cad. I've heard that you just need to make sure that the card box says "Mac" on it somewhere. Our local best buy has a 2-port card for $30, and CompUSA has a 4 port for $40, both specifiy work with Mac. Is there a place online that has these cards for less, but is not ambiguous about OS?
Also - would a USB 2 PCI card slot give put out enough power to use a USB thumb drive, or charge an iPod?
Thanks, and let me know if I didn't make that clear!

15" 1.67 Powerbook G4 (Jan 2005), Slot loading 400mhz iMac DV SE,   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   4G Clickwheel and 5G Vid iPods, 400Mhz Sawtooth G4 (work in progress)

If you're only going to have (2) hard drives
installed in the G4, you'd be better off moving one
of the single drive sleds to the dual-drive stack
    bracket's position. Sonnet's "TCB-AGP" ribbon cable kit, includes custom-made
cables having adequate spacing between the two drive
connectors, allowing them to be mounted side-by-side.
This eliminates heat issues caused by placing one
drive on top of the other, preventing the
dissipation of heat generated by the lower drive.
True, and a pretty good idea, but I don't want to pay $30 just yet - I'll be back in texas (and to a Fry's Electronics store) by thanksgiving - So I'll have a bit of a... shopping list Since they have pretty much every concievable type of component you can think of, I'm sure they'll have some cheap, individual ATA cables I can make work. Is it just a standard ATA-66 cable? I suppose ATA 133 is backwards compatible too, considering the 60 Gig drive is ATA 133! (who knew?!)
As per the "long screws", I misunderstood what you were trying to say, and the way it was supposed to be mounted. I thought that it was supposed to be mounted from only one side! Needless to say, this didn't make sense. I didn't realize that the left side of the bracket actually bends in like that - neat.
So, all that's left now is to get a USB 2 card. OWC has an Iogear (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/IOGEAR/GIC251U/) card that looks good - does anyone have experience with this card and the sleep issue? I realize that it's a rather random problem, so there's no way to know for sure whether or not it will have probems, but I'd like input on it if anyone has some.
And I STILL think internal USB/FW ports aren't much more than a gimmick.... I have yet to see a "Internal USB device". Oh well, I suppose it's good to have if/when it's ever needed.
    Thanks,

  • Bringing Songs Back from the Dead?

Hey, everyone. xD I had quite a generous amount of songs on my other computer. I always meant to bring them over to this computer, but I never got the chance.
Recently, the hard drive was fried, so the songs are pretty much lost. However, is there a way to bring the songs to this computer without getting the old computer back? Like, since I bought them from iTunes store, can I re-download them?
I didn't think I could, because a lot of people could get songs that way. However, it would be a lot easier than buying all of the songs over again.
    Any help is appreciated!

*Recently, the hard drive was fried, so the songs are pretty much lost.....since I bought them from iTunes store, can I re-download them?*
The policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage." iTunes Store: Purchased content can be downloaded only once
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. If you click on any of the links on this page you'll find a space at the bottom to email your query: iTMS Customer Service

  • Hard drive back from the dead

    Here is what has happened...
I tried to wake my MacBook from sleep last night and was greeted by a clicking sound from my HD and a frozen computer. Proceeded to shut down then restart and got the same clicking sound along with the question mark folder. Over the next two hours I tried every fix I could find on here and every time got the clicking sound and the question mark folder. When booting from the SL install disk I could not see the HD in disk utility. So I was just about 100% sure the HD was dead. But...
I tried it again today just to see what would happen and it started straight up. I have now been running it for about an hour without problem.
About 6 months ago I had a similar problem where it froze after sleep and the HD made the same clicking sounds. But in that situation it started up without problems after a couple of restarts. It has run relatively problem free since then (with a possibly higher frequency of "beach ball" slow downs and freezes).
So my question is, is my HD just having a prolonged/intermittent death?, is it some way defective?, or is something else going on? Similar symptoms are discussed in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10509966&#10509966 The consensus there was that it was either a bad HD or a loose/defective hard drive cable. There is no mention of the clicking sounds in that thread though, so I wonder if that points more to my hard drive.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I had an iBook that started with the same symptoms; freezes, clicking sound; usually the armature. It became more frequent. I erased the drive, zeroed the drive. But, after a short time, the drive failed and had to replace.

  • [SOLVED]Intel HDA HDMI Keeps Coming Back From The Dead Like a Vampire

I have an Asus H87M-Pro mobo with a E3-1265L v3 Intel CPU.  This CPU does my audio and video, but the problem is I haven't had audio since I installed this mobo.  Dead silent.
I believe the problem must be that HDMI audio is siezing card0, which I infer is the default sound slot, but blacklisting the modules hasn't worked:
    blacklist snd-hda-intel-hdmi
    blacklist snd-hda-codec-hdmi
... and setting those modules to never, never take card0 hasn't worked:
    options snd-hda-intel-hdmi index=-2
    options snd-hda-codec-hdmi index=-2
alsamixer always comes up first with
    Card: PulseAudio
    Chip: PulseAudio
I can <f6> and choose HDA Intel PCH and it's not muted, but that doesn't get me audio.
With no settings in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf I get:
    $ aplay -l

I have never had a problem with audio before.  Anyone know what's going on here?

