Browsing is very slow on Mac Mini connected to 100mbit LAN. FTP and file download is very fast.

Hi all
I have a strange behaviour of my Mac MIni 2012. The mini is connected to the internet by LAN. When I download a file via http or ftp everything is very fast (arround 95mbit/s). But when I try to open a website in Safari, Chrome or Firefox i have to wait some seconds until the page starts rendering.after the page is rendered completely, everything works fast and smooth.
Do you have any ideas where the problem migth be? I have reinstalled Mavericks from zero yesterday. The problem resists. With my Macbook Air (conntected to the same router) and my Windows computer I dont have this problem.
THanks in advance for your help.
Greets
Marc

By any chance, do you run sophos?  I had the same issue as you and fixed it on my mac mini and macbook pro by doing the following:
Sophos --> Open Preferences --> Web Protection --> General
You will need to enter your admin password after clicking the padlock in the bottom left to allow you to change settings.
From there, deactivate "Block access to malicious websites using realtime URL reputation checks".  For good measure, I also deactivated "Block malicious downloads from websites".
Hope this helps!

  • Very slow running Mac Mini

    Hi,
I'd like to thank all people supporting us (users) in these discussions, and especially the person who helped me restoring my MBP's performance,
I'm requesting once again some help for my Mac Mini which is very very slow.
Mac Mini running OS X Moutain Lion + Apple's Server add-on (a few services are running : file sharing mainly).
    Thanks in advance,

Hello Hedi, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • ACR 7.1 - very slow on Mac mini

    Hi
I'm running the trial version of CS6 on a new Mac mini.
I like the features in ACR 7.1 but I'm finding it very slow.
Dragging the Temperature slider takes about 5 seconds before the image updates. Is this normal?
This is with just one Nikon D700 Nef open in ACR, and no other apps running. I've already worked the file up, making adjustments to lens correction, sharpening, noise reduction, and using a couple of adjustment brushes.
If I progressively switch these settings off, the Temperature slider gradually goes back to being reasonably responsive. But I'd like to be able to fine tune the colour after doing these other adjustments.
Any way I can speed it up?
    Thanks!
    Mac mini 2.7 i7, AMD 6630, 16Gb RAM, 7200rpm 750Gb HD.
    Eizo CG275W
    Photoshop CS6
    ACR 7.1.0.354
    Mountain Lion 10.8.1

My dedicated CS6/ACR 7.x system is substantially more underpowered than your Mac Mini, yet I see no such lag in ACR.  Dragging the Temperature adjustment slider is practically real-time, with the preview refreshing in a fraction of a second that I can barely see and have no way of measuring.
I'm now running ACR 7.2RC1, but I don't remember seeing a lag in ACR 7.1 either.
My main working machine is a Power Mac (PPC) G5 Quad with 16 GB of RAM, on which 11.0.2 is the last version of Photoshop to run, so I have the Mac-Intel system described below just to run ACR 7.x under Photoshop 13.0.1.  I convert my raw files in ACR7.x open them in Ps 13.0.x and save them via Ethernet to an external HD connected to the G5 Quad for further processing in CS4. The Mac-Intel is used for no other purpose and the only other application I occasionally run on said Mac-Intel is TextEdit.
2007, 2GHz MacBook 2,1, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of RAM (can use 3 GB), 160 GB internal boot disk, dedicated FireWire400 external HD for Ps scratch disk, external Time Machine HD.  Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I literally rescued this MacBook from the trash, where it had landed when my wife was told by local Apple Macgenius staff that it was beyond repair, when in reality all that was wrong with it was a bulging battery exerting upward pressure on the track pad and keyboard.  That was easy to replace for $20 or so through Amazon.com.
So, from where I sit,  either you have a machine-specific problem somewhere, or the culprit in your issue is Mountain Poop.

  • Airport very slow with Mac mini

I have a Powerbook and a Mac Mini. Both have airport wireless internet.
When I put them side-by-side, the Powerbook gets a strong internet connection, the Mac mini is very weak and often loses the internet altogether.
Both the Powerbook and Mini have 1 GB Ram.
Seems like they should get identical or at least very similar reception.
    Help!

Yes, I would expect them to have roughly similar reception.
The Mac mini is certainly still under warranty. The Airport card inside your Mac mini is not considered to be a user-serviceable part. Therefore best solution - take your Mac mini to your Apple dealer, explain the problem, and get them to fix it.

