Browsed pages recalled when shutting down firefox
After I have browsed for a few pages, and I then decide to shut firefox down, I tend to see flashes of pages I browsed during the shutdown sequence. The pages may not necessarily be those of tabs not focused upon but can also be ones previously closed.
Try closing Firefox by clicking File | Exit

When I on my Laptop, Acer Aspire 5735 with Windows 7 Ultimate run Firefox all runs perfectly smooth, all is working as expected, but when I go to Sleep mode or Hibernate (Firefox remains open) after turning on Firefox is not active any more, all open tabs are there but surfing is unavailable. Firefox reports message that it is in Offline mode (but menu File > Work Offline is not checked and if I check it and uncheck it again it doesn't have any impact). Which means If I open new tab and write web address it wont open, if I click any link in opened tabs from before, it wont open anything and it will show message that Firefox is in offline mode. After that I shut down Firefox by using Close(x) button and it disappears from desktop but it remains in memory and active processes not allowing any other instance of Firefox to be run. Finally I shut it down on force (End process) and start another instance and all works perfect. I am not sure is this only my problem with hardware/software configuration so I wanted to share this.
This is a pain but I have resolved it. This is instructions for Windows 7 but it may be the same on other Operating systems.
Note: "YOUR USERNAME" relates to the account you log on to Windows with.
# First go to control panel / folder options and uncheck Hide extensions for known file types, check Show hidden files and folders and check Show hidden operating system files then click apply and OK.
# Go here : C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\ and copy the Profiles folder to your desktop.
# Go here : C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\ and copy the Profiles folder to your desktop. You will need to rename this as you already have a Profiles folder so name it Profiles2.
# Uninstall Firefox (selecting to remove all user settings) then go here: C:\Program Files\ and delete the Mozilla Firefox folder.
# Go here : C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Roaming and delete the Mozilla folder
# Go here: C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Local\ delete the Mozilla folder.
# Open another browser (i.e. Internet Explorer) and download and install C-Cleaner here:
# Once installed run the Registry cleaner over and over until no problems are detected and exit the application. You may now uninstall it but it is probably one of the best free apps available as it has a better uninstaller than Windows does and controls which programs run when Windows starts without using the 'msconfig' command.
# Now download the latest version of Firefox with your other browser and install it then run the application once and close it down.
# Open the Profiles folder on your desktop and inside you will find one or more folders with a name ending in .default (i.e. uomifhku.default). Right click each folder and select Properties to see which contains the highest amount of data or the bigger file size. Once you have done that open the largest folder and make sure there is nothing in there with ... @security.compass written on it. If there is then delete it. Hold your left mouse button and move your mouse pointer over all of the files to highlight in blue. Put your mouse cursor on any one of the files, right click and select 'Copy' to copy them all to system memory and then close the folder.
# Go here: C:\Users\"YOUR USERNAME"\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles and find the folder ending in .default then open it. Now right click anywhere on the background in the main Payne containing the files and select 'paste'. When prompted to Overwrite Files and Merge Folders always accept and proceed. Once done, close the window.

Start Firefox and if all is well you should be working again and it back in the state you left it last without the bug.

Firefox 18.0 works well when I open it on a 32-bit desktop. I can open any website (I use only one tab). But when I shut down Firefox, I get the "Firefox crashed" message. It reloads ok, but I've never had this problem with any Firefox version before. I downloaded another copy of 18.0 and the same thing happened. 18.0 works perfectly on a 64-bit laptop. Both computers are wired to the router. I keep my security, Windows 7, etc. updated.
If I can download 17.x, I'd like to see if it happens there, too It never did before. I would appreciate your suggestions. Thanks.

