Browser usage

I switched to an iMac from a PC about 6 weeks ago. I've been using Safari as my browser & have been perfectly happy with it. I've learned my way around pretty good after using IE for years, but I'm sure there's more to learn. Anyway, I'm mostly looking for information, opinions. I see there are a lot of people who use alternate browsers such as Firefox. What are the advantages, disadvantages of these alternate browsers compared to Safari?
Thanks,
Debbie

I should have said Safari Enhancer, a free program found here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17776 (free)
Its features are:
" Enabling the Debug Menu
Removing underlines from hyperlinks
Increasing the font size in the bookmarks sidebar
Disabling Safari’s web content cache
Forcing the download of all PDF files
Changing the colour of hyperlinks
Switching between the Brushed, Aqua and Unified Title/Toolbar application appearances
Disabling the website icon cache
Importing bookmarks from the Internet Explorer, Mozilla,
Netscape, Omniweb and iCab browsers
Configuring of the history retention settings Safari uses
Changing the search engine used in the Safari toolbar
Choosing whether background imagery is printed
Choosing whether to display complete URLs in Safari tooltips
for links
Changing what browser Safari identifies itself to websites as"
All these things make it easier to use Safari as your main browser. I find this, and Safari Extender: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22562 ($10.00) which allows saving of tabs and various other goodies to be the two most useful adjuncts to Safari.
Let me know if there is anything else I can clarify (or make more difficult to understand ,

  • Browser Usage Not Correct

    Installed NM version 5.1.9005.  Went great and provides excellent networking.
    However, when I look at my daily reports for both my system and my wife's laptop, the reports say under "Program Usage" that the browsers (Firefox) were in use for so many hours, yet under "Web Browser Usage" the reports say " No Web Browser Usage was recorded for this computer yesterday. Either the browser was not used, Network Magic was not running, or an unsupported browser is being used on this computer."
    When I click on "What's This" to see what the headings in the report mean and show.....it says that the two supported browsers are IE and Firefox and that their usage should be shown to inlcude which websites have been visited.
    If I click on "See Report on Web" at the bottom of the email, it shows some weird website (http://bigbulkmail.cn) that I supposedly visited.  My wife's on line report shows no usage.
    I use Embarq DSL with an Embarg provided modem hard wired to my router (WRT54G ver 6 - firmware ver 1.02.5)  (I know it's wireless but prefer it this way)
    Operating system is Windows XP Home (SP3) using windows provided firewall and ESET NOD32 Antivirus software.
    Has anyone else read thier daily usage reports and possibly noticed this inconsistency?
    Anyone got any idea as to why NM would not recognize either system's browser usage?
    Thanks in advance for any help.  NM is a great program and has allowed me to finally network my 2 systems with comfort and ease......let's just say I'm geek-i-ly challanged.  ))))

    Hi All,

    Internet Explorer Browser History
    For Network Magic Premium users, the Internet Explorer Browser History list shows the Internet sites visited by a computer for the previous day. It monitors only those sites accessed by a Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser. At this time, it does not monitor Web sites that are accessed by other Web browsers, such as Firefox or Flock.
    Internet Explorer must be the Default Browser on the Computer you are monitoring.

    Hello Martin,
    Our philospohy with BrowserLab has beento provide a resource that is always available, and quick and easy to use. It is also to provide a relevant selection of browsers, configured to reflect the most common installations.
    We take the removal of older browsers seriously, and are careful to check browser usage statistics. Once we see that the usage of a browser has dropped to an insignificant level, we talk to a representative sample of BrowserLab users to check for sensitivity to removing that browser. We do this to make sure we aren't missing or forgetting about something important that would make us want to leave an older browser in BrowserLab. E.g., IE6 is 10 years old, but it is important to our users, so we have kept it in BrowserLab.
    By removing older browsers, we're telling our users that we think they no longer need to worry about testing them for cross-browser compatibility.
    There may be some unique situations for some of our users where they will need to test in an older browser, but they're the extreme minority. To keep BrowserLab fresh and relevant for our user base, and to keep it affordable to run, we will continue to remove older browsers once they're no longer significant.
    We've announced that BrowserLab will remain complimentary through April 2012. We'll communicate pricing shortly before then.

    As a web designer I am interested in how many ipads have been sold in Australia? And what percentage of the population now have and use them?
    Also same for the iphone - how many units sold and being used?

    Google Analytics, assuming it is available Down Under, can give stats on device and browser usage for a site. Set up take a little while and involves adding script code to your pages, but is well worth the effort.