  • Wifi LAN VERY slow on mac mini 10.6.8

    All,
I have a mac mini 1.66 intel core Duo with 2gb of RAM.  The HD crashed a couple months ago and so it has a clean version of 10.6.8 on it.
In my house I have a Motorola modem (comcast) hooked to a vonage box with wifi.  Off this we run 2 MBP's a wifi printer, and the Mini.
Both MBP's will get 10mb down and 3-5mb up on speedtest.net.
The Mini will get .9 down and .7 or so up.  It also became non-responsive using VNC to control it, so it's not so much that the internet is slow, but more that it just isn't connecting to the LAN with any speed.  It is connected to my router (no security)  with a signal/noise of -75/-98 and a transmit rate of 48.
I had shared my Dish Network box out via ethernet (airport sharing to ethernet) and had done the terminal prompt fix which is found all over the net to allow DHCP on internet sharing.  However, it doesn't matter if I turn off internet sharing, the local speeds are still just terribly slow.
This is a big problem since it's used as our media center for streaming netflix, etc...
    Any help?  Where to start?
    Thanks,

If reinstalling doesn't help, you'll probably need to contact Macroplant support:

  • Hi folks, I have my new mac mini connected to my telly (HDMI) and want to set it up. It didn't start the set up assistant

Hi folks, I've got a new mac mini and want to start using it. I put it on my HDMI telly and connected it to magic trackpad and wireless keybord, both are working fine. I can see the mac dashboard but I cannot click anything! The pointer moves where I want it to but nothing reacts and the setup assistant didn't start either.
Any idea what I can do?

  • How can I control a mac mini connected to a benchmark dac 2 for the purpose of listening to 24/192 audio files?

How can I control a mac mini connected by USB to a Benchmark DAC 2 for the purpose of listening to 24/192 music downloads?

    Hello,
About the dac 1, but may apply to the dac 2 as well in some ways...
    Here are more details:
    1) The current version of iTunes (7.5) for OSX is very broken. Some older versions work properly, but 7.5 introduces truncation and DSP artifacts that can measure as high as –80dBFS. These levels are easily audible. There is no system configuration that will permit transparent playback from 44.1kHz sources with iTunes 7.5. Curiously, the only format that works properly in 7.5 is 24-bit/96kHz. This iTunes problem has nothing to do with USB communications, as the results are the same when using the built-in optical port on our PowerBooks. As a workaround, we suggest using the free VLC for Mac player. VLC works perfectly with all formats (provided OSX is set to match the sample rate of the files being played). We highly recommend the VLC player for OSX users, and strongly advise against using iTunes. We will attempt to identify which versions of iTunes work and which ones don't. But beware, iTunes updates itself without user intervention. One of our test computers "upgraded" itself to the dysfunctional iTunes 7.5.
    2) OSX still does not have the ability to follow sample-rate changes. We consider this a nuisance for most users and a show-stopper for users who want to play a mixed list of 44.1kHz and 96kHz material. An OSX sample-rate mismatch will invoke the very-poor-quality sample-rate conversion that is built into OSX. The iTunes 7.5 bug seems to be locking on this sample-rate conversion at all sample rates other than 96kHz. Until this is fixed, OSX is not the operating system of choice for audio playback.

  • How to mirror iMac screen wirelessly through a mac mini connected to an hdmi port of HD TV?

I have a new Mac Mini connected to a Sony HD TV. On the same network but in a different room I have my iMac. I can control the iMac with wireless mouse and keyboard from the same room where the TV and Mac Mini reside. I would like to work on my iMac but use the HD TV as my monitor so I can show slideshows and iMovie projects without transferring files to the MacMini first. Is it possible, and if so, how do I go about setting it up?

Your iMac likely supports a higher resolution than the TV does. The maximum standard TVs today use is 1920x1080, and if your iMac is an Intel Core i3 or i5, its own display is at least that high of a resolution. Which model of iMac do you have?
If your iMac is running at least Leopard (10.5), then both machines have Screen Sharing built in. It can be accessed from the Finder, but as often as you would like to use it you should go to Macintosh HD > System > Library > CoreServices and drag it (the icon) to your Dock. That will create the shortcut to get to it easily. As I noted before, the built in Screen Sharing VNC software doesn't do full screen, but third party VNC software can. Both machines do not need to be using the thrid party VNC software, just the one viewing - in this case your Mac mini. Chicken of the VNC is a popular free one, fairly easy to use:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
For more info about how to set up Screen Sharing and how to use the included application:
    http://mac.appstorm.net/how-to/os-x/using-screen-sharing-in-os-x-leopard/
Note that you will have to use the settings in System Preferences, regardless of what VNC software you use. Both systems will need to have Screen Sharing settings enabled.

I would like to use my iMac 7,1 as a monitor for my Mac mini 2012. Is that possible and if yes, what type of cable connection do I need? Thank you.

No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

  • Does a Mac Mini connect to a G5

I have been working with the iPad, and I have a G5 Mac ..does a Mac mini connect to a G5

    Which iPad/iOS on the iPad?
What OSX version on the G5?
An iPad 1 (only goes to iOS 5.1.1) will sync to a fully updated G5. That means OSX 10.5.8.
A later model, fully updated iPad will not sync since they require iTunes 11.1 and that requires OSX 10.6.8 or later which requires a Mac with an Intel processor.

