Browsing Large Music Collection

I'm thinking of buying an Apple Tv, but my main concern is if it's tremendously slow to scroll through hundreds of artists?
I currently stream through my PS3 and it's very fast to scroll down the artist list, where as my friend's Roku Box takes forever and a day.  Couldn't find any YouTube video's demostrating this, so I hope some one can enlighten me.
Thanks in advance:)

Answered my own question by just buying it and I'm happy that I did!  It's great:)

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

I have just updated my phone in icloud and I have lost all my data including my large music collection from itunes. How can I recover my music and phone list?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can re-download content purchased from the iTunes store (availability varies depending on location) using the purchased option which is revealed in the iTunes app on your iOS device by tapping the more button at the bottom of the screen.

  • Speed up large music collection

I have failrly large music collection on an external disk that I would like to plug into an new airport extreme as an airdisk. Are there any steps I can take to help with speed issue of the airdisk when it comes to adding files to the iTunes?
I seem to remember that there was an option for not showing icons that sped things up a fair amount.

Home sharing works only on the same local network as your computer.
iTunes Match will actually download the songs but also works while not on the same local network as your computer (when you are out and about).
Generally, load onto the iPad what you normally listen to. Use iTunes Match to download if there are items you later decide you want when not at home.

  • Do large music collections slow your computer down?

    Hello...
Hey I've just got a new MacBook Pro, the 15" model, and I am about to transfer all my music from my old Mac to this one.
My music collection is currently around 50GB, if i put ALL this music onto my new computer will it affect the running speed while im working in Photoshop and InDesign etc?
Would it be best to buy and external hard-drive and run all my music off that? Or will it make no difference.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks.
Sorry if this question is silly, just dont want a massive music folder to bug down the speed.

not if there is enough space left on your startup disk. see this
Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space:
    1. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
    2. Some say that your hard drive should have at least 5% of it's capacity available for use. Still others say 10% to 15%. If you routinely process complex graphics and videos, even more space is required.
Would it be best to buy and external hard-drive and run all my music off that?
personally, i prefer that option. my 1.4 TB library lives on a 2 TB firewire 800 drive hanging off my mini. i couldn't be happier with speed and performance.

  • Large music collection questions...

    Hello All,
I am new to iTunes and I have a couple of questions I need answers to before I make a big mess.
I am moving from all windows to all mac environment. My music collection (77,000 songs) exists on several external HDD and are configured for the win 7 machine. The only organization for the collection is my own folder system, it has not been scanned or compiled into a whole by any program, win or mac.
I also have a Mini hard wired to a 2TB TC. I want to get the music into iTunes and I am looking for some direction.
First, I want to clean up the collection and get it all on 1 drive before I move it to iTunes. Or do I?  This is my first issue, dont know what to do first. Do I work with the collection in Win first and then move a clean collection into itunes or move it to iTunes first?
I have read about the tuneup program and it seems like it either works great or not. Any opinions here? Of course I am smart enough not to just dump the whole collection on it and expect it to be fluffed and folded in an hour. It is available for Win as well as being an iTunes plug-in... is it better one way or another.
If the opinion is that tuneup is not the best program then what are the better alternatives?
Second question involves final resting place of clean collection. I want to keep the clean collection on an external HDD. Do I want it to be plugged into the mini or the TC for it to be shared accross all devices?
If there is something I am overlooking please chime in, as I said, new to iTunes and Mac and there is a lot to learn.
Thank you for your time in this matter.
    Cheers,

  • Z3 compact freezes and reboots constantly with large music collection on sd card.

    Hi
On adding my music collection(72GB) to the sd card via the usb cable, I've run into a pretty serious issue/bug with my z3 compact. This renders the phone useless.   All is well as long as I never reboot/shutdown the phone after adding music. I've successfully used the walkman app for a number of days with the full music colletion present.  Once the phone is shutdown,  on restart it gets hot, battery starts to drain significantly( +- 10% in about 4min) and it then freezes and reboots constantly. I've tried a number of things to attempt to recover.
removing the sd card, leaving it out and restarting the phone
removing the music files from the sd card
factory reset but keeping the music files on the sd card
I've used mp3diags to scan my collection for broken files, there were some minor issues with id3 tags which I've corrected but no broken files.
None of these actions improved matters, the only solution seems to be to erase data from the sd card and factory reset the phone. Then add the files again. This is quite time consuming and very very frustrating.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Have a look at this post....sounds very much like what you are experiencing dont you think

  • I have a large music collection in My Music which is where my Itunes music is.  I use Itunes match now and possibly it is what is causing my problems but can't be sure.  I keep getting a new My Music folder when I go into itunes so I have 2. what can I do

Hi.  I have a very large my music folder on my C drive.  This is were all of my music is including itunes.  However, when I go into itunes, it sets up a new my music folder. If I erase the new folder, it comes back the next time I go into itunes.  It is just a very small folder vs. the large 132 GB file named My Music.  What is this new one and why does it keep getting generated vs. Itunes just using the large My Music folder that has all my music.  The small My Music it creates is 134 MB.  Does this have something to do with using Icloud and Itunes Match?  I find it confusing to have two my music folders.