This happens every time when shutting down the system?
Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
* Microsoft Safety Scanner
* MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
* TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility
* Hitman Pro
* ESET Online Scanner
Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Hello!
I just figured this out.....When Firefox is open, my Illustrator CS2 modifier keys stop working?
As soon as I shut down Firefox, they start working again. Please help!
Thanks!
This happened
Every time Firefox opened
== Not sure.Try to create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

When shutting down, FF does not save tabs or ask if I want to save them.
Several times recently, when shutting down, the small window asking if I want Firefox to save tabs does not appear, and the tabs are lost.
One of the changes in Firefox 4: by default Firefox 4 does not display the "Save Tabs and Exit" warning message when closing multiple tabs, but it can be turned back on by changing some preferences.
*<u>Saving tabs was not removed from Firefox 4</u>, but it works a bit differently.
**By default, Firefox 4 will not ask to save tabs, but instead it will always save your tabs on exit. You can restore them next time by choosing "Restore Previous Session" from the History menu, or pressing the restore button on Firefox's default home page.
**<u>Note: This was a decision by the developers. On this forum, we are all uncompensated volunteers here to help other users. The developes/employees of Mozilla/Firefox rarely, if ever visit here.</u>
To display the "Save Tabs and Exit" message when closing multiple tabs, you can do the following:
#Type about:config in the URL/Location/Address bar and press the Enter key
#Accept the warning message (promise to be careful)
#The preferences page/list will open
#Filter = browser.tabs.warnOnClose
#If its value is set to false, double-click on it (in the lower panel) to toggle its value to true
#Repeat steps 4 and 5 for these following 3 preferences also:
#*browser.warnOnQuit
#*browser.warnOnRestart
#*browser.showQuitWarning
#**Note: last pref is new in Firefox 4b12, may need to add (boolean)

Do i have a virus? I get asked when shutting down do I want to continue or abort the installation.
I am not installing anything. You may have partially installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. In addition to the files listed in the support article, you may also have to remove the following in the same way:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.download.plist
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.ltvbit.plist
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.Installer.completer.update.plist
~/Library/Application Support/IM.Installer/Completer.app
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
If you find Apple's instructions too hard to follow, ask for an alternative that doesn't require you to trust a black-box application without knowing what it does.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked. -

Issues when shutting down Arch
When shutting down arch, as normal, System > Shutdown, it then shows the CLI and the login prompt:
mikeyd@DEATH_STAR: login
It used to sit there for 5 seconds then shutdown as usual, now it takes more than 20 seconds, if at all, is something holding up the shutdown process. Any help would be amazing.
Thank you
If you need any output, let me know

As my title says, after closing Firefox, at times I have to use task manger to shut down firefox.exe*32 at times. I've left it running for up to 5 minutes to see if it shuts down/closes and it doesn't. I've also reloaded Firefox. My system is a Lenovo H210 with 3 gig of Ram and no added video card, the OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1. I realize the memory is on the small side. I did try to update VLC player this morning to V 2.1.2 but it fails to run after instal due to file errors.
BillHello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

MacMini Hangs When Shutting Down
Hi all.
I've tried looking up the answers to this but I have a slightly different issue from others who had issues when shutting down.
This started a few months ago. What happens is when I click to shut down the computer, everything starts closing out. The top menu bar disappears but then nothing else happens. I'm basically looking at my wallpaper with nothing on it but my dock will still be up. When I look on my dock the only thing that appears to be active is the "Finder" folder. When I click on it nothing happens, however, if I right click it says that the application is not responding and gives me the option to relaunch, but nothing happens. So it seems like there's something going on with the "Finder" folder that is preventing it from shutting down.
For what it's worth, I did run "Verify Disk" from Disk Utilities that said everything came back okay. I unplugged any external devices hooked up via USB like my USB hub to see if there was something going on there.
I have a 2012 Mac Mini.
In the past, I have let it go all night to see if it would eventually shut down and it won't. I have to force shut it down. Ideally, I don't want to do this. Has anyone else had this issue?
Thanks! These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0Note that, though Linc is certainly correct about Avast, and about many other anti-virus programs, his is an extreme sentiment that, like most extreme sentiments, is not entirely accurate. Some Mac anti-virus software is quite well behaved, such as ClamXav and Sophos. Whether you need it or not is not for someone else to tell you. You should let your personal tastes, behaviors and requirements dictate whether you use anti-virus software, within the framework of an educated protection plan. See my Mac Malware Guide for more information that can help you figure all that out.

Conditional cross references (an easier way?)
Hi gurus, Forgive me if this is an absurdly simple problem, but our team just isn't figuring out an elegant solution. What we need is two types of crossreference formats - one for print, one for PDF/the web/any other hyperlinkable medium. We would li