  • PP CS4 very slow on MAC

I have noticed that when running a 1 hr sequence (wedding), my ability to use the CTRL D short cut for the default transition is VERY slow.  I get the spinning wheel of death and then the transition appears.  The time line runs fine but anything I do appears as if it is stressing the system out and it cannot perform.  I have 16 gigs of memory on a MAC Pro.  Any thoughts?

You will have to forgive me, as my Mac-speak is horribly limited, but:
1.) what is your I/O sub-system set up, i.e. HDD's size, speed controller and how allocated? This is often the most important link in NLE work.
2.) what is you CPU speed? This is also important in NLE work. RAM is great, but not the end-all in performance.
In general, I've seen very few posts about CS4 being slow on a Mac. I'd offer a wild guess that it's your System's setup, or too many other programs running that saps the resources that any NLE will need.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Why is Excel so slow on Mac Mini?

At home I have a Mac Mini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo with 2GB RAM and 80GB hard drive, OS 10.4.10 and Excel 2004. At work I have an IBM Thinkpad 1.6GHz Intel Pentium Pro with 1.2GB RAM and 40GB hard drive, Windows XP and Excel 2003. I have an excel spreadsheet that takes 3 minutes to recalculate on the IBM Thinkpad. But on the Mac Mini it takes over 7 minutes and some times stops recalculating.
Why is there such a huge difference in performance? What could be making the performance on my Mac Mini so slow?

I've had Macs at home and PC's at work for many years. But this is the widest performance gap on spreadsheets that I've ever experienced. My old G4 was close to my old desktop PC at work when processing the same spreadsheet. Is there anything else that may be going on? Or anything to improve performance? One thing I've noticed is when I select the excel icon and get info, nowhere do I find this open with rosetta option that I've seen talked about. The app clearly says it's a PowerPC app, so shouldn't that option show up under get info, or did that go away under 10.4.10?

  • Airplay over mac mini connection?

I have an Apple TV, 3rd gen and a mac mini running OS 10.6 and a MBA running OS 10.9 and an iPad Mini running IOS7.1
I have been successfully streaming my MBA and iPad Mini through my Verizon FiOS to Apple TV.
I am headed to a remote RV park and wanted to stream my downloaded (offline) app programming to my Apple TV from my iPad Mini (not in my Macs' iTunes Libraries). I set up a WIFI network on my Mac computers and all the devices can find it except for the Apple TV. It can only connect via the ethernet cable from the MBA and mirror the MBA screen. Even though the iPad can connect to the Mac computer's (shared network, shared, WIFI or shared Bluetooth) it does not give me any option to select the Apple TV screen. The normal icon for the Apple TV display option is not there- only an Air Play option.
I have read articles online until my head spins about using a Mac Mini for a home LAN of sorts to allow streaming to Apple TV. Is there anyway to get the iPad mini to recognize the mac computer's created WIFI network so that it will stream to the Apple TV? Or does it only work with a paid provider type of WIFI?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Rudegar.
For others looking for an answer to this or a similar question:
To recap the question is: Is there anyway to get the iPad mini to recognize a mac computer's created WIFI network so that it will stream to the Apple TV?
And the simple answer is: No.
    1. The support.apple.com link in the above reply goes to a geeky table of endless port numbers and their configs.
    2. Creating and sharing your Mac computer's WIFI/Ethernet/Bluetooth connection will not work to stream iPad and iPod devices to Apple TV unless perhaps you have an in depth understanding of port configs (its not something a basic user is likely to readily figure out).
I tested out this alternative for streaming from devices to Apple TV when OFF THE GRID. I used an old router that was capable of generating a Network WIFI signal. It was NOT connected to the Internet- only the power outlet. Here are the steps that worked for me:
    1. power up the router
    2. connect the devices (Apple TV, iTouch, iPad, etc) to the router's broadcasted signal (SSID)
Using this method, my devices all showed the Air Play icon and allowed me to stream device content to Apple TV.
    NOTES:
    1. On APPLE TV- The Test Network program will not work (cannot be tested) without a live INTERNET connection
    2. Nothing of course can be downloaded- only streamed (whatever is already downloaded on the iPad)
    3. If you want to stream from your computer's iTunes Library then you must FIRST USE an Internet connection to set up the Apple TV--->Computer Settings with your computer. You NEED TO BE ONLINE when doing this so the Apple iTunes Store (or whatever it is called) can validate your iTunes User ID with both devices (Apple TV and computer). After this initial validation, I went off grid (no internet) and the Apple TV was still able to recognize and stream media (music, movies, purchased & downloaded content) from my computer/iTunes library and my photos.
