Browser not responding - link to www speed?

Safari and Firefox often go into "not responding" mode for minutes on end. Unison too. Is there any connection betwen this problem and internet acess speed? I'm on very rural uncapped 256kb plan. If my connection to the web stalls - will these browsers "hang" or is it more likely a memory issue?
Some months back I upgraded to 10.6.8 and it works fine except now I'm starting to get the 'wall of death' - the dark curtain which descends and prompts a re-start. Worrying as I am 100's of miles from any Apple store/repair.

  • Has anybody else been seeing (Not Responding) at the top of the screen and having thier browser not respond to wheel scrolling and scrolling with the usual slider at the right part of the screen?

I have noticed my Firefox browser is having way too many incidences where it is "Not Responding". The browser freezes up for a second quite often and the "Not Responding" message will appear at the top of the screen.
The browser will also not scroll with either the scroll bar on the right nor with the mouse wheel. Both used to work in previous versions of Firefox, but it seems to have gotten worse since Firefox 5 0r 6. The same with the "Not Responding". It is happening more with Firefox 7 than in at least the past two versions.
Anybody else having these issues? Seems like they are hand-in-hand. Thanks for any and all help or advice. It's making me pretty angry since I'm online all day for work.
Just an FYI. At the bottom of my troubleshooting copy/paste is a suggestion to update the driver for my graphics. That was a no-go. I tried that.

Thank you for this first reply! I'll have to give this a try later....the main laptop I experience this on crashed not more than an hour after I posted this issue. I'm on a tiny, slow netbook that hasn't had the same problem. Now I'm wondering if I picked up a Trojan on the main laptop and the "Not Responding" message is a side effect of a virus or Trojan.
One of the system .dll files has been corrupted and I'm not being allowed to use recovery discs, previous disc images, or any recovery options. That was an all day sucker yesterday and from what I've read on forums and have researched, it appears I'm going to need to reload the operating system. If it is indeed a Trojan/virus, I'm surprised it made it through my antivirus and firewall. Anything is possible, really.
Thanks again, I'll get back with results once I get the wounded laptop back up and running.

  • Browser not responding when  there is a Exception in ActionScript class

    Hi ,
I am trying to debug my Application , so under the ActionScript lass i am using some
    trace print messages .
But the Problem is that when ever there is an Exception on to my ActionScript class , the browser is not responding
Means i need to manually close the Browser by killing the process itself .
I guess there is something problem with the FlashPlayer tat is runnning the swf file .
could anybody please let me know how to resolve this issue .

When there is an exception, you need to manually close the browser by either clicking on the close button of browser or stop button of the debugger. There is another button in debugger which allows you to ignore the exception and resume execution. It looks like a play button with green color.

  • Browser Not Responding on top and SLOW SLOW SLOW

    I'm using 18.0.1
I had the version just before this and yesturday when I was browsing any website my Firefox would freeze up - then say Not Responding in the hearder then 10 secs later load the page..
    I Rebooted Computer
I Reset my router / modem (even called to see if there was an issue so they manually rebooted it for me)
I uninstalled and reinstalled it and still the same..
I'm now forced to use Chrome as I can't do work..
    I'm using Win 7 64bit (8 gigs of ram)
Again this just started - and it worked perfectly for over 6 months just rebuild my computer to a new faster one..
Any info would be great.. as I don't like Chrome but might be forced to use it..

Note that extensions like Firebug can cause problems, so it may be best to leave them disabled until you really need them or install the extension in a separate profile.

  • Browser not responding...

I have an older Mac Pro (2008 time frame), and recently upgraded to the OS X Yosemite OS (Version 10.10.2).  I was told the computer had enough capability to handle the new OS, but I've been having problems with the browser stalling within a few key stokes of logging on, especially when browsing internet news sites... When it occurs,  I "force quit" the browser, re-load it, and withing a few minutes, it's "not responding" again... and it happens over and over again.  I'm not sure if it might be some sort of virus, or incompatibility, the OS, or something else... I usually run Firefox, but have tried Safari as well... with the same results... would appreciate some help...

Run this and post the results hee:

Also, after you have a problem note the exact time and then open the Console app in Finder>Applications>Utilities and look for log entries at the time. Post suspicious one here

  • Firefox, as default browser, opens Outlook 2010 hyperlinks very slowly, but other browser open, the links, at normal speed, whats going on?

Running Windows 7, 64-bit, with Firefox 19.0 as default browser. When opening hyperlinks in Outlook 2010, Firefox takes an exceeding amount of time to open the link. All other browsers, when set as default, open links at normal rate. Have tried clearing the cache and cookies and this fixes the problem temporarily. Help!

If you have Firefox closed while opening a hyperlink then it may take some time. It will also take some time if you are opening it for the first time since the boot up of your computer. Add-ons may also cause startup issues - please see below for troubleshooting.
'''Try the Firefox Safe Mode''' to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or use the Help menu item and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode"''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.