  • Class action lawsuit regarding Android 2.2

    If there were a class action lawsuit filed against Verizon regarding the lack of support for upgrades of the Android OS, would you join it? Essentially it would be based on promises and claims made by sales reps at the stores during the decision process of buying the phone and by phone reps that the Samsung Fascinate was to receive the Android 2.2 update "any day now".
    As it stands, people who purchased the Fascinate are paying full price for the data package just the same as other Verizon customers who purchased phones from competing manufacturers (Motorola and HTC). However, people who purchased the Fascinate are not getting the same access or experience as the customers who purchased phones from these other manufacturers.
    If I purchased a less technically capable phone than the HTC Incredible or Motorola Droid X, I would not expect the same software updates. However, I was told that the three phones (Incredible, Fascnate and X) were all in the same class and all ran on the same version of Android (2.1 at the time of purchase). Being a Black Berry Storm user before and having been limited on my browser experience, I had been following the progress of Android and I had heard that Android was to receive an update that would allow for Flash capabilities which was a huge deal. It was one of the main reasons I switched from Black Berry to Android. I was told that all three phones would be receiving the 2.2 update "very soon". This was in October of 2010.
    Due to the Adobe Flash capabilities provided by the Android 2.2 update, Fascinate users are being limited on their browser usage but are not being compensated in ANY way for this lack of access. Also, other Samsung products contracted through Verizon are already come with the Android 2.2 software installed.
    Personally (and I don't think I'm alone), I feel cheated by both Verizon and Samsung for not providing what was promised, all the while, people who purchased the Motorola or HTC handsets, have received their updates as promised and are receiving more browser access but paying the same amount that I am. Upon calling Samsung, the rep did not hesitate to blame Verizon for the lack of support.
    So the question again is... If there were a class action lawsuit filed against Verizon, would you join it? There may never be one, and many attorneys may say it would be a waste of time, but would you join? I know I would.

    @mdram4x4
    I am totally disagreeing with you. When you're purchasing a car, dealership is clearly asking telling you that car is sold AS-IS and you even being asked to sign a letter of release form that states that car is being purchased with whatever option currently existing on the car and unless specifically specified no additional accessories or parts are coming with it. BUT and notice it is a capital letter but...it also say NO PROMISES, VERBAL, WRITTEN, OR OTHEWISE BEING MADE TO OFFER IN CONJUNCTION WITH THIS SALE.
    And that it what you are signing.
    In Verizon case, verbal promises of Froyo availability were made by Verizon sales, tech, and sups left and right. It is time to make those companies to be accounted for their actions.
    About 3 weeks or so I spoke with one law firm in San Francisco in regards to that matter and they were willing to open the class action case against Verizon. I was quite busy in the past and hadn't have a chance to speak with them again. I will try to make up some times next week to come see them again and proceed with a case.

  • Error when starting WD-Application without active scripting

    Hello together,
    at the moment I am writing a thesis about web dynpro and time is nearly gone...
    In the article:
    The Basic Facts About Web Dynpro - What Does It Do and How Does It Work?
    by Dr. Peter Tillert,
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/91b8c890-0201-0010-c787-be96f6fade89
    I´ve read about server-side rendering and  client-side rendering ( text under figure 6 ).
    Now I´ve got the following problem:
    Usually I use IE7 for testing my WD-Applications with enabled active scripting.
    Now I thought I disable active scripting on my client in order to test server-side rendering
    of plain html...
    I only get the error: WebDynpro Exception: Client Does Not Support JavaScript
    What´s wrong? I expected an other result... Thought WD is sooo flexible ???
    Many greetings,
    Oliver

    The article that you have chosen is rather old and represented some of the design goals of Web Dynpro back in 2004 before the project was completed.  I see other items in the article (like the Dynpro/Web Dynpro integration for ABAP) that were dropped before the final release of the product as well.
    I believe that quote you focused in on was:
    "While smart browsers (Internet Explorer as of version 5.5 and Netscape Navigator as of version 7.0) can run our client-side JavaScript, future versions of the Web Dynpro runtime will send server-side generated HTML without any scripting to every other browser."
    What you need to understand is that the idea of having a clear separation between the CSF and the SSF was an original design aspect of Web Dynpro that was elimated before the final product was delivered to market.  Part of the reasoning is that mainstream browser usage advanced to the point where the need to support non-JavaScript browsers was largely a moot point by the time Web Dynpro was released.  Therefore producing a rendering engine that has no scripting no longer had much value.  So deactiving scripting support in Web Dynpro today, does result in the error message that you received by design.  You can always check the latest supported browser versions for Web Dynpro by viewing the Platform Availability Matrix on the Service Marketplace.
    Using certain Application and URL parameters there certain features of the client side scritping that can be turned off:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/7b/fb57412df8091de10000000a155106/frameset.htm
    For instance you can deactivate the Delta Rendering (DOM Infusion of UI elements).
    Web Dynpro rendering is still abstracted and very flexible.  Today we focus this multi-client rendering approach on vastly different rendering technologies.  We can output to the HTML with JavaScript and AJAX, to Adobe Flex and to the NetWeaver Business Client (.Net 3.0 runtime). Here are some screenshots that show the same WD application running in these three very different environments.