The first index value (1) corresponds to first id (PCH) and since sound cards are counted from 0, this sets HDMI as primary. This should become pretty clear following the example on wiki.
Oh it's clear when you have different sound cards, as with their example of the MIA.  But what's not clear at all within the Intel driver, is the relation between "index value" (an utterly abstract term unconnected with anything substantive), and ID.  I infer that the IDs in this case are PCH and HDMI.  But HDMI has two possibilities, analog and digital, as does PCH.  How can HDMI have an analog function?  And is PCH my goal? And what does PCH mean anyway?  Why does everything have HDMI in the name?  Where does Pulse fit in all this, since alsamixer considers it the default?  And why is the module named snd-hda-intel-hdmi.ko yet when it's loaded it's called snd_hda_intel_hdmi?  And which should I use in blacklist.conf?  And why is there a snd-hda-intel-hdmi.ko and snd-hda-codec-hdmi.ko?  And which should I use in blacklist.conf for options?
See none of this is explained in the wiki, and yet is fundamental to understanding how to set this up.  Whoever wrote the wiki already knows all this and assumes the reader does too, which is a common failing of tech writers.  With huge gaps in the information, I can't begin to synthesize a solution.  Maybe fundamentals aren't important to the kids these days.  They will find out soon enough though.
    emeres wrote:
    options snd_hda_intel enable=1,0
This is ambiguous, since, like I previously stated snd-hda-intel is used by both cards. Again the link to wiki where it is explained step by step how to determine vid and pid and use it with options. Vid and pid are used to determine a specific card and so specific options can be set for a specific card. They can be used with both suggestions. Yes there are very unlikely scenarios, where it might cause more trouble than good.
    I think you mean this:
    blacklist.conf:
    options snd-hda-intel id=PCH,HDMI index=0,1
    options snd-hda-intel-hdmi index=-2
    options snd-hda-codec-hdmi index=-2
    # aplay -l

card 1: HDMI [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Unfortunately it doesn't work.  Notice that now everything has HDMI in the string... ridiculous.
By vid/pid, I think you mean this:
    # lspci -nn |grep -i audio
00:03.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller [8086:0c0c] (rev 06)
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High Definition Audio Controller [8086:8c20] (rev 04)
05:00.0 Multimedia video controller [0400]: Conexant Systems, Inc. CX23885 PCI Video and Audio Decoder [14f1:8852] (rev 03)
Where's HDMI?  Where's analog?  Guessing that "4th Gen Core Processor HD Audio Controller" might be HDMI:
    blacklist.conf:
    # PCH
    options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto vid=8086 pid=8c20
    # HDMI
    options snd-hda-intel index=1 model=auto vid=8086 pid=0c0c
    # Hauppauge
    options snd-hda-intel index=2 model=auto vid=14f1 pid=8852
    alsaplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 1: ALC892 Digital [ALC892 Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 2: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Now thankfully I do now have audio for the first time on this mobo.
But HDMI is now 3rd? And there is no Hauppauge?  Can anything be done about that?

I have done everything suggested by Apple. It does not show up in iTunes. It is a model  A1288. It was working fine until the battery ran down. I hate to throw things away.

    After charging overnight
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Mate, I'm trying to find out if it was shipped like that or not. If someone else has had the same issue then I can go back to Apple and have them look into it further. If not then as I said Vodafone is selling second hand phones and they will have to replace the phone.
Vodafone account manager is saying that he has never heard of anything like it.
So I'm left with one of 3 answers.
1: The phone was shipped like that so its a factory error.
2: The Apple genius doesn’t know what he's talking about then I can go back to the store and ask for a second opinion.
3: Vodafone is selling second hand phones as new.
I need to narrow it down so I can deal with the account manager appropriately

  • Just got back from the Apple Store...optical drive officially dead

I just got back from the Apple Store, which confirmed what I feared all along. I received my MBP C2D over the holidays and was worried when it had trouble booting up several times. After trying to burn a few cds (some would quit, others worked fine), and a few discs that refused to read or eject I visited the boards to find out that issues with the Matshita UJ 587 were widespread. At this point my computer does not even recognize the ATA or Disc Burning hardware or the OSX disc inside. The only positive to come out of this is the customer service offered by Apple. I took the computer to the genius bar and the computer refused to boot up after the tech installed an OSX disc (hence the stuck cd inside). They are giving me a new computer since this one is brand new, but unfortunately I will have to order it from Apple Care since it is a custom job. For all of you out there with early MBP C2D optical drives that are acting up I feel your pain. Get your computer into an Apple store before the problem gets worse, these optical drives are awful.

Thank you. After 2 hours on the phone with Apple Care this morning they finally confirmed what the Mac Genius told me last night. The computer was shipped back this afternoon and I'll post again if there's any trouble with the new unit, I think I just got a lemon with this one...too bad. This is my first Mac so I'm really trying hard to stay positive.

I lost equipment due to lightening strike several years ago, which also had old equipment and was not available. I gave insurance images and provided original receipts (my purchases were made on Apple.com), and Apple provided electronic copies of the receipts. You may want to contact Apple and check, if they can provide a copy. Insurance may depreciate the original value. I was offered residual value which i used to buy newer replacements, and provided the receipts for replacements back to insurance.

    Hello Tina,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like you would like to download your songs from iTunes Match.  You can do this by turning iTunes Match back on and clicking the cloud icon with the downward facing arrow next to the songs that you would like to download to your computer:

Assuming you bought the song at the iTunes Store, you can go here
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/
and follow one of the "paths" to get what you need or to an Apple customer support employee.  One path is to click Contact Support at the bottom of the list of choices, and use the Express Lane.
The iTunes app also has a way to report a problem with a purchase.  Select iTunes Store in the sidebar (of the iTunes window).  Toward the upper right corner, click on your Apple ID.  This gets you to your Account Information screen.  Find Purchase History and click See All.  On that screen, you can select a specific purchase with that problem, and Report a Problem.
If you want to try to figure out WHY that song does not play on your iPod shuffle, please post back...