  • Browser not responding, often using up 100% CPU

*tl;dr My web browser (and often other programs) freeze and Activity Monitor shows they're using a large amount of memory.*
I've been having performance problems with my MacBook for a few weeks now, with single programs causing my computer to heat up, freeze and make noise. Although I don't know what the cause may be, I've ordered 2 more sticks of RAM that will, hopefully, make things work smoother. But I'm still curious as to what is happening and why.
I'm using Webkit (webkit.org) right now, and yesterday I ran Onyx in an effort to alleviate problems like this, (a poor page ins/page outs ratio, specifically), but that, evidently, may have had the opposite effect. Within the past hour that I've had my computer on, this has happened twice. I have only had Webkit open- no other applications. This has started happening a few weeks after I upgraded to Snow Leopard, perhaps that has something to do with it.
    Thanks.

  • Mac hotter, strange sound, and internet browser "not responding"

    Dear Mac experts and users,
I bought my MacBook (OS X 10.4.9) in January, 2007.
Recently, some following problems happened that I would like to ask you for helps.
    1. The battery sometimes stops charging at 97% power until power supply was cut and recharged.
    2. As a cycle of about 20 min, the machine sounds "ton...ton" like a small sound caused by a finger flicking on a lastic sheet. The left side of the computer become hotter during working time.
    3. I can not open a website containing a Java application or server like 3-D molecule shows or sonething like that although Java Web start .app and other Java plug-ins are available in the Mac Library. I have re-installed the latest Java updates from Apple but the situation is not improven.
    4. When I open a site with much data like a whole genome sequence from GenBank, FireFox completely freezes, Safari slows down and machine become noisy with sound like its fans.
That's all I feel think torubles to my Mac. Please share with me your experiences and tell me what should I do.
    Thank you!

      Mac OS X (10.4.9)   MacBook/Intel Core 2 Dual 2.0 GHz/RAM 1.0 GB/HDD 80 HB

    Hi Vliet, Philsmith, and others,
Thank you for your kind suggestions.
My MacBook is equiped with a RAM of 1 GB. There is still 53 GB free in the HDD. Usually, using Activity Monitor to check, I see that free memory during working time is small (less than 100 MB) but with a not much percentage of CPU used.
I have a version of OnlyX installed and run in my computer. Could you please show me any kind of Hardware Test application?
    Best regards,

  • When trying to open a link in the page I am on and open it in a new Tab the browser stops responding.

I open the browser and the Hime Page opens as expected. When I open a link to an item or article on the page in a new Tab Firefox stops responding and thye top line on the screen shows that to be the case. The only way to resolve the issue is to exit or close Firefox and start again. This has just started yesterday (Oct 12) as before that the process worked fine.
When I open a new Tab and then type in a new web site it will open and allow access with no problem, provided I have not open a link as outlined in the first paragraph. I can open several tabs in this manner and Firefox works as expected. But if I try to link from any page and open in a new Tab i get the "not responding" situation again.
After closing Firefox so I can restart it, the browser will open but the first screen will be a blank tab rather than my home page. I can open web sites and Firefox proceeds as expected as long as I do not try to open a link from within the page in a new Tab. I get the same "Not responding" situation.
If I immediately close Firefox after it opens without my homepage and then restart it then my home page will open as expected.
I have not made any changes to programs or setups in Firefox or on my computer in the immediate time before the problem started.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Having some issue with Browser: all links in web pages for various sites do not work. Browser was working fine for year or so just sopped the other day

Are your links including "www" at the beginning? Is your default browser correct? If you have a backup just use that backup when your browser worked, to put it in its previous state, but first backup what you have so that you can upload your history ie if you still need it

    Hello Guy.
First of all, and although possibly not related to your problem, I will remind you that the version of Firefox you are using at the moment as been discontinued and is no longer supported. Furthermore, it has known bugs and security problems. I urge you to update to the latest version of Firefox, for maximum stability, performance, security and usability. You can get it for free, as always, at [http://www.getfirefox.com www.getfirefox.com].
As for your issue, you may be having a problem with some extension or plugin that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?

    (1) Disable the Protected Mode feature of the Flash Player plugin.
The following pages provide different ways to do that:
    * Adobe support article under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]
    * Manual steps: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/968190?page=5#answer-509209
    * Batch file to automate the manual steps: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/982093#answer-518078
Flash needs to completely unload from memory (restarting Firefox might help) before this would take effect.
    (2) Set Flash to Click-to-Play ("Ask to Activate").
This will delay Flash from starting on a page until you approve it, which will help distinguish Flash-generated issues from page load and layout issues.
To set "Ask to Activate", open the Add-ons page using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. Look for "Shockwave Flash" and change "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate".
When you visit a site that wants to use the Flash, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.
    ''Any improvement in these scenarios?''