  • Opening App in own new Window - Opinions please

    Dear Community!
    I would like to invite you to share your opinions on this idea - foremost in terms of user experience, but also technical implementation:
    Like anybody I always have a number of browser-tabs open, but as an apex user (not developer) I probably have only one apex-app running. So my ideea was, to give the user a stronger experience of working with an Application rather than a website, and therefore open the app in a new window.
    Once in a new window all apex functionalities, navigation etc. work as usual. Only the user can concentrate more on the content and is not distracted by all the other browserstuff around. (After all it's not just "some web site"... ) Also he has full independent controll over the window.
    I have build this in a test scenario and invite you to try everything out.
    With a cookie-controlled checkbox the user can determine, wether he wants it in the first place or not. (Then once allow popups for this site.)
    Now it gets weird:
    I want deeplinking to be possible, so the functionality for the opening process in contained in the page template.
    Also I want, when the user accidentally or willingly returns to the initial browser, and the new window comes out of sight, there should be a button to bring that window back to the front.
    For that, javascript has to store the window object on the page, that opened the new one, so it should stay active. But since to user "doesn't want to use" that "old" window in the browser tab, I have created an overlay region, to cover that entire page up - on the condition, that a new window is beeing opened. Just be feeling this is probably a pretty weird solution, but its working so far (see example above).
    Javascript on every page::
    var newwindow;
    $(function(){
      // when app-page is opened the first time, open new window. after that P0OPEN will be empty:
      if ($v('P0OPEN') === 'Y') {
        var href = 'f?p=&APP_ID.:&APP_PAGE_ID.:&APP_SESSION.::::P0OPEN:',
            winw= window.innerWidth, winh = window.innerHeight;
        // cosmetics for positioning etc.
        var options = 'scrollbars=yes, width='+(winw*.8)+', height='+(winh*.8)+', top='+(winh*.1)+', left='+(winw*.1)
        newwindow = window.open(href, '_blank', options);
        // the button to bring the new window back to the front:
        $('#P0BTNFOCUSW').click(function(){
           if (newwindow && !newwindow.closed) {
               setTimeout(function(){ newwindow.focus(); },100) ;
           } else {
               // if window was closed, start new session:
               window.redirect('&LOGOUT_URL.');
    Maybe its better to have an extra page just for that purpose, but how can I combine that with deeplinking AND the necessity to store the javascript-window-object?
    Another problem unsolved is, that when the user logs out in the new window, that should certailnly disapear. Also, in that case: the window open in the initial tab should change too, that is: redirect to the login screen.
    And probably there are a few more things to be considered...
    So I will be very glad to hear all your oppinions and suggestions of any kind.
    Thanks and greetings,
    Tobi
    (omg!! how can you get the formating for code??) (ok, thanks...)

    Well, nothing wrong with trying and experimenting of course! It'd be interesting to have things react a bit more as a desktop app, but there is not really enough power to do so and that is mostly because of security reasons. Just like the popupblocker. Personally I'd rather not have to tell anyone to fiddle with a (any!) popupblocker. I think you can have a good looking 'app' without it though, and design (or, UI) helps a lot in that regard. I don't mean to place Google on a pedestal here, but I like the simplicity of the browser splashscreen for example. "Here are your app links. Want to open one? Cool, right away!". Want multiple? No issue, hold ctrl and click away. That's just plain basic browser usage and it leaves me the option. They could've also placed the target=blank tag in their anchors, but they didn't. And that's fine.
    I wouldn't necessarily make it more complex than that though - like with auto-popup screens after a login, screening of a window from interaction, dealing with deeplinks.
    I've seen some nice "app"-approaches for apex. I think the coolest are where there is a master app, with icons which open up the other applications. The authentication cookie is shared, the authentication scheme is subscription based. You can deeplink apps but if you don't have a deeplink you go to the splashscreen.
    If you deeplinked then you meant to go there, and not first the splash which pops up something else. If you want to go there then there is a button in each app which will open up the splash app (and if you add target blank in there, in a new window).
    I'd say there is a lot of room for innovation, and anything web is possible. But be careful with those things like popupblockers
    And It's just one opinion of course. I'm sure there are wildly differing ones out there. (Who don't react) You could always try some more UX-UI oriented forums for some feedback in this regard!

  • Spry error in older version?