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor.  The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow.  It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them.  You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version).  Personal preferences showing here.

  • Can I use the icloud to play all of my music to any of my devices (ipod and several iphones) even when I don't have an internet connection of any kind?  I have a large music collection and it is too big for my PC to store it all.  Thanks

    Hi,
I have used itunes for years and recently found as my collection grew, so the space on my PC shrunk.  I tried keeping it all on a hard drive but it seemed like itunes wanted to keep reverting to the PC drive and I would lose all the CDs I had spent ages putting on.  This has happened to me at least 3 times so I am getting really frustrated with it now.
I am looking for a simpler option.  icloud seems like a great idea as long as I can get access to my music whether or not I have internet - which is sometimes patchy where I live.  Also, I would need the cloud to be able to share different music across different devices such as an ipod and other iphones.
Can anyone guide me on this?
    Thanks

  • How to store very large music collection

I have nearly 10,000 albums that i would like to rip and get rid of. right now i have 60,000 songs ripped, and i'm running several la cie 800-400 hard drives through a hub. that works pretty well, but i can see i'm on the road to too many hard drives if i'm really going to do this (plus i have to back up the entire collection).
does anyone have any good ideas as to what i should do? i'm at a loss, other than keep on buy more hard drives. but i don't think that's going to work. please advise if you can.

I dont really think there is a good solution yet. Gtkpod is clumsy and slow with big libraries (10000+ songs) and gnupod had its own set of issues. It started grouping artists that started with "The" under "T" as opposed to the iTunes/Gtkpod way of ignoring "The" and place it with whatever letter followed. I found that far too annoying.

  • Is there anyone out there who has used iTunes Match for a large music collection who actually likes and recommends it?

I have over 16,000 custom selected songs in my library. It's the most important thing on my computer by far. Before I purchase Match, I would like to know if other users really like it.
When you purchase Match and all your tunes have been matched or uploaded, what do you do with your current iTunes library?
It's my understanding that you can stream tunes through your Mac computers but that you have to download them to an iPad, iPod or iPhone if you play the tunes through them, right?
When iTunes Match matches the tunes, does it put them where you had them prior to the match. I.e., will your library look the same as when you started?

When you purchase Match and all your tunes have been matched or uploaded, what do you do with your current iTunes library?
You need do nothing with it. You can keep it on your hard drive to access locally.

    Yes, that's correct.
When iTunes Match matches the tunes, does it put them where you had them prior to the match. I.e., will your library look the same as when you started?
It presents the library as it was originally on my hard drive, but then I don't have my library's organization customized.

  • Best way to import large CD collection to external NAS drive using iTunes

I am planning to re-import a large CD collection to an external NAS drive with iTunes. Previously I imported using a WAV encoder, but now realize that none of the music was tagged and attempts using a tag from file name script proved unsuccessful.
Can anyone advise me on the best method and codic to do this with iTunes? I was planning to use either AAC or MP3 set at 256 or 320kbps. Both of these encoders, I am being told, will hold the ID3 tag. Any other recommendations on this process is welcomed.
Also, once I have the music imported to the network drive, how do I get the itune library to be recognized on another computer on the network (not the computer that was used to import)?

All of the iTunes compatible formats will accept tags, except for WAV. Most people nowadays use either AAC or MP3 at 256 kb/s. But if your ears and your audio setup require the extra fidelity of a lossless format, go with Apple Lossless or AIFF.
Before you start ripping, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and set the iTunes Media folder location to the NAS. Then any files that you rip from CD will go straight to the NAS.
Also, once I have the music imported to the network drive, how do I get the itune library to be recognized on another computer on the network (not the computer that was used to import)?
iTunes does not have any folder watching capability. Once the files are on the NAS, you can manually go to another computer's iTunes to add them (File > Add Folder to library) or you can get 3rd party folder watching software such as iTunes Folder Watch.