    I get an error when I run in 6 and under using the "out of
    the box" spry
    accordion.
    the error line is line 334 from the .js file
    ******is the line with the error
    // XXX: IE doesn't allow the setting of tabindex dynamically.
    This means
    we can't
    //rely on adding the tabindex attribute if it is missing to
    enable
    keyboard navigation
    // by default.
    *******//var tabIndexAttr =
    this.element.attributes.getNamedItem("tabindex");
    if (!tabIndexAttr) this.element.tabindex = 0;
    if (tabIndexAttr)
    Anyone know what the solution is?

    David, thanks for the response. I just looked up browser
    usage on my
    site and it sits at around 41 people out of roughly 6,000
    that visit my
    site in a month. Are people, for the most part, not designing
    for these
    older versions? Perhaps I am behind the times on this?
    Any ideas what the best strategy would be to make it so that
    if they
    don't have ver 6 or above, they would get an alternative
    menu?

  • 2009 iMac freezing, here's etrecheck's summary?

    Hi, I would love advice on how to resolve this problem: My 2009 iMac freezes after 30-45 minutes of internet browser usage. (Regardless of browser type)
    It will usually start with a full freeze, and then after 5 minutes the mouse cursor will move but clicking anywhere won't work and one can't tab out of the browser. A reboot is always needed, and we're doing it about 10 times a day! Thanks for any advice. Here's what etrecheck says, since I read that its best to post that!

    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
    For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
    In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
    Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
    If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
    When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
    Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
              DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
    (not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
    I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
    If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
    In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
    Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
    When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Tables too high in safari 3  UPDATE -SOLVED

    after I made all the adjustments, everything seems to be
    working OK in both IE and Safari 3. Except the tables. They are
    always too high.. What can I do, please?
    karl,London
    Update:
    I got a message that it also was too high in Mozilla. I
    experimented and came up with such a simple solution, that I am
    absolutely astonished that neither of your guys, even the 'experts'
    and 'seniors'. who were so fast off the mark to voice their
    critique and telll how crappy it all was..
    The SIMPLE solution:
    the original line I had, for example:
    <td bgcolor="#FFFFFF"><p class="normal_text">Any
    text</p></td>
    SHOULD BE:
    <td bgcolor="#FFFFFF" class="normal_text">Any
    text</td>
    simple, but NONE of your quys, even those who had a look,
    could see such a simple error or mine..:-))
    Moral of the story: Look and think before your bark...
    because you will sure look a proper idiot...
    :-) end of problem... rip...

    Hey I was following - hope you don't mind a suggestion.
    How about a CC such as.....
    <!--[if lte IE 6]><style>#main_content{width:
    720px; overflow:
    auto;}</style><![endif]-->
    I know it gives a hor scrollbar but I think it looks better
    that way or
    at least visually it is more like the rest of the browsers on
    XPPro at
    least!

  • Internet Explorer 9 Beta - Anyone using it? Thoughts?

    Internet Explorer 9 Beta is very chrome-like visually.  The interface has transformed towards the minimalist approach first seen in Google Chrome. It definitely looks pretty and feels faster than ever before.  I just hope Microsoft plans to update it regularly once it launches officially in order to keep up with the fast pace of evolution that Firefox and Chrome have demonstrated while steadily dwindling away at Microsoft's once dominant browser usage.
    I recommend giving IE9 beta a try, it's not just the browser you use to down the browser you want to use anymore, maybe

    I use it at home, and I am completely impressed. The hardware accelleration was a bonus, as I hoped it improved flash performance for my wife in facebook games; farmville, etc. So far it works, but there are occasional reloads, etc, that need to be done not common with Firefox or Chrome. Overall interface is almost precisely like Chrome - it seems a mirror copy with only a branding and icon set change. There are a few additional features but none I'd ever use. As this is a beta version, I'm insure stability will improve over time.
    At this point I'd say IE has *caught up* with the likes of Chrome, etc, which might excite Chrome into implementing a few extra changes itself. I would not say that IE has broken any new ground, but it has been 'put back' in my list of browsers I swap through, for reasons of best performance per application.

  • BrowserLab 1.6.4 now live

    For details, see our BrowserLab Team Blog post: http://blogs.adobe.com/browserlab/2011/10/07/browserlab-1-6-4-with-new-chrome-and-firefox- browsers-is-now-live/
    Enjoy!
    Bruce

    My Firefox hangs a lot when I open heavy graphic website. sometime it happens with the normal website with minimal graphic as well. I am using 20.0.1. I am planning to upgrade it to latest version but my belief is that the latest version won't work well in XP.

    mozbar

    I would agree that my browser usage is bit different than average user. Hence can you please suggest which older version should I use. or is there any way I can optimize firefox for optimum performance?
    FYR.. my system RAM is only 1 GB.

    Is there any way to keep those addons and make my firefox lighter by optimizing it?
